My Friends Eventually Disappear...

Hiro Protagonist · 2020-08-11 23:39
Everyone I was ever close to in high school have all parted ways. The 4 close friends I had all stopped hanging out after two of them married. My recent friends from past college classes have not talked to me nor replied to my texts or messages. And now, of the last few people I'm anything close to, one will soon be leaving the gas station she works at and I will not be seeing her anymore. I frequent this gas station a lot, and have come to personally know the 3 workers inside, and now one will move on and, like everyone else I have known, will disappear. Its only a matter of time before the other two workers eventually move on as well. None of my previous coworkers stay in touch, and I suspect the current coworkers I have will eventually part ways and do the same. Eventually. My parents, my sister, and my grandparents are the only ones that have stayed with me and kept touch. When my grandparents die, my sister moves away to college, all I will have then will be my parents. If I ever move out though, I know I will likely never see my parents again. Internet culture is no different. Anyone users I become friends with on various forums or IRC channels eventually disappear. We live in an age of Facebook and messaging, yet I feel like the only person on a deserted island. An island full of npcs and no story mode.

>>30588 I'm just a "normal person", right? I don't belong on a chan board site, amirite? Good God, I don't know why the hell I even came here for.

I think you're expecting too much of people you have very weak connections with. >I frequent this gas station a lot That doesn't make them your friends.

>>30589 should have posted in the LET IT ALL OUT THREAD. Moving on is part of living and growing. Life is not a stagnant pool or a painting. I have a suspicion that you are under 25, and the concept of loss has crept into your mind. The only way to overcome this is to harden yourself against attachment. Religions do a great deal of discussion about this, but in literature, there are a number of examples of embracing the emotion related to attachment despite the pain it creates. These are all decisions you need to make, but never whine about it. Pull yourself together and move on with your life. If I let every attachment I have had hurt me, I would be an insane mental patient. I doubt that anyone except my mother and brother and the 3 people I work with even know I exist anymore. I have moved so many times that every time I say goodbye, I might as well never see or hear from them ever again. Prior to social media, people wrote letters. You could try that...

>>30587 "npcs" are mostly liars that know the truth, but prefer to keep it to themselves and deceive others. they like sticking to the big deceptions and it's easier to just spew the tv's lies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHlmncILfMY

>>30587 I feel I have adapted to this situation. Keeping in touch is really easy, just send something funny to people once in a while and ask how's it going. It's not possible to get a negative reaction this way, I'm always happy to hear from an old friend, and so are other people. Once or twice a year seems to be enough. If they don't reply - it's ok, just do it later. Back in the day we had to live together and be in stay in contact for survival, but now, when survival is not an issue, the society of loosely-connected highly-developed individuals makes more sense. Clingy people who have no developed lives of their own are kind of sad and live in overly complex highly-interconnected worlds of never-ending social network drama. It seems to me that it's hard to stay in the middle today, unless life forces you to be together with people for long periods of time - like, working on a job that requires a lot of teamwork and becoming friends with your coworkers, there won't be this traditional "hanging out", you'll eventually end up either in your/mine situation again or would be stuck in the over-socialized high school drama cesspool with parties. >>30589 Kind of, you essentially wrote a blog post. Your identity, sisters and gas station encounters are not really interesting or matter when you're anonymous. Replace 4 close friends with 6 best friends, sister with brother, grandparents with dogs, gas station with a mall - does anything change? Or is it all noise? Can your post be generated with GPT-3? If you want to vent - you're always welcome in the vent thread.

>>30589 Naw, just grow a bit more of a thick skin and ignore the ding-dongs. Nobody "belongs" here. You are here if you choose to be. Contemporary culture, including much of internet culture, has just become extremely anti-confrontational and people seem to find it almost intolerable to be disagreed with or even merely disliked. Some people won't like you. It's fine. What you are seeing is simply the fact that a lot of imageboard sites structurally have less chance of forming filter bubbles. You'll meet more people who disagree with you, no matter who you are or where you belong.

>>30596 This, I sometimes feel guilty for being mean to people while answering their questions in a overaggressive and confrontational fashion despite the fact that the tone has no reason to be, but that is part of the fun- If anon asks for a thing, you give him that thing but in a way that seems offputting and in a disagreeing tone even if you are absolutely agreeing with him. I used to do this on other chans, but I only do it to lains who are particularly whiny.

>>30587 This really is the problem of our age. This happens to so many people including myself to a certain extent. The skill of maintaining social connections certainly isn't taught in schools, and many people don't even realize it exists. The thing is though -- individuals can't really be blamed for everything here -- in an actual non-sick society, not everyone has to be some skillful social wizard to have a role in society and some meaningful relationships. Socially, this is analogous to the "everybody should have +1SD IQ and learn to code in order to earn any living at all" theory of economics. Basically, we live a sick society where people don't look out for each other and everything is commoditized; where so many people have to work so hard to survive and move around so much they don't have (or think they don't have) the time to talk to anyone. Where demonic black botnet rectangles strip-mine the human social instinct for ad dollars. I don't know what to advise. You can just send memes or whatever to people you think they might like even if you don't know what to talk to them about. You don't have to stop talking to your sister when she moves away to college. Maybe you can even help stop her from getting into bad stuff by being a friend. >>30591 I feel for you but this is cope honestly, and also factually incorrect in the case of Christianity, which definitely does not teach you to "harden yourself against attachment" to other people.

>>30631 >I feel for you but this is cope honestly, and also factually incorrect in the case of Christianity, which definitely does not teach you to "harden yourself against attachment" to other people. I might need to clarify, I was thinking specifically of eastern religions which usually teach that attachment creates sadness (through loss) or something like that. In some texts I have read, there is a difference between caring for and being fond of others. Devout Christians I have met usually use "Jesus is my friend" as a cope. While I have my own opinions of religion, I am not going to talk about them in this thread.

>>30587 Yeah, I know these feels. I have 3 best mates I hang out with weekly. I get the feeling we'll naturally drift apart like most older adults seem to once all of us are working full-time and once they start getting married. It seems like sometimes the only way to have friends as an adult is to take a spouse who isn't crazy, keep in close contact with family and maybe have kids. Hopefully I'm wrong and I can maintain the relationship since we've all been mates for nearly 7 years now. But I guess time will tell. Because either way, I'm practicing gratitude so I'll just try enjoy every minute while I have them.

>>30587 i have been there you need friends that you do adult things (adult games), like coding or tax evasion or marry her sister and he marries yours

what the hell is with all these whiny self-absorbed posts recently? no one cares, go learn some philosophy or theology if you need mental clarity. this site is about technology and the future and the dystopic world-to-come that is already here.
