End of Internet Archive

Cowboy · 2020-06-26 16:59
Four of the nation's leading book publishers have sued the Internet Archive, the online library best known for maintaining the Internet Wayback Machine. The complaint attacks the concept of any library owning and lending digital books, challenging the very idea of what a library is in the digital world. https://blog.archive.org/2020/06/10/temporary-national-emergency-library-to-close-2-weeks-early-returning-to-traditional-controlled-digital-lending/ https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2020/06/publishers-sue-internet-archive-over-massive-digital-lending-program/ The internet Archive was one of the last good thing about the internet & its about to end, this is not about publishers & their shekels or Copyright laws, this is about total control of information. What are the alternatives to Archive.org? I know of Library genesis & b-ok.org but they have a limited selection of books & they do not provide the many of the options like J2P files, high quality Raw...etc that archive.org provides What happens now ? is hosting a public library via IPFS a solution? Torrents? What are your opinions ?

Same soykaf as before, relocate to a free country.
The Oracle · 2020-06-26 17:05
>What are the alternatives to Archive.org? Supporting free alternatives, making free content and starving proprietary publishers to death. Alternatively you can go to a library or end copyright laws. >>28281 >Same soykaf as before, relocate to a free country. Or Russian servers, lol.
Bob Arctor · 2020-06-26 17:13
>>28281 https://www.wired.com/story/russia-internet-disconnect-what-happens/ Russian servers not a good long term solution as they have plans to disconnect from the global Internet & to build a fully autonomous internet Internet might be balkanized in the future & all countries might do this
Anamika · 2020-06-26 18:08
>>28280 not just that, moving all that data to another server wouldn't be easy.
Arisu Mizuki · 2020-06-26 18:27
>>28283 >Internet might be balkanized We already have some segregation through dns blacklists and sites geo-ip based blocking you from server-side. Completely sufficient to keep normal users away. Interesting in that scope is also that some news sites dont even admit that youre blocked because of your country origin and just claim the article doesnt exist until you use a proxy.

>>28282 >Supporting free alternatives, making free content and starving proprietary publishers to death. Keep pirating everything, that's gonna work out fine
Project 2501 · 2020-06-27 11:55
>>28321 >Keep pirating everything, that's gonna work out fine Is that irony? It's hard to tell at this point.
Miho Iwakura · 2020-06-27 17:04
>>28321 >Keep pirating Yes but there has to be content to pirate, Archive.org provided content that was not found any where else on the internet & most piracy sites for books do not have the variety that archive.org had. There is also another issue with piracy, the quality of scans is bad & they do not provide many different formats, many of them offer poorly digitized versions produced by google.Do you know of any good private trackers or sites for book piracy other than the ones already mentioned?

>>28280 Why can't Internet Archive just dump all their files to libgen (dot) is for safekeeping/preservation in case IA gets v&?
fsociety · 2020-06-27 22:05
>>28347 Does libgen even have the server capacity to host everything from the internet archive? I recall watching one of IA's videos and their storage space is insane.
Special Agent Bob · 2020-06-27 22:12
What? This is terrible. Archive is the only way to easily make dead links usable.
Armitage · 2020-06-27 22:18
Is it really about to end? I know they messed up but doesn't look like impending doom for some reason. The publishers don't really win anything closing the whole thing anyway.

>>28280 How much space would I need to save a local copy?
Spooky · 2020-06-28 01:29
>>28356 And this is why you look for other benefits. Im with op its most likely about information control. The biggest thing i see here is that archieve catches editing in articles. You can track news & wikipedia changing their spin on topics. My guess is they want the automatic evidence collector gone.

Open link file in adobe digital editions ,it will download the file 3.once the file is open In adobe digital editions, go to file, then click show in explorer & you get the encrypted PDF/EPUB 4.get some eBook DRM Removal software I used the one from the link below , it might have viruses I didn't check : ) https://karanpc.com/ebook-drm-removal-bundle-4-16-703-379-portable/ 5: get DRM free file Note: Sometimes after you login in to archive.org to get the link to download PDF/ EPUB . The link disappears when the page has fully loaded (might be due to the recent Lawsuit ) refresh the page and quickly click on the download link worked for me I downloaded the first link as an example you can do the others >>28439 According to the article the computer servers cost :" $60k machines are made up of 10 computers a piece, with 36 8-terabyte drives." Crazy Jake · 2020-06-29 15:22
>>28439 Instead of getting the full 40 PB, we should make a list of stuff that won't be easily found elsewhere, maybe a couple terabytes worth of stuff, and host on IPFS or something like that

It's not the end of Internet Archive. Publishers are only seeking claims for 127 books, making it only a couple million that they would have to pay
