What is the most cyberpunk city on Earth? And where within that city is the most cyberpunk area? I want to see if an apartment there is within my budget.
Cowboy · 2020-08-09 23:16
Shenzen. Its not just modern but you got surveillance up the ass. You jaywalk? Instantly deducted from your account. Cameras identify who you are right as it happens. And before you even enter the city china will rate your citizen value and give you a value score A,B,C.

My thought exactly, any major city in China will do. Tokyo also comes to mind as well as Berlin or capital cities of ex-commie countries in Europe (though they might lean more towards low life). Here are some neat pics someone took while they were in Berlin.

Was in berlin way back for a conference. Kinda reminded me of soviet cities somehow although i cant say why. Also as for >30443 they wont fine you for jaywalking in berlin. I think its even legal in germany. Law just says if you get hit its on you and you pay.
Shenzen might be special in the aspect that it was made to rival silicone valley and got gov support to reach said goal. Im not familiar with china but i imagine it might be ahead of other cities due to that.
Tencent is also building its own mini-city for employers only. Gonna be interesting to see if this will turn out to be a complete open field cage

Anarchy implies survival of the fittest. Normal people are not though these days (especially all those political "anarchists" that are just bunch of marxist urbanised clowns larpers). So this is why criminals/mafia/paramilitary always take control.

Bobby Newmark · 2020-08-10 02:47

Nope. If you want anrachy to work as a system you need first to educate people (aka force them to act as good anarchists citizens). If they refuse it's ok to purge the bad elements. It's always matter of force and confrontation.
Anarchy is just a metaphysical concept.
Or go for anarco individualism.

look for a place with strong hacker/maker scene. Having a city where people make things happen is better than a cool scenery that doesnt do soykaf.
For that Berlin would be actually a solid choice but i would look in your own country first. Outside of that riding on the first point rumania has a city known to host an excessive density of hackers but it doesnt look cyb at all. Its just the consequence of poor soykafhole with extremely low pay leading to hacking as a way out to earn a living.

What do you mean by that cameras give you a citizen value?
Frank Garza · 2020-10-03 11:31
>>33191
Those where 2 separate points. One is about the jaywalking with the cameras. Since everything is linked they instantly identify your face and by that your bank account so they can instantly deduct the jaywalking fee. You can literally check your bank account at the other side of the road and see the deduction.
The second one was about how they score you on a chart when you wish to enter the country. You get something like a school grade based on your wealth, health, education, etc. If you're high value they give privileges like lower taxes and more rights. I think branding you with a meat quality rating at entry is way more cyb than western everyones equal.

They have a official website where you put in your values and they show your score and the consequences of it. I considered going china several years ago and tried it myself then. Gotta dig though cause i don't remember how the system is even called since i forgot about it after it was clear i wouldnt go. Look for expats in china and you should find it, the system isn't long standing, was implemented maybe 5 years ago and widely discussed back then among expats who got it retro-active applied as they were already living inside.

Cyberpunk is less about the shining salaryman city, and more about the slums adjacent to it. Consequently, budget is not really an issue if you want true cyberpunk. If Necromancer was written today Chiba city would be set in China. Big cities in southeast Asia (Bangkok, Makati) and eastern Europe (Moscow) fit the bill too. I imagine Africa (Lagos? Kinshasa?) but I've never been.

Cause Ive been there and it felt dirty compared to Hong Kong, also many in HK speak English. You can get ripped off more easily buying cheap tech Shenzen. They flashed the drive of something I bought to make it look bigger than it was, when I formatted it it was only 256mb instead of the 8gig it showed. The tech markets in HK are nicer. I'd go Hong Kong and see if you like Shenzen more. Oh and dont let any glamorous ladies try and turn you into a drug mule, I think that nearly happened to me.

China is an unusual country, they have effectively stratified their country through provinces and focuses that can be observed via the unofficial city tier system. Some of the provinces are far from stable (mainly in the west of china) and others aren't prosperous but there are regions and cities of China that are absolutely stable and prosperous. If you're in a tier 1 city then the city will be stable and economically prosperous even if you do have a poverty stricken underbelly.

I'm a different person to the person that you originally replied to, I don't like what China has become and hope that the rest of the world does not follow it as it sounds like it is developing into a true authoritarian nightmare. I just disagreed with the claim that it wasn't stable and prosperous. China's issues do not lie with its stability or its prosperity.

I would say that Brazil's biggest metropolitan areas (Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte and São Paulo) are the biggest candidates.
Brazil is a country of contrast, but nothing sums up as well as its major cities. Low life, high tech is a reality for the part of the population whom can have smartphone but live in some places that are not very nice.

Same continent but different city. I used to live in Lima up until the mid 2000's. A recurring image from there was the business district skyline clashing with the pitch blackness of my area. Workshops clocked out at sundown and blackouts weren't uncommon so the neighborhood got pretty dark at night. Though if you got on any rooftop you could see neon buildings and highways cutting into the horizon. The future is in the distance and then you go back to your Cold War hovel.
In hindsight that was pretty cyberpunk. The spread of smartphones, and even more net booths makes the contrast even sharper when your neighborhood has no A/C and half the buildings are unfinished. Or that one time we had earthquake drills conducted with drone supervision.
The fact it's even cloudier than London in the winter adds to the mood. Pic related.

Streets empty. I think part of it is the Japanese culture, they don't like to stay out late and even soykaf closes at 1500, there's no night markets, people find it rude if you eat outside so you have to shut-in in some overpriced restaurant.

I've been to Lagos and though I doubt I know about everything the city has to offer it certainly does tick some boxes:
> huge devide between rich and poor
> militarised police
> corrupt government and civic institutions
> Shanty towns
Maybe if i did some research I could come up with more, or less idk.
also, I think the biggest noncyberpunk thing about lagos would probably be the lack of tech. I assume both personal tech like smart phones and laptops, as well as stuff like cameras that track faces, aren't as ubiquitous as in say China.
