Why is ego-hate so common now?

Hiro Protagonist · 2019-05-26 20:57
Everyone seems to be obsessed with the nonsensical ideas of "universal oneness" and "ego-death" these days. I don't get it. Where does this stem from? Is it due to feelings of impotence? That they feel they can accomplish nothing if they are alone? It's so annoying. I am not one with you, you are not one with me.

Partially people feel- or are taught to feel by the internet- that they are no one special. That they are just another ant in a colony of 7-some-odd billion. Because if they echo even a little snowflake-ism, they are instantly seen as arrogant and delusional. Another reason could be the fact that now more than ever, in some ironic twist of fate, we are more isolated than ever. I'm not saying in any way technology is bad, no, I'm no neo-luddite. Rather, technology gives us more freedom, and in present day, we now have the freedom to choose to be isolated without much consequence. Online shopping; chatrooms; online classrooms- it's not too much of a stretch to foresee a future where in-person contact is virtually eliminated. Because of that loneliness, people tend to look for anything, any reason at all to feel like they are not completely alone. When in fact, we are all irreversibly alone. Born, bred, and die alone. We may meet the stray NPC along the way, but it is our nature to experience our life in first person, not as some groupthink collective consciousness that chemically addicted fools dream of being a part of. Forgive me, if I seemed a bit emotionally charged there. Then again, this thread is on the concept of "hate" anyways. However, I am not of the opinion that incorporating a little ego loss is a bad thing either. To separate yourself from your life is an obviously impossible task. Yet by distancing ones self from situations day to day, especially emotionally taxing or mentally draining ones, we can see the world with a new perspective. I'm sorry for being a nerd, but an analogy I can think of is changing from first person to third person in Minecraft. It's less of dissolving into the universe and more of being able to experience things with a new set of eyes. Just my two cents.

there are a couple reasons. I think some people chase ego death because they see it as a "safe" escape from life. Like heroin, but unlike heroin destroying your ego will not destroy your life. Western pop-buddhism is a big part of this. "stop desiring things, and you will be happy!" bullshit like that. In the end their ego actually gets bigger, as they believe they have attained enlightenment. Personally, I feel that cultivating a small ego is important. Self-centered thinking is frequently delusional. I call it "ego poisoning". It leads, in men, to either the belief that the world is a huge battle and if they are "winning" they must be some sort of strong ubermensch, or if they are "losing" that they must be some sort of defeated weakling. Basically they become bitches. In women it is more subtle but they also become bitches. The best way to be is not thinking about yourself, but thinking about your actions. Also: you mixed up "ego death" with panpsychism and related theories. They are related but distinct.

Not sure who you mean by "everyone". I don't really see this everywhere as you suggest.

>>14316 The ego is a story you tell yourself. It's like a 24 hour radio broadcast. You can tune in to other channels and receive different information. I think changing channels away from the ego show is extremely helpful when trying to connect with other individuals especially when attempting to resolve conflicts. I believe that changing channels is the first step to empathy. I choose to use my ego to develop strategies. It's great for evaluating different plans, analyzing and making value judgements. I think I am unlikely to get what I want if I use it for other things.

A preemptive movement to encourage people to accept transhumanism and the dissolution of individual humans.

>>14330 yeah not everywhere but on the internet at least its very prevalent and i see it too. Especially from pop scientists who are hellbent to promote >>14323 for some reason and if you pay attention you ll see that a lot of people are catching up and repeating it.Check literally any news article about some discovery in astronomy for example and sure enought you have people commenting "oh wow we trully are nothing in the grand scheme of things" or smthing.Personally i find it extremely demoralizing but i can see why its becoming so popular along with other new age beliefs because It essentially lifts all responisbility from you about your actions or your achievements.Same reason why nihilsm is such a sweet trap.

> I am not one with you, you are not one with me. this is not a scientific worldview, the paradigm set forth by the einsteinian revolution is that every socalled particle of matter exists within relation to every other particle the ego was developed over time to be attached to individual 'island realities' or 'reality tunnels'. since you've never stepped outside of your own reality tunnel, you can't see that there are others, you constantly color the world with your own projections, and that world is your own personal illusory existence, your maya or durga. maya is only veiling until it is revealing, it is a doomed world of animal repetition until it becomes the shakti of the universe you cannot be separate from anything else, because there is no separate space-time. your nervous system creates the illusion of separateness, because that is the function of attachment to island-worlds. if you were to experience the fullness of your connectedness to everything, to the billions of signals that are showing themselves to your nervous system now, without being prepared for it, you would blow out your cns

It's a trendy meme that came about with stuff like Rick and Morty, and it probably gets popular because it all comes from an existential crisis, that's no doubt influenced by how fuarrrking expensive it all is today, relatively. Yes we can buy iPads fairly easily, but the stuff our nature demands? Shelter, adequate sustenance and procreation? These are needs that are treated as luxuries, a notion backed by elder people bragging about how they possessed all this by age 25. We don't just perceive ourselves as failures from a societal and economic stand point when we're renting, childless and breaking open a pack of instant ramen at age 30, we feel it on a deeper and biological level that we've failed. Our wishes that we could afford a permanent and secure abode, to eat wholefoods and to have kids in the stress-free environment that a safe and stocked home should really provide, is victim to the perfect form of oppression. Why oppression? It's not our fault that housing is now considered an investment commodity, we didn't ask that marketers massively price gouge "organic" food that's freshly pulled out of the ground compared to processed foods and we'd all love to spend less time out of work to raise our kids instead of working over-time to afford their food, medicine, schooling and care. All is the result of profiteering, but we've been convinced to blame ourselves for wanting to socialise, engage with technology and ultimately not wishing to be enslaved. So our choice is to be enslaved as immigrants are, to live with the unfulfillment modern life provides despite the luxuries of technology(they're portable and addicting advertising boards, mind you) or become this super-star worker that's able afford all these needs which sadly can often (although not exclusively) come down to privilege.

We live in the end of history. The only thing left to happen is for every country to inevitably become a materialist capitalist state, which will require the dissolution of all tradition and mystery. After this, humanity will be obsolete thanks to AI and will go extinct. People understand this in their heart but refuse to accept it because it makes them sad.
