How are you holding up, lain? The heatwaves in California have been fuarrrking killing me and I feel bad for all of my electronics. I really want to leave this soykafty state or maybe even country, but I don't have any connections so it's hard to do on my own, espeically without having any marketable skills.

storms in iowa took down power for weeks just got power a few days, lost week of pay.
Cereal Killer · 2020-08-19 03:17
>>30891 That is like kicking dead whales down the beach. Due to the heat waves, they've been doing rolling power outages here. How did you lose a week of pay? How is Iowa for you these days?
Hitomi · 2020-08-19 03:22
Rolling brownouts in MA too. I guess from everyone running their AC. In better news I'm moving to a much cheaper apartment so I'm thinking about upgrading my 8 year old PC with the money I'm going to be saving. Virus pushing my job online means I don't need to live near work for at least 6 months.
Erik Johansson · 2020-08-19 03:26
>>30893 Sounds sweet, what are you planning on upgrading?
Mentat · 2020-08-19 03:34
>>30894 Full rebuild pretty much. I want a new ryzen CPU so I'd need a motherboard to go with it anyway. At that point might as well buy a case and ps and give my current desktop to my sister since she's been wanting a gaming computer (amazingly this thing can still run new games pretty well). I'm thinking lots of cores and lots of RAM. Like a vm workstation type build. I already have a good graphics card so that knocks out a big chunk of the price.

>>30893 >>30895 I'm also rebuilding my 8 year old PC, what a coincidence. I've bought pretty much everything I need except the videocard. The components I have will lie around collecting dust while I'll be saving up that extra money for the card. I just hope the prices won't get any worse in four/five months' time.

I spent most of my free time today putting the finishing touches on a script to convert instruments from VOPM (an emulator for Yamaha FM synth chips) to an FL Studio plugin called Toxic Biohazard. Main reason is because FL has a really intuitive way to do pitch bending, but it only works for native plugins and not for VSTs. But it didn't go well. I figured the latter plugin would be flexible enough to handle it, but sadly it wasn't. For one, it doesn't even handle percentage-to-dB scaling in any logical way. There is another plugin, an older one called Sytrus. I tested a couple things and it seems like it might do what I need. Only problem is, the preset format for it is either compressed or encrypted, because looking at a hex dump of it doesn't show anything resembling structure. Honestly I need to move away from FL and over to a better DAW. Only reason I still use it is because it's what I've been using since I was like 13, and I'm used to it. But it doesn't handle VSTs all that well, especially with me running it in Wine.

>>30889 i'm pretty good. currently on academic leave due to depression, but got a job. the rabbit hole of huge java codebases strangely enough is quite intriguing. remote work is very comfy. heatwaves are also commonplace where i live. i fuarrrking hate heat, cannot tolerate anything above 80. the poor ventilation conditions in my small room are very annoying. and it's pretty lonely. but other than that things are good. >>30893 i never saw a necessity to upgrade my old i7 860. cpu performance has been stagnant for a decade. but if you play games a lot it might be worth it
Switch · 2020-08-19 18:16
>>30904 >i never saw a necessity to upgrade my old i7 860 Yeah, that's why I've been running the same system for so long. My motivation here is more that I want a different kind of system, specifically one that can handle a heavier virtualization workload (plus some minor problems I have with the motherboard like it not having enough PCI slots, not accepting DDR4 RAM, not having m.2 slots). But yeah, if I were just gaming this system would be fine indefinitely. >>30898 I recommend renoise. It's a weird little DAW but when you get used to that it's kind of like ableton with a really clever sampler built right into the core of it.
SHODAN · 2020-08-19 18:29
>>30908 bitwig is a good ableton-like daw if ur not into trackers. Just maybe the og version the new ones a paid subscription.

>>30889 I am in between a rock and a hard place and it feels like everyone around me is either useless or apathetic as hell.
Ivan Horvat · 2020-08-20 04:30
>>30889 Been lucky in Los Angeles... no electrical or other service interruptions so far. Ditto on thinking about moving, though. It's only a matter of time until increasing heat and decreasing water make the area unlivable. Canada (BC) would be ideal, but even Vancouver, Washington or Portland, Oregon would be ok I think. Plenty of rain near the coast and the Columbia river isn't going away. Must be hell up around San Francisco with all the wildfires.

I've been feeling nostalgic lately. Not only that, but I've been haunted by the "future that never came", if that makes sense. I've never been a fan of Vaporwave and other movements sharing the same core idea, but it all caught up with me anyway. Although it's comforting to revel in the old content and media, the nostalgia, and then daydream about what could have been, I find it to be quite depressing and quick to bog one down. What do you think about it? Have you experienced anything like this?
Terzibashjian · 2020-08-20 08:53
>>30917 Maybe not quite the same and for me it may just be self-inflicted, but it is despairing to feel fond of a time and place you were never part of and simultaneously be unable to live in the present, being actively part of something that someone else later down the line will be able to look back on. Maybe it's precisely because I'm stuck in the past, that I'm unable to do anything now. I think I just have to accept that what was, never will be, and all I can do is adapt and make the best out of what is, instead of daydreaming of what was.
Tequila · 2020-08-21 23:01
>>30917 All the time, man. A lot of the nostalgia I feel isn't so much "I wish I could experience that again" as it is "I wish I could have experienced that to begin with". I missed out on a lot of 00s culture despite being a teenager throughout the decade, mostly due to being poor and sheltered. So when people reminisce about those times, I usually can't relate. No dressing like an emo/scene/skater kid, no chatting with friends on AIM because I had no friends, nothing. I didn't even get to experience very much of the online world because my computer was just that terrible. Couldn't play any of the games the other kids were playing, couldn't even use Myspace or Gaia because my PC would struggle to load each page. 4chan worked, but it's not like I feel proud of spending all of my high school years on /b/ and smaller chans' /i/nvasion boards. It just gave me a hateful mentality that made me even more unlikable than I already was. I feel like the person I am today is a result of having missed out on so much growing up, and so the reason why I want to make up for what I missed is because it would have made me into someone far better. Someone who made use of the potential they had, instead of letting it waste away.

>>30889 The heatwave here (Europe) was a real killer the last 2 weeks. I had to install new workplaces in non-ventilated buildings. I had so much sweat on my back the entire time, eugh. .. Luckily I want to lose some weight, so i'll just count it as exercise.

Didn't there use to be an anime board on here? What happened to it?

>>31071 I clearly remember a /w/ - weeb back in 2016/17... or am I starting to lose it?
Sipho Nkosi · 2020-09-14 13:03
>>31299 I dont think there was a /w/ but I thought there was a /jap/ or something like that back then for all the weebshit... maybe it was an /a/ board... Its been too long, that was before the site got reset too... Oh well

>>31299 I played around on the archive and we did have a /w/ board, I didn't see any threads but it was there https://web.archive.org/web/20150531164625/https://lainchan.org/
