The "Normie"

I am growing bored of general 'chan' culture. I am growing more and more displeased with the state of cyber-culture. Chan enthusiasts are too into childish behaviors like playing video games and watching anime. Is being a normal person really so bad? Is having a social circle and romantic interests so awful? Should I really be ashamed I want such things? Am I becoming a normal person? Or is this just growing up and realizing this is all pathetically lame? I question my interests now, and whether or not I really want to pursue them.
Chan Siu Ming · 2020-03-26 01:38
Yeah, the normal person hate is and has always been based on bitterness and envy. normal people have it better in nearly every single way. Some people can't admit that to themselves. If you are able, you should get the hell out immediately. Don't feel guilty; you don't have to give one blood-soaked ѕһіt about the judgement of people around here.
_cr4zyc0d3z · 2020-03-26 01:45
>>23815 I feel, in a way, connected to the people here. We share a common struggle; to be better accepted by society. We as Lainons should try to better ourselves and promote a healthier mental state than what most chan-sites do. We are Lainchan. We are Lainons. We are not 4chan, and we don't have to be so -called /b/tards.
Marly Krushkhova · 2020-03-26 02:04
Get a social circle and a girlfriend. Nobody should feel elitist for abstaining from a social life. Maybe you should wait a until the virus hype dies down though. I think the jaded anime and vidya loser stereotype is a side effect of avoiding social media (a good thing) and not having a job. And if you hang out with normalcattle for long enough you will see where anons are coming from, people are just fuarrrkin stupid sometimes. >>23815 The normalcattle have it easy. It's not a better way of living by all metrics, and a lot of them end up depressed anyway because you can still have a hollow, soulsucking existence on top of a social life.
Jens Hansen · 2020-03-26 02:14
Normal user is just the new buzzword for conformist. Being completely normal in a broken society is vile. That said you can deviate from the norm and be exeptional for the worse as well. You just have to improve yourself and your world and say damn the world they live in I'll make my own. You can be a lot better than normal if you stop limiting yourself. Having friends and a wife and kids is not something bad, having the wrong people in your life is. We are all connected. You can't escape your humanity. We do not thrive in total isolation. Find people who improve at your rate that you can trust.
Chan Siu Ming · 2020-03-26 03:35
At this point the only reason I use imageboards is that I can post quickly, without having to register an account. On every single other metric I can think of imageboards lose badly against anything else. It's not just about a normal person life or cyberculture, it's just everything. I don't hate games or anime and find people passionate about it cool and interesting, but I hardly bother with discussions for those topics on chans. You can easily find better quality or a more welcoming environment in a lot of other places if needed. And I feel others, normal people or not, know this too, and that is why a site like Lainchan is unable to thrive even when everyone is forced to stay at home.
The Phantom Phreak · 2020-03-26 05:32
I've been having similar thoughts lately. All the games and such I used to enjoy, now I get bored after maybe 5 or 10 minutes. I don't even enjoy programming all that much anymore, despite being really into it back in my teens and college years. I mean, this could just be anhedonia or something, but I don't know. I want to meet people and maybe even get into a relationship for once in my life. Only problem is, I'm so socially stunted from my youth that I don't even know where to begin. The only friend I have, I met by chance during my last year of high school. And that was 10 years ago. I avoid social media just because both my friend and I know how addictive and pointless it is. I hang out on a few chats, but there's only really one that I regularly talk in. And even then, I barely contribute anything to existing conversations because I know so little about things that people talk about. Even with my own interests, I don't know enough to make conversation. I don't want to be a normal person in terms of "watches TV/movies, knows about sportsball, gets opinions from pundit #53743", just in terms of social competence and not hating myself. I feel like imageboards have influenced me big time, too. They're useful as a crutch for social anxiety, as I can say what I want without it being associated with an identity of mine, but I've gotten so used to speaking anonymously that I become extremely cautious and hesitant about what I say while under an identity. In that way, I think it's actually made my anxiety worse.
Dujour · 2020-03-26 06:33
It's pretty childish to consider any personal hobby as childish and think that makes you a grownup now. As for the rest well some people just get hurt enough they want to give up on trying on interpersonal relationships or they just have their own personal needs and really don't actually desire some things others do. What is the ideal life is what an individual wants so long as they aren't seriously harming others. The whole us vs them mentality is stupid no matter what side you're on.

>>23821 Childish hobbies are childish. Picking your nose, jerking off to my little pony, playing with tonka trucks, collecting comics, and so on and on and on. Adults have adult hobbies, and they're much more demanding and fulfilling. Would you rather limit your intellectual capacity by reading spiderman for the rest of your pathetic life?
Delilah · 2020-03-26 12:02
I despise cultures of resentment. I despise people who dislike those who are better off than them. This whole loser morality thing is a pathetic, an unhealthy coping mechanism. Yet, I don't think engaging in videogames and anime is childish, and they are not hobbies inherently tied to antisocial people. Hell, I don't even think there's anything wrong with being an introvert, some people really would just rather spend most of their time alone. >>23817 Don't pretend "non-normal" people are not cattle. But yeah, you have a point, most people are uninteresting and can't think for themselves. It is difficult to surround yourself with good friends, and I feel privileged for having good company. >>23818 I agree with the sentiment.
Drifter · 2020-03-26 12:40
>>23822 >>23823 You two have crossed a line now, for taking Bible verses out of context is a pet peeve of mine. Let's see the full chapter... 1 Corinthians 13 (ESV, emphasis mine): "If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love." Now, do you really think that the meaning of this statement is "don't be childish" or "don't let others perceive your actions as childish"? Here, it's being used as a descriptive illustration of how things will change between now and the next age. It seems to me that nothing is being prescribed at all.

It's fairly obvious the childish things aren't the hobbies, but the ways you share them here. Watching an anime or playing a game is not different at all from the normal person hobby of watching Netflix or reading books after all.
Anamika · 2020-03-26 15:37
>>23814 Normal is bad for an entirely different reason than hating weebs. Normal is avg. The avg person is poor & stupid. Hating normal is a reminder to oneself to not fall into the pit of mediocrity and get comfortable sitting there. It's practiced elitism. >>23822 >>23827 The core is "as you changed your interaction with the world changed". It does not elevate adults into being smarter people. It points out that you have inherent biases due to how you are forced to interact with the world. The world wont accept a grown man acting like a toddler.
Marly Krushkhova · 2020-03-26 16:27
>>23835 >Watching an anime or playing a game is not different at all from the normal person hobby of watching Netflix or reading books after all. Doing different things than the normal people was supposed to mean you had different thought patterns than the normal people. But people who think of themselves as part of a counterculture now indulge in the same dumb consoomerism and masturbatory self-gratification, only in a different flavor. While entertainment is prone to this by design so it can't be blamed, everything has become entertainment. Culture has been replaced by it, religion has been replaced by it, even charitable things or activism are nothing but a tool for self-promotion on social media. This prosumer nature that envelops every aspect of human interaction has made things fuarrrking aggravating for everyone with a brain. That's all there is now, your job and whatever dumb fuarrrking entertainment you use to shut off your brain when you get home. That's all people are now, on the internet, off the internet. Jesus Christ I think bees have more individuality.

>>23814 I kinda agree, I still play video games and watch anime, and spend a significant amount of time alone in my room. But I have started thinking that humans absolutely need to integrate with their societies, and that this anti-social behaviour might be the result of a general distaste with society. It should be noted that I don't believe society to be nearly as bad as it is made out to be on the chans. I think the effect is significantly amplified by the bitter users on the chans. I am not saying society is all roses and moonshine either (that is not how it goes, is it?) there are some genuinely nasty things that are viewed as normal, and a large amount of people are coerced into participating in this. I think this is the result of humans being herd animals of sorts. Despite the emphasis on individuality and whatnot people always want to be accepted by those around them and will quickly identify and mimick "leaders". With all this said, there are nice people, people that share interests with you, unfortunately I think it is harder for the non-"normal person" to filter through everyone that will end up hurting them to get to people that are nice. But it might be possible for everyone to be nice and accepting, unfortunately I don't believe I have the charisma to motivate people into being nice. I would also like to say that I don't believe society to be in a good state currently (or ever for that matter) so there should be an active effort to not just conform to current "standards" of society, because that is an excellent way to end up as yet another boring sheep that is just waiting to die. I read something beautiful once, something along the lines of being a pillar for one's community, someone other people can look up to. While it might seem a little vain, the idea I took away from it is that one should be the improvement one wishes to see. I have kinda digressed from the theme in the OP. So to give my quick thoughts: >Is having a social circle and romantic interests so awful? No, it is good and natural. >Growing up Probably maturing, yes. >Pathetically lame >Question interests This is the point where you should be careful, lainon. While you very well might have outgrown some interests and hobbies, you should take care to not hurt yourself by abandoning things you like to fit into society. Be honest with yourself. And please keep in mind that it is easy to say "everyone that watches anime is a fat neckbeard" and then try to disassociate with anime as a result. Anime is just the example here, but it could go for any interest you have. It is however definitely worth it to question your interests and I would encourage people to do this every now and then. It has the potential to cut a lot of negative things from one's life. I know I said this would be quick, but I kinda started ranting, so apologies for that.
Trinity · 2020-03-26 18:23
>>23841 >and that this anti-social behaviour might be the result of a general distaste with society I think it also has to do with a perceived inability to change society. >>23822 >>23823 obvious same user Worrying about whether or not something you like is "childish" is, in and of itself, childish. You should just do what makes you happy (as long as it's not hurting anyone), because worrying about whether you're "supposed" to have those interests will only make you miserable. Trying to find people who share in those interests could even be the key to finding a social circle or romantic interest. As a side note, what kind of a rock have you been living under where you think that normal people don't play video games? It's been decades since video games have been considered "childish" in normal person culture.

>>23814 Calling someone a normal person is rather poor on your part and I think that the term "normal user" can vary from community to community. For example when I think of a normal person/normal user on lainchan I don't necessarily think of someone in a loving relationship or whatever else you might think is a "normal person". I think of some fool who uses windows, discord, any form of social media and sometimes I'd go as far and say some fool who uses a high level programming language without understanding the theory behind it. Sometimes I'd even think of some fool who uses memes in their posts because they lack basic vocabulary to express themselves. Some may argue that I'm grouping too many people together and that might be the case but I don't quite get what are you doing on a predominantly tech website whilst being a tech illiterate. I dislike this silly notation of "normal person" in the first place, I think of it as just a stupid meme. Being a lone loser who posts on imageboards doesn't make you "better" than someone who's in a relationship. If both of you for example allow social media services to exploit you (or software companies) than both of you are "normal person" fools in my eyes.

I believe that is still largely the case. >>Chan enthusiasts are too into childish behaviors like playing video games and watching anime. Is being a normal person really so bad? Whether or not you like anime or video games isn't the problem. It's ultimately just another way to connect with others and is not inherently better or worse.
