You're Dead! · 2018-12-10 04:27
What are your plans when you are dead, or in a coma, or brain dead, or your costs are too great for the expected benefits of treatment. or some other possibility when you might not be able to make good decisions? Also, anyone know good command line tools for extracting particular frames from a film. something where i just specify a number, or set of numbers, which returns the frame i need? (finding this exact frame, screencapping it, cropping it; such a pain in the arse)
Sipho Nkosi · 2018-12-10 05:20
find the timestamp of the frame, then ffmpeg -ss <timestamp> -i <infile> -dframes 1 out.jpeg
Donna Hawthorne · 2018-12-10 09:53
whatever your plan is I don't think you will be able to execute it while dead/brain dead/in a coma

>>11478 You need to write an advance directive and have it signed by a lawyer. The rules vary by state, but if it is properly drafted and signed then whatever you put in the directive is supposed to be followed. Unfortunately, it can be overruled by "the family's wishes" depending on the state you are in. Knowledge is power, so you need to know your state and your family needs to know your intentions.

https://nectome.com/ https://alcor.org/ one of these. I have my cryonics contracts completed and multiple redundant routes of alerting Alcor as to my whereabout and health status. If it becomes available, I will likely switch to Nectome's service, as a matter of cost effectiveness and my thoughts on the eventual outcome of preservation.

I dont really care, im not going to make plans in advance because in a different mental state il want different things. i dont care if im braindead retarded and i want to play with blocks im gonna play with fuarrrking blocks then, not have some wish fulfilled by me 20 yrs ago that i dont even understand anymore. I think at that time il be thinking about and coming to terms with death anyways assuming im conscious. i doubt any plans will matter to me.

I would be interested in knowing further details pertaining to >>11490 XERXES' decisions, such as about the differences and similarities among the referates of those uniform resource locators. what sort of things might go wrong, what plans address those emergencies? Is >>11496 Nell denying the possibility of (partial) knowledge of what an other Nell wants? that seems rather strong as an assumption. I wonder if perhaps Nell is raising the concern as whether one can know anything, besides by invasion, about the inner workings of another person, and coupling that premise to the idea that each person only exists in their Now, from which it is not unreasonable to consider that who they are at one time and who they are at another time are two separate people, similar as they might be; that it would be quite impolite to pry at the inner workings of and quite immoral to interfere with the decisions of another person. which would seem to support the idea of Nell not planning ahead for the welfare of the other person future Nell no matter how much present Nell might feel like future Nell and present Nell are indeed the same person.

>>11511 "Nell" here and you're an odd one but your analysis touched on some things very very deep in Nell's psyche which is pretty impressive.

>>11511 I cannot build the case in a post. Ill provide an elevator pitch size answer to your question and a link to the extensive Alcor, brain preservation foundation, and carbon copies libraries on the subject. https://carboncopies.org/resources/ https://alcor.org/Library/index.html http://www.brainpreservation.org/links/ No protocol is perfect in the present day. The question is, what degree of fidelity do you desire your eventual outcome to have, what standard do you value for that fidelity and how much are you willing to pay. Alcor's approach is older, time tested, and well established with a high degree of financial stability, a focus on long term viability and an intent to wait for advanced medical nanotechnology to provide for the reconstruction of patients in biostasis. Nectome, sacrifices immediate financial stability for a more steady revenue stream, and arguably higher preservation fidelity using clinical euthanasia and aldehyde stabilized cryopreservation followed by EM sectioning and imaging. Their method is more accessaible as an end of life last ditch effort, and offers a much more streamlined process compared to alcor's small mountain of paperwork. However, Nectome will not provide recovery services and has not had time to demonstrate the excellent level of long contract fullfillment, nor to build the strong internal community and funding apparatuses that Alcor has. Another option would be the newest company, Brain Backups. They claim to have a nondestructive non lethal scanning technique for effectively backing up your mental contents periodically through ought your life and then reconstructing a complete connectomic emulation from the contrast mapped connectome. This probably results in a good long term result but poor end of life emergency applicability and low overall fidelity and convenience compared to direct slice and scan. Moreover, it probably costs more over time to perform and maintain such a process, and as of yet has not demonstrated a viable client base, unlike Nectome and Alcor. The links above, especially Alcor's library on the economics of cryonics, provide an excellent exploration of what it takes to make these efforts run smoothly, what death scenarios are currently salvageable, and what the limits of remains recovery and preservation are given today's technology and what we know about available recovery and restoration technologies.

>>11511 It is also important to note that Alcor prefers to maintain the existence of the biological matter and intends to restore humans as humans, or as cyborgs. Nectome goes straight for complete computerization and Brain Backups is a more flexible option at the moment.
