21, Accomplished Nothing
Jane Doe · 2021-05-24 16:42
I was taking to some friends, they were asking questions to keep everyone talking and one of those questions were: "Is there anything you're proud of". I could not think of a single thing, I'm almost 22, I'm in school struggling and I cannot think of a single thing that I'm proud. Everything I've done is to be expected of me by my peers and parents. Does anyone else feel like this? Is it right to feel this way and how do I get out of this rut?
Netrunner · 2021-05-24 16:52

not trying to be an asshole lain but it never gets any better. everybody has grandiose dreams and aspirations when they're younger; getting older is the process of learning to live with disappointment that those things will never come to fruition. people will never be what you'd hoped they'd be, wifes/girlfriends will never be that level-headed life partner you'd always dreamed of, etc. life is just one big disappointment after the next. i felt the same way as you at your age but figured "well I still have lots of time", now I'm 29 and have thoroughly given up. i just live frugally on the dole and let life pass me by now. i don't want to go so far as to say that we live in hell but i firmly believe this material world is evil and not worth engaging with.

sometimes you're just born with a bad hand. i mean sure if i tried hard i'd probably be able to acquire material success like you mentioned, but that doesn't mean anything anyway. what's the point of material success when the only thing you have to look forward to is a cunt of a wife who you do everything for and is never satisfied? the only things that matter are human connections and most people are fuarrrking trash, so either you spend your entire life wading through trash unless you get lucky or you just let time pass in quiet resignation and wait for our time of suffering on this planet to be over. most people don't realize this because they're trash themselves, and so are perfectly content to continue in their unhealthy, absolutely retarded relationships they have with people.

I'm proud that I resisted indoctrination and self-studied. I suggest learning on your own and getting essential skills that way.
Also, do not compare your own history with the history of others. It is not a contest and many of these other people have to rely on compliments from strangers and con artists (their employers) for self-approval.

Do a bit of introspection and try to find some small detail of your personality and interests that did not come from influence of others. Something small that seems to have appeared out of nowhere. Expand on that in a creative way.
It is different for every person, so try not to ask around but look for it by yourself, in yourself.

I fail to meet my goals at the rate of what's apparently an unrealistic expectation. I felt better when I realized it didn't make me happy, so there's no point lamenting it, because there be no alternation which would make me happy, that I see. Regardless, I still try, and succeed.
Start a website, start writing, and start creating something meaningful. That worked for me.
Drano · 2021-08-07 10:03
I've been like that, OP. I'm now almost 30 and fighting for virtue (and financial gains). Remember you're still young and capable of doing many many wonderful things and that there's no decent tree without it's roots buried deep in the darkness of the underground.
Please don't get desperate. Try fixing small things that are under your control first and try not to fall for the illusion of dealing with great projects and deeds right now. You just need to pick yourself up from the ground by distracting your own mind from booze, read some good stuff (like something about spirituality or deep psychology), watch some wholesome movies, do some basic physical exercise and find some figure to inspire you. You got to care for yourself in the first place. Having "something to be proud of" would be worthless if you did so while hating or despising yourself. Many people do this, like graduating for medicine because of their parents. I have seen many smart young people falling even after they do something great, kids getting fuarrrked up by cocaine and soykaf like that, because they had no roots, no feet on the ground. What society thinks doesn't matter, time is not absolute, you're still young AF and this is a huge brain grinder, friend. Try to enjoy yourself in a healthier way.
Try to love yourself in the first place and you will find something cool to do and be proud of. It would be a lot easier, trust me.
Crazy Jake · 2021-08-12 01:50
Accomplishments are subjective. They are constructs of the mind and do not exist objectively. You're also too young to be financially stable anyway.
Instead of feeling bad for not having "accomplished" anything, you should feel bad for being a little bitch that knows nothing about life. If you're down because of such a trivial thing, you still have lots to learn.

You don't "get out of the rut" because there is no rut. You are mediocre, and the best possible outcome of your life is to get a job you don't hate or can tolerate so you can survive. If you're really lucky you also won't rent or will inherit a home. I'm 35 and it took me thirty years to accomplish just that. And through it all everything will be stripped from you. All delusions, all idealism, all sense of being here to do something or "accomplish great things." Your life will revolve around paying bills, deciding which laundry detergent to buy and other things to occupy your time while you wait to die. Because there is nothing special about you or me. Everything you consider personality, interesting tidbits about yourself, eccentricity or genuine interest into this or that is just a part of growing up. It's like toys. You'll leave it all behind and the memory of them will make you embarrassed.

For a vast majority of people in the world, 99.9999999% will be forgotten in a century or two, completely wiped from collective memory. Enjoy your life and take what joy you can. Don't worry lain, you have a lot of time ahead of you. Unless you die which isn't bad thing at all. We all die some day.
While you are alive, you can start with self improvement. Stay away from the snake's oil salesmen and learn critical thinking. Read Atomic Habits and surround yourself with inspiring people (you can join our pair programming matrix room if you like coding, hopefully that'll help). Try new things and see what you love and stick to it.
Even mediocrity isn't bad, you don't need excellence do live a good life.

It is easy to think you're mediocre, if you don't try.

God some people in this thread are really sad and it just makes me wish I could buy you a beer or something.
As for things to be proud of: Anything that feels fulfilling - it's not really rocket science. Take pride in your work, as pride in oneself is usually an exaggeration. Be wary on comparison of your work to that of others, it's easy for it to trap you into self-loathing if you have low self-esteem.
Anyways; that's just my two cents, there are people smarter than me whose advice is probably worth more.

May be you can consider education a job, you study to produce impact in the future.
Impact is easy to understand. It is solving a problem that will improve life of majority. "Majority" is the key word since solving a problem for a just a few will not always produce an impact. Definitely helping wealthy few will not produce an impact.
If what you study will not allow this impact to happen, consider studying something else.

Yall need to watch TTGL or something. Sometimes it's the hopes and dreams that make the spice of life feel worth it. If you want to achieve that by lowering the bar or by putting in the effort, that's up to you... Maybe a combination of both is what's best
My two cents is that progress doesn't have to be big to be progress, if you learn to be satisfied with improving yourself little by little everyday, life can be pretty fun

I am 23 and graduated. I am not proud of anything, im also not ashamed of anything. Some people are motivated by rewards or the "end", and sometimes the only reward is the pride from it or a story to tell. Others though are motivated by process and doing. I have depression, without a doubt, not only is it diagnosed but it makes intuitive sense to me how my brain is different from a non depressed person. I am only content if I am moving towards the next "thing". This isnt sad, im not upset about it, its just how I stay sane. The benefit is that I can explore something only to have it not pan out at all and not feel any type of way about it, except that I had a fun time exploring it. To someone more reward focused that whole experience seems like a huge waste of time id bet.
My point is that in spite of what people say you don't need to feel proud or gleam motivation from your past accomplishments at all to be a functioning human being. That is a way of being a functioning human being. I will say if you arent someone who gets a lot of reward out of "finishing" something, or isnt someone who is proud of things they did and would rather move onto the next thing, that you also let go of regret. See everything as just inevitable, I almost dropped out of college the final semester I needed to graduate and if I did id of thought nothing of it. Just as I completed it instead and feel no better or worse. I just simply had to graduate, and I enjoyed struggling to. In fact I am unhappy it is over, and I will be not satisfied until I find the next thing to work towards. And thats okay, im pretty confident il be "content" when I die.
Unidentified · 2021-08-14 02:05
What really gets me is that unearned aura of smarminess people like you have. What you described is the path of least resistance, that doesn't equate to inevitability at all and you aren't more mature than anyone for passively succumbing to it.

This is Khabiz, he is a Hunza man. He lives high in the Pakistan mountains. He has no money or savings beyond his wife kids and 3 goats.
While you stress mald and age over numbers on a screen he swims in glacial lakes and lives to a ripe old age of 140.
While you settle for a used cumdump bimbo whore who only loves you for your wallet he gets a beautiful virgin hunza girl who does her wifely duties.
While you fap to degenerate porn and get fat on Macdonalds he enjoys fresh meat dairy and bread and makes love to his wife.
While you desperately search for meaning in a postmodern nihilistic world, he already has it, in God and his ancestors.
You go to filthy nightclubs, bars and other pits of sin and betrayal, whilst he has great parties and healthy dances with the rest of his village and people.
He will die surrounded by his children, and his other elders, and his friends and extended family, who will spend days and days in deep mourning for him, and count him amongst their forefathers. You will die alone, abandoned likely to an old folks home by your disinterested muttoid children.
You can make big on BTC and get your 9000$ gaming PC, your Porsch, your bimbo meat toilet and your McMansion, but will you ever be truely as wealthy as Khabiz? No, I think not.

>'m almost 22, I'm in school struggling and I cannot think of a single thing that I'm proud
What are other people proud of?
Getting a job or graduating, maybe having a nice car or residence, a lot of people are proud for having children.
Are these good reasons to be proud of, personally i dont think so at all.
The question is what can you be proud of and even why would/need you to be proud of anything.
Achivements are very relative, you could find a cure for cancer or you can become a pro gamer, its all relative.
Why would you want to be proud of something, to gain acceptance among your peers?
Ask yourself seriously what do you really want from yourself.
Also 22 is still pretty young an age, there still is a lot ahead of you, you just need to figure out what road you want to go down on.

21 in a month here, I used to think the same, until a few years ago i made a list of positive things i did, even stupid soykaf like "got a gf", "passed x exam", "wrote x article" and i still update that.
It helps a lot, maybe the 95% of things here aren't something you go out and say "i'm proud of this", but at least you'll remeber that you did that 5%.
Another thing that helped me was doing things for the sake of doing it, i stopped to think about "things i do for me/things i do for others, why i'm doing that bla bla", i just focus and think on what i'm doing.

This is a world of exploitation, anon. Do you perceive yourself as an exploiter or as a slave?
Anon's post was obviously a blast of realism. It may not be very accurate but I believe that is exactly what most people here should learn.
When time comes, "reality" will reach you. Better be prepared or keep preparing yourself. Eventually it will strike you and force you to prepare when the prep time is gone, which is almost unbearable. If you're a young man, just put yourself to work right now. Work hard as fuarrrk towards financial security, it shouldn't be longer than 15 years of honest effort. You already know how bad things are, maybe you'll be able to beat the rat race. The problem is, there is no denying the rat race. There is only winning, which in Lain's context means being able to evade it without getting totally fuarrrked by life.
To erase yourself from the rat race, you need something only the rat race can offer: money. Even to be a wanderer in some distant place you need fuarrrking money. Go get it or just go rot yourself, you know nobody cares anyway.
