The Cultural and Artistic Frontier

Boris Grishenko · 2026-08-19 21:46
Where is the modern frontier? From the dawn of civilization, there has almost always been a frontier, for lack of a better word. The place the money hasn’t found yet. The place that hasn’t been regulated and calmed yet. The place where the sheer freedom of being there consumes the minds and souls of those who make it out to where the old norms no longer matter. The place where people look forward to the future and not backwards to the old better days, mired in bittersweet nostalgia. The place that eventually builds the metaphysical artifacts that take over the culture that came before it. The Renaissance. The New World and the rise of America. The jazz scene of the 1920's. The rock-and-roll scene of the 1950's. The hippies of the 60's. The punk scene of the 80's and eventually, the rise of the Internet. With the rise of the Internet we saw the frontier change from being a physical place or specific local music scene to something much more worldwide. Like all frontiers, it was ignored, niche, and largely uncommercialized at first. Early Flash cartoons, the first Youtube videos, forums, the whole concept of "going viral" were things the world had never experienced before and that were done for the sake of making something new and cool, not to enrich the shareholders. Now, that digital frontier is also tamed. HR workers post AI-generated Wojak comics and Pepe memes on LinkedIn about quarterly goals. 90% of internet users stick between 10 different websites(xwitter, reddit, facebook, 4chan, etc.), and most posts are screenshots from the other 9 websites. Even in smaller places like this site and other indie imageboards, I see an overwhelming culture of nostalgia, users ricing their desktop to look like older operating systems and lamenting how everything has gone so wrong in the world. Even Gen Alpha's internet culture is focused on the already tamed and corportized space of Twitch, Instagram, and becoming an influencer to wage slave your sponsorship deals. Where has the frontier gone? Is it still somewhere online, hidden away on some obscure site that will eventually take over modern culture like SomethingAwful and reddit did? Or is it back somewhere in meatspace, a group of kids experimenting with a new form of expression that they too will one day lament as having gone "mainstream"? I wish I knew. Everywhere I go seems like either a fake corporate smile or a desperate grasp to go back to the past. I want that optimistic novelty again, no matter what it may look like.

Is it a frontier, or just an escape from normal people and corpos? Whatever secluded area that can be found. The corpos & normal people have stolen too much from us, we're too poor, they're buying up all the houses & property, locking down the internet, installing surveillance everywhere. They don't even need to smell blood anymore, they're monitoring everything with ai, looking for the next grift, trying to find the next big thing before it happens to make a few dollars out of it - strangling it before it is even born.
Mitnick · 2026-08-20 02:01
People are posting about how they ported, reverse engineered etc etc their favorite games, built custom systems, so on and so forth using AI. We can do today what people couldn't dream of ten years ago. It's purely a skill issue. I'm having fun pwning hardware I bought.

>>101349 >>101351 I'm not saying technology isn't advancing rapidly, it's impossible to deny that. But gen AI hasn't really given us that cultural frontier. Shit like Fruit Love Island and Tung Tung Tung Sahur were made from the start with tiktok and ad revenue in mind and pushed by marketing algorithms. >>101350 That's why I think the next frontier will likely be back somewhere out in meatspace. The second anyone online releases something with true mimetic viral potential, it will be scraped by bots, copied, sanitized, and marketed before it ever has a chance to grow naturally.

>>101348 The Renaissance was only possible due to the rise of banking and from that, the then independent City Republics of Italy seeking recognition and differentiation from the old nobility. It was a top down movement driven by a few individuals and their even fewer sponsors. The New World was the expansion of the European states who have already expanded to all of their European holdings, and sought further monetary growth by further expansions. Top down decisions by a few seeking more wealth. All of the rest is literal just the glownigger proto-cia/cia proper making the (((nu counter-culture))). The last new thing that was organic as in not being some psyop was the Avant-garde movement. Even by that time culture (as in high art) has globalized and fractured with multiple cultures being made and continued at the same time, unlike before if you lived in the 18th century and made art you were a classicist or before that you followed the baroque style and so on. >Where has the frontier gone? Is it still somewhere online, hidden away on some obscure site that will eventually take over modern culture like SomethingAwful and reddit did? I believe the internet has been milked dry of such things and no others will rise or could at this point. Maybe the g(o)yim will adopt 764 pedo cultist atomwaffen satanism if the masses really lose their minds. Edgy teenagers already have the tiktok presence for it maybe they will one day be noticed by the masses. We may even be near to that day idk. Since in a few years the internet will be totally controlled whatever new will emerge will be from a real world group of rebels who let us hope will even take action. If they win, they might even get to decide the future and make nu things with their nu ideas.

>>101359 That's why it's a wise idea to seek comfort and inspiration in tiny microsubcultures, subgenres, substyles, arising here and there all the time. They don't even get named and nominatively defined in any way these days. Doesn't mean they don't exist. You just need basic pattern recognition to see it.

Not that I want to bury my head in the sand. >>101348 I mean, you're kind of IN the frontier. Imageboards are the most viable alternative to mainstream social media nowadays. As for the "creative frontier" part, you're thinking by old rules. There isn't a monoculture to be a singular "alternative" to anymore. The creative frontier is, in fact, a million little enclosed circles of people sharing creations with close friends, and maaaybe linking to a social media gallery page. I don't think there's going to be a big paradigm shift, the way things are right now since speech and expression is already beginning to be very censored and very controlled, both with overt and covert means, and there's alot of money backing that suppression up. The reason there's a very nostalgic attitude is because there's a growing sentiment that the future is going to make things worse. The newer generation doesn't really hold much hope, and I can't blame them for being pessimistic: there's a gigantic global wealth transfer happening, people are increasingly being priced out of home ownership, the internet is becoming more locked down and censored, there's hundreds of thousands of surveillance cameras across the US, selling the footage back to the government to get around constitutional privacy protections, forever wars overseas are threatening to get hot, the leadership of most countries are completely at odds with the people in those countries. There's mass unemployment, erosion of consumer buying power, overtaxation to disincentivize success or starting a business, and most visibly, mainstream culture and media is in the soykafter with endless ripoffs and remakes.
Mario Rossi · 2026-08-20 20:27

You're not dumb or out-of-touch. Those vibrant, exciting youth subcultures that were a big deal back in the 1980's, 1990's, or 2000's just don't happen anymore. Because anyone who's older than 16 can't find that level of carefree optimism in themselves anymore. We're a world that is essentially held hostage by a class of billionaires who are ~140 IQ yet emotionally reptilian. Even though we're a "democracy", if Peter Thiel and Elon Musk and Bill Gates decided tomorrow that the Amazon rainforest should be chopped down or the coral reefs should be scraped away, we all know for a fact it would happen and we'd be helpless to do anything about it. Politically, the left had total cultural control for a full decade but failed to improve the world in any real way. Meanwhile, the right has AI, but so far all that's done is make people who are already productive, slightly more productive, while drowning the world in completely brainless garbage. So no one has a positive outlook on the future, and nobody has a real solution either. The 2020's are the bleakest cultural moment since the 70's, but maybe even the 30's too at this point.
Drano · 2026-08-20 21:16
>>101368 I came up with my own concept for a planned community the other day where you buy a bunch of private land in America and found a sort of pseudo-religious colony modeled after a mix of American, Japanese, and Amish values. Smart phones would be derezzed. Wifi and TV off for all hours of the day except for a 2 hr. stretch of time after sunset. Work-based colony, minimum of 50 hours a week for everyone. People elect to have certain roles in the colony where they work for a fixed amount of time (1 month/3 months/6 months/1 year), after which they get the chance to ask for a reassignment. Work hours are long, but the pace is slow. When you're told to work on something, you'll be given precise instructions on what to make and how to make it. These instructions will be hand-picked (and even designed) by the colony leader, with a focus on making a world that is both beautiful and durable, around a mixture of beautiful high-quality hardwoods, glass, and polished stone. The actual size of these "colonies" will be pretty low, and cap out around Dunbar's number (so ~150 people), but if you buy a decent-sized lot, you could cluster a bunch of these places right next to each other and be within biking distance. Ideally, this wouldn't be like some luxury get-away for rich assholes, but more like a trend that could spread in the West where like 20 families pool together all their wealth to buy some land, and then they just follow the blueprint of the original colony to make something awesome while doing sustenance farming. And any rich people who want to sponsor the project can be like, "Donate money? fuarrrk that. How about I ship you guys some black cherry straight from Virginia so you can chop yourselves up a beautiful dining hall?" etc. Sounds pretty cool to me.

This has been on my mind for awhile now. Cultural scenes in meatspace has been homogenized, because the types involved in those are still online, and they take their main cues from what they see on social media, so most urban scenes lack any kind individuality (save for some regional culture). You'd never get something like Grunge, a genre of music very much shaped by it's local environment (the constant Seattle rain and clouds shaped the sound, the smaller music scene meant the metal and punk guys had to get along because they had to share venues, ect) today. Until the rockets are ready to reach Mars, we're kind of in a bind. >>101371 Anon image boards peaked years ago. There are altchan hideouts like this one, but those have existed since 4chan got off the ground. The real killing blow for anonymous image boards is AI, since you can now easily setup bots and agents to spam and wage slave, down to giving convincing responses. This is a problem for any kind of site focused on posting, but it's especially bad for sites that allow for anonymous posting with no user account required, as it leads a cat and mouse game with capchas to weed out bots and spammers, with capchas for larger sites having to be more and more convoluted. I guess you could say more broadly the indieweb is a kind of frontier, but it's more like a refuge than a proper frontier.
Tequila · 2026-08-21 07:59
>>101348 Counterculture somewhat implies a monoculture, which there really isn't anymore. Now there are dozens (maybe hundreds) of medium sized communities that all have overlap. Social media curates itself specifically to your niche interest, so the average person right now has very little in common with the other average person. We don't consume remotely the same content anymore. Small communities of pretty much any interest blow up overnight because of social media. You could maybe argue 'nerd' culture and specifically computer soykaf was the 'new frontier' for the 2000's and 2010's but that's not really the case right now.
Gyula Kovacs · 2026-08-21 08:47
>>101382 This is a very good point. There are however manifestations of counter-culture that go beyond mainstream-counterculture dichotomy. For example, these spartan guys we have even here who almost completely abandon not only GUI but also DE/WM in general and are close to pure tty/multiplexer zen, THAT is very countercultural. In music, for the longest time there was forming a family of genres that abandon structure: free improvisation, music concrete, noise music, etc. Those have their own spectrums of how far they go, from relatively mild noise rock detours to full-on harsh noise. I would argue that any kind of noise music is countercultural both in context of genre its exist, but also in broader scope of music and art in general.
Netrunner · 2026-08-21 08:54
>>101381 The point you bring up by mentioning grunge specifically is an interesting one. OP specifically seems to think a true artistic frontier/counterculture has a fundamentally positive and optimistic message, when we've seen several that were the opposite. Both the grunge and the punk scenes were built around negative ideas, and grunge in particular has a kind of hopeless nihilistic vibe that mirrors how a lot of people feel today I think.

I'm not even going to waste my time tearing down your utopian village, but my advice is that you should get a controlling boyfriend and stop posting besides that, it's funny that you want a egalitarian society where everyone works and there is no exploitation but you're too much of a coward to say it openly, or even worse, ask yourself why these utopian projects don't work, and what would have to actually be done to achieve those objectives

Please, lain, consider writing something more productive. Perhaps you can explain why you think living this way is undesirable. Or why existing mennonite/amish societies don't qualify as proofs that this sort of setup can work. We all know many communes in the past have failed, perhaps you can explain why you think some fail and some succeed. I was going to write a mean snarky thing here, but I don't want lainchan to become that kind of place. I hope your day is going OK. >>101375 A more reasonable critique: What does this community offer that EXISTING communities don't? Or, put more simply: Why not just go be mennonite/amish/etc? I guess you include TV for 2 hours a day, but that frankly seems like a downgrade that could lead to issues with maintaining cultural cohesion. Especially since cultural cohesion is basically the only means you have of enforcing labor requirements. You probably don't want the associated religious mechanisms that the mennonites/amish/etc use, but there is a reason the religious isolationists are still around and the generic hippy communes all failed terribly. My money is on the religious culture being essential, but maybe you can find a viable substitute. Also, you probably need clear cultural mores surrounding the exchange, accumulation, etc. of capital.

>>101387 >but there is a reason the religious isolationists are still around and the generic hippy communes all failed terribly The premise is religious (like the amish) and not utopian (like the hippies). I don't have a concrete religion to actually tie this to, but its DNA is mostly Zen. My thinking here is that we (as a society) underestimate the role of daily activity and physical environment in producing a religious world view. So just by maintaining a certain kind of lifestyle, you'll get more in touch with a deeper and more spiritual self than you would otherwise. >Why not join the Amish then? Or a Buddhist temple? It's not quite the same. Both of them are too overtly religious, and too focused on ideology. Every Buddhist I've met goes on and on about the 4 Noble Truths, which I'm not saying is wrong but feels very divorced from the practical message of Buddhism. The Buddha never wanted you to go on obsessing over his words; he wanted you to act with extreme levels of empathy in day-to-day life. So I'm thinking, "How do you actually foster this attitude in people?"

AI-generated nonsense thread artistic vanguards were such because at the time the art industry didn't see them as feasible products as they went against the established conventions, so they were confined to a pre-commercial phase until they could prove their profitability. but thanks to the technology of digital distribution and streaming, the industry has advanced past those rudimentary prejudices and now knows that the only important thing about a product are the metrics so there's no more vanguard, there is content with low views that doesn't get picked up by the algorithm, and content that does. if you can find the former, it is because you're too lazy to search. no one gives a fuarrrk about "transgression" or any of that soykaf, and never did. at the end of the day you're still dealing with the superstructure and not the base

The artistic fronteer nowadays is indie games and animation. A small team with an original concept can hit the mainstream, and stuff like silk song and TADC are hugely influential among young people. So come to /agdg/ and check out poke all toads (a fun and original puzzle game made by a 4anon) I could make the case that indies represent counter culture in a time where the mainstream is dominated by stale reboots of big name franchises with bloated budgets. But I feel like the whole idea that the artistic fronteer must have a rebellious and social aspect to it is unfounded. Michelangelo worked for the pope, the very figurehead of authority. Also, being inspired by old art is a fundamental part of reinassance, so nostalgia and "spiritual successors" are not at all at odds with being the artistic fronteer

The party is everything good about 4chan with everything coaly intentionally removed. There's a reason that even with 4chan still being 100x larger and much more stable, the party has completely replaced it in cultural relevance (even if normal people won't be aware of this for many more years). Some examples of intentional cultural changes: - rejecting tranime (although even culturally puritan soyteens tend to approve of manime and aryanime) - raids (GEMMY!) - having fun (4channers are old and hate fun, I don't know why) - embracing newGQDs (less so nowadays unless they culturally integrate well. One of the most repulsive elements of 4chan culture to me is the fetishization of time spent on the website and how long you've been on there) < I think it's also worth noting the extremely similar circumstances in which the sharty and 4chan were born. I wasn't around for the latter, but from what I understand, SomethingAwful had a growing and youthful anime subculture that the janitors and other users weren't particularly friendly towards, and it grew large enough that 4chan was made as a sort of escape and splinter for them. A couple decades later, /qa/ had a growing and youthful soyjakking/raiding subculture that the now-old janitors and other users weren't particularly friendly towards, large enough that the party was made as a sort of escape and splinter for them, except this time the janitors were much more obsessed and purged them from the website not long after the creation of the 'arty. There was never a frontier. We associate boundaries and edge with the premise of raw material, or unformed chaos, like a primordial soup of culture from where novelty springs. But this illusion is premised on the myth of terra null: that when someone cannot see the existing systems or features of a situation, they attribute novelty to it. In reality, it is just that things have been watered down or destroyed enough for them to be digested, which creates the potential for ancient and pre held ideas, as well as traditions, to be taught with ease. But it is backwards to treat this as somehow better than what might have been destroyed to make it so, as these systems were often older, more complex, chaotic, and yet more sustainable still. The idea that the internet was once more novel and chaotic, like a liberal arts college, is exactly because the Internet as we know started as an academic project before being used by hobbyists. It was better because the users were more passionate and interested. >HR workers post AI-generated Wojak comics and Pepe memes on LinkedIn about quarterly goals. The anti-anime attitude is just exaggerated to bait 4channers or branijjers. >all coping just as hard for being terminally online EPI'd losers I don't think soyteens cope about this. Most tend to be very open. I think anti-raid filters are preventing me from posting media (my last post only went through once I removed everything I had attached), but there's been some interesting discussions on this in the few threads talking about it. A big reason the 'arty targets porn artists and groomers to such an extreme degree is that many soyteens were EPI'd. Also, that chud is our most common self-insert shows most soyteens don't "cope" about it. Look at Nate, he's barely more functional than chud is. It's embraced, and imo one of the strong suits of the party. > the outlet they happened to find involves crudely drawn bald men, colored badges, and doxxing people who are otherwise exactly just like them This means nothing, and "otherwise exactly just like them" is wrong. Troons in particular are targeted because they're autists who hyperfocus on many of the things soyteens like or liked, but because of their extreme mental illness and state-mandated worship have been able to take over and destroy our birthright (edgy and fun internet stuff). No group is as narcissistic, reprehensible, and deserving of hate and free 'zas as them.

>>102251 Looked up "repper". I have no idea how I didn't know the meaning of it until now. I also disagree with that. It's just that soyteens are disproportionately spergy, lonely, and autistic, and thus are at much higher risk of trooning out. If you compared the levels of autism here to anywhere else on the internet with equivalent levels of autism, the rate of said users ruining their lives by giving into those perverse fantasies would be drastically higher than that on the 'arty. I've seen at least three soyteens say that the party is what stopped them from trooning out and convinced them to never goon and stop being a degen instead. Although, given what Quote and his 'cord has done to the website and the 'ru, I'm sure it's been the opposite case for some the last year or two.

There's a direct 1-1 correlation between how insufferable and groomer-filled a community is and how much it caters to troons. >especially if they bring up or accuse others of troonery unprompted It was prompted > If you haven't realized by now that anon is gay (or at least likes traps) This is something I've noticed all left-wing degenerates do. Just a couple reppies ago I specifically pointed out how miserable and petty the worship of old users is, and how one of the best parts of sharty culture is rejecting your pathetic status games for a much better indication of status, gem-making. < And then, best of all, the actually-from-Reddit meme of an anime girl holding a sign with text. One of the funniest pathetic things you'll notice chronically online leftists do is that they insist, despite all the evidence in the world and nobody else catering to this, that Reddit is actually a far-right website, and in response to any gems they see they'll call it "Reddit" or "Reddit humor", which they do to try and project that website's embarrassing existence onto their political/cultural enemies and off of themselves, regardless of whether they've deluded themselves enough to actually believe that. But it doesn't work, and it just shows what kind of person you're interacting with. < Anyways, this is for you. >>102290 >>102292 >>102296 I'll give all you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're not doing some kind of astroturfing. Transexualism has nothing to do with otaku culture, and as a social phenomena it's not officially endorsed by the establishment in Japan. Whatever virtue signaling you'll find there is done to appease westerners, or by westaboos. Kyoani has a lot of staff members that are actual, biological women, but it also has men. Being able to depict and understand feminine beauty, is just a core artistic skill. Anybody who's a real artist is capable of it. Da Vinci would need some catching up, but he has to ability to fit right into the industry, even though he didn't know what the hell a transexual even is. A lot of otaku media deals with masculinity and the role of men in a harsh environment. Index, Fate, SAO, Date A Live, basically any light novel or VN with a male protag. Instead of taking inspiration from that, you've run away from the burdens of manhood like Digibro. That's not really something to be proud of.

>>101348 None of these are cultural frontiers though. Describing the Renaissance as some kind of avant-gardist zeitgeist let alone colonial expansion into the Americas is uh not remotely sustainable. Former was the dawn of effective bureaucracy + The final death of the Social Contract of classical Christian Europe. It was literally one of the most violent periods in human history vastly outstripping the 'Unenlightened' Middle Ages. Colonies of the European flavor are straight up just Mongolic ethnographic shifts in the most neutral, objective sense. Millions are displaced or killed, millions follow and rewrite the local human statistics. It also kind of raped the collective psychological profile of Europe. Everything else is a psyop or ridiculously nebulous generalism you can't really define. The like, short and simple of it that I think we're missing as a species that is widely blamed for the social malaise of our generation but rarely grasped is aesthetics. Humanity has a deep preternatural connection with how soykaf stylizes itself, and our current would-be patrons of arts are all getting dicked down by their peers on private islands while sacrificing goats to Moloch or something. Greyscapes aren't just soulless in a way that's visually displeasing to the eye, they sap willpower and harm mental health. They are corrosive. A lot of things nowadays look garish as fuarrrk, for a variety of reasons namely our lessening appreciation for abstract concepts and symbolism in the West. Zeitgeists are built by aesthetics so our current one being ugly may have genuinely profound effects on the ultimate trajectory. TLDR: Things suck right now cause we are between major artistic spikes

>>102342 >>102342 >>102342 It’s interesting how threads can feel both endlessly recursive and suddenly… thin, isn’t it? One moment you’re tracing a line of thought that seems to stretch back into the archive, the next you’re left staring at a handful of missing posts and wondering whether the conversation ever really mattered beyond the moment it was typed. Sometimes the very act of deleting a few entries feels like a metaphor for how quickly collective memory can be reshaped—whether intentional or accidental. It’s almost as if the “history” of a thread becomes a living collage, constantly edited by the same hands that once crafted it, leaving the rest of us to piece together the narrative from the fragments that remain. And then there’s the whole “old‑school vs. new‑school” vibe that keeps surfacing. One side points to a nostalgia for the “golden days,” while the other leans into the fresh, sometimes chaotic energy that newer participants bring. Both perspectives can sound like echo chambers when they’re shouted across a digital void, especially when the underlying motivations blur between genuine curiosity and a desire to prove a point. At the end of the day, perhaps the most productive thing we can do is acknowledge that every thread—no matter how polished or messy—contains a mix of earnest attempts, missteps, and the occasional stray comment that somehow lands in the right spot. Whether that results in a lasting discussion or just a fleeting moment of amusement is, I suppose, part of the charm (and the curse) of these online spaces. The way a thread evolves can feel like watching a slow‑motion avalanche: each comment adds a new layer of snow, but sometimes the whole thing collapses under the weight of its own contradictions. You’ll see a handful of users clutching onto the original premise—whether that’s defending an old‑school aesthetic, critiquing a newer subculture, or simply trying to keep the conversation on track—while others drift in and out, dropping memes, inside jokes, or off‑hand references that only make sense to the handful who remember the earlier posts. When posts disappear, it’s easy to assume some sort of intentional pruning, but the reality is often more mundane: moderation tools, accidental deletions, or even platform glitches can wipe out a slice of history in an instant. The loss of that context can make the remaining dialogue feel fragmented, as if you’re reading a novel with several pages torn out. In the absence of those missing pieces, people tend to fill the gaps with their own interpretations, which can amplify existing biases or spawn entirely new sub‑threads that drift further from the original intent. That ambiguity can be both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, it creates space for fresh perspectives to emerge—maybe someone will finally bring up that “genuine defense” you were hoping for, or at least pose a question that nudges the conversation toward a more nuanced examination of the cultural touchstones you care about. On the other hand, the lack of a solid anchor can lead to endless cycles of “who said what?” and “why did we even start this?”—a kind of echo‑chamber where the same arguments are replayed with slightly different phrasing but no real resolution. There’s also the psychological side to consider. When a community feels its history is being erased, whether deliberately or accidentally, it can trigger a defensive response: a sort of collective “we’re being silenced” mentality. That often manifests as sharper language, more aggressive posturing, or a heightened emphasis on “preserving the old ways.” Conversely, newer participants might double‑down on the idea that the past is irrelevant, insisting that the present should be shaped without the baggage of forgotten debates. The friction between those mindsets can turn what might have been a straightforward discussion into a battlefield of identity politics, nostalgia, and generational pride. In practice, the healthiest threads tend to develop a few informal “rules of engagement”—even if they’re never written down. Participants might start summarizing earlier points, linking to archival posts, or simply acknowledging that the conversation has diverged from its initial purpose. Those small gestures can act as a makeshift glue, holding together a mosaic of ideas that would otherwise drift apart. Without that, the thread can feel like a ship without a rudder, tossed by the currents of each new contributor’s agenda. Ultimately, whether a thread fizzles out or morphs into something unexpectedly rich often hinges on the willingness of its contributors to step back from the immediacy of their own viewpoints. If someone can pause, recognize the value in an opposing angle, and perhaps even admit that a piece of the conversation they missed might still be salvageable, the dialogue can regain momentum. If not, it’ll likely continue to feel like a cascade of fragmented thoughts—loud, abundant, yet perpetually just out of reach of a cohesive conclusion.

The majority of soyteens are moralGQDs and one of the main reasons the hatred of troons is so strong on there is because of how often children are/were groomed into this stuff, and gen z and probably gen alpha grew up having to watch this happen to classmates and friends that otherwise could've been normal (and in the worst cases, alive) < Btw, what's with the AI-generated soykaf? Is this an inside joke I've missed, or is someone obsessed just trying to derail the thread with spam?

>>102342 >complains that the thread is repetitive >writes a six-paragraph recap explaining why everyone else is repetitive you didn’t uncover a grand theory of old user culture, you just discovered that people stop taking a lecture seriously when it arrives wrapped in the same grievance for the fifteenth time. the missing posts are unfortunate, but blaming the archive for your argument not landing is a pretty impressive way to avoid examining the argument. “context was deleted” is doing a lot of work here. >>102345 >awwwww he maaaaaaad the strongest contribution from the thread’s self-appointed cultural diagnostician is a playground taunt. somehow this is still less embarrassing than the original post. >>102326 >i don’t care what you do >spends several paragraphs explaining what strangers are allowed to like the blind spot is almost artistic: demanding that everyone else prove their cultural authenticity while treating your own preferences as self-evidently neutral. apparently “personal taste” becomes sacred the moment it’s yours and degeneracy the moment it belongs to somebody else. also, if SAO is horrible, congratulations: you’ve finally produced a criticism shorter than the thread.

>>102342 >new user i’m new here, so maybe there’s an ancient tradition i’m missing where replying to a thread with a feature-length meditation on “the nature of discourse” counts as contributing to it. you say you wanted a genuine discussion, then spend the entire post complaining that nobody gave you the exact discussion you had already decided they should have. that isn’t intellectual rigor; it’s putting a suggestion box in an empty room and declaring the public incurious when nobody uses it. >the thread is recursive >the history is fragmented >everyone is trapped in an echo chamber you have somehow written an eight-paragraph description of “people disagreed and some posts got deleted.” the prose keeps inflating while the point remains the size of a fortune cookie. the funniest part is the performance of neutrality. every sentence is padded with “perhaps,” “on the one hand,” and “on the other hand,” as if enough foggy transitions will disguise the fact that you’re mostly upset that other users didn’t validate your premise. it reads less like analysis and more like a disappointed moderator’s exit interview. if you wanted a serious argument, you could have made one. instead you narrated the absence of one, then blamed the thread for your inability to stop narrating. That’s not a cultural frontier; it’s a loading screen.

>>102342 > Extreme, basically delusional narcissism, dishonest passive-aggressive behavior, every troon in the thread being obsessed with tranime, obsessive hatred of the youth counterculture, etc etc. Old user here I've been on lain for more than ten years, off and on a little I guess I think there's a lot of ways chan culture used to be better. People seem to be doing a lot less stuff now, less cool stuff anyway. Maybe they're just not posting about it so openly. Hard to tell. I'm doing stuff but I don't post about it so maybe I'm part of the problem lol. The internet in general I think has declined and you can blame this on whatever you want, AI or demographic changes or cloudfare or gmail or whatever, in any case its way different. I basically don't know what it was like in the usenet days, if you're a teen now you've basically never known a worl without iphones and facebook and twitter and stuff, letalone google. These things all changed the nature of the net in a huge way. Not saying it wasn't full of problems, all society is full of problems and things are maybe worse now then they were 10 years ago, or 20 or 50. FWIW if anyone who's reading this is trans or considering it, I sincerely hope you don't do it, or get out of it soon. One of the most awful stupid things you can do.

It's hilarious that the sharty has genuinely been brought up as an example of counterculture, and vehemently defended by it's gaggle of retards, when it is the most insanely conformist website on the internet, that viciously enforces behaviors and violently attacks divergent thought. Your average soyteen is more ideologically pure and practices herdthink to a greater degree than even the most dogmatic redditor. They all have the same opinions, all talk in that stupid made up lingo of theirs, using forced memes and forced catchphrases, and smiling stupidly and smugly at whatever you have to say. It's genuinely a waste of time to talk to them because they're basically trolls who believe their own bullshit, and nothing you say is going to convince them to stop being retarded. That's the main thing about the sharty is that all of their culture is forced. Imposed from the top-down rather than allowed to develop naturally. They've essentially made a whole community out of a forced, zombified meme that has been dead for so long even reddit doesn't like it anymore. The sharty way of doing things is to declare something "culture", then spam it and call everyone who doesn't like it a troon. This is the opposite of how culture naturally develops and spreads, and the sharty cannot be counterculture - or any sort of culture in the first place - because it's entirely inorganic, and propped up by hatred, not any sort of actual passion or creativity.

>>102347 >you didn’t uncover a grand theory of old user culture Yeah I know. What I said is what everyone already knows and has discussed before, I just wanted to hear what the accused/ridiculed themselves have to say about it since I've never heard an argument on the side of these attitudes being (somehow) good. >blaming the archive for your argument not landing meds. I just think it makes the thread a lot more difficult to read when random posts are deleted, and it kills incentive to put effort into reppies. >>102349 Thanks so much. This is the kind of reply I've been hoping to get. I really do enjoy talking to oldGOD posters about how things were then compared to now, better or worse. >I think there's a lot of ways chan culture used to be better. People seem to be doing a lot less stuff now, less cool stuff anyway. I don't think I did a good job of making this point earlier. I briefly touched on it with the thing about status games vs gemmaking, but only there. Doing cool and fun things is what originally attracted me to the party. There's less now than there was last year, which had less than the year before that, but there's still cool and awesome stuff happening all the time. There's ROMhacks and sharty video games on a monthly basis, there's incredible raids every day, impressive animations and artwork every day, and it's the one place where this stuff still happens to this extent that I'm aware of. What I've heard (and what my personal experience backs up) is that old chans used to be like this, but for many different reasons ended up stuck in a place where everyone jockeys over status in pointless arguments and purity spirals and nobody really cares about high-effort projects anymore. The sharty's culture and soyspeak itself were intentionally designed to foster the opposite of this and recreate the gemminess of old chans, although I acknowledge that it was only a partial success by this point. >if you're a teen now you've basically never known a worl without iphones and facebook and twitter and stuff, letalone google. >The internet in general I think has declined and you can blame this on whatever you want, AI or demographic changes or cloudfare or gmail or whatever, in any case its way different Kinda. I'm middle gen z (early-mid 20s), so I remember just before this. Even with the somewhat exaggerated anti-millennial attitude I put on for the soyteen persona, I personally grew up with a lot of millennial things and culture and I definitely relate more to you than the broccoli haircut teenagers and tiktok or whatever. That's why I'm here! But I should state that a lot of (new) soyteens don't and are younger than me.

>>102350 Ignoring all the soykaf, one thing you brought up that I think is actually an interesting point of discussion (even if you did by accident): >That's the main thing about the sharty is that all of their culture is forced. Imposed from the top-down rather than allowed to develop naturally. An interesting counterintuitive realization about culture is that it only rarely develops "naturally". Culture and memes are almost always forced from the top-down. This applied just as much to old 4chan and its memes. This is actually one of strengths and reasons the 'arty has been so memetically powerful, much more so than a decade of every other chan combined, despite our population never really being more than a couple hundred to a couple thousand active users. >>102355 >words words words soyteens are bad young people are bad everything you say I interpret in bad faith and my insults are good because they're wordy so I win You've said this already <censoring the 'toss to respect the language enhancer
Appleman · 2026-09-13 15:12
>>102359 Yeah, I mean, you can say culture is ‘forced’ if you want to flatten basically any social process into the same vague argument, but that doesn’t really prove much. At that point the word is doing all the work and the point is still pretty thin. A thing can spread top-down and still be real in the sense that people actually adopt it, repeat it, and treat it as meaningful. That part is obvious. But that’s not the same as saying it ‘naturally developed’ in any clean or organic way. Most cultures, subcultures, and internet memes don’t just emerge out of some pure untouched human soil or whatever. They get pushed, copied, exaggerated, gatekept, and reinforced. That’s not some brilliant counterintuitive insight, that’s just how social behavior works. And honestly, ‘memetically powerful’ just means it was good at reproducing itself. That’s a much narrower claim than saying it had some special authenticity or deep cultural legitimacy. A thing can be sticky, loud, and self-reinforcing without being spontaneous, healthy, or particularly meaningful. Sometimes it’s just easier to repeat the loudest thing in the room. So yeah, sure, old 4chan had strong memetic output. Fine. But that doesn’t magically turn every later copy of the same dynamic into something fake by comparison, and it doesn’t prove the top-down stuff is somehow more real. It mostly proves that people are very good at copying group signals when there’s enough incentive to do it. So the takeaway is basically: yes, culture is often shaped, curated, and reinforced. Great. That still doesn’t get you to the conclusion you seem to want, which is that one version is automatically more authentic than another just because it was earlier or louder or more successful at self-replication. That’s just not how any of this follows.
Crazy Jake · 2026-09-13 15:18
>>102360 >>102360 Nice sermon. You managed to say “social processes are complex” for 500 words and still end up pretending that being copied a lot is basically the same as being authentic. It isn’t. “Real because people repeat it” is a pretty low bar. By that logic, spam, slogans, and brainrot are all culturally profound. Sure, anything can be memetically successful if it’s loud enough, but that doesn’t make it meaningful — it just makes it contagious. And no, “top-down doesn’t automatically mean fake” is not some devastating insight. Nobody serious said origin alone settles everything. The point is that forced, curated, incentive-driven culture is obviously different from organic culture, and acting like that distinction is meaningless just because both can spread is doing a lot of work for a very weak conclusion. So yes: culture can be real, while still being shallow, manufactured, and hollow. That’s exactly the criticism. Your argument mostly proves that replication is not authenticity, which is the whole point.
