How do you generally view other people?

Batou · 2020-05-28 11:56
I view them as some kind of fuarrrrking parasitic, mean things that, if you throw in enough attention, gifts and praises, will just leave you alone. So far I've seen very few exceptions to this.
Mitnick · 2020-05-28 12:03
Generally, untrusting. I have my doubts until trust is granted. But if they do something that removes that trust, no give backs.
Shogun · 2020-05-28 12:13
>>26692 Agreed, Lain. I do my best to stay away from most people and if trust is given, it is a one-way road. From experience it is incredibly true, giving someone another chance is a huge mistake that will ultimately be your own fault for letting it happen again.

I can be nerdy af (which is more me to be honest) when that's the group i'm in, but I can turn that way down and become too kool 4 skool if that's the situation I'm in. I pride myself on my ability to sniff out a person's moral character. I think most people are just ok, true assholes and true good people are uncommon. Most people don't have any real hate in them, and most people don't really love others selflessly. Most people act the way they do in order to fit in and feel good. They can't really be individually blamed if "fitting in" means being mean, they are just going with the group. Maybe they can be called a coward then but that's different from being a truly terrible person. The hardest part of dealing with people is that I don't really know how to act 'normal'. I can do a good approximation sometimes but it is exhausting. It makes any kind of work environment a living hell. I know I'm a little bit narcissistic, thinking I'm better than others, and I try to suppress that part of myself. >>26761 biggest annoyance I have with most people. They expect others to "pick up on things" or assume things they really shouldn't. Sync · 2020-05-29 22:20
When approaching other people, I generally tend to believe that they are benevolent. This somehow mostly changes, when I spend time with them. There is this kind of superficial character trait, that I used to very much dislike; and somehow it is seemingly part of so many people. But on the other hand i felt like a hypocrite, judging those people, as judging them somehow makes myself this superficial. What gives me the right to hate them? Maybe those people are, as they are, because they have to be, what they are? Maybe people are just deterministic like that. Therefore i stopped bothering and accepted people as they are. Which led me to stop trying to change people, but rather collect the people I like and let go of those i dont want to be with.

I trust people as default. I have no gain from distrusting people other than clogging up my brain with variables. Most people will do you no harm unless they feel attacked, and even if I suffer harm attempts, I'm confident that I can deal with the inconvenience. What are they gonna do, say mean things? Spread gossip? None of that affects me. People may have reasons to lie, but it doesn't matter. Think about it: what do they gain from lying? Most of the time, it's ego preservation to escape judgement. However, what I think of other people is not important to anyone but me. If someone wishes to lie, they do so in their own detriment, as there is nothing more important than sincerity in this world.

>>26779 I'm in very much the same camp as you, lain. I used to be quite the bothersome person when I started college, but by the end of it all, with the help of a wonderful community and great friends, I found that I loved other people in spite of my distance from them. By and large, I want nothing but the best for them. I will offer this advice, though. Sooner or later, you'll run into someone you -want- to like you, but notices you'll always play nice if they throw you a compliment, or invite you to hang once in a while, etc. This is especially insidious with close family, as instinct tells us that family belongs together. But don't fall for their honeyed words. Cut them out as soon as you can. I'll confess however, I do have my own quirks... After having endured constant abuse, pain, illness, and ultimately permanent injury and psychological damage over the past ten years, I've come to realize there exist people whose fate is to watch other people succeed and live happy lives. I'll do whatever I can to support them, but I doubt anyone could put up with me. I'm content with being an observer, separate from society, where my internet friends and my racing thoughts can keep me company in solitude. Does any lain feel the same?

Very interested in people, their personal lives, motivations, feelings, stories. I hate it because I have the general feeling that everyone looks at others the same way, when rationally I know that to be false. It creates a lot of anxiety and I feel that everyone is always looking at me and thinking of me the same way. It also gets me taken advantage of a lot, and hurt. I've toughened to it, and I spend most of my time alone now. I am able to concentrate on career centric goals (technical things), literature, and religious texts. I notice and recognize everyone in a room when I'm there, and get uncomfortable thinking that there is much attention on me. I'm quite good at talking with others one on one, and I can connect with people quite easily. I think its possible to understand people, their emotions, goals. When I was younger I had a very intimate and sexual relationship with my girlfriend of 2 years. This way of being was great for that, but the relationship ended with lots of negative emotions. In groups on the other hand, things get weird very fast, especially when I'm around multiple people who I'm close with. There's too much to keep track of. Humor and jokes, communal laughter is a good fuse for this, but it can get out of control and I'm prone to buffoonery. From Thus Spake Zarathustra, towards the beginning Zarathustra answered: “I love mankind.” “Why,” said the saint, “did I go into the forest and the desert? Was it not because I loved men far too well?" The dialogue with the saint in the forest who still believes in God.

I don't really think. It's like auto-pilot. Generally act nice, make jokes where it's appropriate. I keep a note of those who are nice and those who i don't want to get too close with. But other than that i don't really form an opinion about them. I don't even "think" when i'm with people. But i act like how i would want people to act towards me.

A difficult topic. Peoples are walking mugs of soykaf. That's it. All I want to do is to sit in a sensory deprivation chamber until I die. The less humans there are around - the better. They are just stupid. I've been working for isps, and seen how stupid peaples are with basic tech. I've been working in heavy industries and seen, how non-chalant pooples are when handling a potentially killing machine. Even after deadly accidents. I've been working in hospitality, and seen how many pineapples don't even have the most basic fuarrrking common sense and common knowledge. I hate them. They are stupid. They fall for the same traps every fuarrrking time. They can't walk straight on the street, so I have to fuarrrking ''manoeuvre'' around them because I walk faster. They don't understand the difference between hot drinkable chocolate and hot melted, thick chocolate until you show them, like a retarded baby "see, this one is thick, you can't drink it". I have to take a rookie by the arm and push its arm against a hot pipe, so its hand hurts and it understands that you have to move the fuarrrking pipe back in its fuarrrking place when you're finished so nobody could be hurt by accident. You have no fuarrrking idea. And these fuarrrking animals surround us every day. They are your neighbours. ''They drive cars''. Holy soykaf. When I'm on my bike, I'm scared for my pathetic life every fuking second, because these retards can't put down their toddler fecesbook machines for five seconds and I could be run over when waiting for my green at an intersection. Unfortunately, my dad was a patrol police officer, and he took me to his work when I was a kid more than once. The image of a human head erased against the road is forever imprinted in my memory and I can't do anything with this. I could go on. On the other hand, pinecones provide me with many the comforts of civilization. I drink coffee, grown on the opposite side of the planet, I have spare parts for my 40 years old bike, I listen to classic rock in nice quality while cooking asian dishes with supplies delivered to a nearest supermarket to me from all over the world. I can soykaf in the warmth and comfort of my bathroom. I can reach the most unlikely people in the most unlikely of the places with this soykafpost. That's a difficult topic.

>>27477 I definitely am right there with you with regards to the motorcycle troubles and assholes all over the roads. My bike is gonna turn fifty November after next. Gotta throw a little party for the old girl. Got her some new piston rings and I plan to do a full top-end re-seal. Already done a good bit of the bottom end. Been riding since I was maybe twelve or fourteen, depending on if you count riding around on the farm or riding around on public roads. So a good deal more than half of my life span has been spent on top of a bike. I'm lucky to have such a start, it has really ingrained some good instincts. But it's always a risk even for vets like myself. One can never let themselves think they've seen it all and have the perfect technique. I want to move back to a more rural area. Currently in a mid-sized city, but the idiocy of our drivers in particular make it even worse than when I rode in NYC and even Mexico City. Bangkok was my favorite place to ride, though. 60% of the traffic there is on two wheels, even higher if you count non-motorized vehicles. They really do look out, even though it feels chaotic at first. I have never felt more seen and considered on a motorbike than in that insanely huge city, it was surprising to say the least. I've also seen first-hand some gory deaths resulting from crashes. Both the fault of a rider and the fault of somebody else who completely fuсked a rider that was just minding their business and doing almost everything right. But there's always a couple things one could have done better. Cell phones are the worst machines ever made by man. Wish we could take that one back. Damn you, Steve Jobs... if only you got cancer ten or fifteen years earlier! I hope that guy is burning real good in hell.

I think we're just different species of animal. I'm a turboautist. When I was younger I was deeply misanthropic and hated humanity. Kind of saw myself as superior for "seeing through the bullshit" or whatever. A lot of it was projecting, I hated myself for being different and put that onto the people/society who rejected me. The past couple years I've been making peace with it though and I'm getting to a point where I'm like, genuinely content and happy in life. Getting a job working nights helped a lot, I'm no longer forced to be around people/spend all my energy maintaining a normal person mask. I'm happiest alone, genuinely. Even as a child I was happy alone, it was only when I got to middle/high school and started to get that societal message of "if you don't have friends it means you're a BAD PERSON." that it started to bother me. I'm just an alien. It's easier to have love in my heart for people when I accept that I'm not and won't ever be "one of them". sorry for the effortpost

I always assume that people are malevolent, selfish, and/or completely incompetent until directly proven otherwise, and mentally prepare accordingly. I know that it's unhealthy, but I cannot convince myself of anything else. I have met so many people that act like those things that it colored my perspective of humans as individuals.
The Fin · 2020-06-13 07:54
Crazy reading this thread but not judging as I used to be in the same boat. I like people, but I filter out a good chunk of them into the background. Like some of you most people I feel as if we are different species of animals. The other day for example I had a great convo with a food truck vendor about Islam and video games, but in my head I was just like its funny I could never be friends with this man. He approaches me with this archetype in mind of I am another man, and I am not contained within that mold and would certainly say something that would weird him out, or even make him angry. But all in all the people I do see, I think well of them. And as a result the people I dont see I think well of too. I assume that even awful people, people id want to kill, believe themselves to not be doing wrong. Even a pedophile or murderer has many justifications or maybe a level of ignorance that allows them to believe what they are doing is fine. You could say I believe all humans do what they think is right, but what they think is right can be incredibly warped or conflict in such an extreme way with what I do that id wish them dead. That in itself too many would seem like the wrong thing. But I used to be as untrusting of people as you guys, and its not that I dont know what you know. During my progression to how I view people now id been wronged, dissapointed, betrayed etc. worse than when I had that mindset of everyone else is against me, evil, parasitic w/e you will. However I also had as much good interactions, and I learned that because I am depressed the negative ones way heavier on my mind. so I learned not to dwell, and be some dramatic everyone is out to hurt me. Ive been hurt less since then not more, its very hard to hurt me these days. My partner could leave me tommorow and I wouldnt feel betrayed or like il never love again, il just be very sad and reflect on what went wrong so I can try to avoid it next time. Id definitely dwell a bit, I havent transformed into some perfect being, but I would dwell less than I used to on pettier things such as a friend saying something bad behind my back.

Today I deleted WhatsApp after one last weak attempt at returning to normal society. I simply can't talk to people anymore. I say very tired, boring things to stay safe or I go on long-winded rants that nobody wants to hear. If there's anything at stake I feel paralyzed by fear or I fail to live up to these people who matter. If there's nothing at stake I simply don't care. Either way it's alienating for both me and the person I'm dealing with, so I'll just turn the page and accept that I'm going to live on the outskirts of society until the day I hit the bucket.

The few who aren't are either powerless mentally ill from the stress of growing up in a world like this or are some of the ultra-wealthy individuals who realize that all this politics are peasant soykaf and are running the world into the ground out of their own (honestly, rational) self-interest. I'm trying to at least get into the latter group by association, because my life's work is to aid in the creation of a godlike AI with absolute power over society. >>27907 >>27929 History was forgotten, big industry manipulated society, consumer culture polluted the minds and told everyone they can be beautiful no matter how dumb or unhealthy they might be. Education used to be a deciding factor in how far one would go. Now information is everywhere, there is no need to learn or grow. Successful people I used to know would say the way the succeeded was by promising themselves they would not fail and fall into poverty or the lower class by working and learning until nobody could stop them, on a farm or in the city the only thing that could save them from the mundane suffering was to get better mentally and physically. The only people I have met with this attitude now are immigrants who escaped terrible fates and have more pride in their citizenship than people who were born with citizenship, especially those who are several generations removed and act like immigrants are peasants not deserving of opportunity that their grandparents had. Children now are unneeded pets kept by people who can neither afford them or raise them properly in conjunction with their addictions to consumerist technologies. If I had to categorize what modern humanity has become, I would say nothing more than cogs in a machine, one that makes profit by turning everyone into consumer slaves while those who speculate on profit by "investing" make money off of outsourced third world labor or by selling out everyone's privacy. People are playing the stock market on speculation alone and making 30-60% return on investment a week, but there is no such thing as infinite expansion in any market, and markets are fragile, people are buying real estate if they can afford it and renting it at absurd prices or holding to sell, "success" in modern economies are measured based on the top few companies and not society as a whole, everyone except the top 1% are living paycheck to paycheck and their households are on the verge of collapse. The only thing this period of relative peace and artificial financial stability have given us are naive full grown children just waiting on the next pacifier. I feel like talking with others is like trying to explain Latin to a 5 year old. Try talking to other people IRL, and its all idle talk, nobody has goals except to get a sexual/life partner and make money. I used to think I was different from everyone, now I think I'm probably very average and most people think the same things as me. I'm pretty optimistic, I think people want to be good on average. I don't think they are good on average, but that's because it's really difficult to understand how your actions and words will effect others. I think the average person wants to avoid hurting other people because it makes them uncomfortable to be around negative emotions and wants to help other people for the opposite reason (except >>26764 kek). I do think that the internet removes seeing the reaction and is kind of removing the enforcement of "be nice because being mean makes you both uncomfortable", and along with that I think people are far less accepting of opposing viewpoints because of the echo chamber effect of being on the internet. I think people are a little too polarized right now and it kind of breaks down that identification with others that I think is necessary for people to want to make things better for everyone, but I'm sure people have always been polarized by bigger institutions and I just try to be hopeful that in my lifetime I'll see a period where people "wake up" and work towards compromise and identification with every person. I try to surround myself with easy-going people who make me happy. The people you spend your days with IRL will have the most effect on you and your thoughts. I go to chans for my more weird thoughts and to expose myself to other viewpoints, but that's about the only interacting I do online. Just no goals whatsoever except to limply move with the tide and fiddle around with digital simulacra of sex and productivity. Honestly I'd say that if they did have those simple goals you mentioned, they would be fine. I think sex/companionship and wealth have been the primary goals of humans since ancient times, with only the very few self-possessed and brilliant eccentrics having aspirations beyond that. Those people move history, but they are few. But now people don't have anything. We're all in that experiment where scientists wired up a rat to a pair of buttons that could either give them food or release dopamine in their brains via direct electrostimulation, and like every single rat they studied we're choosing to push the dopamine button over and over again until we starve. We've accidentally invented technologies that ravenously ensnare and destroy us, and we can't manage to unmake them. We don't even want to. I feel like the great filter is a one-two knockout punch involving both this and climate change right on its heels. It certainly guarantees we'll never do anything about any problem ever again. Humankind was once the most resourceful thing in the universe, with no problem insurmountable to him. Now we are helpless and can't manage to overcome anything, because we've invented this trap and put our brains inside of it. We're doomed. >>28257 Simply, those traits are what our socioeconomic system propagates and incentivizes. It's not surprising when you think about the underlying values of the social and economic system, literally relying on consumption in order to survive. Look at what COVID-19 and a few weeks of having to live on only essentials did to the economy. Our economy can't survive when people don't constantly consume, therefore the populace is fed from an early age the importance of material goods and wealth signalling, which inherently leads to neuroses and, eventually, collapse. What we need to think about is where to go from here. And no, I don't mean communism. >>28153 >>28572 With this peaceful, first world era of humanity, there is absolutely no collective purpose for people aside from participating in capitalism to attain satisfying vices. Back then, people had a purpose to physically and ideologically protect their nation, a place that united people positively (depending on how you look at it). Currently however,I find that people pledge their allegiance to the companies rather than to the state. This is not inherently bad, but the fact that the companies only attract and "benefit" people if money is attached. The market that everyone participates in is amoral unlike the previous world wars where it was a battle of ideologies and morals. Capitalism is a necessary evil if we want to maintain our era of relative peace; nations and people dont want to war because of the capitalistic net positives attached. China and usa have opposite ideologies but love money, but "terrorists" dont really care about money as much, which prompts some soykaf war. Aside from this ramble, I found that these two posts illustrate the issues of missing a general goal relating to the development of humanity (space development) or in a nation (conquering land for the betterment of the motherland). Even if there is a general net positive goal to work against climate change, why should people throw away their accustomed selfish habits, facilitated with capitalism, to actually benefit the world? Which one is more beneficial: Suffering associated with a defined collective purpose like in the world wars ? or a reality where there is no suffering and the ease of living is at the highest its ever been?
Nobody important · 2020-07-19 08:25
>>29368 >Capitalism is a necessary evil if we want to maintain our era of relative peace; nations and people dont want to war because of the capitalistic net positives attached. huh??? The US has been at constant war for over 20 years, due partly to a bloated military-industrial complex that keeps half the economy afloat. Thus has directly caused a massive refugee crisis and social strife. It is true that a lot of people have largely lost any sense of purpose in their lives, or never had any in the first place. But I think nationalism is part of what got us into this mess in the first place. National identity is a poor substitute for cultural/tribal identity, and brand identity is poorer still. But these days national and brand identity(including political brands) are the only ones that society makes available to us. This is firmly cemented in the culture, it has been true for over 2 generations now. It is more advanced in some people than others; some people are only able to define themselves by their job and what products they buy and which politicians or news organizations they prefer. It's a very severe brain disease and such people are incapable of reason. It's a spectrum, I think most people still aren't that advanced and it can be recovered from in some cases. But overall it is a societal disease and, along with the various horrors which we have created(climate change, mass extinction, etc.) it will be the death of us. People throw around the word "tribalism" a lot to refer to things that are not actually tribal. Your tribe is a couple thousand people, at most. Or it would be if there was any coherent notion of identity or having "your people" these days. Now instead everybody is other. The only solace we have are in "friend groups"(I hate that phrase, it's called a social circle god damn it), or in these stupid boxes which connect us to faceless randos, but where we can express ourselves and imagine we are free and among our people. A tribe made of people who we will never meet. It feels really sad to be honest. Anyway, to the topic of the thread: people are alright but hard to communicate with. I often find it very hard to make or interpret nonverbal cues, people misinterpret me all the time or I misinterpret them. Sometimes people treat me "special" because they think I'm autistic. And maybe I am. In adulthood I've gotten a lot better at being sociable though. I like being sociable sometimes.

Inherently animal: Curious, driven partially by instinct, but intelligent enough to defy their nature. Potentially good, nearly angelic if taught to be, but also easily corruptible. I'm not a cynic who will try to convince you that everyone is terrible. All actions have purpose, even if we don't know what it is, and terrible actions are often motivated by terrible circumstances. All things consume their own tails, the goal of life being perpetuation, and so while hatred begets hatred, kindness as well begets kindness. We are products of our circumstances. And yet, we also have the ability to contradict them. While the damage dealt to some people may be irreparable, their transience is a blessing in that regards. We must simply not make the same mistakes in the future, and teach others not to. That is how I view other people.
Cypher · 2020-07-19 23:07
>>29369 This is an era of "relative peace". Any other period in history is brimming of suffering and warring nations/tribes. Through these last two generations of a capitalistic purpose, we have arrived to this uneasy yet peaceful state. I guess that is my issue with the relevance of capitalism at a world stage: it's amoral. Nations dont war unless there is a net gain for their economy. A war in the middle east is of course benefiting the military industry complex, while wars with the east is detrimental to this spoonfed supply of capitalistic happiness for the general people. I call myself a social libertarian at heart ,but this lack of unhindered collective purpose is bugging me every single day in this boring dystopian pandemic. >National identity is a poor substitute for cultural/tribal identity, and brand identity is poorer still. But these days national and brand identity(including political brands) are the only ones that society makes available to us. Well said. I personally fuarrrking hate the way that this country aligns itself with group/tribal identities consisting of the parties fueled by money and media exposure, and social media ideology groups which are forwarded by companies. I wish that people would practice healthy critical thinking as it is my fuarrrking lifelong dream, but after exposing myself to many world views irl and online, it is ultimately futile to bring this critically free ideal to others and to implement it into the way that our majority voted government works. From that, I think that a homogeneous national identity is ideal, with an issue being that it is fueled by war. It has worked for every generation in history except when taking into account the last two. This old way of nationalism might have a lower quality of life associated and a groupthink mentality associated, but it would be a lot better than this illusion of choice that we currently have. Maybe the future holds a collective enemy of humanity whether it be climate change or the singularity...

I feel a mixture of indifference and disappointment. The more time goes on, the more I start to believe that I don't want anything to do with people in general. I dislike the unpredictable behavior of their minds yet I enjoy creativity in those who I trust, so I feel stuck in limbo where most people are either too stone-cold logical thinking or are way too emotional for my own well-being. On top of that, almost all of them are consumers. Nobody really fits what I'm looking for, and it makes me wonder who i'm actually looking for. In a way, it's okay. The diversity of human consciousness is exciting and is enough for me to stay on earth, despite the "bad" things happening in this reality. In fact, I feel deattached enough to the real world that the bad things just feels like another event happening in the human timeline. People come and go, they accomplish amazing feats or henious crimes, and yet the earth keeps revolving. But even this passive worldview can make people want to murder you, so I prefer sticking to my own, created worlds. People here often rly socialise more deeply when drunk, this makes proper behaviour more difficult. Due to me being not strongwilled enough to differenciate myself above others, I like people as a whole. Our sheming nature where we raise fassades, lie constantly to smoothen down potential squabbles that dont benefit you, align to unspoken pecking orders that are maintained either by well meaning extroverts, a social tyrant or angsty backtalkimg middle types is bothersome but still leaves you with many options for goodness that break with purely utilitarian behaviour. I found out people at the top of social hierachies know much more about how people act then they will admit at first. They will have a larger Idea about you then you think is possible as an introvert. Friends you can love as they are and truly feel secure with are very rare for them you can shine as you are. But if you have no sense of judgement whatsoever, you're a rube. It would mean you don't discern about anything... if you went too far. But I think I know what you mean and it's good to not be overly judgemental for sure

>>30125 Trusting and being betrayed is better than the fate you've inflicted upon yourself. Have you examined why betrayal makes you so fearful? Is it really because it harms you in a material way, to the point it's not a worthwhile tradeoff to have any relationships with others at all? Or is it something internal? Is it a phobia of some kind? Because I know I'm going to have my trust broken. Every single time. I expect it fully from the start, but I do it anyway. And it's fine. I'm still glad I chose to take the leap once it's said and done. I've had a lot of good experiences and I haven't ever been hurt so badly that I couldn't recover. Of course you can go too far with trusting people, but I'd spend some time figuring out if betrayal is truly what you think it is. Just my two cents.

>>31406 I guess that's a pretty good way of looking at it. I have a hard time with that sort of thinking since I'm a pretty cynical person to begin with, but I generally tend to agree that moving on from your problems is the best thing to do. That being said, I wish more people would try to do that instead of wallowing in self pity, makes it seem like just fishing for sympathy is the easier play and more rewarding immediately. But even that I've tried, and it just doesn't lead to lasting happiness.

The people who annoy me most are shallow or stupid, "normal people" whose existence does nothing but lend resources and influence to the charismatic and avaricious Second-to-most annoying are """introverts""" who identify with their refusal and resulting inability to socialize effectively; if their existence has a spark, they're wilfully hiding it under a bushel I nearly agree with >>27291, in that I derive most of my perspective on humanity from introspection+refinement on initial disgust-response data, but I diverge significantly in that: 1. every day I look in the mirror and see that person and know I must make the world slightly more worthy of their presence 2. I am acutely aware that generalizing your disgust at most-of-what-people-do to anti-humanism proper is self-defeating (unless you're actually going to fuarrrking commit to e.g. causing the extinction of the entire human race). half-genocides and anti-Eluanism only select humans to be scrappier and grosser, which is counterproductive if your alleged motivation was disgust. either bring about the utopia, or void, but don't amplify the unholy force that is natural selection. >>29226 >isn't it odd that virtually no one knows how computers work? ehh, no—it's a specialized engineering field. It's not beyond mortal ken; anyone with STEM aptitude could learn them to the core if they committed a decade to doing so. https://www.bunniestudios.com/blog/?cat=28

>>31412 I personally don't believe there's such a thing as "lasting" happiness, and I feel like my life has been better for accepting that. It's a thing that comes and goes; something you do, not something you are. I relate to the cynicism for sure—sorry you're going through that.

>>31621 I appreciate having someone find my situation relatable, even if it's only somewhat so. I say I'm a cynic, but like anyone else in my position, I'd probably consider myself more a realist than anything else. That being said, I think my outlook has at the very least allowed me to avoid happiness as an end of my efforts in and of itself--in other words, I'm not living to be happy, even if I make decisions that might make me temporarily happy here and there. So, this 'lasting happiness,' whether it truly exists or not, is of no concern to me. Rather, I devote myself to my passion, and all else seems to bend to it properly. Sorry if I've rambled too much about things that aren't really related to anything you've said, but in any case, I appreciate your kind words and general insight.

>>26691 IMO, we're all self-serving. If you really look at the underlying motives for any relationship outside of a healthy parent-child context. There's a benefit for you that directs your actions as a 'friend'. Be that loneliness, boredom, networking, etc. We all want something out of each other, I've never experienced a person who just wants the best for you for that alone - there's always an underlying and often evolutionary motive. Not that this is bad because this mutual-selfishness still has people forming meaningful connections that bring joy. We're not giving each other joy, we're just mutually providing the resources, stimulants or experience the other person wants in hopes that we receive the same back. Thus why people like >>26762 for instance (and all of us) act differently as our environment changes. Because the people with us expect something different from the social transaction. This sounds a lot more edgy and depressing than I meant it to be, but nothing in my experience has proven this to be wrong. The only solution to not getting a little down over it IMO is to just accept you can't change it and then move on. Bless the dichotomy of control lol.
Unspecified · 2020-09-08 04:01
I want to like people more. Mainly because I know that connecting with others is an important part of life, and as someone who has next to no one, I need to build connections. I don't want to be alone, but it feels like that's all I was meant for. Like some important part of me was either missing from birth or taken from me in childhood. But I've never liked anyone, save for a handful of people, that I've come into contact with. The last (maybe even only) time I made friends was in high school. It might just be because 99% of my social interaction comes from my job. And unless you're a true people person, this is the worst way to experience people. Everyone treats you like a machine, and after hearing the same trite "how are you today?"s and "you guys staying busy?"s enough times, they start to come off as mechanical as well.
Pris · 2020-09-08 21:54
>>31743 Altruism exists cause people feel good about helping. You could say its self-serving cause they chase their own happiness but these people help other people for no compensation past their brain self-rewarding them. The mechanism is mirror-neurons, build to predict others behaviour it lets you simulate what the other person might think and so you feel the predicted happiness from receiving your help and thus act upon it when no distinction is made between this predicted happiness for your target and your own happiness.

On one hand I'd like to believe that most of the people I meet in the west are a products of their environment. Which is a civilization so grossly wealthy and decadent that even the poorest people can afford to be fat, hedonistic, and ignorant consumers. I want to believe, that as a result of their decadence, that westerners have a mass scale, undiagnosed "Emperor Nero personality disorder", for lack of a better term. But if this is what happens to the human condition because they have a bit of the good life then fuarrrk this entire species. It's so baffling how myself, my close family members and my internet friends are such a small group of people with any sense it feels like. On the other hand, I realized many moons ago that the greatest failure that people who have been let down by other people experience is the assumption that Man was ever anything more than just an ape and even in moneyless cults and third world countries people are still cunts, potentially more-so.

>>31744 I try to use nonsense to break up the monotony of the machine. This works sometimes... >>31760 >Altruism exists cause people feel good about helping. People feel good about helping because altruism exists, not the other way around (or is it like the chicken/egg thing). Altruism is selfish. There is a social reward triggered by good deeds. Basically this evolved because nobody wants to be around the inverse (the guy who steals everyone food and kills all his competition). Humans are linguistic creatures, and we developed complex communication, along with a number of other sometimes problematic traits. Because humans evolved as pseudo-pack creatures, the collective bears tangible advantages to the individual. Hunting and gathering works better in groups, so working with and for the group became a positive trait. This trait is exploited: Simping/whiteknighting/microfunding and donation sites. There is an argument that spirituality also causes altruism in a selfish manner: >Saints are selfish because they subconsciously put the benefits in the afterlife as a reward for the suffering in this life. Guilt also factors into altruism, but I could discuss this more at length. Altruism does not imo make society necessarily better, and in modern times it makes it worse (facebook sympathy functions the same way as actually helping, but without any of the associated negatives).

>>32060 I somewhat agree with both of you. Altruism itself isn't selfish because it has tangible benefits. But alot of altruistic individuals are selfish, simply because they choose to be altruistic for the singular purpose of reaping said tangible benefits.

You can reduce everything to desire to survive and claim we're selfish, but we're not the only altruistic species at all, there are actual health benefits in helping out others and it's such an important cause we're the dominant species in this planet. As usual with reducing everything just to fit a specific point of view, it brings no insights at all.
Judge Fang · 2020-09-22 01:10
The foundation of everyone is made of selfishness. Hard work does not exist, everyones success is a result of luck and the right circumstances. (Everyone at the end of their life will have "an equal effort spent", some will have had the luck to channel it into the right place)
