Alcohol

What the fuarrrk do people enjoy about drinking alcohol? I have been taking drugs since I was 16 but didn't touch alcohol until I became 18 and I really gotta wonder what people enjoy about it. It makes it hard to think straight, I have coordination problems and in general it's not fun at all.
Lady Jessica · 2021-12-15 09:45
it's a social lubricant. That's basically the only real use for it.

I like the strong flavor and the fuzzy warm feeling it gives you. As for the buzz i like the dreamy sort of way it alters perception. I dont like the stomach problems and headaches it gives me later on.

Yall should drink wine. Good wine is delicious in of itself and is great for pairing with food. I like to relax in the evening with either a glass of wine or a glass of vodka with ice. Takes the edge off, makes me ruminate, and sometimes I get a bit impulsive and do something that I have been putting off (e.g., start a grad school application). I prefer it to weed because I can still "think" and I can still retain my appetite and self control. People say that alcohol kills intelligence, but from my ancedotal experience weed ruins your memory and clouds your judgement and cognitive abilities. That isn't to say moderation isn't important. I don't understand mainstream drinking culture, i.e. drinking soykaf beer/alcohol for the sole purpose of getting "wasted bro". If I'm going to inebriate myself to the point of delirium, I'll take edibles instead (if not pyschedelics)
Hitomi · 2021-12-17 00:38
Alcohol is very set and setting dependent for me. If I'm in a soykaf mood and drinking alone, all I notice is the negatives and it amplifies whatever negative mood/emotions I have. The only use I get out of it in this state is a dirty sedative/anti-anxiety effect. In the right setting, it amplifies positive moods, quiets my autistic mind, lets me get lost in an exaggerated sense of self, and increases my desire to socialize and connect with others. Besides GHB, it's one of the more recreational GABAergics for me.
Fred Nurk · 2021-12-17 07:57
>>9773 That's pretty standard. Alcohol takes restraint off, and amplifies the mood. I like this about it, as it lets me explain my problems more clearly, without tiptoeing around the issue. I also enjoy drinking with my buddies and breaking out in heated debates, on wether the FN 5.7x28mm is a good cartridge, or things like that.

True. Now, guess what would happen if you would legalize any other drug, completely, then engrain it's use into society for a thousand or so years. Guess what, it'll be exactly the same. People do stupid soykaf, regardless of the drug they use. The only difference is, how much they manage to do before they crash, and how much resistance they can put up to r4pe and r0bbing.

It's the sad part of being the dominant species on earth, there's no real predator to help with natural selection on humans. I think it's only popular because of inertia and because it's legally available everywhere. There's nothing it does that other substances don't do better and with less impact on health. Most notably GHB is very similar in how it feels and how it affects people, including the multiple stages from slight tipsiness to coma. Major differences are that the high feels cleaner and that instead of a hangover you wake up well rested and refreshed. IIRC there even are literal alcohols with similar effects that are safer to consume. >taste Bullshit. Smokers also say that about smoke, but truth is it tastes like soykaf and they're just coping. Sure, a cold beer can be nice now and then, but it tastes the same without the ethanol and for drinks where it's important as a solvent/carrier for flavors you could just substitute it for something else.
Liet Kynes · 2022-01-29 11:30
>>9968 Taste actually is a big reason, its definitely an acquired taste (think of the average teenager's reaction when they have their first beer) but it is a taste and a large portion of the flavour or maybe rather the texture of alcoholic drinks is the alcohol itself, NA beer doesn't bite quite the same for example, you have to reacquire the taste and it takes a few days I am >>9961 now on Day 21 and I'm currently enjoying a non alcoholic Heineken because I really like the taste of beer but it took a few goes for the NA version to feel "right" to me, even the best NA versions taste slightly different I think a large reason for its popularity is also its extreme ease of production and the variety in it, you can make booze from virtually anything with basic equipment and a clean environment and you can get lots and lots of different variations relatively easy, there's a huge amount of novelty in alcohol you don't really get with other drugs imo, at least not as easily consumable and producible ones I will say now that I've been off drink for a while the taste of the alcohol itself compared to the same beverage but non alcoholic is actually quite disgusting, I had a mouthful of actual beer the other night by accident while out with friends and it tastes fuarrrking acrid and cloying, I guess I like the taste of beer except the actual alcohol
Netrunner · 2022-01-29 11:35
>>9968 Additionally, on your point about smoking, I think it actually furthers the thing about taste The flavours of different alcoholic drinks as with the flavours of different cigarettes only matters to people that use them, the substances are too foul to non users for differences in flavour to matter When I was smoking I did actually care about and enjoy the difference in flavour between Lucky Strike, American Spirit, JPS, Marlboro etc. and could tell them apart by taste "texture" and the smell they produced, having quit smoking 4 years ago all of them smell like the same absolute ass now and even quitting a strong mouthful of second hand smoke has a disgusting taste and makes me gag I think its the same with booze, when you're habituated to the actual taste of alcohol it stops being a problem and you can compare the different flavours ontop of the booze on on their own, when you don't drink the taste of alcohol dominates over everything else and renders any drink non enjoyable.
Noodle Soup -1/7 · 2022-01-30 02:20
>>9999 >when you don't drink the taste of alcohol dominates over everything else and renders any drink non enjoyable. I haven't drinked at all in years and i must agree, anything with the slightest amount of alcohol is non-enjoyable, and the alcohol taste predominates over everything else (and i'm talking about stuff with just a bit of alcohol)

Re alcohol though I think this is true about the overwhelming quality, though when I was new to alcohol I did enjoy the taste and smell of the ethanol, just could hardly tell the difference between the liquors.
Wintermute · 2022-01-30 04:22
>>9968 >>10006 I'm also a non-smoker who loves the smell and taste of cigarette smoke. The nicotine buzz is the reason why I don't smoke. Alcohol taste wise, I used to mix two shots of everclear into a bottle of gatorade and that had a good taste. Better than any beer, wine, mixed drink, or champagne I've ever had. Other than that, I never found a good tasting alcoholic drink
fsociety · 2022-01-30 08:26
>>9968 >Sure, a cold beer can be nice now and then, but it tastes the same without the ethanol the reason it tastes good is the same reason it has ethanol. The reason alcohol-free beers aren't as good is because they have to modify the fermentation process, you can't just filter out the ethanol and leave everything else the same. anyway, ethanol doesn't even taste that bad. When it's cold I love drinking really strong liquor, not to be drunk but for the warmth & heat from drinking it.

>What the fuarrrk do people enjoy about drinking alcohol? They think they enjoy it but they don't. As a soykaffaced asshole who stopped drinking a month ago, people who drink often don't drink to enjoy themselves. They drink because there's no other motive to go outside and hang out with people if there is no alcohol, it becomes like a social norm for them. Maybe mistaken people who haven't the habit thinks they're going to enjoy themselves, then they drink 10-12 beers at some party and wake up destroyed the other day. The only thing that makes them overthink the shame and headache the other day is that everybody was wasted, people made out, "funny" stories about irresponsible destructive behavior, etc. "But everyone was wasted bro, pay no mind." In most cases is a social contract of not giving a soykaf for a while then acting weird later. You get to the point that you wouldn't stay at any place outside your home long enough if booze isn't involved. Alcohol brings the worst of you in a playful way at an early state of intoxication, then, if you are unfortunate enough to be like that, your actual psychological shadows comes to life and soykaf happens. Alcohol is soykaf. Fake relaxation, fake courage, fake socialization, artificial "openness" that leads to retarded social behavior. Want social drugs? Smoke tobacco and drink coffee. People shouldn't get along while drunk. I could get mildly inebriated drinking half a bottle of wine or two great beers to harmonize with food, but I know my drunken self would just want another one. In the end of it all it's just cheap, dirty catharsis all the way. As some anon ITT pointed out, it's a drug for normal people. If you ain't a normal user, alcohol will lead you to nasty paths. I only smoke weed, drink coffee and smoke tobacco now. Also, weed isn't a social drug to me, I only smoke at home. And Ayahuasca at religious gatherings, but I honestly wouldn't consider it as a simple recreational drug.

>>11257 Booze doesn't actually address anxiety though, it just acts like anesthesia and stops you feeling it in the moment, it is no more a solution for anxiety than morphine is a solution for a broken leg. If you keep pumping pain killers the underlying problem gets worse and you also get an addiction that is more dangerous than the thing you were dealing with in the first place. Its a massive cliche but Sobriety gives everything alcohol only promises, my anxiety and self esteem issues are far less severe when I'm off alcohol, and skyrocket back up when I start drinking again. Partially that's because I'm not doing something that makes me feel like soykaf and destroys my health, and partially because I have the physical energy and extra free time to do things that actually do fix anxiety and confidence issues.

I'm sorry that you don't enjoy the simple pleasures of fermented grain, fruit, potato, or sugar-cane beverages lainon I for one enjoy a scotch on the rocks from time to time.

>>10994 Was sober until 9th of December when I went on holiday again, as it was a singles holiday and all of the socializing was built around drinking, enjoyed the scene while I was away, really good time, yadayada. Been drinking regularly since I got back as it was Christmas and I figured it would be OK to do so until New Year's, (not had a binge or episode of blackout drinking so far, mostly social with a few nights light drinking at home while playing games and reading) Had two good nights out and haven't had a bad episode happen while actually drinking yet, but starting to experience horrific anxiety, insomnia and bloat the morning after and while sober, look like I've been floating in the river for a few days this morning,. Also noticing more and more thinking about when it's acceptable to start drinking again and the amount I'm drinking is ramping up rapidly, when I had the first beer on holiday it hit me like a sledge hammer, now a six pack over a few hours barely touches me. Quitting again today. Guess I can drink while out of regular life once or twice a year, but need to quit immediately once home and can't drink regularly or I'll go into a slide again. Don't really feel like I'll struggle to stay off it again to be honest. I think I'm literally half the posts in this thread at this point, nobody else on here likes big posting? Alcohol culture in Austria is trash btw, Beer was soykafty and Schnapps mostly tastes like dirt water or cheap alcopops with no good middle ground, disappointed too as I'd assumed it would've been like Germany.

I've never had a reason to drink alcohol and similar to every other drug, every user I've found wants to push it on me. Or they're just a general condescending asshole who thinks me not drinking is an infantalizing trait. I don't care what other people do but they seem to want to make sobriety a big deal. I don't get it.

well, you don't need to get drunk to enjoy alcohol, for many people it's just an addition to other activity, for people who have tried other drugs it may seem less appealing because it just doesn't feel as good as other things, alcohol is also legal and easy to get in most of the countries, i also prefer other substances but i also enjoy a drink when just chilling on a pc or even getting drunk with friends from time to time, also most people don't even think about trying illicit drugs since most of the society is pretty anti-drug, people are just scared and have a lot of misconceptions about other substances and that's why they choose alcohol
