Extortion and blackmail, mostly.

Agreed.
Nah, but seriously, don't force things. Go to a show / bar / event / hackerspace? / etc, and just be social. Maybe try to meet new people through existing friends. Don't force it.

I don't know, I should be really bad at making friends but things always slide into place and I end up with at least a couple of them.
One thing that has helped me is going places where I think the kinds of people I like would be.

Asking random people for cigarettes worked for me.
Drugs and alcohol in general seem like a good idea.
I have no idea how to do anything related to people.

>How do you make friends
I never had a particularly large amount of friends at any given time. However having common interests always helps. It sounds generic but the good ol' "oh you like X? I like X too!" helps with making friends. For me, keeping a friendship alive has been a matter of just helping each other out from time to time (especially with common interests, hobbies, etc).

Common interest mostly.
I roam from hobby to hobby and tend to actually enjoy socializing, meeting new people has anyways been amusing to me. So in practice it's not very difficult for me to get to know somebody. Meeting somebody new at work I start off with "So you're new here, right? Is this your first shift here you worked at?" "Oh, where did you work before?" And it ends up moving to more engaging topics like personal goals and subjects.
Surprisingly, many people at my work have a wide variety of interest philosophy and spirituality, as that's always fun to learn about in my eyes.

Clubs mostly, and the dreaded group assignments. Currently sitting across from a girl who I met at drama club who I love very much.

I don't.

When I started UNI I made some new friends randomly, there was times when I got the courage to start a conversation with these total strangers, also making friends in these places isn't quite hard because most likely you have common grounds with others, and when you hook up with someone you will also get introduced to others. So I made 3-4 friends but they are all gone now and hate my guts.
