Am I Ruining My Life?
Noferatu · 2017-10-23 14:55
Hi, everybody, I need some support and insight.
I have been battling with depression and anxiety since around the 5th grade, and never did any work grade 7 and 8. I am now in high school and I'm still depressed and am failing because technically the last grade I fully completed was the 6th grade. I have talked with my parents before about online schooling but they will not let me (even offered to pay for it). I have been having a tough time lately because I feel like I am ruining my life, and I don't know what to do. help, please.
ps. sorry for the soykafty writing, I am quite distressed.

See if you can talk to your teachers to see if they can help you. They will often let you pick up your marks with assignments and give you extensions when you miss tests and deadlines. Most teachers are flexible, but you have to do it. You have to make yourself present so your teachers can relate to you. One of the most important things you can do is show up every day. Teachers need to see that you're making an effort.
Summer school is easier. If you need to take a couple classes in the summer it's not the end of the world. It will get you out of the house, and most people will be a lot nicer because there's no time to make cliques.
Try to take classes that really interest you. Ask seniors what teachers are really compelling, and take their classes. These will be way easier, and you may even excel. If you can't get into these classes, talk to your guidance councelor.
Which brings me to my next point - talk to your guidance councellor. They can really help you out with your classes and your plans. They'll bring some really good insight to your particular situation and help you succeed post-highschool.
Once you start doing well, don't take on too much. Take it slow. Don't pile on a bunch of hard courses as soon as you're doing well. Depression symptoms can last for years after the core symptoms subside, including lethargy, especially since you've had depression during your formative years.
Try to get into therapy or psychologist as soon as you can. See what's free in your area in terms of child psychologists. It often takes a long time to get into these programs, but the sooner you try, the sooner you'll get in.
And most importantly, don't give up. You'll get through this, and all this now will be a distant memory.
Source: certified clinically depressed around the same time as you through highschool. I am now on my way to leader of an R&D department of a tech company.

Oh yeah, and don't smoke weed or drink. It makes it way worse. Plus you likely won't be able to enjoy them when you're older, and you'll be putting yourself at all kinds of risks of problems when you're older that you'll deeply fear. This is the one thing I really regret from when I was depressed.

As stupid of an answer this is, maybe try therapy? You're obviously distressed enough to ask about how to get better on an obscure anonymous imageboard. Talking about it with someone would probably help a lot, but you could also use that person as someone who helps you plan new steps towards a more healthy life. They can really help if you let them.

Yeah, I Rarely use any substances, but around the 8th and early 9th grade, I was heavily drinking, smoking, and using pot. while abusing my vyvance prescriptions. This may have something to do with this.

Yeah, my Mom tried getting me in, but it was only an afternoon drop in on school days at the free place, and i don't think her, nor me are willing to pay. But that might be the best

I have started handing in missed assignments, but for classes like tech with very little
writen things it has been hard (kind of ironic im failing tech). I am showing up everyday
but I lack productivity on most days.
I am probably going to have to do a couple classes this summer, but wasn't able to last
year because i only failed one class so they gave me credit recovery. And getting out of
the house on routine, for something less stressfull than this is good. about people being
nicer, I guess that would be good; most people don't bug me though, and I can make
friends in practice.
I have been meaning to give my guidance councelor a run down on my current situation, but
have been hessitant on making an appointment. I am taking an introductory computer class
next semester, so I am hoping that will make me a little more motivated about this school
thing. It will most likely be a breeze but if I can connect with the teacher or a group
of like-minded students, I feel like that would be a good motivator. The problem is it
being so easy I get lazy and don't do the work, and than it all piles up, and then I'm
behind big time.
I am gonna talk to my mom soon about seeing my doctor and possibly getting medication
even though I despise it. Thank you for the information and the source, I appretiate it
lots!
thank you

Stay away from the online schooling. It will only cause you to wallow in your sadness even more. Watch Gurren Lagann, join some clubs that you're interested in, and you should be smooth sailing. Also, you can't post here if you're under 18.

jammit, I just saw this thread, I am currently working on getting an online degree, and because of that, I hardly ever leave my home (i do go to work, and the store on occasion, but otherwise i dont talk with other human beings, Online school is a lot like lainchan, except its no fun, and the instructors are hardcore SJW, to the point that i had to write an essay about how international organizations affect global politics, using only provided sources. I would not have had an issue writing about it, except the sources were almost literal propaganda .One of them was from a professor of Jewish studies who said that you cant trust sources unless they come from government therefore unofficial reports = Jewish war crimes did not occur.
I guess Im just going through a tough time
I guess my life is the inverse of OP, i am doing good in school and work, but outside of that, its just really soykafty
as for you OP, try to get your GED if you have not already, you will need to interact with other humans eventually, or else you will end up having to live your entire life in fear unless you can overcome your problem. Hang in there. what state/ country do you live in?
>>3098
I would recommend the same to OP, except with my experiences with therapy, the person tries to blame it all on the patient and his problem, instead of looking at what sort of situations might have created the problem to begin with.
When I was in high school, I ended up not turning in assignments for a long time

to be honest, dont go for the meds, the best option especially for anxiety and depression is to resolve the underlying issue rather than cope with just the symptoms.
There are free tutoring services that you can use online, and I am sure that soem of us on here can provide you with information to help you learn.

You're school social worker/psychologist/guidance counselor might be the best person for you to talk to. Try talking to them about your situation. In case no one has told you, everything is going to be ok.

Looks like people have already given some great advice on here. I think your situation is far from hopeless. There are many professionals that are qualified to help you. Doctors, school guidance counselors, social workers, psychologists, and psychiatrists are all good options. You will have to seek out their help yourself. You are going to have to learn how to help yourself. You have sought out support here, so you I can see that you are already off on a good start. Everything is going to be ok.

PRO TIPS: Seek medical treatment first. It is not impossible that there is an underlying medical condition that it causing your depression and anxiety.
As far as medications go: Nearly all classes of modern psychiatric drugs are perfectly safe, aside from benzodiazepines. Avoid those. They can cause addiction/dependency issues and have been proven to greatly increase the risk for developing dementia later in life.

My recommendation about seeing the guidance councellor is to just book the appointment without hesitation and prepare yourself for it later. I know it's tough, but booking appointments for things can be a big relief/motivator.
Armitage · 2017-11-12 20:52
My input: fuarrrk school man. Unless you have some high hopes of fulfilling the generic worker bee lifestyle, raising a family, etc, there's no point. Keep living with your parents, do what you can to scrape by in high school now, and work in something like night security for the rest of your life. It's really no biggie. Schmooze the teachers to the point where they like you and are willing to give you a passing grade for being there.

Don't listen to >>3377 , those kind of drugs WILL ruin your life.

The drugs did not ruin my life. I would do independent research to discover what is best for you.
>>3510
Abandoning school now can close doors for you in the future. Not everyone needs that education, but most people do. Plus, you could discover something you enjoy, or at least gain perspective on some interesting subjects.

Personally even if im in horrible debt after college id be angry at myself for not trying at least. Plus I would have never gotten out of the house probably and met the people I did if not for college. I know not everyones like that though, just something to think about if you are.

Ah yes, I forgot about the American factor. School costs a tenth of that here, no one is in awful debt.
