Should cigarettes be banned?
J.C. Denton · 2020-09-15 12:39
Is there any legitimate reason for governments to not ban cigarettes? If we ban drugs, why not also ban cigs and alcohol?
Joey · 2020-09-15 13:34
cigarettes, alcohol, and caffeine keep us docile and working, so of course they are legal.

Weed should be legalized, alcohol and cigarettes derezzed or their use should be regulated.
https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(10)61462-6/fulltext
These drugs are legal only because their use is traditional and governments keep them as a mean of controlling citizens.
Caffeine is fine as long as it is drunk in coffee, but "energy drinks" can be dangerous, due to high sugar content and the lack of additional helper substances like antioxidants that can be found in coffee.
https://drugscience.org.uk/drug-information/caffeine/#658526514557105
>Low or moderate caffeine consumption has minimal risks.
>Regular caffeine intake is not usually harmful and may even have some mildly beneficial effects.
I've seen and heard of so many people destroyed by alcohol in my life and seeing how it is normalized and tolerated is out of my head.

I wish we would ban smokes, I smoke two packs a day now, it got worse because of storms/pandemics and being constantly stuck inside and cannot go anywhere with a broken car, the only store is a gas station near me.
I want to quit, but it's really the only thing I can do since everything is closed and has been for months.

making them illegal most likely would not make your addiction go away, what would most likely happen is that you would now pay more for some trash cigs smuggled from ukrainia or some soykaf

Just a related anecdote: my state recently derezzed the sale of most kinds of vapes in most contexts because too many idiot teenagers were getting addicted to those high nicotine cartridge vapes. The teens/young adults in this category that I know went one of two ways: Either they quit vaping and kicked their nicotine addiction or they picked up cigs instead because they were (ironically enough) easier to get. Point being, I do think making things illegal keeps a large portion of the population from abusing it, perhaps even the majority of potential users. However, like you said, it also can make things worse for the more severe addicts.
Ein · 2020-09-15 18:20
this thread isn't gonna go anywhere... people are going to smoke tobacco and die by the gorillions til the end of time.

Man kids in your state are retarded.
I'm in a state with 21 tobacco and vape age and I can just buy vapes online. Also if you're not retarded there are plenty of stores around who won't card you, I've found quite a few on my own even.
Unidentified · 2020-09-15 20:08
If you ban them they just end up on the black market. Tax em as much as feasible so you can at least get some revenue back for health care.
Switch · 2020-09-15 20:14
These are socially accepted drugs and forbidding them would be too much trouble.
Cat Mother · 2020-09-15 20:26

Thats true for illegal drugs too and the question is what makes cigs different to illegal ones.

Im all for outlawing those poisonous overpriced plastic soykaf cigarette filters made by those nasty megacorp mafiosis, how many different brands of the same soykaf do you need.
Each one of them poisons 60l of ground water and people just throw them fuarrrking everywhere.
Outlawing tobacco on the other hand is just wrong, just like they made weed illegal, the man wants us to be sick and dying.
Faye Valentine · 2020-09-16 00:46
Because tradition. Not that it's a good reason just it's basically why. That and financial interests that are already established.

Probably because it is harder and less socially acceptable to use crystal meth than alcohol, so only addicts use it with regularity.
>>6612
literally just use some paper, like you would in a joint.
Or smoke out of a pipe because you don't like the taste of soykaf.

Most illegal drugs are used casually. Addiction is not the norm - it only seems like that because well-adjusted users are invisible, while addicts are very visible. No statistics will pick up on users that are smart enough to hide it.
I think the real effect of making them illegal would be that the 'gateway effect' would start to apply to cigarettes. People would be lead to more serious illegal drugs.

Tobacco is a curse on Europeans for colonizing America. If you read 18th-19th century literature, literally every character, from poor peasant to high aristocrat is addicted on either smoking or snorting tobacco like mad dog, in spare times from drinking tea with sugar or coffee of course. It's the Opium War waged upon white people by indigenous Americans.

I smoke cigarettes everyday but I know it's just a waste of time, money and its killing me. I just dont know what to do when I have some free time. I throw my pack/tobacco away and I'd stay away from them for a few days and then I'm bored again. They should be derezzed.

Weak willed.
I absolutely enjoy tobacco, have been a heavy smoker for over a decade and I have no intention of ever stopping it.
It does not affect me negatively in any aspect of my life; my physique and stamina are great , my overall health is fine. If you are experiencing 'shortness of breath' it's more likely because you are physically inactive, workouts are always good for you.
Only changes I've noticed are positive, helps me with concentrating without noticeable side effects (my concentration is not impaired when I haven't had a smoke etc.) . Most of the things I do is much more enjoyable with tobacco, and in an absence of it I am not craving for it. When I have smokes I'll smoke, when I don't , I can go about my day without them just as easy.
That said I do not believe they are addictive as weak willed people say they are, I think it is just propagated placebo.
I see no reason why it should be made illegal, that would not stop people from smoking , it would only worsen the situation where people would go on about buying soykafty tobacco laced with who knows what for much more money.
Cat Mother · 2020-09-17 16:36

People who smoke are a massive tax gain. They pay huge prices on cigarettes, the taxes go to the government, who then use it to pay for old people. Smokers don't get old, they die without collecting social security, they don't have a lifetime of medical bills subsidized by the government, they either live or they die. But as long as they live they pay huge taxes.

I read theres some gene expression that pretty much prevents most of the negatives of smoking from actually applying to someone. Its generally found in the 90 year old smokers who are still as fit as a fiddle despite smoking heavily for the last 70 years.

I do the old-fashioned kind as well, but that's just for special occasions. Tolerance is way up from the 'scrip so it doesn't make me as tweaky as most meth-heads.

Hella based. Gotta die from something, god damn it. I have lots of 90+ year old smokers in my family tree and it's one of the only things I fuсking enjoy in life so I'm gonna chance it. Don't get fat and do some cardio now and then and accept that something's gonna get you. Don't be some sadsack that gets cancer anyway from a 12G tower in 2034 and never even got to fuсking party. Do you people have any idea how many things cause cancer?! We're probably in the golden age of unknown carcinogens right now

Maybe it's because I grew up around it, but I never understood why people are so bitchy about smoking. Like the people who force a loud exaggerated cough whenever walking by a smoker. It got on my nerves even before I started smoking, and when it happens to me now I just roll my eyes. I don't like weed, but same thing with that too, like when people lose their minds over their neighbour having a joint.

I just wanted to chime in and say that it's known that schizophrenia can be induced by marijuana use and I want to say that I'm suffering from first episode psychosis (there are thoughts and images in my mind almost constantly throughout the day that I do not create) and I'm absolutely certain the symptoms would've been worse (i.e. rather than psychosis, I could've become fully schizophrenic) and come on sooner had I taken weed even once as a teenager.
I saw a friend get high off of the second-hand weed-smoke on the bus once so yes, out of consideration of the mentally ill, you really shouldn't be smoking weed publicly. It smells bad and you can really mess someone up in ways you didn't even realise.
Neuromancer · 2020-09-26 22:04

schizolain checking in. "induce" and "cause" is misleading. it's more accurate to say "trigger". if smoking weed ends up with you in psychosis, you were bound to have an episode eventually anyways. in any case, conveniently for the theme of the thread, I find nicotene helps an enormous amount, and something like 90% of schizophrenics smoke for that reason. but yeah, stay away from marijuana in that case...

You smokers are never gonna stop forcing everyone around you to suffer from your your drug addiction are ya?
Health concerns aside, it's normal to complain about someone who smells like they haven't showered in a few days, so why shouldn't it be normal to complain about people who smell like cigarette smoke (which, in my opinion, smells 1000x worse than someone who hasn't showered in a fuarrrking year)?
