I'm in a really dumb situation but listen me out because its affecting me greatly.
So I think you all know that last december 4chan got new third party ads, rumors of a bitcoin miner and malware ran around but most of all if you block those ads there is a script the kills the site's CSS and I lived without CSS for a while before I decided to leave 4chan out of ethics.
Abandoning 4chan has been very hard for me, unlike other people I still enjoyed the site and used it a lot and after many years (I been an anon since 2009) quitting has left a very big hole in me. I used to spend all day on /co/, there isn't another place like it on the internet and I enjoyed many other boards. I still have my reaction image folder and I still find use for it as avatars on discord but strolling through it its just a reminder of what I left. I still haven't found a replacement for all those things and now I understand they will never be replaced and I just have to live with new different things. I'm using other websites and making new friends but I feel so lost and empty, Mostly a fear of missing out, in most social network you have to say "yes I like this" and subscribe but that'll create a bubble and I'm terrified of the idea, that is why I like imageboards, you always stumble upon something new, its not a that you create like in other sites.
All the friends I made in the last 8 years I met them on 4chan and I'm very concerned about them and well all anons, I hope they have some place to go and that we can meet each other again soon.
Plus I don't feel safe online anymore, on every website I go I'm afraid it is run by shaddy people or that the people I meet only are trolls who want to backstab me.
I know I should make new friends and by word of the mouth discover new stuff but its hard and returning to 4chan constantly tempts me, I keep making conditions like "I'll only use the android app, that's safe" or "When I have a month off the site" but I don't want that to happen. I don't know what I want now but I'm really concerned about every one's well being.
Pic related is from the comic Tomboy, I used to storytime several issues on /co/, I feel this monologue resambles what I'm feeling.

I might be using the term in a quite rude manner but it sounds like a form of addiction (or a bad habit).
You could try doing something new every time you get the urge to go on 4ch.
Like instead of checking /co/ you check a news site and read articles there. Maybe you should stay away from computers in general for a time.

>check a news site and read articles there
Don't do that. News are probably the worst media you can consume.

Why don't you give https://8ch.net/co/index.html a try. I've skimmed over some threads and community seems to be nice and reasonably active.

Yes its an addiction, I'm aware of it and I'm aware I'm in the process of being detoxing.
I've made the effort of exploring new things, specially on the social network I'm using now but I should look for other sites beside that.
Still that combines with what I said before, I have to dig on my memory and then dig on the site for content and #hashtags aren't easy to navigate

I used 8ch's /co/ like a couple of years ago but stopped using the site altogether because most of the users do not care about the board's subject and are just interested in outrage culture
More recently I heard a troll got hold of the board ownership and has twisted to place to be pure hatred towards the medium
Tho I made a thread about /co/ stuff on /vis/ it doesn't seem to be rolling too much

Have you read through >>>/r/6299 and tried those imageboards?
I know how you feel. I've abandoned 4chan after the culture became too pol-y.

I've slowly gone out of imageboards due to realising that the good days are over and it's all just people taking the internet seriously at this point. 8chan was great after the exodus but it didn't last. I'm 100% glad I'm not going on them much anymore

Just strolled through that thread, none of the sites mentioned have a co/
I also have a chans folder on my bookmarks, I know tons of sites but even if they have a co/ they're very dead.
I left lit/ in 2012 due to pol/ plus the fact that philosophy has taken over which only promoted more pol/ tier discussion.

We have to take the internet seriously now, the old days were trolling was harmless fun are long over but the joke keeps going on and won't end.
8ch has been bleeding users the last year but imageboards hardly ever close down due to that.

Why is all of the dialog in that comic written like this?
Jokes aside, it can be hard to break away from a community once you've been there for a while (part of the reason I'm still on lainchan, heh). I think what I would do would be to still browse /co/, but start looking for other places where you can make friends and talk about that kind of stuff. Alt-chans like 8ch or forums, maybe even try to find some art meetups irl (although, ik, you'll undoubtably end up meeting a bunch of fuarrrking normal people). Best of luck to you Lain!

In comics even text has lots of visual ques, don't think of the text as just text that contains information but the characters voice, way of speaking and even their presence, things like the font, the shape of the balloon and the coloring help to add contrast and to communicate the feeling like the fairy next to Addison that has a black balloon with white text to communicate how otherworldy she is. Words that are randomly bold do get annoying but simply don't think of them as the speaker emphasizing them as they talk
There are few chans with /co/ boards, plus4chan is moribund and 8ch is a honeypot full of pol/ posters, right now I would really like to start my own chan but I think we're seeing the downfall of image boards and that we need something new.

> I still have my reaction image folder
Coincidentally I deleted a lot of that stuff today. Not just reactions but stuff I used to post a lot back when /mu/ or /tv/ were still worth participating in, images with absolutely no value in any other context.
For better or worse, there will never be anything like it again. Posting on other imageboards doesn't scratch the itch because part of the addiction is the speed and other boards don't have it. It's hard to admit but 4chan got me through some rough spots. When other forums seemed desolate and no one was responding for hours or days, you could at least count on 4chan. Even when the userbase just made you mad, that could snap you out of a depression and make you feel less alone.

I will never get rid of mine because I'm a data hoarder and a wannabe archivist, I can't wait in 15 20 years when my folder is a fountain of nostalgia.
Your story is curious because I joined 4chan after a depressive episode, I was like "I need a laugh, what's that place were memes come from? Ah yes 4chan" and I stood ever since.
I do hope something replaces it soon...
The Oracle · 2018-02-01 22:56
I'm feeling better now but I still have doubts, should I make the conscious effort to avoid 4chan or can I take peaks? Should I return now that the panic seems unjustified?
On the other end I been thinking about expanding my activities online, I been thinking about making a twitter and a neocities page, last night I spoke with someone; there isn't a replacement for /co/ in this world but if what I like is obscure stuff I should curate content to help it grow and find other people that likes the same obscure stuff. It's fair, now I depend on thing going from mouth to mouth.
Dunno what to think but there is nothing stopping me from doing anything I've thought so far.
