How to deal with everyone giving up?
Molly Millions · 2022-02-26 18:50
I really enjoy browsing spaces like lainchan or other obscure imageboards/websites/communities, especially those that are critical of the current direction of the world/our culture.
However what is increasingly bothering me is just how depressed everyone is, how eager everyone is to give up and how much they encourage others to do the same. I understand why they think/feel this way completely however unlike them I do not want to sit here depressed as soykaf until I eventually die of whatever numerous causes that are on the horizon, endlessly thinking about the same thing day in and day out, doing nothing with my life & slowly running out of time.
I imagine I'm not the only one here who feels this way. Have you lainons had a similar experience, and if yes, how are you dealing with it? I really don't want to stop browsing places like this and return to normal person media but at the same time the more time I spend in places like here the more I want to lie in bed and do nothing rather than actually chasing my dreams.

theres nothing worth doing on this world. its not even nihilism in the sense of 'hurr nothing matters so im gonna do nothing. its just that nothing brings any joy and i an unable to interact with the world or create anything. no teenage platitude can make me feel better. i have done absolutely everything a human can be expected to do to improve their life and it did nothing for me. so why should i give a soykaf or even pretend to believe in anything else.

I understand what you mean. I noticed too every place seems dull and hopeless. I did few things to deal with it.
1: Visit online spaces less often. I know it sounds basic, but I used to sit for hours on imageboards arguing and what not, but this just wastes your time and even makes the discussion worse since you just repeat talking points of random people from the internet, and most of these talking points too just come from worse places like twitter. I've replaced time on the internet with reading books about topics that interests me (which I get from the net). If I have to spend my time reading, I prefer to be it from someone informed than from some twitter addict. I still visit all sorts of online spaces too since I enjoy them, but know that you should set limits.
2: Do stuff you think is important and you like. An other one that's basic, but it works for me. I've made past few years things I enjoyed, be it programming projects, art, cooked a bit. And these are things I can look back and appreciate. Not all of it will be good, most of it will be soykaf and lot of people will tell you that in a very direct and vulgar way. But once in a while you make something good that'll make you proud and others will maybe enjoy it too. it's worth it for those things.
Are these the solution to everything? Not really, no. But It's enough for me in the moment. I don't want to turn into an other depressed guy who does nothing with his life and these are fine steps to take, and I can say I made a few people happy with what I did and I made myself happy too.
As for online spaces, I know you want to stay on them since they are fun. I've been on the internet since I was 6 and can't imagine my life without it, so I fully understand. But the internet has become increadibly boring and nihilistic. And you won't change that by laying down like others, so try out new things and experiment. Being able to connect with the whole world should be exciting and produce something amazing, that can only happen if you reject the current status quo set by social media behemoths with actions from yourself. I recently was reading lot of articles from early internet utopians, because they get me excited about there being some potential for good in the internet that got stolen and forgotten with time. Take a peak at this https://www.eff.org/cyberspace-independence it's a good start.

Well, if you expect there something to come to set you on the right path instantly, that's unlikely to happen. What do you want to do? Lying in bed and complaining won't get you anywhere. You have to set things up in a way that will make you happy. What made me start was realizing that after a certain period of time passed I was stuck with regrets of "what could have been", and "if only I was in position to do something". The only way to get out of that is to be in a state where you won't need to have these regrets.

It's called "anhedonia" and people who haven't experienced it can't understand it. It is a waste of time trying to explain it to them, and they will just call you lazy or uncreative. I've gone from someone who took interest in every detail of my reality and took part in it 100% to someone who just doesn't care. I don't need to look for a new hobby or watch some self-help youtubes either. Just saying, I know how you feel.

I'm sure you've heard this before but you should take psychedelics and read philosophy, preferably at a similar time. I'd especially recommend reading Nietzsche after taking psychedelics.
I've arrived at the apparent meaningless of life through LSD, although during the experience you may come to see it as not necessarily a negative. If you're lucky you'll even get to see the world without your attachments staining your perspective.
As for Nietzsche, who would be a great read after experimenting with psychedelics, he addresses nihilism and the apparent (or """"objective""") lack of purpose to anything. He urges you to create your own, subjective meaning to life through the power of your will. In other words, anything in the world can have meaning, and the only prerequisite for it having meaning is your own desire for it to have meaning. It takes strength of spirit to enforce such meaning and it relies on your strength entirely to continue its existence as meaningful. All else is soykaf.

I don't doubt you've tried a lot, but you can't claim you've done everything. It is not uncommon at all to feel this way though.
It's very important to be honest with yourself. For example, it may just be that you're scared of trying new things. At least that used to be in my case. I got into climbing against my will because I was a dropout (still am) who did nothing all day. I ended up liking it, which is surprising because I had barely done anything physical up until that point.
I don't really care what you do with your life. I just hate when people claim they've tried so much, but never left their own comfort zone. Not saying that's you. Just let me project, ok?
Nell · 2022-02-27 17:12

>take psychedelics and read philosophy, preferably at a similar time
First off you are now talking with two different Lains (I was the one you directly addressed).
Secondly, no. I see value in both psychedelics and philosophy but if you can still read a book while tripping on mushrooms, you have skills I don't have. I start admiring the shapes of the individual letters, taking in the texture of the paper and noticing flecks and flakes of pulp in it.
Third, this isn't nihilism at all. Things matter in the world, very big things which matter very much, and it us foolish to believe any of us have any control over them. As for my own life, I just don't care. Nothing is very exciting anymore. An idea from a book or a euphoric moment in music will give me a lift for a minute but that's all. I have zero interest in creating anything of my own anymore because I derive no pleasure or intellectual satisfaction from it.

The first reason is that there are a lot of young'uns here stuck in a prison
The second reason, and this is the big one, lain, is that the people who haven't given up are too busy trying to fulfill objectives to seek validation. They don't need to make sure there's a reason to feel good, they just do.

I don't mean simultaneously ofcourse lol. I just mean tripping, then reading philosophy, then tripping again etc.
I don't think anything is inherently meaningful, there are just things we gravitate meaningfulness to due to human nature. But many small things can have meaning, we just often don't give them credit for it, especially when socialising when we often mainly talk about things that are mutually meaningful. Ironically I find this to be one of the big contributors as to why we fixate so much on the meaningful things outside our sphere of influence.
If you're interested in an example: I personally care quite a lot that my project PC is exactly how I want it to be and that my room is clean. If these things aren't met I would be very sad. But often things like this are just taken for granted, up until we come across a need/want like this that is not met and can't be met, like for instance our current desire for the end of conflict in Ukraine.

I do not want to be a burden on you. Do not read the spoilers if you want to have a good day. I am sorry for writing this garbage.
> Have you lainons had a similar experience
I really want to be productive and do something with my life, yet I never manage to get much done. I really want to do something and make something of my life, but a part of me is afraid I will never amount to anything and die alone. It doesn't help that I've lost my humanity. It doesn't help that people hate me. It doesn't help that the world is slowly becoming more suffocating and overwhelming. It doesn't help that I've promised myself many times to try again next time when I keep failing. I'm rotting, it hurts.
> doing nothing with my life & slowly running out of time.
This is what is slowly crushing me. My hope that things will change and that I will overcome my ADHD is what gets me out of bed every morning. That hope is slowly dying as my time runs shorter and shorter. I've promised myself I'll kms if I reach 40 and accomplish nothing significant. Though, death doesn't make any difference either, and a part of me is afraid to die in case my sentence in hell becomes worse and I'm robbed of even the hope of any rest. Hope is frail, but hard to kill.
Hope is all that I have right now. I know that if I lobster-bucket I'll just be more miserable and hopeless. I try to do what I can and accomplish small things like gardening or programming to keep my mind off my cursed state / the mirror things. I hope that some day I will have a strong direction, be accomplished, that I will feel fulfillment and purpose. That I will find meaning and purpose in my fleeting life. That I will have lived a meaningful life, and be happy.
I try not to think about these things too much because they make me feel worse, though I can never escape myself at the end of each day. I want to be honest to you, maybe God will be kind to me then? I usually avoid imageboard or videogames because they make me feel worse, but I like going to sushigirl because people try to be kind and cheerful there. I miss when lainchan wasn't a 4chan satellite.
For now I hope for metamorphosis. I do the things that still brings me a small sense of accomplishment and purpose, and I hope that someday I will amount to something meaningful and worthwhile. That I will be less of a plague on everyone around me, and that I will be worthy of love.

>I imagine I'm not the only one here who feels this way. Have you lainons had a similar experience, and if yes, how are you dealing with it?
This is recognizable: I have been at this point for quite a while now; I used to enjoy a lot of what this part of the Internet had to offer and this has changed for the worst in the last few years. This is both because this place change and because I have changed. How I am currently dealing with this is how I usually deal with a situation: I analyze what is occurring, assess the elements, decide what I am able to change 'for the better' in this and subsequently try to work on changing those elements.
Considering this topic - dealing with a place on the Internet that mostly consists of depressing people - I think its firstly important to look at who makes up the population of the Internet now. This has changed so much over the past few years. The recent influx consists mostly of normal people, 'The New Generation' and the 'developing world' (whom I will not discuss at length here). normal people have been talked about aplenty and generally speaking they do not add anything substantial to any place they are at. 'New Gen' is anew ingredient to the mixture and what they're adding thus far, is .. worrisome. Most of the previously mentioned groups stay on the surface web, but still their presence seeps through to places like this. There's also the ever-increasing presence of AI in online fora. I want to remain neutral in whether this presence can be considered benevolent or malevolent, since it's technology and technology is neutral. I do hypothesize that the the interaction between AI and humans will lead to 'colder' communication for humans. This is because humans are adaptive to their surroundings, and when humans that spend most of their time on the Internet, mostly surround themselves with interacting bots, they'll start talking and acting like the bots (it's basically the same mechanism of 'Influencers' on 'Social' Media). Though this can be considered beneficial in some areas, I do not consider this Human-AI interaction beneficial in the area of 'warm' social interaction, and will lead to a 'cold', purely functional exchange of information. Since most humans need to have a connection that is real with the one they're interacting with (ca. 90% of communication is based on non-verbals), seeing more of these 'unreal' interactions as your reality, will lead to dissociative and depressive feels, since the one you're interacting with, does not have the 'feels' to match the words they're conveying. A last variable in this paragraph I do not want to be left unnamed, is the presence of 'Agents' for (N)GO's, who monitor and disrupt online communication for the sole benefit of making these means of communication as unpleasant as possible since a free flow of information is not in the best interest for these organizations. Their presence alone poisons any place.
It's also important to consider that these are very trying times. Though they want to make us forget through the introduction of the Russia-Ukraine conflict - and looming World War because of it - but there has been the 'slow decay' of Western Civilization for the past decades and there was the COVID-19 'pandemic' and all its associated bullshit for the past two years. We are only just seeing the very beginning of the incredible damage this 'pandemic' period has done to people and communities. I consider that one of these things, is that out of their boredom, people turned towards their screen. This explains more depressions because more 'screen time' leads to more depressive feels. Another side to this, is that in the area of social interactions. the past two years have severely stunted social growth and has hindered their ability for normal communication. This is especially true for youngsters and this particular bit I find mostly worrisome: most these have ended up on-line and together with the millions of former-normal people's who also flooded the net, they are turning this place into a wailing wall. Granted, there is a lot to complain about, but it takes the fun out of this place.
I've personally recognized that being on-line in these social communities, does not feel (socially) rewarding to me anymore. It doesn't feel the same as it did before. Though I've amply shown how this can explained because of others, it's also important that I look at myself in this equation (since it is ultimately I that decide to be in his place) and to put it simply: I've changed. I used to enjoy spending hours upon hours behind my computer fulfilling my interests (such as browsing image boards), the enjoyment in these interest has waned. Now I mostly do these things out of a force of habit, hoping that I can experience the same amount of fulfillment I experienced before. The truth is, I can't and the realization is that I do these things out of habit because I did not replace them with other things. The result is that I have few things 'going for me' in my life, which for me leads to being lackluster and having feelings of worthlessness. The only way I see how I can solve this predicament of mine, is to introduce new things into life. The pluses are finding a possible new interest (with all its benefits) and also spending less time on things too much time is spent on. I had already arrived at a similar point in my life ca. two years ago and already started working on 'turning my life around'. COVID-19 and all it's bullshit threw me back a bit, but still I've tried many things since then: some I found much fun (such as dancing and martial arts), others I tried and found boring as soykaf (bridge and gentoo). I also had the fortunate experience to live partially 'off-grid' in nature and without an internet connection for six months last year, which really showed me how much time I spent either feeding or being fed by this machine. It also showed how much I love nature and that trees make good neighbours.
>I really don't want to stop browsing places like this and return to normal person media but at the same time the more time I spend in places like here the more I want to lie in bed and do nothing rather than actually chasing my dreams.
I also don't want to stop browsing the good places on the Internet. What I do want to change is the amount of time and 'social energy' I pour into it and instead want to focus that energy on other interests.

Thanks for the detailed response.
Do you have any ideas of how we could get around these emerging problems? Myself I have contemplated for a while about the eligibility of closed gate forums/imageboards akin to lainchan in nature, but requiring an invitation to even view. This ofcourse firstly contributes further to the problem of turning the internet into a series of walled gardens of which I'm not necessarily a fan of (especially with the endless logins this increasingly requires). I also fail to see how such a community could sustain let alone find a userbase. Most chans or forums don't manage to do so without the invitation requirement. Even lainchan to an extent had to rely on the aesthetic and culture created by an anime series to stand out.
This is more of an individual solution but I've also considered creating a blog website on the tor network, and perhaps linking it to one of the existing ring networks going around. This seems to be more of a programming project rather than a solution for socialising seeing as I couldn't really receive any feedback from my (if any) readers. And neither would I like to be permanently in the spotlight.
While it seems inevitable I do not want to recreate the same websites time and time again after they are infiltrated by what I can only call undesirables. Yet this seems to be the inevitable path of all open forums, which are the dominant model for "socialising" online outside of social media or something like irc, which I wouldn't say fills the same niche.
Meddler · 2022-03-02 13:47
Giving up doesn't need to be depressing. I stopped giving a soykaf and I've never been happier. The three key points to realize when giving up are:
1. Every social/societal structure beyond family bonds and personal relationships is fake and always has been, so rules/laws/conventions pertaining to such can be bent or ignored most of the time.
2. Nothing can make you happy, you need to decide you want to be happy, even if it takes a lot of effort. There are depressed billionaires and homeless people walking on air. The source of your happiness is not external.
3. You don't need approval from strangers and authority figures. If they don't like how you live your life then it's better that they stay out of it, but don't become anti-social and start disregarding the feelings of those you love, or those you think you might grow to love.
Give up on society, not on life. Forget everything you've ever been told and just follow your dreams. Your real dreams, not your career goals. If you were one of those kids who wanted to be a wizard, musician, mad scientist, cowboy, hacker, kung-fu master or anything else they told you was a silly waste of time, now is the time. Their world is crumbling around them and the all-mighty dollar is weak, your world is yet to be born and when it comes you will decide what's valuable.

This "pandemic" has just unwrapped the bandage on a necrotic wound, it's created nothing, just shown all the weak and useless points in society. The people who benefit from the way things are will try their best to cover it up again or make people accept it, but the only way we can heal is to cut out the piece of necrotic flesh.
>I consider that one of these things, is that out of their boredom, people turned towards their screen. This explains more depressions because more 'screen time' leads to more depressive feels. They really went "torture yourself via isolation so you can be safe". I'm convinced they don't care about money, it's just a means, they really just want to get off on people's suffering (all the better if they're coerced into it).
The only way you can "win" is not to play. They have restrictions placed on them, and they can only get so far because of the fear and mistrust they generate. All those apocalyse shows were shown for a reason. Even the Hz in use have a negative effect on humans minds. They can't force you to do anything, especially if you have like minded people around you, stay out of their games and they can't touch you.

>Do you have any ideas of how we could get around these emerging problems?
Yes, but those ideas are impossible for me to unite with the principle of a free and open Internet. It's very difficult to circumvent/avoid these problems since the creators of these problems (the population I was talking about) are everywhere, and are growing in numbers and thus in presence. This means that by default there is a regression to the mean, and this also means there is a regression of the leading principles to what the general pleb want. You'll only be able to change the leading principles for the general pleb, if you are able to influence/guide what they consider as such. Nowadays, this power mostly lies in the hands of the Institutes, which in turn have been in the hands of the Leviathan for some time now.
Back to our little corner of the sandbox: putting up some sort of door check would help ward out any undesirables, but that decision is a threat to the open spirit of the Internet, which I consider its greatest strength. Fact remains that every good place that doesn't have some sort of walling, inevitably gets trampled by the horde (as we are experiencing right now). Walled gardens - as you beautifully put it - are a way to keep them out and I think the PHPP forums are a manifestation of this principle: anyone can see the content, but only people with an account can make posts. The problem with those places (usually) is the influx of new users (PHPP forums aren't popular ways of interacting online) and considering this place - a forum centering around an obscure anime show from fin-de-millennium Japan - it's not strange few new users find these waters let alone feel at home in it.
>This is more of an individual solution but I've also considered creating a blog website on the tor network, and perhaps linking it to one of the existing ring networks going around.
Is that like I2P?
>This seems to be more of a programming project rather than a solution for socialising seeing as I couldn't really receive any feedback from my (if any) readers.
I'm not good at programming, but isn't sharing information online basically what the wired was about?

It's very hard to change people's behaviour in real life, let alone online. The only way I see how this can be handled in an open and public place, is by leading by example, through which I am displaying my leading principles. This in turn will influence others with the hopes that start displaying these leading principles.

There is nothing like "take and never give back" in this world, if you live out of somebody's job, they're slaves for you too. You're feeding it and leeching it, perpetuating the cycle.
I must say I envy autists who have the privilege to stay home being "who they are" while mom and dad or peers sweat their asses because if not, family and autistic bob will starve. Anyway, I fully admire people who just give up and go out there forever. They will starve, get robbed or raped, but they will be free, at least from what tortures us. The other solution is to become "insane".
If I'm being too bluepilled, I request, please, some congruent explanation about this. How to become ungovernable? In practical ways. Because I really want to gracefully give up my hellish reality and not just get fuarrrked in the street or get shot in some rural property, cause mom and dad aren't there for me and even if they were I would never accept that because I'm no whore.

Whether the autist is leeching is purely subjective.
Could as well say the autist is just taking his just damage payments. For in first place it's likely society that made him autistic due to the choices people allowed that harm fetal development and caused autism rates to spike over the last century.
Whenever people talk about justice it tends to be biased towards their own gain or crab bucket mentality. Its extremely rare that people speak out against their own interests intentionally (many will do argue unintentionally against their own interests as they are too stupid to see it harms them)

Isn't that the truth? Ain't all personal opinions subjective and biased?
I'd be a huge asshole if I believed that the best way to look at the autist in this hypothetical scenario is as a leech to society and a burden to his family. But that's also true. Shouldn't be the main way to feel it, but it is true. I'd feel that way if it were me, because I'm kind of fuarrrked in the head too but not to the point of losing pride over what I'm trying to achieve. Yet. I gave myself two more years of ruthless grind. If I don't (at least kinda) succeed or get to somewhere better I'm going to kill myself or 'give up' in that sense. At least is what I've promised to myself in order to cope.

I believe that's a rather cynical mentality. Anyone can say soykaf out of heart on an imageboard that they think it's right but doesn't exactly "benefits" their interest. It's called being honest about what you think/feel. There is no harm in that.
Is "herd" being filtered to crab bucket now? Lol, nice.

Well, apparently it isn't.

Personally society roadblocks you hard enough that you dont have to feel bad about using any exploit you find to get something back. Its only different for family if family is good which is then just reciprocating good behaviour which is less about family and more about trying to give good people a good treatment. Lastly I think ragequitting life is lame. At that point i would rather engage in high risk options otherwise avoided. At the minimum yolo investing because why not? What do you have to lose when youre ready to ragequit anyway?
crab bucket mentality is a term referring to people who rather pull peers down to their level than try to improve. In a bucket no crab can get out of the bucket because they pull each other back down. A simple example is fat people trying various ways of self delusion with the fat acceptance movement and trying to hinder any fatty working to get fit rather than taking fit as a goal to reach themself. Another common example is ghetto kids sabotaging kids working hard to get grades to escape the ghetto. Less clear but almost universally affecting the entire population is people financially illiterate supporting policies that hurt them because they eat up the adds telling it would help.

I partially agree with this. I just don't think ANY exploit we find is even comprehensible, such as freeloading good people who give their blood to the system unconsciously. Being a tiny version of the system itself. But this is just a matter of personal morality to me. I think it's wrong if I did it, but I don't think it's wrong for someone who have been ruined by family to freeload family. I also know that my morals make no good to myself.
But I have to give you this, I have no idea of what to do other than to be a wagie, gather bucks and go to woods. I literally just want to be left alone, it's all I've ever wanted, I don't even crave love or closure anymore. I would just go to woods and be myself if I had the bucks, but I'm not this guy, have zero external support and if I quit my job, the chances that I can get serisously fuarrrked is very high, so sometimes when I see these hopeful liberating memes I think about my reality and get butthurt, lol. Also when I think about other people. Good people with no practical options. So ragequitting is always lame, but sometimes is more dignifying than to remain soykaf.
