>highly concentrated solution of the most addictive chemical that exists, sugar
>soycaf not even worth mentioning
>marketed to children with developing brains, zero self control, and access to their parents' wallets
>sold in vending machines so that its consumption is as alienated as its production
where did we go so wrong as a society as to allow this, lain?

The ag lobby and packaged foods lobby has a lot of power in the West. That being said, might as well indulge yourself in such vices. You're just gonna die in ~50 years time anyway.
Zero Cool · 2026-07-21 06:36
I think the most egregious are cereals. ffs i just want wheat, nuts and fruits in the morning why does it have 40g of sugar in a portion.
my chocolate spread for toast has way less than that!
It is maddening trying to look for a cereal brand with relatively low sugar, only to settle on a box has dry fruits on the box, but no actual dry fruits in the contents itself because i didn't look at the ingredients that time.
J.C. Denton · 2026-07-21 07:07
nothing wrong with sugar if you are active after consuming it. the problem is sugar combined with sedentary lifestyle.
The Fin · 2026-07-21 07:28
IDK if there's that much difference between sugar and wheat carbs really, even in your mouth one is processed quickly into the other. Just eat eggs and meat for breakfast and throw a little toast on the side if you want.

you're missing the point, lain.
children are being exposed to extrema of hedonic function from an early age in a form of alienated consumption that can only exist due to the condition of hypermodernity. people in this board won't shut up about social media or whatever (even accelerationists), and we even get qanon rejects screeching about 5g towers, but then largely ignore the profound damage that the psychosocial orgainzation of consumption in western society harms us materially.
(also there's no amount of exercise that can burn through a sufficiently high glucose peak, burning long chain sugars and especially fats is far more efficient, but like I said -- that's besides the point)
Jet Black · 2026-07-21 15:33
Sugar methylates your DNA by attaching a Methyle-compound to it : CH₃.
This silences genetic expressions for Cell-Regeneration.
More so, sugar binds to proteins, its transported/ distributed over the blood stream everywhere in your body. There it contacts with e.g. Collagen to finally disable it.
---
Why its marketed/enforced on kids :
Because kids dont read Pub-med articles elaborating on bio-chemestry.
Most normogroid parents dont either, they rather follow some life-style influencer, who tells them gossip-stories and has a sponsor.

My opinion that's been consistent on this topic for many years is that excessive sugar definitely bad and too little sugar is also bad. But sugar is everywhere anyway. And even if you don't consume raw white sugar, it will be hard to avoid sugars in general to the extent it becomes dangerous. So avoiding raw added sugars is often beneficial and you'll still get enough from from just random food. But you can also eat a bit of chocolate or honey now and then just for fun and to make sure you're not running too low.

No, even if you have an active lifestyle it's not good to drink what's basically liquefied candy or eat candy for breakfast.
>Why do we allow this
Because the people who do it have enough money to buy politicians, and the politicians who allow themselves to be bought are insulated from the effects of their decisions because their kids don't eat that crap. Welcome to Liberal Democracy.

Automobiles, suburbs, atomic families. These things disintegrated households, a mom and dad are expected to often work longer and do all of the house keeping and child rearing work of what once belonged to 5 or more people.
A quick n easy breakfast ready in under a minute that the kid doesnt complain about that a company and advertisement promise you is good for your kids? During a time when your average citizen likely still held onto the american dream and faith in america? Easily integrated into this culture and setting. Its still here just cause it became such a staple over a few generations, though I do think cereal consumption is on the down trend.

Also the things I mentioned are also why your families secret recipe went from some special dish from your great grandmothers home country to some soykaf written on a box of mass produced flour or macaroni. Great grandma had a lot more help and time to baby a pot of sauce all day, your grandma probably tried and would make that sort of soykaf on special occasions but not almost everyday like great grandma. By the time of your mom its just out the window and stouffers copyright trademark green bean casserole recipe one pot one oven becomes a lot more attractive and doable.

It's crazier as a single person that has a 9 to 5. I don't even get breakfast anymore.
At first I rationalized it by the fact I pretty much don't move enough at work to justify a breakfast, but man it's crazy that I can just drop this ritual i had my whole life up until a couple years after getting a good job.

(fwiw, eastern european build, always been generally slim.) for years would eat four or more eggos plus an egregious amount of syrup for breakfast. then in college i just gave it up! wasnt that hard for me. now im an alcoholic and a pothead so i definitely have my demons. mostly i try and stay away from desserts and UPFs. seems best to avoid. tho im currently not stressing much over it since im doing strength training. ill eat some hi chews here and there;)

nothing bad from sugar itself, its high in energy and a very efficient food that makes one smarter
it could be a problem if you generally predisposed to overeating, only then sugar alone can cause problem as its efficient but not too filling, so some might overeat other stuff with it
if anything sodium or purines from processed meat is more of a problem

short chain sugar is extremely inefficient. your blood concentration is going to spike after ingesting it, to far higher levels than you can reasonably burn even during intense exercise. it needs to be converted to fat before it can be useful. you'd need nothing short of a carefully graduated IV drip to burn sugar efficiently.

>where did we go so wrong as a society as to allow this, lain?
No problem in letting people poison themselves with unhealthy crap. The problem is the lack of transparency and the selective permissiveness of our establishment.
>sugar, plastic, soy, ultra processed food, self castration, fabricated aloofness (mistakenly called introversion): socially reinforced and acceptable
>tobacco, alcohol, graphical violence, organic extroversion, subcultural determinism: socially unacceptable
You see, there is a crusade going on against tobacco since the 90s, which in practice only lowered the quality of smoking products over time. The crusade against "unhealthy foods" for children produced similar outcomes. Now we have generally unhealthy food, without the infantile appeal, since the world was re-engineered to become aesthetically hostile to the feel of excitement and child-like awe. As soon as you realize the concept of "health" will always serve and follow the plans for societal re-framing established by our datalords, you can start just consuming what you think is right and stop caring about how families voluntarily follow tendencies of the industry.

organic extroversion is socially unacceptable? Wtf are you on about lain?
Also, the reason most people feed themselves or their children this crap is only because it's what is available/cheap, it's marketed directly to kids, and most parents are very lazy.
My parents fed me oatmeal and raisin bran, not because they were anti-establishment, but because they thought for two seconds about it and were willing to tell me no. Now I don't have much of a taste for sugary cereal.

Nice trips.
>organic extroversion is socially unacceptable? Wtf are you on about lain?
It is. Fabricated/socialized extroversion is enforced, though. Social convention dictates you must be extroverted within a specific framework: for commercial purposes, attwhoring, attending will to belong, self reprogramming/deprogramming, narrative repetition to program others, perpetuating digital social media, etc.
Try being socially spontaneous with literally any stranger and you'll understand what I'm talking about. Like fist bumping a stranger you think is cool, exchanging cigarettes with someone, hitchhiking, starting a subculture or camping at a relatively crowded public spot.
Making connections because of genuine compatibility or simply the will to connect to other humans is something civilization aims to eradicate. Making connections for profit, otoh, is mandatory.

Search "Australian paradox": consumption of sugar in Australia declined by 23% between 1980 and 2003, yet obesity in that time tripled. Scientists couldn't explain how obesity could have tripled when sugar consumption went down, so they called it a "paradox". The dietary industry has a dogma to blame sugar for everything and nobody has the balls to challenge the industry.
In fact, sugar is good for you: it's the most available, most efficient food for your brain out there. Simple carbs like white rice are ultimately just sugar. Widespread adoption of sugar and sugar becoming a common good (as compared to being available only to riches before) made everybody smarter. Sugar society IQ peaked in XX century, and now it's in the decline.
Look up the Randle cycle: metabolic mechanism discovered in 1960s and completely forgotten and memoryholed until very recently. Your cells have to choose between burning fat or glucose for energy. When a healthy body has a plenty of glucose, cells burn it and convert it into fuel efficiently. Polyunsaturated fat, however, has a property to bind to your cells for a really long time (seed oils, or PUFAs, stay in our body for up to 2 years), and when your cells are overwhelmed by fat, fat inhibits glucose; cells cannot burn glucose anymore, insulin goes up, cortisol goes up.
>Citrate Accumulation: High fat burning also creates excess citrate, which leaves the mitochondria and blocks phosphofructokinase (PFK-1), completely stopping glycolysis (the breakdown of sugar). Insulin Resistance: Because the cell cannot burn glucose, glucose builds up in the blood. The pancreas pumps out more insulin to clear it, leading to temporary insulin resistance.
The real problems are refined, overprocessed foods, seed oils and PUFA in general. The solution is to eat natural, organic foods like fruits, honey, cane/beet sugar (added to drinks like tea and coffee), bake your own sweets without additives. Energy drinks like monster do not even contain sugar, they contain artificial sweeteners that potentially cause cancer (not yet confirmed) and disrupt gut microbiome (confirmed).

in my experience spontaneous social interactions with strangers are almost always positive. Everything in your list, I've either done or in the case of hitchhiking, my friend did it (and also picks up hitchhikers).

OK, I get it. But I think that doesn't mean it is acceptable (to the forces tampering with the social tissue).
That's why we must keep doing it. Random, organic, human associations. We should keep smoking in forbidden places, drinking where or when they say we can't, creating weird subcultures, creating insane and offensive movies and games, eating sugary bullcrap when we feel like it, doing fuarrrked up diets because we want to experiment, et cetera.
OP suggests, even if implicitly, that we should enforce more restriction, so my whole point is that we should start being less tolerant towards the idea of restricting consumption and more tolerant about people's habits, instead of the opposite - which is the stance of our society.
