Do you like Yerba Mate?

I used to but for some reason it started giving me digestive problems / bloating. I drank guayusa instead, but it sometimes causes drowsiness.
Stick to guarana seed now.

Nah, I prefer green tea instead of yerba mate.

I've never gotten around to getting leaves and brewing it myself, but that's something I've been meaning to do for a while. I've tried the canned iced stuff and I like the taste, but despite the caffeine content it always makes me feel really sleepy for some reason. Maybe that would change if I brewed it myself - I've found that with black tea, home-brewed hot tea always gives me way more energy than bottled or canned iced tea, so maybe it'd be the same with mate.

I like mate, I occasionally drink it. It's preferable over coffee since it doesn't fuarrrk up my stomach or cause me to have anxiety.
Wintermute · 2020-07-19 23:24

was lead to believe that it did not contain caffeine

I love yerba for the energy, focus, and euphoria. Lately I've been brewing a batch in a gallon jug and adding a little lemon juice to sip on over a few days. Highly underrated plant IMO despite being more mainstream now.

it's more caffeinated than normal tea

For some reason I'd been under the impression that it was more caffeinated than coffee, but I did some quick research to confirm that before saying anything, and apparently I was wrong. I have no idea how trustworthy that website is, but it's probably more trustworthy than the random hearsay that led me to that conclusion in the first place.
I guess if you want to ween yourself off caffeine gradually then mate could be a good intermediate drink between coffee and tea. It's certainly not good if you want to quit caffeine cold turkey though.

Cejrowski wykurwiaj,
I kinda am trying to get info yerba. And have a question. Does the quality difference between high quality yerba and yerba you can get at discount stores really that big?
Hououin Kyouma · 2020-07-21 08:40

I think it is, or maybe not, but i think it depend on the cuantity of yerba mate in the mate (obvious)
>>5561
maybe you dont do it well, remember to follow the steps and dont full water the mate, if it makes an puddle, then you have screw it.
https://turismo.buenosaires.gob.ar/en/article/step-step-how-prepare-mate
dont forget to mantain the inclined angle of the mate. also you can add a shell of any citric to leverage the stomach issues, also very recommended lemon or orange.
tn13 · 2020-08-27 19:50
just to add more quality, some people put coca leaves or weed leaves to add some energic or digestive effect.
Also if you want to quit coffee you can try coca leaves infusion or decoction, if you have access to them (good luck).
Noodle Soup -1/7 · 2020-08-28 00:49

One thing to note is that people report slightly different effects from drinking yerba maté than from drinking green tea, although the exact differences have not been well documented. A common misunderstanding exists that this necessarily means that yerba maté does not contain caffeine as a major psychoactive alkaloid. Caffeine is a xanthine. Yerba maté contains two other xanthines (caffeine-like compounds) theobromine and theophylline that have their own effects. It is very possible for different experiential effects to be the result of different levels of these three compounds or of other variables, including differences in dosage, differences in accompanying minerals or related alkaloids, expectations, taste, smell, etc. Mint tea or gum, for instance, can be stimulating or refreshing partially based on smelling the volatile fragrance oil. It is not known exactly in what ways yerba maté is experientially different from Chinese teas or what accounts for those differences.
