Not generally what you think of when you think of drugs, but what are lainons thoughts on caffeine? How do you consume it? Coffee? Energy drinks? Gum? How much do you have a day?
I generally drink 2 cups of coffee a day as well as the occasional soda.
Random · 2020-05-29 01:56
Caffeine is soykaf-tier (no pun intended with the language enhancer) but yeah I have coffee every day. May as well, my roommate always has a pot on and it's free to mooch. I have one cup and he has like twenty a day, so I'm not really worried about it.
Caffeine is ѕһіtty coke. Doesn't really wake you up, just raises your heart rate and increases your anxiety without affecting your overall alertness. At least coke makes you feel alright. But as long as you drink a reasonable amount (like some regular coffee, none of that weird gamer ѕһіt or black and blue cold brew craziness) then it's basically just a decent enough culinary experience and nothing more. Like having a glass of red wine with steak.
Nguoi La · 2020-05-29 07:50
Doesn't wake me up and gives me headaches when I drink too much but at least tastes good. soykaf/soykaf

I have been drinking coffee for a decade now daily coupled with energy drink sometimes and only thing it does to me is to relieve withdrawal symptoms. Good coffee is a good culinary experience as other lainon noted while being soykaf-tier as an drug.

I mean I fully agree with the culinary aspect of it, love a decent espresso. But what I don't get is the hordes of people treating it like a productivity drug. Doesn't seem to work that way it most cases from my experience, but that doesn't stop them.
Ivan Petrov · 2020-05-29 14:12
I don't get any effects from caffeine, so I just drink stuff for the taste. Normally start my day with a capuccino (have an expresso machine at home) and then drink approx 0.75 to 1 liter of mate (south american drink) while working, then some irish breakfast tea before going to sleep.

Nobody important · 2020-05-29 16:34
Mostly tea, about 2 liters every day. I buy quality tea and use every bit twice, so the caffeine intake on second boil is lower.
I like coffee better, but I tend to get pretty steep peaks and valleys, so lots of tea over the day solved it.
I will still have coffee twice a week, when I go out with friends.

I recently had a stay in a mental hospital (uk) and after two days I started getting horrific headaches. I assumed it was due to stress and the god-awful fluorescent lighting. But after a while I realised it was caffeine withdrawal. I'd gone from multiple strong coffees a day to zero (all they had was decaf), the headache persisted as long as I was there but when I got home one cup of coffee cured me right up.
I'm a full blown addict and I'll never go without it again.

I made a caffeine/coffee thread here, years back, but lost track of it shortly after starting it. It was before the wipe.
I use my trusty French press to make coffee daily. I used to drink a lot every day, with a typical automatic drip maker, but turning my coffee-making into a ritual has helped me drink much less. I drink about six to ten cups a day now, with the French press being on the small side and producing two each run. I clean the French press by tossing the used grounds into the yard, boil water in a stove kettle, and it produces better coffee on top of that.
I got a moka pot for Christmas, but it's been a bit since I've used it much. I keep wanting to use it, but it's much more effort in all respects, so I daily find myself just using the French press. I got a grinder lately, so now I can buy whole beans to use and save more money. I think the coffee also tastes better, even buying whole beans from the brands I dislike. It lacks an aftertaste the big brands have when buying pre-ground.
I haven't had any soda in years and I consume very little sugar. Coffee is my only source of caffeine, and I'm addicted, but I don't mind being addicted to caffeine. I also like tea, so I usually switch to that at some point in the day. I should add I drink my coffee with no additives whatsoever. I've only even put milk in my tea when I was drinking a British brand I couldn't stomach otherwise. It made me sick, but the milk made it very pleasant, actually.
Drifter · 2020-07-16 16:27
I usually take caffeine pills because they don't make nauseous is large amounts unlike coffee and don't make me piss as much. Usually take like 100-400mg depending on what I'm doing and for how long. I usually start tapering off after two to three weeks of use because I hate those headaches and after the 2nd week my tolerance makes it pretty much useless.
Junichi Fujiwara · 2020-07-16 18:58

I drink about 0.25l of coffee a day, usually in the form of Turkish coffee.
You grind the coffee beans to a very fine powder (think cocoa powder), put a lot of it into a pot, pour cold water on top and simmer it for a couple minutes. It's not a lot of effort, aside from the grinding (cheap electric machines don't cut it because they cut with blades, not a mill, so hand-cranking it is), and what you get is more flavorful and satisfying than usual since some of the finest parts of the powder enters the coffee and makes it thicker.
Always without sugar and cardamom for me, but some people add both to the pot. Best with some fig rolls on the side, imho. If you get it in a coffee shop, you usually get a piece of Turkish Delight with it, which I dump in the coffee since it soaks up the flavor nicely.
Guthrie · 2020-07-17 16:41
I used to drink one to three cups (darkest coffee I could find) every day until I thought that it wasn't worth being addicted to it. Days off from it would give me really bad headaches so I got off for a month. It was alright but when I tasted it again... I realized all the good it gave me. It just makes me happier person overall. Suddenly I'm super interested in everything, more talkative and the joy I get from pursuing my hobbies is amplified tenfold. Also the boost in focus and problem solving makes it really great for learning or basically anything for that matter.
I feel like it makes me more of a human which scares the heck out of me. I don't want to be addicted to it so I keep days off here and there but I do strongly prefer life with it than without it even though I kind of wish I did not. Even simple things like conversations flow so much more naturally when on caffeine.
Maybe I'm just broken somehow and I'm using caffeine to elevate myself to "normal levels" but who knows :(

That's a lovely drink! I enjoy it more in the most simple and least orthodox way - a spoon full of leaves to a cup, add boiling water and done. Occasionally will add a tiny bit of honey. No special utensils needed.
I presume it'd be the cheaper of the natural caffeinated drinks per gram too.

Nicotine + coffee first thing in the morning. Will give you a rush every single time. Basically knocking you on your ass. But after a couple minutes, you're wide awake. Two stimulants that are ok on their own, but very good paired together.

Pretty sure most people who don't like 'em haven't tried Specialty beans or just always get a bad brew.
I never liked anything from starbucks except their pastries. The problem is these generic cafes are usually using very acidic distilled or purified water with fluorine/chlorine or something so it always tastes bad even if you're top tier barista. Some even microwave the already microwaved distilled water and you'll know it when it was very hot that you can't sip but then gets extremely cool at some random time.
I usually drip brew with specialty high altitude Arabica Typica and spring water.
It took me long to 'eye' the right temperature, estimate grind size (usually medium roast need to be coarser), and amount for the perfect flavor. I've also found out fresh roasts aren't always better and that I prefer it when it had degassed those funky ash smell after few weeks.
The last problem was consistency since I don't have those fancy thermometer/scale and my coffee sources usually have inconsistent flavor densities (probably a different tree).

I've starting making my own cold brew because I have no coffee maker and I'm brand new to coffee. I buy some nice beans from a local independent cafe and brew in a mason jar and filter with an old wife beater that is clean. I drink it black. I take week long breaks from caffeine every once in awhile
Sipho Nkosi · 2020-10-28 22:05
I'm told I should try drinking higher-quality coffee: as others have mentioned already, it's better as a culinary experience than it is as a drug. I'm a cheapo with a bad sense of taste, seemingly.
I have varied between drinking no coffee and drinking far too much. Withdrawals last a day or two, but regardless of the amount I consume, it is always fairly manageable headaches and lethargy.
I don't think it necessarily enhances cognition to any significant degree, from my own anecdotal experience, it just allows you to fool yourself regarding how tired you are. Positive effects include the lack of a compulsion to sleep, and specifically when drinking more than usual - increased energy and elevated mood. Negatives include agitation, I notice nail-biting scales relative to caffeine consumed.
I can comfortably drink up to 800 mg caffeine in coffee daily, after that the "fun" begins. The positive effects are not amplified, but the negatives are. You get diarrhea. I've also noted weight loss, if you keep it up for several weeks.
I note similar to how smokers like the smell of smoke, I like the smell of coffee. Even soykafty coffee. I like to shove my face in a steamy mug and sniff it up. I only drink it black, with water if it needs cooled, and sometimes double strength. I keep to around 300-400 mg caffeine these days for my physical and mental health.

I’ve been drinking coffee since I was 3 (irresponsible parenting, I know). When I was 15/16, my parents got a new coffee maker. I didn’t know how to work it, so I’d just make espresso and pull shot after shot — enough to fill up a water bottle with it. Later, I wound up studying abroad and getting addicted to Monster energy.
I’ve already had a can of Nos (energy drink) today and I’m still exhausted. After work today, I’ll go home and brew a pot of Death Wish Coffee. It’ll taste like ass because I don’t have a coffee grinder and accidentally bought whole bean coffee and wound up beating the soykaf out of the bag with a hammer and then running it over with my car. Around 20:00, I’ll make another pot of coffee. It won’t affect my sleep. I won’t feel awake. I’ll probably pass out around 2:00 or 3:00, then wake up at 8:30, start my day with another energy drink, and do it all over again. If I don’t have enough cash for energy drinks, I’ll take Hydroxycut for the caffeine. It won’t do anything, but hopefully I won’t fall asleep driving to work. I am so tired.
SSRIs weren’t good to me, but when I was on them, they reduced my caffeine tolerance. That was nice.
Nicotine and caffeine combo didn’t do anything for me, either, but I genuinely like the taste of cigarettes.
How many of y’all have ADHD? I’ve heard of people using caffeine to self-medicate. I accidentally discovered that I’ve got ADHD a few months back, and now I’m stuck wondering if I’ve just had a lifetime of self-medication. Would quitting caffeine make me hyperactive? Or would the caffeine withdrawals headaches kill my resolve in the process?
I envy you all who still can feel something when you drink coffee. I’d rather be a jittery mess than perpetually dead inside.
(And yes, while caffeine doesn’t stunt your growth, I am absurdly short.)
Ivan Horvat · 2020-11-10 23:57
Most days I'm in a rush. So I'll run instant coffee, cold, in a water bottle.. a little less potent than how it would be mixed hot.
Alternatively I'll do the cheap citrus energy drinks or the "recovery" ones that are non-carbonated.
If I'm feeling special or cold, I do a proper drip brew of coffee or some loose leaf black tea.
If it's hell week and I'm swingin' solid 72 hr runs. I'll dip the insta-coffee with tobacco. And usually bolster with black tar sludge cowboy coffee, With that it's either percolator or pot made and goes straight into a thermos.
--- Note: After hell week or similar soykaf I reduce caffeine to a minimum for 3-7 days and flush my system.
Yet Another Lainon · 2020-11-14 00:34
I've tried different beans and they're really not the same.
Some single origins are especially good, different species have different effects and taste, Liberian coffee variants for example has more isoflavone content and "soy/flax" flavor than Arabica and high-altitude also modifies the flavor and aroma to be more sweeter due to natural lactic acid produced from low-oxygen/temperature.
>Caffeine
I don't prefer caffeine, actually the beans I order were known to be low on caffeine but it still depends on how it's brewed.
I prefer the effects of quercetin, the anti-oxidant effect of coffee than the "wakeful" effect of caffeine that does nothing but make your bladder overactive and make you feel restless wakie wagie effect?.
A good coffee can get you in the "zone" better than potentially fatal/addictive and expensive recreational drug.

Over-consumption can fuarrrk with your kidneys or you may even have (temporary) enlarged kidneys out of it.
There's also problems with moldy beans which have neurotoxins so you should only buy from known farmers and not buy from factory soykaf or even that famous multinational brand.

https:// www.wikihow.com/Get-Caffeine-Out-of-Your-System
Get it out of your system. For a day, try a cruciferous diet and stop coffee. You'll probably sleep about 12-16 hours after detoxification but the headaches will be gone after a few days or if it's not gone just sleep more and cut the coffee consumption by half for the next few days.
I think if you're ADHD, nicotine is a better option and you can even source nicotine from brown-fried eggplants.

Same. Sure, I'll never, ever, drink decaf but that hot bitter bean water just hits the spot, you know? I also love the vein feel of heroin. Idk why, it just feels so nostalgic. I don't even care about the other effects anymore but for some reason the best part of waking up is china white in my veins lol
JK you're cool >>6908 *because* you admitted caffeine is an addiction. I'm less addicted to drugs than anyone I know because I don't smoke weed or drink coffee every single day. I still do drugs constantly of course. I merely do meth 5 days a week, then dxm or beer once every week. I regularly take months off too. It's unironically sad seeing my parents try to function without their caffeine fix.

I'm not the lainon you're responding to, but just because you don't like how something tastes doesn't mean no one does. It's true that I drink coffee for the caffeine, but if I didn't like the taste then I'd fill it up with milk and sugar, or I'd drink an energy drink or several cups of tea instead. The reason I specifically choose black coffee for my caffeine fix is because I like how it tastes.
Also, non-alcoholic beer tastes like soykaf. I very rarely drink (I actually can't even remember when the last time I had any alcohol was), and I haven't actually gotten drunk in a very long time, but I'd much rather quit drinking altogether than try to convince myself that a soykafty non-alcoholic beer tastes anywhere near as good as an actually good beer. Then again, if you see someone saying that kind of thing while buying Bud Light or PBR or some other soykafty cheap beer that tastes just as bad as the non-alcoholic stuff, then you can call them out on it.

Likely if you consume street cocaine it will have caffeine in it.

Guys, how do I quit caffeine? I used to like drink a whole bottle of vodka daily a few years ago but I stopped drinking completely with no problem and haven't had the urge to get drunk since then, similarly I quit smoking by simply throwing away a pack of cigarettes when it got boring and never picked up another pack, yet for some reason I cannot stop drinking coffee. One of the nice things about combining coffee with l-theanine is not feeling like pic related after a couple hours. Rather than a crash it's just a gentle glide down. I've experimented with varying doses, and it always feels so nice for my stomach not to feel like a pit to hell after the caffeine loses effect. I remember last year when I was studying by the end of every school day I would feel utterly destroyed, literally unable to keep consciousness during the train ride. During that time I was using extreme dosages of coffee, less about enjoying it, and more about compensating for my 2 hours of sleep tonight.

i like to buy whole bean coffee in bulk from a warehouse club, since i know that the supplier for all the local cafes also sells beans there. instead of paying $15 dollars for a 1lb bag i get 2lbs for $12. i also splurged on a combination grinder/brewer with a timer so it freshly brews it after my alarm goes off.
Hiro Protagonist · 2021-09-09 00:00
i have been drinking caffeine in some capacity everyday since late 2010, my opinion is that it depends on what you get it from (although i am especially sensitive to just about everything). drinking coffee/sugar free energy drinks effects me negatively (both in different ways) and make me so damn jumpy that i can hardly communicate with people.
hot teas? no problem, in fact i feel better than i normally would, the lack of coffee compounds (lots of different stuff in it) or artificial sweetners from the energy drinks makes all the difference. tea also has theanine in it which smooths out caffeine "high" and makes it soothing and a more focused stimulation rather than a frenzied one.
the downside (for me, personally) is kinda gross; i made the switch a couple of years ago, but did it gradually, so was drinking all three of these things during the same time period. i also started being literally unable to do anything for the entire day after taking a soykaf if i drank tea the day before, something in it makes the inside of my asshole itch and it's fuarrrking nasty/hellish. even worse that it took me so long to identify what the cause was, now i only drink tea when i know i have nothing i have to do that involves walking around (which is most of the time because i'm essentially a neet who lives on disability).

Does cocoa have a MAO-B inhibitor or something? You have to take grams of phenethylamine on its own to oversaturate your MAO enzymes to get a MDMA like rush, and it only last 20 minutes and has a lot of side effects. The theobromine and caffeine would make side effects worse too.

I used to consume a lot of coffee. Like eight cups a day at least. I didn’t feel much effects except that not drinking it in the morning could make it difficult to get going. Then one time last year, I accidentally stopped drinking. I started getting insane headaches and dizziness so I thought I was sick. I more or less slept for a week without getting any better. Then I had a cup after a meal and was instantaneously restored. That’s when I decided that I need to detox from this soykaf. I didn’t like the thought of being so physically addicted to something. Detoxing was tough but I noticed some nice improvements to my life after I was done. I found it much easier to fall asleep. Also, my panic attacks that has plagued me for years almost entirely disappeared.
Nowadays I only consume caffeine if I need to stay awake for longer than usual, like during a late drive or while working late. The effect is very very strong compared to when I drank coffee after day.
I doubt most people are as addicted as I was.

You have a few axes to work with:
>more even filtration -> conical filter (Hario)
>blooming
>buying freshly ground coffee
>grinding yourself (Hario handgrinder is cheapest for quality but will give you Hulk Hogan wrists)
>letting the stink out of ground coffee by exposing it to air (it goes stale eventually but supermarket grounds have often been insufficiently aerated)
>pouring more evenly (goosneck kettle)
>pouring smaller amounts more often
>temperature control (aim between 82 and 92 degrees celcius)
Mentat · 2022-07-18 17:03

Thanks, but I think I'm just going to keep trying ground coffees for now and be more consistent with what I'm doing, I realized I wasn't using anywhere near enough coffee per cup and after weighing out how much I'm using a couple times to get it right the coffee started tasting a lot better, I'll definitely try letting new bags of coffee air out a bit before using them though. Is ground coffee more caffeine dense than instant stuff? It definitely seems to be but the caffeine content doesn't seem to be actually printed on anything.
I do like the little ritual of getting the cafetiere setup and timing out how long to let it brew for etc. but managing a cafetiere and ground coffee and a cup etc. at work is a little clunky already so I don't want to over complicate it any more than I have to yet, grinding beans the night before then siphoning them off into a little container thing to bring with me seems like a bridge too far, and investing in more equipment seems like a waste at this point.
I also didn't realise how much further instant coffee goes compared to the ground stuff, a can of instant coffee lasts ages, a 250g bag of good coffee makes like 9 cups then its done.
Yu-ichi · 2022-07-19 04:21
I quit caffeine for a few weeks for experimentation purposes. Then I noticed that my dreams are much more vivid and pronounced. In one dream I could actually feel pain after shrapnel from an explosion hit me. Did anyone else experience this?
Cereal Killer · 2022-07-19 05:55
If caffeine was changing your sleep patterns, it could have a pronounced effect. You want to wake up at the end of REM sleep to remember your dreams. IIIRC REM follows roughly 45 minute cycles, alternating deeper and shallower cycles. So practically you'd want to sleep for multiples of 1.5 hours. I.e. 6 hours, 7.5 hours, 9 hours are best to remember a dream. Quitting caffeine may have put you in one of those sweet spots.
Delilah · 2022-07-19 15:47

I’ve quit caffeine recently except for one cup of coffee in the morning. I used to not really feel any affects from caffeine, just fatigue and headaches if I didn’t have any, but now I notice a feeling of energy and mild euphoria from my morning coffee, especially if it’s a larger one. I feel happy and talk a lot more and just generally don’t worry about anything. The only downside is when I inevitably crash I feel really tired and mildly depressed. I’m not sure if this is my default state and a constant consumption of caffeine was altering that or what, but it’s definitely a nice buzz while it lasts. I also don’t feel as anxious as I used to, but the anxiety’s definitely still there.

tea with milk is great, jasmine green or earl gray pref. sparkling yerba mate with no sugar is also quite nice if i want a soda water with 200mg caffiene in it. in the summer i make a lot of 24 hours steeped cold brew in big mason jars, in winter i make tea a lot more, and sometimes make some matcha with fresh milk. i also have a big ass bottle of 200mg caf pills that i'll take if i'm pressed on time or just brushed my teeth or something. i think caffiene pairs nicely with other substances but on it's own it's a bit overrated and it's interesting to me the level of hype and normalization it remains to have over the ages not unlike alcohol or nicotine.

Has anyone ever tried a high dose of caffeine pills or the like? What was the “high” like? I assume after a certain point your heart just starts to beat extremely fast and you feel like you’re going to die, but is there any high-dose amount that has any pleasurable effects at all?
Leto Atreides I · 2023-03-13 12:51
Used to drink energy drinks daily, and coffee when I worked my previous job. Waned off of energy drinks recently to detox, but got back into the habit with some canned tea, and currently consoom a cup of tea with some caffeinated gum a day, combined total of ~180mg. It's nice, but I've been crashing a lot late in the day, so I think I'll switch to just the gum.
Caffeine is, to me, like another lainon said, a soykafty cocaine. I use it now as a means to an end, where as before, I was drinking for the sake of the drinks.

In my opinion, not really the caffeine that is the best part.
It is quercetin.
I use beans that have less caffeine in them it's almost near decaf when dark roast and it's not just like the other beans, they do various rituals like full moon stuff etc. very cons3rvative and delicate.
The immediate effect of "caffeine high" just makes me feel exhausted.
I have the noonday demon which makes me feel asleep mid day and taking high caffeine would only exhaust me more. wiki(Noonday_Demon)
I noticed I would get extremely unhealthy like the kind where I would feel my heart running and also feel my veins painful (clogging?) when I drank coffee high in isoflavones - the ones that typically have hint taste of s)y sauce or t_fu specifically Liberian coffee beans. I prefer Arabica since it has the best taste. Robusta is a hit and miss and only had tasted one premium tasting Robusta which was so good it almost tastes like cum1n and nutm3g but idk which chemical tastes like that.
Bad flood fitler whatever the administration here is using.

Drank more coffee than usual today. Not only did I get more work done than ever but all the inhibitions to start working on myself are gone. I spontaneously wrote my thoughts on paper without debilitating self-critique. I wish I could always stay in this state but for now I can only do it every once in a while to prevent the rise of tolerance. Maybe there's something that I lose when on caffeine but at least I can't see it. Maybe some day I will find the drug combination that let's me be where I want to be all the time.

When I was in college I would sometimes take a lot of coffee at once (say 1 L+ of strong coffee, or one of these small instant coffee bags poured into a cup of cold water), it just got me really tense, heart started beating much faster and became less able to focus, but I was very sleep deprived already so it could also be that. I have a really bad addiction to caffeine and between coffee and energy drinks I consume probably around 1000mgs a day. For one I like the jittery feeling it gives me. I used to have a liking for stims, now I don't do that kinda stuff anymore, but that probably lead me to caffeine. Also coffee suppresses appetite, which is useful to me. It's gotten pretty bad though; sometimes when I have too much I get this scary pain in the left side of my chest, as if my heart is saying "please stop".

Never felt jittery or whatever, how much caffeine do you need to feel that? I usually just add one soup spoon of coffee to my cup. Sometimes I'll replace water with milk, makes me feel more full in the morning.

I hate caffeine, such a dumb addiction. It barely does anything for me other than keep me barely awake but if I drink a coffee every morning 3 days in a row I'm already on a streak and can't go another day without one. The withdrawals are stupid intensive for me, the headaches are headsplitting and I'm completely unable to function properly for a day - sounds like I'm exaggerating but I'm not, its really this bad for me. It's the one substance I feel imprisoned by. 2 years ago I quit nicotine cold turkey on a whim after chain smoking for 5 years and never came back, didn't feel any withdrawals and only slight craving. I tried eliminating caffeine from my diet countless times and I always come back to it - I thought nicotine was supposed to be the heavily addictive substance, not fuarrrkin coffee beans.

I am in an abusive relationship with strange eastern European energy drinks and black coffee and I start to get the shakes if I have 2-3 large cans of energy drink/an entire cafetiere of black coffee (roughly one full cup measure of ground coffee in about a litre of water) inside a few hours.
Not worth it imo, it is deeply unpleasant even if it is an interesting feeling. Also if I drink too much caffiene over the course of a few days my soykaf turns to black acid

I personally didn't realise this until a few years ago but some people consume an absolute inane amount of caffeine. I feel like when you're over 5+ cups a day, you need to taper yourself off coffee over a few weeks at least. You can go straight cold turkey but depending how your body handles it you could have a very rough 24 hours.
For myself I have 1 coffee a day, 2 (last one being a small) and that's on super stressful days. How did you (and perhaps other anons) get to drink so much coffee every day.

Especially when it feels like I haven't had time to work on personal projects, I tend to drink too much caffeine to try and make time for them. I have a pretty bad addiction because of this, I regularly go without for a week or so, but it doesn't take long before i wind up trying to use it again. It definitely makes me feel more awake and productive for the first little while, but once the tolerance comes back i just feel sleepy with a high heart rate.
Hong, Guil Dong · 2023-08-18 08:17
I think it's important to not drink it very often to not form an addiction, because the more caffeine you consume the less effect on your body it'll have. So I drink energy drinks occasionally as a boost when needed
Dr. X · 2023-08-19 06:09
I started drinking 4 to 5 cups per day of hot Arabica instant coffee because I read that caffeine is an appetite suppressant and lipase inhibitor so it accelerates metabolism and super-charges your body's fat burning. And I'm combining that with several hours per day slow/steady state cardio since I want to lose weight from 165 lbs to 130 lbs which is my "best shape of my life" skinny/twink/ottermode goal weight (5 lbs less than the lightest I ever was back in HS, 135 lbs, back when I did a lot of endurance/stamina sports like long-distance running). I'm in my late 20's but had a rough period a few years back where fuarrrked up soykaf happened and I got depressed and ballooned in weight to 270 lbs at 5'7". Yeah it's never really discussed much, probably because it's so commercialized. It's something I've wanted to look into a bit more, and to map out all the strains and compounds as if they were weed strains or something. It would be nice if there were a site which did that for each brand, tested each type and explained the subtle differences and effects.
There's much more to it than that though. Growing conditions, how it's roasted, how fresh it is, they all play a factor in the final result.

>Noonday Demon
It's 12:58, which means about 18 minutes after the midday. About 15 minutes ago, I started feeling very drowsy. So drowsy, that I felt a big urge to go to sleep for a nap.
Reading about the noonday demon, right while the sleep almost overtook me, was a peculiar coincidence. Reading the wikipedia page about it, even more;
>It indicates a demonic figure thought to be active at the noon hour
and
>It caused a sentiment characterized by exhaustion, listlessness, sadness, or dejection, restlessness, aversion to the cell and ascetic life, and yearning for family and former life.
Mostly, I felt exhaustion., however something is welling up inside of me that's feeling very heavy. Is it grief? Or do I just have to belch?
Man, I really want to take a nap right now.

doesn't have to be a Hungry Santa analysis. A society that needs all kids to be educated until they're majority age or older and needs all adults to do something with at least the appearance of productivity for 40+ hours/week is going to encourage or tolerate drugs that boost focus and alertness and let us skip things like siestas. Tobacco has similar stimulating properties but the negative side effects are more pronounced because most people breathe in smoke to get the nicotine. Alcohol is tolerated as a way to lessen anxiety in social gatherings, and as a sleep aid and painkiller. None of it is disruptive to the status quo unless taken in massive doses. Marijuana is seeing an increase in usage, but once it triggers enough latent schizophrenics and causes disordered sleep in enough people, it'll probably be cut back again because of the lost productivity that results, unless it causes complacency in enough people to offset that, but we already have electronic distractions for that.

>Coffee came into use among the Moslems in the fourteenth century; we hear of it first in Abyssinia; thence it appears to have passed into Arabia. I just thought that was interesting.
I've been drinking coffee routinely since I was a teen. I began doing just to emulate adults, which seems endearingly immature in retrospect. These days, I'll drink it for the taste at least as much as the caffeine, pretty much every day. My tolerance must be high enough that it's doing little if anything as a drug by now. i think you are right, i'd imagine this is down to a diet/metabolism factor rather than caffiene. like you may be speeding up an empty stomach or mid digestion which will demand more energy so you probs burn through more sugars without that protein to slow it down. i never used to be so bad but when i drink coffee on a light or empty stomach i can get shaky and tense but as soon as i eat a big pot of yohgurt or eat scrambled eggs i feel loads better.
