>>20347 I've used regex's extensively in-code and on the command line, and I can say the following: - they're really nice to write, especially as they get more complex. while the complexity of the resultant state machine can grow exponentially, the syntax makes it incredibly easy, and grows linearally. - they're awful to read. anything >20 characters tends to be a nightmare. make sure you document your regex's accordingly.

I've been reading Lingua Latina after seeing that Latin thread. It's been going swimmingly, and I'm amazed at how much I already knew despite thinking I knew nothing about the language. It's definitely a hell of a lot easier than trying to learn Japanese. Though I do wish there were a similar book for that language. I already know kana and understand the concept of different kanji readings, so I don't see why a book can't use that to bootstrap you into the rest of the language. Then again, I'm no linguist.

Making slow but good progress on my lojban, and slowly making less crappy looking sprites for my gameboy game. learning always feels good
Bob Arctor · 2020-04-17 07:30
>>24974 I have heard many things about lojban. Do you know where to learn how Lojban works, I do not care about the vocabulary I just want to know what the grammer is like to see how different it is from natural languages. I often think that the possibility for languages is nearly endless but that the human brain naturally favors a particular strict order to language, making all natural languages extremely similar from the perspective of what is theoretically posssible. I would like to learn some lojban purely to get a glimps of what is theoretically possible.
Roy Batty · 2020-04-18 01:08
>>24985 The best place to learn Lojban is the CLL, which is the complete reference grammar but is written more as a self learning book, its avaliable for free online. Its a little bit out of date compared to what people speak today, but 95% of it is the same and its a great way to learn. The grammer is essentially Prolog as a language.
Linda Lee · 2020-04-18 03:30
>>24985 Well Lojban is modeled on existing natural languages, naturally, and so takes it's design decisions from them. It's important to remember that it, just like any natural language has it's own arbitrary rules on sentence formation. In this case those rules serve a design goal. Word order dominates to make it super simple and treat verbs as n-ary functions with specific semantics for each argument position. And to avoid lexical declination such as case. Devices exist, like in any other language, to change such word order. It is somewhat more iluminating to note that in latin, passive voice is unlike many modern language, in that it doesn't use 'to be' (or otherwise 'werden' ) as an auxiliary but it is instead a conjugation on iyt's own: dicitur means "it is said", if you say "est dicitur" you'e the saying "it has been said" which also illistrates how auxiliary words are not global in their meaning. I do not think lojban pushes the possibilities very far. One of the main features for achieving it's goal of non-ambiguity is it's morphology. Even verbal adjectives is something that's already seen in chinese (it's likely that much of lojban is inspired in chinese). Also we do not really know much of the wide variety of existing languages, there may be stranger things out there amd lojban may just be close to a very conventional model, particularly in it's choice for word order. Of course as far as that goes, there seems to be a natural order that our brains accomodate best. Usually SOV bht sometimes SVO, and also very commonly the verb at the end goes. As for noun modifiers, they usually come before the noun, but some languages put them after (eg spanish, french). Latin does have a standar word order but declension allows to subvert it quite a while. And some languages like chinese put time or place modifiers right before the verb, and all other a the end. It's actually fun to see a chinese-english translation where a whole sentence can be a phrase preceding a noun, as in "she took the I-last-night-leave-on-the-table-的-keys and left in a rush". Lastly, much of what makes a language unique and gives it it's character is it's history. And that really boils down to learning not just vocabulary but common patterns and idioms. Not to say that lojban isn't a very interesting language worth some study, of course, and now might be a good moment to say I know but very little of it. tl;dr lojban makes a great deal of arbitrary decisions just like any language and it's hardly doing something unseen in natural languages. It's mostly decisions made for specific design goals.

Maybe a little too bittersweet for this thread, but I managed to let go of some of the envy I've been feeling for someone. Some. Won't say who he is or what he does, but he had almost the same passions and talents in his teens that I had in mine. Only difference is, he's made a career out of these passions whereas I'm stuck at a dead-end job, my passions having been snuffed out ages ago. I've pieced together most of the story of his success, and the more I piece together, the less jealous I feel. Even though his story can be summarized as "he was in the right place at the right time (helped by a decent upbringing that nurtured his talents)", learning more about it helps me to let go. And now I've learned a critical part of his story, the event that got his foot in the door. I feel like I've learned enough to finally get all this out of my head and move on. Maybe it's just a feeling of closure, I don't know. Or maybe that spiteful side of me thinks "ha, I was right, he DID just get lucky. now I can prove it." Either way, I feel a lot better.
Agent Smith · 2020-04-27 20:40
Life is so beautiful but it is dulled by the ways we live. Every piece of lackadaisical spirit and love is transgressive. Every transgression is a step towards a better world, builds that potential just a little bit higher. One day, maybe soon, we will find that the barriers in front of us have become paper thin, and the choice is to jump through them or die. This world is being killed. It is practically too late now to stop it. But death is just a time when one form of life changes into another. Every time of strife is followed by time of peace, every mass extinction is followed by evolutionary explosion. Order dissolves into chaos, chaos converges to order. We should mourn the loss but we can't slip into despair, because we know that the world is bigger and stronger than all of humanity, and even the most powerful people and institutions with all their machinations will one day be humbled. The hard times will get harder. But there is light at the end of the tunnel, never forget it. <3

>>27553 Nice. Anyway, there's this lovely feeling I get whenever I look back at my life, no matter how bad it felt back then. For example, a couple of years back I had depression; it was one of the worst times of my life. I was only about a month away from starving myself to death when it started getting better. Now, when I look back, I just feel nice about it all - about all the things that have happened then, the music I have discovered and the last couple of sessions with my band before we dissolved, about my discovered interest in philosophy and whatnot. I feel like this about most of my memories now. Pics related. I took them when I started feeling a little better (at that point I didn't even know it, they were supposed to be my last pictures ever). Apologies for the quality.

Personally, things are pretty middling for me right now but as per the topic I'll stick with the positive. I just ordered a Thinkpad X220t for $100 and am looking forward to it coming in. I used an X220 as my daily driver through high school and the first half of uni before it gave out on me, so it'll be nice to finally be back on my old machine with the addition of a touch screen. I even still have the ultrabase 3 to use with it. Just gotta decide what distro to stick on it; Debian for old time's sake, or maybe something new? Also finally got around to starting DUNE and it seems really great so far. It has the perfect blend of politics and science fiction elements that's really hard to come by (Legend of the Galactic Heroes comes to mind, but that's all I know of). Aaaand I started playing less vidya in favor of reading/coding, which feels nice. As much as I love my old PS2 with the HDD mod, I think I'm gonna switch to PC + Switch + Wii U only; there simply isn't enough time in my schedule nowadays to play all the classics, so I figure I'll focus on newer titles and the Wii U for it's support of every Ninty console prior to the 3DS + Xenoblade X. >It was nice to get out, though. Once. Didn't get sick, either. A breath of fresh air---however metaphorical that statement might be, when wearing a mask---must be nice. I've had to be out, because of my work, though, so I get fat too much `fresh air' so to speak. Genuinely terrifying going out for work every day. Well, most days, including weekends. The pay and a half is nice, though. I got a day off today. That's nice. So here's hoping COVID doesn't last a hundred years, so I can actually sit down and learn how to properly invest it. They've already started helping me figure out the next steps, how to transition if I do, whether I should move (probably should - dangerous area - but nothing's so simple as that, what with all the important things in my life all being here), etc.

I've got rid of my brain fog. tl;dr: by digital detoxing It's a state of mind when you physically can do the task, but mentally you can't make yourself start it, unless it's a deadline (but even then you are doing it uneffectively by wasting too much time on distractions). The catch I got while trying to fight it is -- you only have a too limited amount of time during the day to actually process new information (so you can make logic assumptions about it). And with news and social media (Discord is social media too), it's too easy to immerse yourself in endless controversial content. So I turned on notifications only for too important topics and hid time-wasting apps in my phone launcher. In two days I felt liberating... KISS launcher, in particular, shows apps in list, not grid view, so my ADHD is not triggered by wrong icons placement. But I also fixed my average sleep duration to the healthy state a few weeks before, so it contributed too.

Basically watched maymays on Youtube, slept a lot, ate poorly and drank heavily. Anyway, it seems that I'm finally coming out from the other end of this episode: finished a half-read book that has been laying on my table since the heavy mood began, had an intense physical exercise routine on monday this week, did some jogging too, picked up another book and, in the span of ~4 days, I'm now half-way through reading it. Soon I'll probably have mustered enough strength to pick up where I left off in my research and get something done. Also discovered that earmuffs work effectively in blocking out majority of the distractions that are bothering my reading. Hope you guys are doing great.

As though the weight has finally been liften and I can see that while they may or may not be a true exit to this labyrinth, there is in fact a clear path forward. I normally take 500 - 1000 mg. I'm ~140lbs for reference, though when I was ~110-125 lbs I did the same, and notice no great difference in effect. My memory is fairly limited and full of holes, I feel as though if a person is a thread, then I am a very limited core thread with several other materials tied together. The worst was just someone explaining the show had sensitive themes and images for anyone going into it. I realized I, not in a way that fuarrrking bad or edgy, do the same soykaf but in the sense of not watching certain youtube videos sometimes because i'm thinking "i bet people in the comments are gonna be saying soykaf like...". Like there was this youtube video awhile back from an animator/podcast/weird skit combo (im sure many of you have heard of), ironically enough, called "something terribly offensive", and I a hundred percent both avoided it for awhile and then avoided the comments (not always a bad move) thinking "i bet everyones gonna be sayin soykaf like 'this is just like society now.....' and arguing". And while there was some of that it mostly was just people appreciating the character in this video as a really bizarre well done interesting character. Like all the other things this guy does. A lot of the discussion even close to what I was thinking was just people comparing said character to people they actually knew or met, which usually happens on all of this guys videos. I even do take long breaks from imageboards but I notice a lot of people go through this cycle of first using imageboards --> getting desensitized --> realizing how often you are casually getting pissed or upset --> noticing it more and thus getting resensitized --> avoidance. Im definitely in the last, but i'm learning to be less of avoidant of things out of pessimism and just being okay if I see what I expect and being kinda delighted when I don't.

The basic design is proven, now what they need to do is reentry tests from orbital speeds to test the heat shield, how the fins handle hypersonic speeds, etc. Probably another dozen or so prototypes will explode until they get it working reliably. But that's what R&D is for. The booster? Untested. It's now on a test stand (the photo is from when they were moving it from the construction bay) and they'll do the usual tests. Load with pressurized liquid nitrogen to see if the basic design and welding techniques hold up. If successful, load with methane/oxygen and test-fire engines several times. If unsuccessful, make design tweaks and improvements in welds. Normal R&D. I'm eager to see the whole stack lift off. It'll be a beast. Twice the thrust of the Saturn V! Exciting times, man.

>>47452 The science potential is the real reason I'm so interested in Starship development. The sheer mass that it could carry to orbit, or land on other worlds, is game-changing from a science perspective. I'm particularly interested in the potential of using the Moon as a science base. Radio and optical telescopes on the far side of the moon permanently shielded from Earth, and shielded from the sun for 2 weeks out of 4? Infrared scopes in the bottom of permanently shadowed polar craters that haven't seen sunlight in billions of years? All on geologically stable ground in hard vacuum? That'd be so friggin' cool. And Starship's heavy-lift capabilities could make all that happen. Or at reduced payload mass, use a Starship as the mother of all kick stages to send an ultra-high-speed probe to intercept the next Oumuamua-type object. Or put a dozen heavy orbiters around another planet all at once for less cost than a traditional flyby mission. There's also ideas being bandied about to use a modified Starship as a giant Hubble. Use the tube structure itself (with a retractable nosecone) to house the mirrors and sensors - no complex JWST-style unfolding of mechanisms needed. Less to go wrong, cheaper and faster to design. The Indian space program is really getting interesting. They've got a home-grown equivalent to the Apollo CSM called Gaganyaan. Capable of carrying a crew of 3 for a week, ready for uncrewed testing. It's an impressive program. They didn't just use modified Soyuz and Salyut designs bought from Russia, like China did for the Shenzhou and Tiangong. ISRO did all the R&D from scratch. Though I do kinda wish ISRO was more creative with their rocket names. "Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark 3" is a terribly dull name for such a highly-capable rocket.

Life isn't perfect and we still have a lot of hardships, but he's been the light of my life through poverty, homelessness, abuse, severe depredsion and now covid. He's known me since age 6, and we're hopefully getting married next year. :')

Spoilering this because I know from other threads that are some Lains who get depressed when they see people gush about relationships. Don't read if you don't want to see that stuff. my girlfriend is great. She's so supportive, kind, hot, funny, smart, etc. Everything to look for in a girlfriend. I still get excited whenever I see her. I know I make her just as happy too and knowing that makes me feel even better. I'm very lucky

Dropping halfchan was one of the better decisions in my life. My attention span has increased, I worry less, my anxiety is mostly gone and it's easier for me to concentrate on studying.

I promised to post it in the cock.li thread. Best buy of my life - it helps me focus on work and calms me down. It's beauty restored my motivation and it's light showed me the way. They say that if you stare long enough at a lava lamp, you can see your future in it. No one actually says that but me, lol

I managed to figure out how to alter 2 dresses to fit my arms. The last few days I've been super inspired to put together some really cute outfits and I feel like the fanciest I've ever been.

>>19156 I started a light workout routine at the suggestion of a friend. We both set a time, and work out for half an hour or more going at our own pace without much of a rigid plan for what to do. I'm skinnyfat and haven't had an exercise routine in years, so right now he's just trying to get me in the habit of picking up dumbbells or something every day and spending some time exerting myself 6 days per week. I just do what feels good without somebody pressuring me to make some amount of progress by an arbitrary date. I haven't even been fully consistent yet, and some days I'm too lethargic to push myself, but I'm already feeling some muscles tighten up in certain places. I'm happy to have a tangible if small proof that what I'm doing is worth it :)

>>20934 if you're still around anon, I recommend trying to sleep in 90 minute intervals so you're not waking up in the middle of a REM cycle. I started doing that recently, and even if it means sacrificing some sleep I wake up feeling refreshed instead of like I woke from the dead. (with the caveat that too many short nights of sleep will still wear you down eventually, of course) >>20947 is there anything you could fix in your room, like indicator lights that stay on all night, light from a window, or annoying ambient sounds or something?

I met some really cool people who i can connect with. Creative, active and interesting people and not the usual friends who only seek the company of misery. Also i had some interesting adventures behind me, despite the soykaf weather, atleast a little something happened this summer.

Went to class, had a nap, overcame laziness, exercised outside in the sun, stretched and showered. Feeling very good.

>>47553 >everyone is normal here having a gf doesn't instantly make you normal. There are weird girls out there too.
Tyrell Wellick · 2021-08-22 03:52
Its been quite a nice night, Lain. Just drinking and smoking cigs with the folks and telling dumb stories. Its the little tihngs like this that make me keep living life. Even when life is sad and hard, I try to think of nights like this to keep me positive towards the future.
The Oracle · 2021-08-22 05:31
>>47553 not him but absolutely not like even factoring in people probably say more insane soykaf here than would otherwise, a lot of people here are not functioning adults and are an accident waiting to happen. There is famous people with wives and husbands and kids and money who are not normal by a longshot. At a certain point normal isnt I made it out of the chan/neet hole and its about being a reliable and stable human being of which many here arent and are often even proud of that.

started school, meeting my classmates, they're all really pleasant so far. It's nice to be around people who can hold conversations about super esoteric subjects.

>>18649 Managed to finally rid myself of the whole pill-nonsense, and drop all of the conspiracy-retardation this week. It feels liberating, not to think about everything in terms of "this is to decimate world population" or "they're pushing total control". I recommend everyone to study and research everything they don't know anything about, being sceptical and questioning everything, even the scepticists, helps immensely in making educated decisions and leading a more peaceful life.
Unspecified · 2021-08-22 08:50
>>49037 the real way to a peaceful life is ignoring it not participating in the news cycle. normal people obsessively watching news are still seduced by "things bad".
Lain Iwakura · 2021-08-23 16:52
>>49037 Until they sterilize you or your children, or holodomor you, and you didn't see it coming because you stopped thinking and failed to recognize that something innocuous had been reworked and weaponized. So basically the issue wioth your post is you're speaking in terms of truth, ie leaving the cave, the labyrinth, the false notion of control. Really what you're describing is the balance between acceptance, peace, and ignorance, and paranoia, preparation, and skepticism. In your case you got tired and have simply pivoted to the other extreme, pretending you're an island and not realizing the rest of the world, which gives you food, shelter, and security, the organs of your greater body so to speak, are being destroyed. You figure you will go with the flow and roll with the punches, and maybe you will, maybe you won't, but this is not a matter of truth it's a matter of lifestyle. And you shouldn't put it any other way. You have chosen a new lifestyle.
