Achieving passive income

John Rain · 2022-01-27 16:28
One of my goals in life is to achieve financial independence in order to persuade hobbies and personal projects. I dislike work (like most people) and I want none to do with it. In my country, I can live very comfortably with about $500 per month. I earn more working as a programmer, but I don't mind lowering my income in exchange of freedom. This thread is meant for sharing of ideas of how to gain this freedom. Do you have any side projects that earn you relevant money? Do you have a plan for early retirement? Tell me about it!
Gyula Kovacs · 2022-01-27 17:10
You already say you're a lazy fuarrrk and now you expect me to generate ideas for you to make money? fuarrrk yourself, you fuarrrking leech.
John Doe · 2022-01-27 17:18
Alright, maybe that was rude but you gotta come up with stuff yourself too. I guess you did though, because you say you're into programming. I know licensing is a good passive income; you write a program and other people use it for X amount of dough a month
Case · 2022-01-27 17:34
>>55894 Relax, friendo. I'm not trying to steal your ideas or whatever, I would like this to be a thread were people who think alike can share their thoughts on the subject. I'm currently working, and has been since I finished high school. So no, I'm not some lazy fuarrrk, I'm just real with myself: I'd rather be doing something else with my life. >>55895 Yeah, it was unnecessarily rude. As for licensing, I agree, it would be a nice model for software. Another idea would be to partner up with similar minded individuals, form a co-op and try to get into consulting. Maybe something related to crypto like smart contracts, because there's a lot of money in that.

Consulting aint passive income, you still work and get paid / hour. Unless you mean "consulting" aka fake job to get kickbacks for something different than job description. codemonkey passive income is writing web api's which usage you run on a subscription or pay/use model. The hilarious part is all they do is mostly just aggregate and hide other peoples free work behind their api to sell it.
Vasya Pupkin · 2022-01-27 18:37
>>55897 >Consulting aint passive income, you still work and get paid / hour. Yes, you're right about that. I was thinking more of a "step" towards the goal which would be passive earnings. >Unless you mean "consulting" aka fake job to get kickbacks for something different than job description. I'm not sure what you mean by this but no, I wouldn't want to lie or deceive anyone. >codemonkey passive income is writing web api's which usage you run on a subscription or pay/use model. The hilarious part is all they do is mostly just aggregate and hide other peoples free work behind their api to sell it. I guess that would be an option? Still, I would like it to be more ethical or whatever. I don't want to leech off other people's work. I would like to develop a service or software that requires minimal maintenance and has enough clients that it earns me $500ish a month. Here are some examples: Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2022 – Show and tell https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29995152 There's a dude that made Trello add-ons and is making $500 a month for example. And a lot other examples. Obviously it's extremely biased but oh well.

Some sharedhosting providers have a thing where you can middleman for them. Basically you make a Lain's Great Webhost, but it's just a front-end for some other bigger name web host. You can probably do the same with pretty much any other service: VPNs, VPSs, dedicated servers, proxies. You can also rent dedicated servers and use those to provide people with VPSs, VPNs, email, etc, directly. Ads make for passive income, if you can bear throwing ads on your stuff. One of my coworkers throws ads on simple mobile apps she made to learn mobile dev and gets $100 a month from it. Along the same line, posting referral links can make you a little money as well, if you're able to get decent traffic. I know one person who used to own vending machines that were stationed in laundromats and hotels. He would just spend 2 hours a week stocking them. That used to be pretty good, but now many hotels stock their own snacks to sell at a higher markup and won't rent the space for 3rd party vending machines. There are still other good spots, but the guy I know stopped doing it. Likewise, arcade cabinets and ATMs have a similar level of effort and can be good if the location is good. Notably, ATMs put you at a high risk of getting mugged when you reload them. I used to work with a guy who owns three houses. Lives in one, rents the other two. They're all in different states, so he uses a third party company that handles finding tenants and performing maintenance. It's very passive. He could easily have lived off of that.

I've given this a lot of personal thought OP, and here are my conclusions. Most forms of "passive" investing aren't passive at all and require so much labor during your free time that you're better off just enjoying yourself. I'd rather learn a new language or an instrument rather than learn some dev skills to put in hundreds of hours to make some soykafty API or whatever that'll bring in $500/mo. The most effective way to rapidly earn more money is to invest in your career. Getting a pay raise will bring you a lot more money than doing side projects. Now as you get more money, you can save more money. With your savings, you should invest. Through investing, you should hopefully build enough wealth to retire at an early age assuming you keep your costs as low as possible without sacrificing quality of life. Now, investing is where you can get "true" passive income, but it's not so simple. For the stock market, dividends are good but it's going to take a lot of capital to get to the point where you can live off your dividends. Plus, choosing good stocks to pay out good dividends is difficult and it will take as much opportunity cost to get good at investing as the opportunity cost to do another form of passive income. If you want to put as least time into stock market investing, do some basic Vanguard/Fidelity total market ETFs and chill out. Just hope that the market doesn't 2008 again. Another form of investing is real estate. However, buying rentable property isn't cheap. Furthermore, you will be a landlord, which is ethically comprimising. I personally wouldn't be a landlord as I think it's morally reprehensible, but this is technically one of the best ways to get passive income through rent. As a side note, completely ignore crypto as it's a grift.
Jens Hansen · 2022-03-18 11:09
>As a side note, completely ignore crypto as it's a grift. Ignoring the crypto space overall is a pretty good idea, if you need a space to park your money without having to think too much about 'investing' you'd do good understanding the basics of bitcoin. It is a bit technical, but once you get it you don't need to know much, and you don't have to chase after hypes. I wouldn't recommend it to generate passive income though. Crypto that promises that is usually a sc

fiat is a grift and crypto is the solution.
Just another Random Lainon · 2022-03-18 15:04
If that was possible like this, out of the fuarrrking bag, there would be no depression in my life, friendo. The one and only problem with my damn life right now is that I have to deal with a lot of retarded users on tech support BECAUSE I HAVE TO fuarrrkING EXIST. I would rather work 15h a day with computers in my soykafty house and don't see a single person for a year than to bear this. But I live in a hick town and would starve because you need to be a PUA manipulative salesman with a trendy haircut so you can lure retards to your shenanigans. Lainons, maybe studying electronics can make me a guy who get people's hardware in my house! Is it possible? I could move to a larger town or whatever. Also, I'm lurking this thread because I need ideas too and I'm in deep deep pain right now, lol.
Chani · 2022-03-18 21:27
It's reprehensible but I've been looking into getting involved in the sneakerbot development / infrastructure space as a secondary way to generate income and stave off the burnout/anxiety I'm feeling from my regular job.

Not sure where you live but getting on disability for a mental illness even like depression or a disability like autism is possible too. Even in the US which has a terrible system you would get $700 a month.

>>55906 To add to this look into the boom and bust cycles, Ben Graham, and (if you so decide) Austrian economics and then buy stocks that are undervalued or have a marging of safety. As for being a landlord that is a pain in the arse. Airbnb a property if you can. Higher margins, your guests tend to be slightly more greatful, short term rentals have more favorable regulation, and is just less hassle. Airbnb is what I plan to do and in theory could expatriate but want to build my portfolio a bit more and maybe change careers to max my working income.

>>55892 It's not the good old time. Pretend to be handicapped, mental or physical and you are set. Tens of millions of people life off social money. Don't feel too bad for other people, the destiny of all democracies is to have all of its population to discover that they can live at other people depends. Then, it either end in a brutal invasion or with a dictator. You have not chosen the rules of the game, you just chose how you play it.

>>57264 Best of luck friend. Once you can scrounge some money up I would move to a better area and get a better job. I tried this 2 times and 4 years later I went from a dweeb who was on Airbnb couches to owning two properties and working at a bank. Also go to school if you can but don't knock yourself out. When I was taking school online I knew I could not sit around as my town was soykaf so I moved and I am glad I did.

>>55892 it's so easy you don't even believe. just go to a doctor and tell them that you're hearing voices and seeing things, and then you'll get an easy disability diagnosis. use the diagnosis to apply for disability income in your country.

>>58229 Hey lainon, I appreciate your reply. I thought of various solutions for my agony, one of them was to move to a better place, but I don't know if my workstyle is too contaminated by my surroundings to apply them in more sophisticated environments. Don't know if I'm ready. I sure can deal with a soykaf ton of pressure and multiple problems at the same time, but I just think I'd be too ooga booga for these places. Can't know without trying tho. Thanks a lot for the advice, good luck as well.

>>58260 I feel like I go two years and then fuark something up so i know the feeling. I am just trying to sort stuff atound and hold my guts together at the current job but have been working on some passive income as well. Also I feel like I need to switch to programming as it would help with the tisms. Also I could work remote, which would help as well. I am trying to keep it together so I know how that is. As far as cities, I am not saying all cities are equal. Try to find the place no one wants to live ( say Nebraska or Oklahoma) and check rents, economics, and job prospects, and you should be ok. I made the mistake of moving to San Diego and despite having low unemployment it fuarrrked wirh me but then I moved where no one wanted to move and I am getting ahead. That is one option but I get not say wanting to be in thr Jesus belt or whatever. Ironically the place I moved burst into "one of those places" ,even though it was not in the top 10 when I moved.

>>55896 >Maybe something related to crypto like smart contracts, because there's a lot of money in that. Here's a free idea: smart contract auditing firm. You don't even need to be especially skilled, because crypto startups don't actually give a soykaf about security they just want a rubber stamp their investors can use to pretend they're making responsible investments. They are loaded and willing to throw stupid amounts of money at this. There are free open source tools that generate security reports for smart contracts, you can just use those and edit it a bit, add some warnings about irrelevant soykaf like anywhere the code formatting does not match some style guide. A lot of the competition just got taken out because it is based in Russia. The biggest thing to worry about is just making sure your website looks believably professional and you can act like you know what you're doing. As others have pointed out crypto is largely a grift so obviously if you want to be very ethical maybe avoid this, but I think it would be very likely to work.

>>58290 >I feel like I go two years and then fuark something up so i know the feeling Yeah, yeah. I'm one of those. I guess it's just an effect of disliking the reality of society, so. In the end I just want to be left alone for a long time. Completing 2 years working in the local IT market in my town and holy fuarrrk, am I tired of this. I just know that if I change course once again I may not stand for being a newbie all over again and soykaf may hit fan for me. >Try to find the place no one wants to live ( say Nebraska or Oklahoma) and check rents, economics, and job prospects, and you should be ok I live in what you would call an Iowa of the third world, so yeah, actual Nebraska would be great. fuarrrking thing is, I gotta grind 10x more if I'm supposed to have financial peace at some point. One is because I'm kind of old and still in college, two is because of my country. But honestly, I'm taking your suggestion seriously. Maybe I can at least have money enough to go to another state by the end of the year. Thank you, Lain.
