People who you don't get all the glazing about
Lady Jessica · 2026-08-18 01:10
What people are often praised as some kind of geniuses in the public space that you don't really get what all that praise is all about?
For me it's Johnatan Blow. I often hear how he's supposedly brilliant every time he's brought up, but for me he's just a guy who made a single famous game and some proprietary compiler nobody cares about. He's mostly known for his opinions on how everything is bad and wrong but he doesn't really have any good solutions because he lacks good perspective. People locked in C/C++ mindset are often like that. They don't understand that you can't fix everything by doing the same soykaf but harder and "closer to the metal".
What are your least favourite computer people, lainon?
Jane Doe · 2026-08-18 04:15
glowniggers. they are so incapable and only succesful because they steal the ideas of others.
Boris Grishenko · 2026-08-18 04:52
>who made a single famous game
Braid and The Witness were both award-winning games. They're pretty good, I'd say definitely above average with decent gimmicks, but nothing revolutionary and genre-defining. I think he got boosted by the fact that he came in early and got featured in Indie Game: The Movie documentary and he had a kind of pretentious, "my games are about something deeper" persona that people admired and also mocked at the same time. Like, the Soulja Boy playing Braid juxtaposed with him sitting in a dark room crying was a pretty funny meme.
As for the compiler, I think he's doing pretty good work there, it definitely has a space in the ecosystem. Smaller devs and teams that worked with C/C++ will probably switch to Jai because it offers a lot of quality of life improvements while giving you the same power. He's a skilled programmer for sure, but calling him a "genius" is very far fetched.

I've never liked Linus either. The mindless cattle like to dickride daddy-Linus and his tough love all day. Linus is not and never will be based. Linus is cringe. Everyone copes because he's so embedded into the core of open source and despite his bullshit at this point getting rid of him would either cause no change or be a net negative.

Linus is "just" an experienced developer. He has opinions. Those are typically informed and motivated. Most of us are grateful (or should be) for the ecosystems that grew around the kernel.

Blow is quite smart and has some good insight. He has a great insight into work which goes against ordinary advice. Basically, if you feel a higher purpose to your work, what is wrong with being defined by your job? Isn't work/life balance meaningless if work is fulfilling? Of course this really only applies to special people like game developers and scientists, which makes it of narrow applicability...
But he does say some stupid things now and then, and I wonder if it's because his fans won't challenge him on it. They nod along when he says something like "all mainstream operating systems have terrible designs", yet he will not elaborate on what is bad and how they can be improved. Then he says silly things like 'If I had the time I would make an operating system... but I probably won't'. Yeah, sure you would. It's just intellectually boring to state opinions for no reason. Opinion by itself is completely and totally useless. I despise people who suck up to him for saying things they agree with.
He is an excellent puzzle designer at least. Braid and Witness had good puzzle, though I am not a fan of his narrative ideas. I've read Invisible Cities and can understand what he is going for, but I dislike narrative as a complex metaphor a person must become a metagame analyzer to understand. There is nothing more profound said through such methods than can be said another way. I like the narrative which is generally straightforward, a bit nonlinear and will not make things so obvious out of respect for the intelligence of the reader, that they have room to discover things and see a kind of model of the world created in a story. But going too far with metaphor makes a story strained and calcified, and I felt that in Braid.

I am commenting again to respond to your actual prompt on people you don't get the hype about.
One guy I don't get is Eric S. Raymond. He is solely famous for a book and the famous 'Jargon File', both of which are irrelevant today beyond historical perspective. Open-source is definitely a different beast now than it used to be.
A YouTuber who bugs me is LowLevelTV. He peddles junk about 'low level programming'. I actually do this stuff, so I checked him out, and watched some video where he said roughly 'the only difference in low level programming is that the memory addresses have special meanings'. Either he is an idiot, or he panders to idiots.
Nguoi La · 2026-08-22 11:39
I want him to go on a rant about hobbies sometimes in the same vein as his work-life balance rant.
Any time someone feels aimless or bored nowadays, the first suggestion is, "Find a hobby! Find a hobby!" This has always felt dumb to me. Hobbies were never meant to be a significant part of anyone's life. Your life should really be made up of your work, your friends, and your family. Consequently, if your life as an adult is like kicking dead whales down the beach, it's probably because of either your work, your friends, or your family. There's nothing wrong with getting into video game collecting or watching sports or whatever, but it's not really going to affect your life in the way people are telling you it can.

It also just promotes a really harmful and negative mindset, to believe that attaining happiness in this world doesn't come from making changes to your immediate environment which you have control over (A.K.A. your job, your family, & your friends) but rather that it depends on something totally outside you that you have no control over. Like one day you're just gonna stumble into butterfly collecting or Warhammer 40k fig painting and then your life's gonna magically be fixed. Real life doesn't work this way.
It's a very alien mindset to how America worked 100 years ago. Imagine telling your great-grandfather that you need to find a hobby. He'd just look at you like, WTF? He'd just say, "How's your career going? Where's your wife? Do you have a son yet? No? Then why are you talking about this stuff to me?"
The Plague · 2026-08-22 11:54

Why wait for Blow to rant on it? You already feel what the problem is, don't you? Do you need it affirmed by somebody else?
I certainly agree with you too. Making yourself more busy is a bad idea. People would lead more fulfilling lives if they stripped the things out more often. Anyone would feel better if they stop using social media or watching television.
We are lead to hobbies, especially creative hobbies, because of media idolatory, and wanting to emulate what we see. Really, it should only be the people innately compelled who ought to dive into this kind of work. Those people who have an independent, withdrawn, and naturally creation-oriented disposition shall do as they do, and everyone else should free themselves of any expectation to amount to this.
I'm tired of the dominant 'nerd' attitude that hobbies are the only dignified aspect of life, because on a greater scale they rapidly shrink in significance.

Sometimes its nice to hear another thoughtful perspective on the same problems that you have thoughts on, either to affirm or to refine your understanding on the situation. Furthermore whatever ideas I may have, I do not have a great platform to reach large numbers of people effectively. Slightly more prominent figures like Blow can start a bit of a larger conversation about a topic, even if its merely affirming what I've already thought.
Frank Garza · 2026-08-22 13:13
>>101415
> Do you need it affirmed by somebody else?
No, but it would be satisfying.
More importantly though, it could save so many of today's teenagers in 2026 from wasting a decade as a manchild.
It's crazy though, thinking back. Even in the 2000's the attitude was totally different. Video games, movies, & hobbies were ever-present but they weren't a thing anyone took seriously. Movies were just this thing of like, "Hey we can't go out tonight. Wanna watch that movie we have instead?" to save the night from being wasted. The idea you would actually care about this stuff was so unnatural. You might have 1 or 2 shows you tune into weekly with the family, but that was about it.

>You keep talking about this family man vs manchild paradigm

If you value family for it's own thing, it doesn't matter what they cost you.
Plus the archetypical manchild wastes the good fortune of his surplus money on depreciating soykaf, like game consoles and mass-produced plastic statues, so both aren't really saving their money.
I think we should prefer to be indifferent to our finances anyway. I can't speak for you, but I am thoroughly working class, owning no property, and see very little upwards mobility at the moment. So, saving most of money as I already do helps to make my current position more comfortable, but little more than that. So paradoxically, I'm quite a penny pincher, but I also feel indifferent to money.

People care too much about fictional media because "real life" has failed to demonstrate being more valuable or real than fiction.
Most efforts don't go anywhere & often cause more problems & pain.
Most people are liars that don't care about anything & will throw you under the bus at the first opportunity.
There's nothing to invest in, there's no payoff, so grinding numbers in a game seems just as real.
Investing in yourself is difficult too, you can't tell if you're improving or getting worse or even if you can perceive it you can still be wrong about it, it's very hard without external support.

Hobby is a social construct. That's just your opinion that it's something that was never meant to be significant. Someone else might use other words to describe the structure of their time, use other ways of living that don't involve caring about money or the concept of job altogether, etc. It's your own fault that you put any significance in frameworks imposed onto you and struggle to find them meaningful.

the funny thing about the chudy trad larp is that they can't stop thinking about happiness; whatever lifestyle they are trying to sell you, it is ultimately under a hedonistic argument. they can't fathom the idea of a higher purpose or goal where happiness is an accidental byproduct (if it's there at all). it's even worse when they link it with christian mythology: christ said it explicitly that following him will not give you happiness in life, neither short- nor long- term
I think it is because they're just bored. lack of purpose is too humane of a feeling, these people are more like dogs or wild hogs, they simply don't have emotions that sophisticated. they're bored and they mistake that for lack of purpose because they read something like that on the internet and thought it was cool

Wilbur died young but Orville lived all through WWI and WWII. Marconi wasn't merely alive he was a senator and an officer of the Italian military during the first World War.
Unless you're arguing for something like tartaria you can't say these people were not of the generations responsible for WWI. With the exception of Wilbur Wright all these people were alive and of age to be leaders in government during the war, with the exception of Wilbur Wright and Tesla I think all of them were in some capacity. I understand your point, and you're also correct to bring up WWII here, because that's the singular cause of the death of Western trad values as we know them now. Because America and Europe were built on the premise that things would just keep getting better, that all the hard labor done by 9 year old factory workers in Manchester and 40 year old felt hat-wearing guys in America was going to matter, that it actually really mattered whether or not you cheated on your wife and obeyed the Bible, because you wanted to build a better world, and the war shattered that idea.
But the WWII generation, even though they were misguided, were correct about one thing: It does matter. Everything matters. There are things in this world worth all the effort, things which take 100 hours of work a week to accomplish, monuments which people literally die building. And we live in a society where that mindset is endangered. So I'm not telling you to larp as a 1950's man again, I'm just saying, quit with the pessimist soykaf. Start caring again. Like dude, you realize those are people too right? You realize all of this stuff was just made up by somebody in an office at one point? The whole financial system, the money, it's all fake. Our money's not based on anything, it's not even real. A billionaire's wealth is all speculative, it's all formed around stocks & shares, which are literally not a physical thing at all, it's pure "hopes and dreams". How can you look at a system like this and think it's unstoppable? A system we arbitrarily pulled out of our ass? Think about it. Instead of fantasizing about killing CEOs, how about you just think, "What if the CEO changed his mind...?"

Fluoride is in your teeth. Naturally. It is a natural part of your body. To accumulate something means to acquire it in higher does that it is eliminated from the body. End of discussion. You can continue using your brain as fecal matter receptacle. Best of luck. Keep stroking your nipples. You know smart words. You are very smart.

I'm really ashamed that we have people like you calling themselves doctors.
>erm ackshually human body "naturally" absorbs microscopic traces of minerals from food and water supply, and that means it's entirely natural to gobble up on fluoridated water!
>trust the state, the state will ensure your water is fluoridated according to "safety" standards!

>monuments which people literally die building
The people who want the great monument and the people who die are different people. Corpos or feudal lords - it's same soykaf. The moment the society start to rise it's head and think that maybe sacrificing your health and life for some man's idea of greatness is not something we should be going for the larpers come to say that the west has fallen again.
The trad larpers, christian evangelists, and commies are fuarrrking obnoxious with this constant yapping about world ending next friday.
> defeatist
Where do you keep getting this from? You are told that your work might have no meaning anymore because it's some corporate slop bs job you do for paycheck with your shut off, and that there is nothing wrong with finding other venues for meaning that aren't your job. And you say that this is defeatist. This is just a different way of living?
> Our money's not based on anything, it's not even real.
Failed economics 101 award. Money is an economic good. Economic good prices are based on supply and demand. While not physical it is very much real.

Yep. Fluoride was well understood to displace heavier halogens, alter calcium domains, poison several hundred enzyme systems,a nd lower IQ by like the 50's. That's why it's in the water. Like fuarrrkin' DUH. And then we've got retards like that guy around.

and how is it wrong exactly? Does human body produce fluoride? Did incidents not happen because they are reported by le hekin' LLM? Mr. "I soykaf my pants" MD, please tell me.

Honestly, I changed my mind. Fluoride is incredible harmful. I can't explain your mental retardation any other way. We must ban fluoride to stop people like you from appearing.

Why? Because anon challenged your thought and you couldn't prove how anon is wrong, despite waving your MD around like a green card? And then you just resorted to ad hominems with no substance? I thought doctors were all about scientific approach.

>western trad values say progress marches on eternally and things will get better
The bible most definitely does not say this and this really seems to be the foundation of progressivism. Maybe there was an American optimism as manifest in such deluded men as Wilson that was crushed, but saying its some fundamental aspect of Christendom is ridiculous, and the progressives of course found their worldview on the antifascist crusade without the cross. And Wilson famously wasn't able to get the US to join his league of nations. So much for that.
>WWII caused the death of western trad values
I didn't at first realize the gravity of this claim when reading your post. Do you argue that the wave of communism throughout europe wasn't some rattle of this death of european tradition. And it was hardly confined to the east where it took hold in the soviet union, you had revolutions and serious fighting all through the continent to stamp it out. Do you argue that all the reforms in the US between 1850 and 1920 were not radical and antitradition ? We went so far as banning alcohol, without which I may be so bold to say the entire expansion of European civilization beyond europe would not have happened or not to near the same degree. Even the revolutions of the 18th century can easily be argued as early signs of the death of traditional European civilization for the previous 1700 odd years. I do not wish to defend tradition for traditions sake, and I won't deny that WWII was very significant, but it was not out of context, and if it was a turning point, it was a sharp bend in the turn that had been started quite some time prior.
>quit with the demoralization propoganda
I think you're responding to another poster but my post here is certainly guilty to a degree, of this. For the most part I don't engage in that but its eminently foolish to conflate inventiveness and technological progress as it were to worldly wisdom and societal health. We live in many ways in the peak age of technology over the entire span of history, yet in many ways our society and civilization are doing miserably. Technological progress has not been monotonic, and nor has societal health, and the two are not strictly correlated, nor do I think they are necessarily anticorrelated.
>we live in a world where the mindset of the pursuit of glory is in danger.
We live in a world where the glory of our ancestors and heros is attacked, where their bodies are exhumed for no other purpose but to humiliate them and their descendants and admirers, where their monuments are ripped down and broken, where not only their graves but the graves of their animals are defaced, and where the people who do these things, if they are not our own government, are patted on the back and encouraged by those who are, and even those who are elevated as heros, many of them unpleasant and dishonest if not outright horrible, are henpecked in the grave for being too misogynist or too racist or not sufficiently interested in sodomy. Easily the most impressive men alive today are endlessly belittled and henpecked by their obvious inferiors, in public conversation. I'm not even sure what you would do to pursue glory in this environment.
I don't mean to be demoralizing but frankly the situation is bleak. Things have gone very wrong and at a quite deep level, and they have been going wrong for many years, perhaps especially since WWII, but beginning well before that. I'm not sure what the solution is but it requires rejection of many of the trappings and beliefs of 'the modern world', and that means rejecting many of the beliefs of the 1950s, and the 1910s, and I shan't say that it stops there. My ancestors have made terrible mistakes but it remains with me and my generation to do what we can to right the ship before it goes under.

>and that means rejecting many of the beliefs of the 1950s, and the 1910s, and I shan't say that it stops there
But when I say, "1950's style belief", what do you think I'm talking about?
I'm talking about tireless hard work. Grit. Independence. The ability to bear pain. These were traits that average men actually had back then. This just feels totally obvious to me, given everything I've heard and read about America from roughly 1860 to 1945. But if I bring this point up to you, I feel like your gut instinct is to tell me, "Oh no that's all bullshit" and you'll tell me about how old people always say that the newer generation is weaker, more feminine, and less willing to work hard than the last. But is that really true? Is it actually true that all generations of people are the same?
Well... of course not. From 1830 to 1900, factory workers in America worked about 60 hours a week on average. Can you actually imagine that? Working in some disgusting, dusty, loud, smelly factory before air-conditioning was invented, and doing it 60 hours per week, and probably getting poisoned somehow, and on top of that you have to obey an oppressive moral code? Try to mentally put yourself in the place of a man in the 1870s who had to do all that. It would be brutally difficult, wouldn't it? This was just normal day-to-day life for our ancestors. And it never ended.
So when I say, "We need to adopt a 1950's mindset", this is actually what I'm referring to. It's just a tool. Tools are not just physical -- they can be mental too. And what I'm saying is that obsessing over the "woke mob" and how your generation got fuarrrked over is taking you nowhere. It's giving you literally nothing. And I'm amazed that you guys don't realize this. Like every day you wake up pissed off that your future was stolen, and instead of doing anything about it, you... vent about it to your friends. Really?
Like I'm not brushing aside your concerns here. Nothing you say is really wrong. But if we're talking about, "How do you actually live a meaningful life while our world is in decline?", then the first step is no longer fixating on the dumb pessimist bullshit that everyone else under age 40 is fixated on. Because that's the exact reason this generation is like kicking dead whales down the beach, it's why nobody is accomplishing anything. You don't have to buy into any of that.

>Why
I did prove him wrong he just decided to ignore what I say.
How are several accidents when a large dose of a chemical got released momentarily connected to accumulation in the brain from prolonged exposure and what does it have to do with developmental diabilites caused by prolonged high concentration fluoride exposure in kids?
And if you were a little more observant, around 100% of the posts in this discussions contain ad hominem.
Now the reason why I just decided to call that anon retarded and go on my way is because I'm not going to spend any more time on pointless internet arguments.

>Does human body produce fluoride
your body does not produce water either. Nor does it produce calcium, phospohrus, copper, iron, the list goes on.
Now the reason why I dismiss llm answers is because i'm not going to argue with an llm.
You can ask gemini why you are wrong about fluoride btw if you trust it more. Or does it magically becomes unreliable when it report what you dont like?
Look, it says THE SAME SHIT as I do. Now, who doesn't do homework exactly?
