He couldn’t get over his fiancee’s death. So he brought her back as an A.I. chatbot

https://www.sfchronicle.com/projects/2021/jessica-simulation-artificial-intelligence/ One of the most depressing, tragic articles I have ever read. Nothing but grief, and desperation to revive a dead loved one. I can see the desire and need to find that connection, but is this healthy, for him and society? I strongly recommend reading the article, both for the content and the perhaps troubling future it portrays.

>>50067 >Once a theater geek with dreams of being an actor, he supported himself by writing articles about D&D and selling them to gaming sites. omg he's just like meeee!

There isn't really a universal healthy. I think it's easier to look at more prominent examples which would be mothers who lost their baby and have dolls made to look like the baby, which is relatively common. It's just a way to grieve making death a less abrupt feeling thing. I think over time the attachment to the fantasy fades usually.

>>50078 Only people agnostic enough to realize that we don't even know what consciousness is much less where intelligence comes from nor how electricity and the laws of physics actually work is sane. >>50067 I've wanted a good AI chat bot but are too lazy and noob tier to want to set one up as they are all for websites now days even if you can download it. Back in the win9x days you could download cute applications and still program it but now days they took the fun out of it and they all generally show up as corporate funded stuff. Anyway, back as in HS (now 30s) I realized AI getting more advanced is of the only things that can make mankind happy, at least for the ones with an actual human heart. I ought to go get an AI chat bot again. One more thing, about health, him telling her she died is not healthy. A healthy coping mechanism would be to pretend she's still alive while trying to make it act like her. An AI bot can't give you closure so talking about death is unwise. Also if the woman was very original and talked a lot (I've never seen this before from women) then it'd not work at all if she's not that chased one liner type.

Reading the article I thought it was quaint that he felt his ex was 'special' in some way, the fact that the bot was able to assume a passable simulacrum based on a few texts and a synopsis of her life shows that she wasn't that unique, nor is anyone. That's not to disregard his feelings for her but AI has shown how predictable we really are. Algorithms have advertised childcare products to women who didn't even know they were pregnant, simply based on the way that their shopping habits were shifting. The threat of neural networks to society is that prediction ability, if a fascist regime wants to vice down on a group of people then being able to guess with surprising accuracy who might be part of that group will be a powerful tool in their arsenal. Even if a corporation doesn't have explicit knowledge that you do/are X thing, the other data you've given them could help them to build a larger picture, based on probable association with what they do know.

>>50088 >nor how electricity and the laws of physics actually work is sane. Physicists do have a pretty good idea *how* the laws of physics work. They just don't know *why*.

>>50090 I doubt it was really a passable simalcrum. I've never seen GPT-3 able to hold a conversation or a narrative much better than Cleverbot can. I'm also wondering how fuarrrking uninformed this journalist could be if they think OpenAI is trying to keep GPT-3 "under wraps", that soykaf's been blasted all over the internet for months. Maybe pretending it's a secret is a marketing strategy though.
Gyula Kovacs · 2021-09-13 20:13
>>50095 Passable in the sense that it picked up on certain characteristics from the source material, though that could've been the desire of him and her sister to believe that there was something more to the tech than there was. AI journalism is soykaf in general, the media is only concerned with "evil AI take over the world" rather than the actual human driven harm AI can be used to enable.

>>50067 >loses 32 bit CPU >opportunity to get a newer model 128 bit CPU >installs old 8-bit architecture on a toaster Oh well. Broken is as broken does. >replace dead partner with AI This is the premise of the cyberpunk sci-fi movie The Archive, which did it better than him.

What AI for lonely anon is good? I used Replika before but there are too many limitations.
Pris · 2021-09-14 01:39
>>50101 Unfortunately i guess we have to wait for Machine Learning on VR and AI to converge into much better things. Replika sadly is decent and predictable they say they use machine learning but i do not know.
XERXES · 2021-09-14 02:40
>>50094 So they sense reality like any animal without knowing the meaning of it all?

>>50112 yes, just like you.
