Stimulant tolerance

Hagbard Celine · 2022-01-24 22:23
So I’ve been curious about the use of stimulants to improve cognition and general improvements in work/education. However, it seems that tolerance is generally unavoidable for any stimulant rendering them eventually useless for consistent/daily long term improvements. I’m just curious as to how this works and if there’s any ways around this. For example, rotating stimulants (Monday: caffeine, Tuesday: Nicotine, etc) to reduce/minimize tolerance.

Cross-tolerance will make this pointless. You can avoid tolerance by not taking stims on weekends and taking off a week every month or two. A few weeks at a time during vacation probably works just as well. I went on for years with no noticeable tolerance by following a schedule like that. Then there are supplements like magnesium, zinc (dopamine synthesis and NMDA antagonism) and NAC (limits dopamine and prevents neuronal damage) which slow down tolerance development. I'm talking real stims. Nicotine is almost useless and caffeine becomes useless too quickly no matter what.

>>9967 Out of curiosity, do you feel like crap on your off days?

>>9969 Not at all. I actually like that I don't have to do anything productive and instead enjoy my free time doing whatever I feel like. Sometimes I actually do productive things during those "vacations" too, but then it's a hobby and not work. As long as you keep your tolerance in check and your dosage under like 50mg/day ((m)amph) there shouldn't be any kind of withdrawal like effects. YMMV, but that schedule works for me.

>>9986 Interesting. Sorry to bombard you with questions. I have felt a significant increase in productivity when using caffeine before it’s effects wear off. Do you feel this increase of productivity on the stimulant you take? And how does it compare to caffeine?

Yes. I also started by experimenting with caffeine pills in the beginning. The problem is the duration is just so short and almost complete tolerance to the effects develops within a week. But then getting off it again is literally a pain with bad headaches for a few days and then the cycle begins again... So for short term emergencies it's usable, but that's it. I eventually went on to experiment with amphetamine and it was essentially the same as the first 1-2 days of using caffeine but much longer lasting and more clearheaded. On caffeine it always felt like my mind got a bit hazy and it just felt a bit soykafty in terms of body sensations. Not at all the case with amphetamine. I was lucky to have found a source selling pure stuff. At some point the guy even had the phosphate salt, which was amazing. Also unlike caffeine there is basically no tolerance to speak of in just a week or two. It just keeps working reliably every day. I always use a scale and fill up gel capsules or just some toilet paper so this is probably very different from what would happen to someone who binges on it for days. But I personally never felt the urge to do that. I like sleeping. Even then, at some point tolerance slowly becomes noticeable. Upping the dose 10-20mg at first isn't a big deal, but after that it's just pointless and a waste of money. Which is when I came up with that 1 week off per month schedule. Unlike with caffeine it's not painful and I don't notice any difference from baseline so it's not hard to do. Since regular amphetamine is so difficult to get in any reasonably pure form I had to switch methamphetamine eventually. I had my doubts at first but as far as I can tell it's literally the same thing but with twice the duration. It's not even stronger or subjectively any different at all. I was surprised. The same seems to hold true for any ugly side effects. It appears to be as (un)safe as adderall is. I still have my teeth, at least. As long as you're mindful and take it in a controlled manner from the start it's unlikely to become a problem. If you can get a script even better, but that's not what makes or breaks abuse, IMO. YMMV, of course.

>>9965 For me with my Vyvanse, tolerance isn't an issue at all. It keeps working, the euphoria just goes away. Which is a good thing in my book, because the euphoria is so distracting and makes me wanna abuse my meds. Maybe it's different for non ADD people, but I still get all the benefit of my meds even though I have tolerance.
Koichiro · 2022-03-14 02:17
>>10329 How long have you been taking Vyvanse? Been on Adderall a year, and the euphoria you speak of died for me about 3 months in. Took magnesium/l-tyrosine/zinc almost daily and still built tolerance on 30mg IR (3x 10mg daily). Now it's just something I use to function. Even when "abusing" it, I can't hit that euphoria anymore. Not sure if you're headed for a crash yourself or if Vyvanse is sufficiently different (or if I'm just a fool).

>>10329 lmao in true ADHD fashion I have misread your post. Disregard, I guess.
Fred Nurk · 2022-03-14 03:11
what exactly do you want in terms of improved cognition? processing speed? working memory? fluid reasoning? delayed recall?
Chani · 2022-03-14 04:16
>>10347 >lol processing s p e e d really, though, if you aren't prepared to make more careless mistakes but faster, your productivity is going to suffer. stims don't make you smarter -- just faster. rotating stims won't work but combinations can synergise. also: baking soda potentiation, avoid citrus. etc. sublingual to get the max out of your script. speaking of which, why tf do people bother insuffulating? worst route of administration in terms of both hassle and absorption rates imo
Emmanuel · 2022-03-14 12:22
just buy pure amphetamine i got it for real cheap (white and has no smell - obviously you need to dry it out first). I do 7-15mg and redose few times a day, does wonders for my motivation. On weed or opiates i would waste my time doing nothing, but on amphetamine i can read or program for hours with almost no interruption, and literally everything is interesting for me

>>10329 >>10333 That's why taking breaks is important. But as long as it still works and you're happy with the results, close enough.
BloodCat · 2022-04-20 16:52
>>10348 >why tf do people bother insuffulating? much faster onset than the oral route, at least with meth. taking the drug orally may take 45 minutes to kick in, and that could vary wildly based on how much you've had to eat. insufflation produces predictably strong effects in under 10 minutes, every time. the duration is slightly shorter too, which may be preferable.
