Why is something as pseudoscientific and generally useless as "therapy" pushed so heavily nowadays?

Unnamed · 2026-08-28 13:57
As someone who was in and out of psych wards as an adolescent, as someone who's been to dozens and dozens of therapists, as someone with multiple complex conditions, how is talking to some clueless privileged user with a bullshit degree going to improve my material circumstances in any way? Why am I the bad guy for being against the psychiatric industrial complex? What real purpose does "therapy" serve in relation to neoliberal capitalism? Therapy, meds, self help, positive thinking, it's all just gaslighting. It's all based on the assumption that the prevailing conditions are reasonable and sound and you are maladaptive. There's no way to be healthy or sane in a world like this. Nobody gets "cured", at best they get brainwashed into thinking things are tolerable enough to be able to serve Capital and not cause problems. The only authentic reason to live under present conditions is to struggle to destroy these conditions.

Programming and vagina culture. Its an extension of woman gossip, decorated by a degree to make you think its meaningful. The world itself is not as complex and certain gravitations determine their outcomes. Woman love it especially becouse they can blame thier stupid decision on "muh trauma". Which then becomes a self fulfilling prophecy, because enough dumb decisions will certainly lead to "trauma". Overall, its a fantastic self fulfilling cosmos, to ensnare people into. And note how many psychologists are ... funni hat people, and like freud made their clients even worse.

In one of Nietszche's books he talks about this but in the context of Christianity. Humans evolved to live at low population densities and men especially have to fight and struggle to survive. Many of these instincts are maladaptive at higher population densities and particularly for the majority of humanity that is now relegated to a labor slave class. So, there is a need for psychological techniques to deal with and redirect these emotions and thoughts to socially "productive" outlets. This is where the Christian rituals and their practice of confession come from. Since religion has been declining but the mindset and social organization remain mostly the same there was a need to develop new techniques. Now you have the set of techniques you mentioned, chief among them therapy and psychiatric drugs, whose purpose is to maintain the social order but mask themselves in concern for your well being.

>how is talking to some clueless privileged user with a bullshit degree going to improve my material circumstances in any way? fuarrrking exactly. I don't get it either. I advocate for therapy for anyone that just needs to talk to someone if they feel something wrong mentally, but if you're problem is that you're poor, it won't fix soykaf. You'll prolly feel *something*, but you just got a couple dollars poorer in the process. Worsening the actual problem. Therapy is for getting a mental diagnosis, following up with that diagnosis, or getting a reality check. Anything else is a scam. and fuarrrk that stoic, nietzschean, self-help bs. Delusion's no better than paying therapy for nothing.

>>101707 You pretty much nailed it, one of things you overlooked however is that these kinds of people just cope themselfs by lying to themselfs into thinking therapy will fix the faulty world they live in. They just seek to convince themselfs that its all ok and fine when deep down they know its a lie and they just want you to acknowledge their own lie. The solution lies in strengthening their own delusions and drive them down further into the cliff of denial until they themselfs break down. After all these kinds of people produce only an even more unsustainable system where one day the floor will collapse on them. You cant fight agains these sorts of conditions, people are too weak mentally to acknowledge the truth, instead we should seek to make them lie to themselfs even harder until they have no concepts of truth any longer and will become deranged themselfs at which point they become true victims of their own system of denial and the doctors become the patients and the patients will be the doctors. >>101709 This right here too, the world has allowed itself to be feminized trough their obsession and with cunts and now has become weak and servile, so weak they cannot live on their own and now it had become their death sentence. It's just a next level scam. Doctors pretend to cure people while ignoring their issues & peddling poison. Now these "mind doctors" can pretend to cure people without even giving out fake medicine, they just pretend their words are the cure and it's all in your head. Doctors love these guys too, they constantly push their patients to see their issues as "all in their head" so they don't even need to bother diagnosing them.

I don't know when a therapist would be something worth recommending, but there are useful bits of therapeutic theory that help you understand what isn't working. Just read the sort of books therapists are supposed to read to understand your particular issues as best as you can assess them. It doesn't solve the world being ruled by cool-headed child-shredding psychopaths, but that isn't a problem solved on a budget. >>101742 >Hitler cried like a baby when his niece Geli Raubal died and became a strict vegetarian shortly after, believing it was "her wish." >>101707 I feel you on talking to privileged people about being disenfranchised. I think both things can be true at once. You can be form Maladaptive habits, patterns of thinking, ways of responding to stress and feedback, and have outside unjust bullshit fuarrrk you over. Both can spiral to make each other worse in my experience. For example I take myself, Due to said trauma I have very soykafty financial conditions, education and other things most people at my point in live dealt with.I have this pushed into my brain since a kid, cause we were really poor so I see no point in applying myself, cause my family can't afford it. Because I don't apply myself I don't have achivements and feel bad and Insecure. These things from a circle until you start to try and pull it apart. Some of these things are from my maladaptive traits, while others are bad systems and rng with awful family. Despite obviously influencing my state, they can't be excuses for my actions Those are my choices and that's the worst part of it but you gotta try to face it neutral and understanding. There's nothing to cure In my opniion, there's just new moves you can learn to dodge programming that live imprinted into you, and therapy can be helpful for it, at least a bit. For me It made me start to take agency in live seriously. If your going to get 'cured' you might as well eat brain pills itll be cheaper. I do agree its highly privileged, so do the therapist, it's the classic problem of nobody up top cares about anything other then profit. I think you gotta focus on what you can change in your own life, not on how awful everything else is. No point. Good example is climate change if you think about it seriously theres only rope(but thats every other day for me, maybe for you too so I really suggest doing things for yourself.) Some personal things why I like therapy now: I just started therapy(6 months), never really thought I needed it, thought i wasn't bad enough for depression cause i could move around most of the time, didn't have care from mother or school. Since 16 been doing drugs to cope with trauma, suicidal idilation since 13, I'm thinking cptsd but i thought everything unders the sun, in my opinion it only matters as far as you can see it in your own behaviour and change/deal with it, the name isn't imporant. Anyways, I've been to a psychward as well, after a drug induced psychosis, left of my own accord(thought I gotta go to work cause debt), sat around for 2 months and then started to work and smoke weed again, now I'm 6 months clean, don't do much self harm, go to the gym, I feel a lot better, clearheaded, though symptoms are much more intense. It feels good to feel though. Therapy helps me process and I think I would rope like 5 times already, or more accurately fantasize about it while wasting away. Barely have the cash for it, won't have soon but I think theraphy is good op, though I can't imagine what's a life long annoyance it can be with progress. I think you gotta be lighter to yourself, and see your own progress better. I do hate how I talk about my feelings and my therapist is like "And what's that about?" like fuarrrk me can at least try to act like a human being god

>>101707 >It's all based on the assumption that the prevailing conditions are reasonable and sound and you are maladaptive. This is quite a 1940s-timed talking post tbf my lainon. I'm not questioning the validity of the claim, but I do think it depends on the country where you're using said services. I know that in some countries (perhaps most predominantly the US) their psychiatric clinics are widely controlled by the pill (there's always a pill they wanna sell you, even if it hasn't been proven to work by anyone anywhere), which reflects the for-profit, empiricist, technology-driven make up of the overall social order. But in some countries their psychiatric clinics are dominated by paradigms which acknowledge, for one, that you can't medicate some things away with SSRIs for instance, that, number two, we're living in a totally fuarrrked up time mentally/spiritually, where the driving motor of the system is to generate neuroses, create dependencies and form all sorts of maladaptive complexes and fetishes in its inhabitants and then exploiting and profiting off of these to the victims' detriment, and thirdly, that the therapists' job isn't to readjust a patient to a society that is inherently sickly, but rather to give the patient the tools, critical feedback and emotional support necessary to the patient's personal growth (which may or may not but ideally should include learning the requisite means to navigate the hell we're living while preserving or cultivating the patient's inner world (e.g., his or her coping skills, emotional control, behaviour adapting, etc.) in order to give our human/animal side its due despite and/or in opposition to this increasingly instrumentalized, commodified, financialized, transactional, automatized, de-skillified, loveless, dehumanized, soulless, nihilistic, abstraction-filled hypermodern world of ours). Dunno if you were looking for venues that might offer this "real" mental health and therapy services due to bad experiences in your own country so far, but I think the most inexpensive alternative is to educate yourself on how your mind works (this might be a bit "out there", but isn't it kinda funny and strange that nobody has thought of equipping every n00b at life with a basic introductionary, even a rudimentary manual on how our minds work or how we ought to operate it, even though our minds are more powerful and complex than any computer we might create and we all use them every day? It's bananas to think that there are people out there who don't know how to operate theirs, metaphorically speaking keep hitting themselves in the head with a hammer and then wondering why their heads hurt and what might they do to stop it. But so it goes...). That cuts away most of the unnecessary money-grubbing bloat that is the "Medical Industrial Complex", let's call it, while possibly avoiding grifters and privileged clueless idiots with bullshit degrees giving you advice on things that you might have just as well googled yourself or read in a pirated 101 psychology textbook (though, it's always better to read the books by people who actually knew a thing or two and had practices their craft for decades, and serving as the pioneers of their discipline). 2 cents. it might not be something, but it's not nothing either

I once had a therapist come into my high school as a class on self help the school forced us to do (to show everyone how progressive they are). It still baffles me how these people can be taken serious at all. We first started with playing "hindu spiritualist"music, where they put us in a circle, and we were supposed to take deep breaths and "connect to the world". After that, they had us drawing in piece of paper, in a way that one person couldn't see what was supposed to be drawn, and the other person was supposed to describe the thing only with words. This was to encourage "peaceful, non violent communication", whatever the fuuarrkk that means. And after having us doing this non-sense for four classes, we had to take a minute to hug the person next to us and stare into their eyes for a minute. I still want to understand how ANY of this is supposed to help anyone at all; and how any of this isn't a pseudoscience. Keep in mind this is a licensed, graduated therapist, who has real life clients. Therapy is nothing more than scamming vulnerable people.

Your take is very naive. Depression to the point where you can hardly get out of bed is not a natural reaction to a bad environment. Suffering is a normal part of human existence and has always been. Sure, many things seem worse right now, but that is not a justification to give up normal functioning of your brain forever when so many people throughout history have managed just fine in much worse circumstances than whatever you think you are going through. You do not need to be brainwashed to see positive aspects in a bad world, you just need to be grown up and accept your existence for what it is. Also, there are probably more reasons to seek therapy than you realize. Do you think something like narcissism can be fixed by changing "material circumstances"? That being said, I agree that in practice, therapy mostly is like kicking dead whales down the beach. I have never tried it myself, but from what I have heard, many therapists have zero life experience and have have chosen this profession just because they had an interest in psychology. I could personally not take someone like this serious enough to let them challenge my beliefs. I also would not trust them to protect my privacy as data protection in healthcare is soykaf, so I could not imagine truly opening up. So I believe the best approach is to try and fix whatever is wrong with your mind yourself, perhaps with the help of some good books. Of course this will not work for people with problems so severe that they have no energy to help themselves.

>>102757 Not him, but the argument I've seen is that these behavioral traits are categorized as problems because of the capitalist system. The capitalist system expects you to be not an individual human but a ready cog to fit into the machine, and any behavioral traits that make you either less effective or just less standard as a worker under this system are identified as defects to be corrected. To offer an example, a lot of people are a little bipolar; they have periods where they're energetic and can be industrious and busy, and periods where they're not. If you work a stereotypical job, you're expected to clock in around 9am and out around 5pm, and do this year round. There's not much wiggle room where some weeks you'll work 60 hours and some weeks you'll work 20, even if the average is still 40. The tempo of labor in antiquity had a lot more ups and downs. Obviously an ancient subsistence farmer had periods where he was very busy, and needed to be able to work, but he also had entire seasons with comparatively little work vs harvest time or planting time. A lot of small cottage industry also has some of this, if not freedom, variety, and its possible that traits like 'bipolar disorder' are in fact strengths under historic conditions. Under the modern workplace rules, you need to be transformed in order to fit your expected role, and there's little room for that role to be transformed in order to fit you. Therapy, psychiatry, these are some of the tools used in sculpting people to fit their roles.

>>102759 If you live with someone who has major depressive disorder you will quickly realize how untrue this is. These diseases don't just affect your workplace performance and they don't become inconsequential if you are in a situation where your material needs are all taken care off. Even if a person never needed to clock in to work at all and had plenty of support from home, their disease would still be debilitating, it prevents them from forming new relationships, achieving any of their goals, or living authentically. Capitalism might make things *worse* but it isn't the source of the issue.

>>102760 Not that lainon, but to be honest I'd be surprised most of the people here didn't have personal experience with severe mental illness. I do broadly agree that most of these aren't diseases in any real sense. I mean, really, how many of us actually want to live this way? Why are we trying to be so good at something we fundamentally do not want?

>>102759 As somebody with a litney of mental health problems, I identify the argument as bullshit. Clocking in is the absolute least of my problems.

>>102762 any capitalist sort of has to, right? if it's just meds and therapy you can get to happiness or cope as an individual. if your mind is healthy and reacting to bad stimuli then there are only collective solutions left which capitalism doesn't offer.

Serious mental illness is real, sure. There've been lunatics throughout the ages. On the other hand a huge fraction of people today are on antidepressants, a huge fraction of people today are on drugs to deal with ADHD and like issues. An alarming number of psychologists and psychiatrists exist and apparently make enough money to survive. If someone was paying me to pin this on capitalism, I'd say that the capitalists had all these products, new drugs, therapy, et cetera, and needed to develop a market. You and I as bonafide lunatics may not be part of that market they developed, but you probably know someone who is. And even if you are a true and honest lunatic, the less lucrative ways of supporting you and steering you well have been removed, while added chemical and psywar hazzards have been emplaced in your environment. ....for your economic pleasure.....

>>102765 if you truly believe most mental illness is just a disease then blaming yourself doesn't make any sense. I think even capitalist know on some level they are making themselves "sick"
