What is your purpose in life?
Haruyoshi · 2017-12-04 08:58
Seems like a pretty generic question but here it goes anyways
Life seems pretty pointless to me if it weren't for computers I would have nothing to live for, social interactions are frustrating and I see humans as stupid selfish creatures I would like to hear your opinion
Pic unrelated
Pris · 2017-12-04 09:23
Life is pointless in the way that there's no written algorithm to it. If you didn't notice this, you confirm to society you live in and accept its values and goals. If you notice this, you'd better eat a cyanide sandwich if you don't wanna to live in pathetic misery. Because chances are you will never find a purpose to your life. Most of these people end up being neets and hikkis (i mean literally hikkis), living off somebody else's bread and consuming media in a pointless attempt to fill a hole in ther chests with it.
Self-awareness is a pretty fuarrrked up thing, that's my opinion.
Agent Jones · 2017-12-04 13:59
Yeah I'd echo what the other lainon said. Life's super pointless and really, the best thing you can do is enjoy it however you can. If computers do that for you, then do that. There isn't some higher purpose you're missing.
I don't really agree with the idea that humans are stupid and selfish, but the premise is too general to really consider.
Neuromancer · 2017-12-04 17:40
Life has no purpose except the one you choose to assign it.
You must choose a purpose for yourself if that is what you desire. If not, then enjoy your time in the present.
Biologically speaking, life exists to propagate itself, it is in effect, the physical embodiment of the meme. Genes are physical encoding of information that has one goal, to continue existing and multiply to improve its chances of survival. Why? no reason other than the emergence of complex behavior from systems moving toward their lowest energy state. Many small simple things, following a few basic rules, many billions or trillions of times over a longer time, can occasionally yield life as we know it today.
If you choose no purpose, then you will likely be co-opted by someone else's, or something else's purpose. Whether that be your boss, your society, your biology, or whatever comes along and imposes its will on you.
Might makes right. If you have no will to exercise your might, you can expect someone else or something else to exercise its might on you.

not op but you didn't answer the question. if we create our own purpose what did you make for yourself.
i don't really understand pointing out the pointlessness of life, you still didn't answer the question. you answered some other question, we all have heard the argument life is purposeless, the human brain or at least western thought isn't regardless. what is it you do with your life, why are you still alive, to me this seems like a very personal question regardless of your views on lifes purpose. if you answer i have none why, then haven't you killed yourself yet, and the answer to that question is your purpose. if its something like "why would i" or "i dont have the energy" then your purpose is just to exist and then die and say that.
in a world where we naturally assign purpose, cause and effect, beginning and end to everything, your brain has some rationally explained purpose. It doesn't matter how wise you are or if you acknowledge "i simply dont because my instincts prevent me from killing myself" then again your purpose is just to exist or follow your instincts. stop being dodgy with the question in all honesty.
personally for me its just to draw and show people what i draw. this is my purpose ive assigned to myself. it makes life okay.

I may have made it sound too exciting.
The base idea is mostly to dabble in gamedev and other assorted arts that can be combine with it, such as writing and music making.
I have plans, but they are too grand to be assumed realistic at this point.
More likely ill end up drug addicted and mentally ill dead, but as long as i have a vision to pursue i will do to the best of my limited ability.
Trough this i intend to explore ideas and their power, which in turn hopefully will show me how the mind and reality really works and how to use it.
New technologies such as vr, nootropics and whatnot will offer interesting possabilities to us.
Im not sure how it turns out, as i said its a pretty long shot and i dont intend to go much anywhere, i just want to see where things really take me.
But i know one thing for certain and that is that there is a whole world of the mind to be explored open yet.
Whetever men like me can handle this is another question.

In the majority of my adult life, I've viewed existence on this earth as a giant sandbox game. Character creation is random. Everyone starts out with different skills, talents, amounts of money, psychological or physical problems, etc. You can build whatever you want, if you want to. You can dive down whatever spec tree you want. Or you could quit. I've always insisted that all options are viable. You could be the dude in minecraft who burns other people's houses down or constructs giant dicks right next to someone else's artistic masterpiece. Some prior might call you an asshole, but it's all fair in this game as far as I'm concerned. So what do I play the game for?
-Games. Competing with other intelligent minds in a controlled setting with specific rules and then talking about our thought process. Chess, fightans, roguelike tournaments, etc. I love comparing notes, and commiserating over shared problems(e.g. "remember that one fuarrrking boss?")
-humor. Irony, banter, teasing, self depreciation, feigned ignorance, language games, improv. Exploration of amusement and novelty in a social setting.
-story telling and make believe. I'm schizoid, so I can read a decently written touhou fanfic, and construct my own version of the world internally. I daydream all the time and have crazy make believe worlds and people that I love interacting with in my own head. I'm even interested in the tulpa meme, and plan to look that up. I know that this isn't a thing that "adults" are supposed to do, but who cares? You can make the sandcastle whatever shape you want. Don't let the other children restrict you.
-music. If you haven't listened to your favorite song lying in bed with maybe a drink or a smoke in you, and just closed your eyes and taken in everything? And felt awash in a sea of auditory sensory experience that changes how you feel about sound? I don't know what the fuarrrk you're doing with your life my nigga, I really don't.
-sleeping/asmr vids. Better than sex, and I like me some sex....But ugh. Atmospheric asmr? Where the role plays are really convincing? Mwah. Bliss.
Some other stuff probably. Please be advised that none of this takes suicide off the table. Everyone is welcome to log out whenever they want. But don't let convention constrain your thinking. You can do literally whatever you want. The only hard laws are laws of nature. Everything else is other children whining because you're not building your sand castle like theirs. IGNORE THEM.

Aw that was a nice read and though I share your viewpoint, it was refreshing noting that, indeed, one is free to do as one likes and there's noone to tell you what's wrong and what's right
In my case my castle is more like a fortres, closed to people on the outside but in which I build all sorts of towers and stairways, kind of like in an Escher painting. To the outside world, however, it looks like a very plain and dull square with tiny windows. Few care to peek inside, and quite honestly, most don't seem to be interested in what they see, so I kick them out, I banish them from getting anywhere near. Not that they would care, but I do. I try to build the most intrincate possible structures, with the hopes of someday creating something that will be worth seeing from the outside. Maybe then, once my opus is in a decent state, I might tear the walls and hopefully the resulting work should stand out as something quite unlike the rest. That day may never come, but in the meantime, I will just keep drawing intrincate shapes...

My purpose in life is to learn as much about reality as possible. By that I mean to dissect the universe itself, find what makes it tick and exploit the soykaf out of it. I'm certain that we'll one day find how everything works. That day might be still very far away, but it's worth contributing towards this goal, even if I don't get to live the moment when it happens. Maybe we will run out of time as an aincient civilizaztion, living entirely in a computer, powered by radiation emitted by supermassive black hole, maybe we'll fail to evacuate earth when Sun will finaly burn up, maybe we'll destroy ourselves even before that happens... There are so much more events to look forward to: first contact with alien civilization, first colony on another planet, fusion, antimatter, artificial black holes, dark matter and a lot of other new exciting science... Once you start looking at things on grander scale everyday problems become so pointless and pathetic, I can't help but to laugh at them. Complaining about social interaction and depression? Not worth my time. I only have to look at the sun or the night sky, to get reminded, that those problems aren't really problems at all. There is also this fear of death that scares everyone. For me death is the final experiment. When it comes, I'll finaly learn what happens when you die. In 14bn years, by series of seemingly random events, particles have managed to form a sentient being that is now writing this post. I find that very bizare and worthy of further investigation.

>Life seems pretty pointless to me if it weren't for computers I would have nothing to live for
Like the others mentioned, there is no way to find any meaning in life because of it's nature, you could result in finding reproduction as the ultimate meaning of life.
But also that is not as filling in the current day of age where there are we are scattered with billions over this globe.
Where it barely matters what kind of purpose you have, there is always someone to replace you, even if you insist otherwise.
Even if it's your own offspring or some curry nigger.
The best you can do if influence the chances for your surrounding people to live as close to that meaning there is, and hopefully along the way have a good time.
Even if it seems pointless for you, it might hold some value to the other. And possibly by supporting that person will make you a happier person too.
There is no further meaning and nothing deeper that isn't for some cooperate business to exploit for your savings.
But you could also see it as a rule that has been lifted, with that I mean, you don't have to arch for any final goal in life preset by some essential fundamental bit of the universe.
I see it as a bit of freedom, like a blank spot for people to write down what THEY think is the meaning of life.
And as a source of inspiration and determination to keep going, in a way.
Just for the sake of hanging on, because we are all simply dynamics of space, nothing static, nothing bound to any form we should keep (I'll get into some social stuff later, there are social boundaries though, but those are just a matter of breaking through.)
and just go as we please.
Okay, onto the next subject.
>I would have nothing to live for
I have nothing to live for either, but I don't really know why but I don't see this as a bad thing.
As long as curiosity is still part of me, I will keep myself busy as long as I can.
>social interactions are frustrating
For me, I mainly have very similar issues, but since I've grown up to be at my best when alone.
I can easily go without them, but I happen to be okay with some company once in a while too.
Just not too much for me, since it gets awkward very quickly.
I've met some very lovely people on the trail while hiking, those who come up to you with their curiosity as motive to approach you.
The key part to growing such interest is by showing your experience to others or your activities.
I would highly recommend you buy some hiking gear, save up some money, read a bunch of books about hiking and camping and just go out for a while.
It may seem pointless, but what isn't in life?
>I see humans as stupid selfish creatures
I have to agree, all humans are selfish in their own ways, some more than others.
But they all share this trait because you can't have enough of something (that's what instinct tells us) for survival.
Let this be money, attention, freedom, security, love, expression of opinions, expression of emotions.
And I think this current society limits all these factors too, and forces us to be placed into one static role for our entire lives from when we are born.
Yet, this is not possible or doable for us humans.
So there will always be hiccups and dips, it's not for what we were designed for.
Hence why we are so capable of improvisation when SHTF. That's our skill, the thing that makes us different from our ancestors, our ability for a more in depth level of abstract thinking. (See neocortex)
But this can be a double edged sword at times, because some ideas are perceived differently by the others in society.
And to counteract this, we still have a "reptilian brain" to our need to live safely in a bubble and to survive another night. Based off previously working techniques that got us through the night.
Hence why humans act so sceptically about change in even the mildest things.
This, can be perceived as a boundary and limitation of our freedom to innovate new techniques, since it has to pass through a social filter.
Out of this is also tradition born, which can limit a lot of other humanity's expressions and acts.
I could be going deeper into this, but I think you get what I am talking about.
But most of the selfish acts are usually initiated out of a motive of fear, anger or purely for the sake of survival. Or simply fer teh lulz

Yes, life is pointless. Humans are disgusting and that includes me and you. But I haven't killed myself yet so I must have something to live for, I just need to figure out what that is. Negative experiences on a surface level are no fun, but without them we wouldn't have some of the greatest works of art, literature etc. And yes, art is ultimately pointless as well, however, I am currently living by the idea that the fact that art is just as unimportant as everything else is what gives it beauty. Is the art made for you, or for others? I'm still thinking this through myself.
Basically, I don't want to live, but I don't really want to die. I'd rather just melt into a sludge of anime, music and alcohol.

The whole point of life, at the very least, from what i've seen, is to find a point or reason to stay alive. This can range from intentionally posting extremely idiotic content on imageboards, to helping those in dire situations, or just having fun and playing video-games. Whatever the case is, as long as you find something you can find enjoyment in, that's the whole point is. If you can't find a reason to live, then you haven't looked hard enough, or you're one of the few who simply cannot.
Unless you mean a more literal "point of life", in which case, is to get a occupation/career/job, get married, and have children who will eventually grow old and move out.
tl;dr: Try to have fun regardless of what you do because we'll all die anyways.

Some people devote themselves to the arts. Others math and science. Some people just want to work and pursue their hobbies. I think that the important thing to understand is not that ideals and collectives are bad, but that each person should not feel pressured about the one that they choose. If you have a particular ideal that you follow, then that's fine. If you find that your ideal conflicts with your morals, adjust it. That's fine too. If your ideal is personal flourishing as opposed to devotion to a cause, that's also ok. Wanting to focus on improving yourself over devotion to a group doesn't make you selfish or insane. Just like devoting yourself to something bigger doesn't necessarily make you a mindless drone. Self concern doesn't necessary = hedonistic sociopathy.

I would be careful with the statement "life is pointless", because it positively states the lack of a relation between life and meaning. I would rather say that life and meaning are independent, you can connect them or unconnect them, but the connection will be in you, not inherently between life and meaning. This means that both "life has meaning" and "life has no meaning" are false statements, because both of them overstep their bounds, both are "arrogant".
As for mine... I have several interesting, complete plans or stories and I want to spend my life living one of them. Sadly they are disjoint and I can do only one of them, trying to do a little of several would be complete ruin and misery. The details are not thought out in detail, each story is rather like an abstract idea (like 'study') which, sort of like an axiom-set, lets me judge if any given thing fits or does not fit this life. Each such idea is fascinating to me, and will likely set my life goals (more like, directions (more like, texture)) once I can make a choice... though making a choice seems neigh impossible.
There is however a default which I already am, called "dream", and it is one where I can't really go wrong, only boring. But that said, meaning is completely a part of the character, so no grand anything from me.

A kindred spirit. I felt a warped sense of this for a while where I thought I ought to figure out what I'm good at, re-create it with machines + software, and basically make myself superfluous so that no-one would have to depend on me. Depression is fuarrrking strange.
Anyway, I've got what I consider a healthier version of this outlook like you now. I'll leave automation to people who do that for a living and I'll focus on doing what I do with a human touch. PC building is getting popular with average young guys in my area and being able to wire up power connectors to a mobo correctly + install windows is a rare enough skill I get to be useful. Maybe after a few more of my assertions about the state of electronics are proven right, average people I know will start taking my advice seriously before they see the negative impact play out on the nightly news. That would be nice.

Ive been avoiding posting on any chan including this one for a year now. Breaking it today.
Im at a point where im more dedicated in life than ever. A slow realization has built up, from a very rough few months and then a month lomg relaxing break that if I wanted I could probably come to some unprovable but in my head unshakeable realization about what life is really about, but it would involve a lot of psychadelics and flying off to magic crazy land permanently, so instead il remain here on earth. Ive been depressed for a long time, but through the final complete realization, and this isnt true for everyone just in my case, that I dont want to be unhappy anymore; im no longer unhappy. Currently the struggle is rebalancing but im mostly through, being sad and happy at reasonable times. For a little bit I was just at peace, not feeling nothing but not feeling anything too extreme, but now I feel extreme if the situation calls for it. This is now my life, im free to do with it as I please and not worry about what forces do or dont act on me. Ive realized my brain has an amazing amount of processing power as all of ours and if I keep myself busy and dont worry about imaginary or abstract problems like "who am I" or "whats the point of life" instead I can focus it on things that truly make me happy and are uplifting. Your brain consumes so much energy processing these great big questions because they are endless and massively complex problems, and also if you have no real tangible problems to work at, your brain will create them to entertain itself. These are two big things I realized that help me. So my great tangible problem my brain is working through "my reason to live", its working through a couple.
One is to make art, the other is to get my degree, the third is to be there for those close to me, and the fourth is to have a job that will allow me to pay for a studio.
This might sound like a bunch of crap to all of you, it may be crap to you. But in my case my biggest struggle in life was myself making myself unhappy, and now im over it and I dont ever have to question why im alive, i just live. It doesnt work for everyone but it works for me.

It's becoming harder and harder each day to discern an sort of purpose and meaning in my life. Every avenue I've turned to so far just eventually hits a brick wall. Time just sort of goes by know as I fill my time with empty escapism that grows less and less appealing each day. Suicide seems more enticing all of the time.

>Life seems pretty pointless
Life is the opposite of pointless. There's millions of different perspectives to view life from and what makes life so fascinating to me is that you can develop your own drive in it.
> if it weren't for computers I would have nothing to live for
Hey, to each their own. Computers and the way electronics work in general are one of the countless wonders of the world. Whatever makes those gears inside of you tick, that's where your heart is. I'm glad to hear you found your passion.
>social interactions are frustrating
Social interactions are wonderful. To give some perspective I was an absolute neet who declined into a spiral of self loathing depression with major anti-social and anxiety traits into somebody who actively wants to engage in conversations, and aims for serve the people around me.
Maybe this could change your view on humans slightly, but image each human as a different computer if you will. Each have their own specifications as to what they operate to do, some are better are computing different tasks than others. Doesn't that make things a little more interesting?
>and I see humans as stupid selfish creatures I would like to hear your opinion
You're not wrong on that part. Humans when left in large groups can be selfish, but the act of good ripples through your environment. I strongly believe in the yin-yang effect, where there's something negative, there's something equally positive.

Most people are trash. The purpose of life is to become the least trash possible before you expire.
