How to weather the end of humanity?

Hiro Protagonist · 2022-04-17 03:50
To me, more and more data is indicating that modern industrial society has triggered an exponential methane feedback loop that will quickly render most of the world uninhabitable. REGARDLESS if you agree or not, let’s say for the sake of argument that it is correct. What am I supposed to do with this information? How can I plan to thrive in what may be the end of modern civilization, if not humanity as a species? What kind of skills can I learn to live as safe and happy as possible? What places on earth would be the safest to live? Even if the worst case scenario doesn’t happen, being prepared can still help us withstand the hard times ahead of us.
Otto Normalverbraucher · 2022-04-17 03:58
>What am I supposed to do with this information? Do what you're doing now, worry without reason. >How can I plan to thrive in what may be the end of modern civilization, if not humanity as a species? You can't, considering how many people will be around to fight for resources. Do what I do, and commission My Little Pornography and don't worry about the collapse of society, instead.

>>58188 I made a thread about this but the CLAMPED mods deleted it just like they vaccinated Lainchan against the word CLAMPED. Check out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8BxcL2kjl4 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rf78rEAJvhY What manner of longterm organization will allow you to "weather" this? Impossible to say. There are so many branches it can go down. Right now you want food and weapons. Ultimately if the grid goes down and a bu ch of people are dead, eventually the nuclear reactors will melt down. They're also built at sea level, which is rising. The controllers could try to set off a bunch of nukes and earthquakes to try to put enough dust in the air to block out the sun. They're using ground based RF installations to try to degrade the methane. Ultiamtely they're going to need to kill a lot of people and take whatever is left and cram them into high density smart cities where they have absolute control. They might run off to their underground cities if it gets bad enough, in which case the rest of us should survive for the sole purpose of exterminating them and their offspring when and if they ever emerge. They probably want to go to space, but unless they have tech we don't know about (probable) they won't be able to pull that off in time. Worst case scenario we get Venus Syndrome. Best case scenario... flat earth, large earth, or hollow Earth is correct, this is a controlled environment, and the God(s) will step in and reseed the planet after we've destroyed ourselves.

The obvious one is grow your own food and learn how to survive in the wilderniss. If you live in the city you need to gtfo. Anything diy skillwise is useful and also bonus points if you can get people from your community involved. My advice is find a place far away well concealed and set up shop there, grow as much stuff as you can with whatever means are available.

>>58194 >My advice is find a place far away well concealed and set up shop there, grow as much stuff as you can with whatever means are available. OP's hypothetical scenario is an event that renders most of the world 'uninhabitable'. In such a scenario, your cute little innawoods subsistence farm will no longer be able to survive, and indeed likely will be no longer innawoods as such, and quite possibly will be burned down by the massive upcomming fires that will destroy all the dead trees, and you and your goats will all suffocate in the firestorm unlike any seen since tokyo. Or something like that. More likely the ideal is to move to a place that might be marginally inhabitable now, and position yourself to be able to sieze land and start a subsistence farm in that area pending this specific disaster, while stockpiling enough goods to keep yourself and your protofarm alive during a few years of possible chaos and uncertainty, and doing what local geoengineering projects you can to prepare the area. This will probably mean keeping some livestock around with you and your family during these years, among other things, and in general a lot of prepper advice might be sound. Of course, I'm not sure this specific disaster is likely, but I'll accept the hypothetical scenario that its certain.

You can´t do anything. If society colapses you are doomed, but society won´t colapse so you are safe.
Aristóteles Amadópulus · 2022-04-24 16:29
Of the popular worldviews, Buddhism and related religions are probably the only way to cope with the fact that our doom is sealed and we are powerless to stop it. Discordianism also works in a pinch. One of the most important things you can do from the POV of survival is learn a little bit of electronics. Most of the world will be urban wasteland. >end of humanity not happening. I am fully willing to accept that the human population will decrease by over 90% this century , but that does not mean either the end of civilization or the end of humanity.
Agent Smith · 2022-04-24 23:45
>>58330 The whole society collapse is such a silly meme. I blame old people media (Mad Max movies, fallout games etc) and American pop-culture. Black death killed up to 60% of the population in some places and even then the society and the civilization did not collapse. Like, I get it, you fantasize about murdering people in a post-apocalyptic wasteland but please, get real.

>>58190 >Worst case scenario we get Venus Syndrome Its not possible for our atmosphere to become like Venus except with heavy meteor impacts. There isn't enough atmospheric carbon and a warming planet makes geological processes better at sequestering atmospheric carbon, not worse. Worst case scenario is if we somehow manage to warm the surface enough to boil away the oceans(certainly atmospheric pollutants are not capable of this) and we get a "hothouse earth" but that's also pretty far fetched. >>58361 >its an active foe, not a passive one "active" in the sense that they try to do things, sure. >>58365 The problem with busy people at the top is they are very busy. So the scope of knowledge is limited due lack of time for further education. They are smart but lack of information due lack of time can lead to wrong decisions. So dont think you can blindly trust leadership to choose the best route. They know this too of course which is why any leader has advisors but that merely shifts the problem to the general issue of hiring competent people. Historical failure is school material. Spike Spiegel · 2022-04-27 00:08
>>58368 >Which one's aren't? Way to not answer the question. Let's make it simple: can you provide any plausible mechanism for enough greenhouse gasses to enter the atmosphere to cause a runaway greenhouse effect? The lowest tipping point temperature I've ever heard of was +50C, which is when the oceans start to boil away. Even then you would need some as-yet-unknown mechanism for gasses sequestered within the mantle nd crust to escape, otherwise the "hothouse earth" will rpobably be stable and earths atmosphere could never become venus-like because there simply isnt enough atmosphere. How do you propose the earth would be warmed that much? Theorizing a runaway greenhouse effect and the extermination of all life is counterproductive. We already know that the results of climate change are going to be disastrous, they're already disastrous right now. People tend to ignore warnings of danger when they perceive it is being exaggerated, that's how oil companies managed to squash this stuff for so many decades. Don't fall into their trap.

>>58401 The biosphere terraformed earth and is its organs and life support systems. For all realistic purposes, the phytoplankton in the ocean are as much your organ as your own heart or lungs. Geoengineering, stratospheric aerosol injection, weather warfare, climate engineering, chemtrails, whatever you want to call them are an attack not just on weather, but the underlying support system of the biosphere. That is, plankton, soil microbes, trees (particularly their root systems), and other factors which are downstream of disrupting the hydrological cycle. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clathrate_gun_hypothesis Not particularly likely this time around, but is one possible branch for methane release in general. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canfield_ocean If enough humans are killed off and rendered disorganized, the reactors will all melt down. Conveniently they're mostly built at sea level. >People tend to ignore warnings of danger when they perceive it is being exaggerated, that's how oil companies managed to squash this stuff for so many decades. Don't fall into their trap. No, people tend to ignore any warning that is either inconvenient or they view it as someone else's job to take care of it. I think of everything in terms of "psyops" and behavioral control, this is not a new consideration. Oh plant these threads in their hearts and minds and tug them this way and that, oh prime them like this and then frame it like that, and don't say it this way, say it that way, and oh no they're trying to egt you to react and say it like this instead of going over here and saying that and that means that this'll do this and never get off the ground because you're saying this and that from this angle and not that angle and oh no no no NO NO they're just tricking you into being alarmist so everyone will ifgnore you!!!!!!!!! Enough. What a load of horseshit. You want to know the real truth? You can try to play 10D chess, you can try to play World Parent, you can try to be their Messiah, you can try to play God, you can come to them as a leader, you can come to them in rags amongst the meek. You can say it this way, you can present it that way, you can drip feed it, you can try make em see just this part of it so they'll do what you want. You can tip toe quietly out of sight, you can be grandiose and stomp around. You can plot it out, here's where we probably are, here are all the different branches it can go down, here are the players, here's what they're probably doing and why, here's how they'll react. Blah blah blah blah, fuarrrking, blah. At the end of the day it doesn't make a fuarrrking bit of difference what you say or do. Want something done right? Do it yourself. Lead by example. People are dumb Hylics, they're cattle, they're like animals. They don't think abstract or listen to soykaf. Unless you come to them appealing to either matters of immediate convenience, with threat, or with temptation, nothing shall spur them. They are empty vessels that do whatever those around them are doing. Don't talk to them, don't waste your breath. Appeal to others who are not braindead, lead by example, and so contrive a space where they are either baited or naturally forced into doing what they need to be doing. The "elite" use this method for a reason. Anyone trying to "wake the masses" is a fool.

>>58404 >https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clathrate_gun_hypothesis >Not particularly likely this time around, but is one possible branch for methane release in general. >https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canfield_ocean Finally some straight answers. Luckily, as the first Wikipedia page points out, there isn't any hard evidence that methane release on that scale happened in the past. Even if it did, there certainly isn't any hard evidence that there is enough methane to cause a runaway greenhouse effect. Enough to kill most forms of multicellular life, possibly -- but that is much less than the amount required for "Venus syndrome".
