Are there any otc antidepressants (or any home remedies/herbs with antidepressant properties?)
I don't want to go through the trouble of seeing a doctor.
Fred Nurk · 2019-06-17 07:25
St.johns herb is used for treatmeant of depression, but the wild variety has so little content its almost useless.
You can also go down the deep well that is cannabis and smoke weed every day, sure beats being depressed.

Not really.
Therapy will do you worlds more good than pills.

weed can make some people unstable though. Also fuarrrk antidepressants

By solving what has you depressed in the first place. Otherwise anything anti inflammatory will have some help as will meditating and just having a better diet by cutting back added sugar, avoid MSG, as well as get enough folate and b vitamins in your diet and get some exercise. That's just my over simplified version of my knowledge. Don't bother screwing with your serotonin system unless it's an absolute must. Also cannabis is terrible for depression since it increases odds of depression later in life. You basically become dependant on it
Otto Normalverbraucher · 2019-06-26 15:57
>You basically become dependant on it
only some people. Cannabis isn't very physically addicting like alcohol or tobacco, it's a lot easier to quit.
Ivan Petrov · 2019-06-26 16:37
Caffeine and tobacco both have small amounts of MAOIs, which have been used to treat depression prior to the popularization of ssri. More powerful MAOIs have serious side effects but they were extremely efficacious in many cases. I'd caution against the use of cigarettes but snus and chewing tobacco have proven to be substantially less damaging (though still pretty bad for you).

Dependency isn't the same thing as addiction. Your body naturally has cannabinoid like substances in it. When you are repeatedly exposed to these external cannabinoids your self made ones reduce production. It's like how taking melatonin pills every day for months can screw up your melatonin production in your body. Also it's in addition to using a drug or medication as a crutch. It helps short term but unless you develop coping methods and ways of changing circumstances you won't be able to tolerate stressors without cannabis.

Nicotine damages the circulatory system in long term use and in some studies shown to slow development in social problem solving and coping. So good short term but terrible long term. Caffeine increases anxiety among other drawbacks. There is better methods. For example turmeric is a suspected MAOI and known antiinflamatory. It has been shown in one study to be more effective an antidepressant than SSRIs.

There is tobaccos nicotine now, grandpa. Zyn pouches or vapes.
I'd recommend Zyn since it's cheap.

if you're withdrawing from benzos and have caffeine it can induce panic attacks for a long time, like a hour or more.

highly reccomend you do go through the trouble of seeing a doctor. worst case scenario you dont like the medication, dont like how it makes you feel, and you stop. best case there truly was something off with your brain chemistry, and you just opened up a whole new world. you are going to kick yourself if when/if you decide to go through the trouble is 20 years from now and it works.
my experience is therapists are very respectful if you dont pursue medication, of course they will continue to reccomend it if they really do think its a good fit. They can reccomend supplements too just like this board can only accurate to how they think your depression/works manifest.

I spent a few months microdosing after a big mushroom trip. It's shifted my perspective on reality enough that I can honestly say it's definitely helped me cope with depression. I don't have it anymore, but couldn't say if it went away naturally or if I medicated it out.

>worst case scenario you dont like the medication, dont like how it makes you feel, and you stop
Know a dude who recently mercilessly overdosed like a dumbfuck because he didn't feel it worked and figured he should chug more. The interesting thing is side effect didn't stop when he took the meds off. Gonna be interesting if it subsides with more time.

Well from my anecdotal experiences with an ex who has bipolar, the worst case scenario is that the meds help a bit with really important symptoms but the side effects fuarrrk with your life to no end and basically turn you into a zombie, some kind of passenger to life with no will or control over how you feel and respond to things.
That was kind of a Sophie's choice situation that haunted her for the better part of a decade. She kept trying new meds, new dosages, new combinations, stuff on the side to manage the side effects--but it kept spiraling into this weirder and weirder place. For the worst part it was like she was tripping and on downers at the same time 24/7. Every day, all day, for months. Had to go to work like that. Huge mess. Might have been a quack doctor, but we tried several.
In the end there was no solution. Mental health treatment in our era is somewhere between a working solution and the ice picks they stuck in your eyes and stirred up your brain with in the 1950s. Hell of a lot better than it was, but still pretty awful.

Look into NAC, helped me heaps,
Its cheap af, has gone through countless trials.
NSI-189 is another unknown gem, which has more mixed responses in comparison and doesn't have too long a history, so tread carefully.
High CBD only oils and caps are obviously a good option too from own exp.
Microdosing needlepoint once a week for a month, ALWAYS reagent test!
Out of all the above, microdosing once a week had more of a noticeable immediate effect on me which lasted days after.
>>3978
Still have yet to take shrooms or any other psychedelics aside from LSD, how did the two compare in your experience if you've microdosed Lucy?

Known multiple people who have disclosed how much they despised antideps weeks after having gotten on them, never heard a positive story.
Have a vivid memory years back of a close friend who tried to end themselves on a day out with a small group who abruptly attempted to run into traffic.
Fortunately we grabbed her before it was too late.
Should be enough for anyone to get the message, avoid at all costs!

NACA (N acetyl cysteine amide ) may hold better potential for psychotropic effect than NAC because it better crosses the brain blood barrier. It is less studied though.

>Are there any otc antidepressants
Definitely, I will list them in order:
1) Keto diet (or go full meat-only instead)
2) Healthy exercise (not your gym soykaf, run in the forest or hunt, or whatever)
3) Bigger goal in life (and I mean not a goal of tiny squishy apartment in the city, but something that really means something for you)
4) Healthy relationships (family, church)
5) A good motherfucking sleep (go to bed at 10pm, wake up at 5am, or even earlier)
6) Don't eat/drink sugar. Ever
7) Try to get out of the city as much as possible
8) Stop using internet for entertainment purposes
9) Drop any media entertainment altogether
10) Start a family
Oh wait, you won't do any of what, you just need a magical pill that will solve all your problems. Good luck with that.

Metaphorically, I don't want to be led to a nearest train station to jump back on tracks and get to the city, I want to fix my ATV to get through that uncharted land and live happily far from your anthill. Stay myself, not join the content army of clones with chemically happy families droning to churches with blank stares and forced smiles.

There is nothing wrong with attending church, but you are free to be an edgy atheist or something. Just don't fall for the "apartment in the city" meme. It's just not worth it.

Your post is full of things that work for only some people. Different people need different things. I know if I lived by your standards my life would be way less personally fulfilling than it is now.
The real way to get happy is to look through all your interests to find what makes you tick, and then to go all out with what you like.

This. The idea behind antidepressants is that you take them in combination with therapy (this should be the case, but often isn't).
I've been on SSRIs and I didn't like them.
They didn't make me happy, just irritable.

He only got one really negative reply. The other one was critical but not really hateful
As for why his post got criticism, it's because it gives off the vibe of "my path to happiness is the path to happiness, and everything else is wrong".

Sorry, I've not personally tried it. NACA is more potent than NAC and apparently this means it's safer because a lower dose is required to achieve the same effect.

ive also seen many cases of depressed people surrounding themselves with depressed people, and these people not liking when somebody gets better. Of course thats reductive, but somebodys over emotional behaviour changing to somebody who is in control of emotions becomes "zombie like behaviour" to themselves or their friends, the sort of crazy period where you have to readjust to new feelings or a new way of perceiving things becomes evidence to not go any further because change is reasonably frightening. The person isnt actually taking the medication as prescribed, or isnt following through on their end with therapy (they are going but taking none of the advice/not implementing anything being shown to them). Or sometimes it really is a horrible fit and the system fails them, and sometimes somebody extrapolates these one or two people into "a majority of people I know" when perhaps they know many more who they arent aware even take medication. Regardless I dont need to do any assuming or finger pointing to point out somebody going crazy running into the street is an extreme case and probably even studies by the most heavy critics of anti depressants wouldnt list this as their concern with the drug.
you guys seem to have this idea that antidepressants produce such a drastic change that the person wont even be able to make the decision to stop if its affecting their life negatively. Im not sure what kind of anti depressants we are talking about here but most peoples biggest issue with them is they cant tell if its working or not, or if its just placebo.
I dont think its unreasonable to say im wary of what other people who are friends or partners with depressive people have to think about their changes in mood or behaviour. We often surround ourselves with people we enjoy as they are in the moment, not how they will be on antidepressants. If anything take this as me projecting not accusing, if one of my friends when I was depressed drug addict started taking antidepressants or even just going to therapy I would have been able to provide what sounds like a perfectly reasonable sounding account of how they affected them negatively, when most of those negatives would have in fact been progress towards positives. Thats more for first poster. Second poster youve got me beat, il make sure to stop taking my medication so I dont run into the road.

seeing as i never witnessed her taking the meds, you're right i shouldn't just have assumed these were the cause.
but thinking back now, i think there were times where she skipped taking them as she said they made her irritable, anxious and gave her serious mood swings as a result.
i guess if she had done this the once, then clearly this should be written off, but im certain this happened a dozen+ times, so something was up.
i really wish your case was reflective in what i've seen first hand, but in reality it isn't.
i should note here, it wasn't just her, but a family member plus another close friend who described extremely unpleasant side effects as a result, none as close to the first case i described.
out of the two, the counseling noticeably helped them significantly more than popping the antideps, so i think as much as op wants to avoid confronting a professional, this seems the best option aside from the vast mentions of the alternative remedies which shall be hit and miss.
