Help /hum/ I have a new paranoia that the afterlife is nothing but perpetual human suffering. Basically its worse than nihlism since life isnt just pointless but its actually detrimental to our existence since we just like the rest of the earth are eternal and the only way that animals could exist is because they had no cognitive abilities and merely lived on instincts while humans think, have tried to give meaning into their time on earth not knowing that in death your consciousness still exists and the perception of time is still there. Please tell me that I am not the only one who has had this convenient thought for a while because it is a huge downer and I only discovered this paranoia after the first time I got high

>>1323 When met with thoughts like this try to construct an argument. If you can't make a proper one (with evidence, conclusion etc. Look up how the old greeks made arguments) it's not sound. Here's one: I think you should stop doing drugs because it makes you bonkers. Proof: this thread

>>1323 Go to church lain, and not one of those prissy progressive ones. I won't attempt to invalidate your fears like >>1329 you clearly are in a state where you need answers to your questions. I personally like the Reformed churches but that might not work for you. The Pentecostals and Charismatics are weirdos tho.

Consider this: the arguments for a negative afterlife are both just as, and only as string as, the arguments for a positive one. Do the arguments for a positive afterlife sway you? If not, then why should the argument for a negative one?

Let's say you're right. I don't think you are, but just for argument's sake let's assume it. Who cares? An eternity of suffering may await you but there's nothing you can do about that. Will you spend what time you have here fretting over it? Nobody knows what awaits us after we die but in the meantime we have a choice. Enjoy the life you have, forget death and whatever comes afterwards. It's not your problem. Focus on the here and now, on the things that you can change and the life that lies before you. If you get to the end and find that it really is an eternity of pain that greets you at least you'll get there having gotten the most out of your brief time here. Live, laugh and be merry. Spit your joy in the face of death and whatever may come after. Today that is not your concern. Today you're still alive.

>>1325 marijuana, it was the first time I tripped and I can swear a false diety was laughing at me telling me that I had died and as all my senses became twisted and abnormal he would mock me saying that this is eternal and that my life was all for naught.

>>1329 It was my first time and I only did it once since, I still felt really bad during it and was completely disillusioned with the world around me.

>>1340 I found the churches idea of eternal life of any kind more painful to think about than anything. As in the bullsoykaf about afterlife that the church espouses is likely the very same thing that is causing OP such distress. The so called "answers to your questions" through church you are proposing are answers affirming OPs fears more than anyone else in this thread and these answers are just assertions based on religious traditions anyway. Your argument seems to be more about how you don't like certain Christian denominations than anything. Are you just taking for granted that Christianity is right and imposing that on OPs issue?
Cat Mother · 2017-07-04 09:48
>>1361 Another thing that i found distressing was that life continues, for a while now i have been thinking that the scientific answer that ther is nothingness once you die, that your consciouness just disappears is a more comforting thought than heaven or hell, because in heaven you still have to experience the afterlife and there is no rest

>>1361 At one point I had a very cool priest tell me that he was unsure about the afterlife about 50% of the time, but that he was sure it wasn't anything that would hurt. IE: you go to heaven if you've done your best to live with a little bit of humanity otherwise you go to purgatory, you get to go to hell if you've done something like commit a war crime or had an abortion. Otherwise he said that sometimes he just imagined it as a peaceful nonexistence. I had this discussion with this priest when I was at the height of my anxiety disorder, constantly worried about death and what came after. The eastern orthodox rites believe something neat too, the light of god in heaven 'tabor light' is the same thing as the fires of hell divine ecstasy for the believers and purifying fire for the sinners. Some protestants believe that being hellbound or heaven bound is predestined. Overall remember that all Christians believe in a 'loving and merciful' god. If you're seeking an answer, remember that the Christians think god was incarnate as a human being and that he understands your suffering. >>1323 When I was in your situation I did research, hours and hours of research, until I was too tired to worry, research on my physicality, research on what various cultures believed about the afterlife, and after a while I was comforted, and I managed to convince myself that all suffering was temporary. That's what I tell myself now whenever I'm anxious or like freaking out or something like that, it's all temporary you'll be alright!

>>1365 There's a small percentage of people who have an adverse reaction to marijuana and it makes them psychotic. I'm one of them. I can handle mushrooms for instance but even small amounts of pot send me to alternate realities for hours. It's not pleasant.
