How to stop smoking weed?

Rick Deckard · 2018-11-05 02:11
How do I stop smoking weed if I have literally zero will power and a constant source of free weed? Is like I want to stop smoking weed and at the same time didn't want to stop.

I see a lot of people rave about this book but I haven't read it: https://www.charlesduhigg.com/the-power-of-habit/

You don't have zero will power or you wouldn't see a problem with it nor would have made this thread. For starters though you need a good reason to. Nobody addicted to something ever quits just because they abstractly understand it's good for them. You have to really and concretely or intuitively have a higher reason that you see as more valuable. I don't have a problem with weed, but for stims I can't meditate on them. I see meditation as key to my growth, and that's the only thing that motivates me to stop. This is why you see most anti addiction programs advertising a higher power. The only real way to stop is to see it as worth it, and if you have an internalized concept of some higher power thats literally the most important thing in the world thats almost a guaranteed motivator to quit. You need to find something you inherently love and see joy in that weed prevents you from doing, and it also needs to be something that isn't just going to go away and then you relapse. Hence why they say you can't quit for anybody but yourself, if you quit for a family member and then they die you just are going to go back to it.
BloodCat · 2018-11-05 16:15
>>2792 I don't really feel like I've a reason to quit at all. Both my parents are junkies, and I mostly smoke with my mom. I've tried quitting so many times, but I always end up relapsing and getting more hooked than before after the relapse. And when I'm clean, I end up fapping daily as a substitute. I feel sick and tired of daily weed smoking for 4 years.
Dr. X · 2018-11-05 16:54
do you mostly smoke alone or with other people? or is it an even split? in my experience, its relatively straightforward to stop smoking if you're always the one to initiate it. just set rules for yourself ("i won't smoke before 8pm") and come up with rewards or diversions to help you stick to them. basically, it works like quitting cigarettes. (ironically, i used cigarettes as a crutch to quite smoking weed... i don't recommend this, but trading one addiction for another is a legitimate tactic. if you don't mind nicotine addiction -- or already have one -- you may want to try vaping. it scratches a similar itch for me anyway.) the hard part is when you're constantly being offered weed by other people, especially if most of your friends are stoners and most of your entertainment involves weed. in this case what you need to do is tell them directly that you think you're smoking too much and you're going to quit for a while. they'll inevitably forget and offer you hits, so its important that you build up the willpower to say "no thanks, i'm good" when someone's holding a joint in front of you. this bit is important: if you're going to cheat, don't cheat in front of your friends. if you say you're quitting, but then still smoke with them on occasion, they're going to think "oh i guess anon changed his mind" and continue to sabotage your efforts (not maliciously, of course.. but that's the result). if you can get to the point where you _only_ smoke on your own, it will be much easier for you to control. also, don't avoid hanging out with your stoner friends as a means to quit. they'll probably resent you for it and may even try to sabotage your efforts in an attempt to win you back. you can still hang out on the couch passing a joint around, just pass it without taking a hit. doing this proves to your friends that you are both serious and non-judgemental. it says "i am doing this for myself, and i value your friendship and support".
SHODAN · 2018-11-05 17:28
Honestly, if you think your source of free weed will remain free for a long time, it's probably worth to just take what is given and not stop.

>>2788 If you are really serious about this, please read this. "it seems to me that the very essence of freedom lies in understanding the whole mechanism of habit, both conscious and unconscious. It is not a question of ending habit, but of seeing totally the structure of habit. You have to observe how habits are formed and how, by denying or resisting one habit, another habit is created. What matters is to be totally conscious of habit; for then, as you will see for yourself there is no longer the formation of habit. To resist habit, to fight it, to deny it, only gives continuity to habit. When you fight a particular habit you give life to that habit, and then the very fighting of it becomes a further habit. But if you are simply aware of the whole structure of habit without resistance, then you will find there is freedom from habit, and in that freedom a new thing takes place. It is only the dull, sleepy mind that creates and clings to habit. A mind that is attentive from moment to moment—attentive to what it is saying, attentive to the movement of its hands, of its thoughts, of its feelings—will discover that the formation of further habits has come to an end. This is very important to understand, because as long as the mind is breaking down one habit, and in that very process creating another, it can obviously never be free; and it is only the free mind that can perceive something beyond itself." >>2817 By the way, it has nothing to do with will power, control, resistance. Also, the will to be free from habit itself becomes a barrier to the observation of nature of habit. Sounds strange I know.

>>2788 Ignoring your presumably drug-induced freakout... I recommend Allen Carr's book The Easy Way to Stop Smoking. It's not entirely appropriate for your problem, as it was written about cigarettes, and the style makes it seem like the worst kind of self-help book, but I found it to be a valuable tool in reprogramming my conception of addiction in general. It basically just says that there two steps to quitting: quit and then enjoy your life. Everything else is unnecessary or harmful. The book as a whole essentially dismantles objections to this simple formula and hypnotizes (largely through repetition and positivity) the reader into accepting it so that it can be enacted. I've also had success with putting a barrier between the concept of "desire" and that of "want," where desire is the suggestion of the "undermind" and want is the decision of the "overmind" between suggested desires. Under this scheme, anyone who wants to stop stops and anyone who doesn't stop doesn't want to stop. I'm not entirely sure if I discovered a buffer that already existed psychologically or if I created a new one, but this has apparently improved my ability to resist temptation.

My waifu in the same boat. She's trying to quit, but there is a void in her that hurts too much. So she smokes. What I'm trying to make her understand is that she has to take care of that void, not avoid it.
Yet Another Lainon · 2018-11-13 20:57
>>2858 >>2866 I actually think this "void" concept serves to legitimize the troublesome behavior. Whether you smoke or don't or do just about anything else, you'll have bad days, and you'll probably feel unfulfilled. The question is really "is this behavior counterproductive to realizing my goals?" If the answer is yes, then the behavior should reasonably be abandoned no matter how miserable you'll be without it. I've found stripping things down to practical terms more useful than dramatizing (where the so-called "void" is an obviously dramatic metaphor).
Trinity · 2018-11-13 21:44
>>2875 As someone who is also currently trying to cut down on smoking, I find that this is the most effective way to consider it. Thinking in the context of your goals helps you to realize what is productive and what isn't. If I feel a "void," it's usually just me failing to come up with something better to do. For me, void often just denotes sobriety. It's counterproductive to associate a comparatively high-functioning state with a word that refers to emptiness. Setting goals is probably the most important thing one can do to get over dependence. Try to think, "I want to get good at x, and being high is not the best way to accomplish that."
Junichi Fujiwara · 2018-11-14 16:45
As others have said in this thread, it is the mechanism of human habit that is holding you back. >Is like I want to stop smoking weed and at the same time didn't want to stop. Your frontal lobe and your limbic system are responding differently. The limbic system is an ancient, animal part of your brain. It forms your habits. It is a very cemented part of the brain because it's so old. Your frontal lobe is the human part of your brain, it plans for the future. It is fairly new and not as strong as the limbic system. Your human side sees the pattern of endlessly smoking weed and wants to do more. You want a different future deep down, but the habit part of your brain has trapped you in a reward cycle. This is why humans are capable of wanting to want something. "The Power of Habit" has been mentioned in this thread. It is a good book on this topic. "Willpower Instinct" is probably better, it's more accessible, has more practical advice, is rooted in a lot of research and real-world experience, and is hard to put down. A bit of practical advice too: if you're on a journey to improve yourself, track your journey and reflect on it regularly. If you're just a little better each week and don't let yourself slip, you will see incredible things.

>>2926 It worked for me is all saying. Quit weed (6 years) with cigs, quit cigs (4 years w overlap) with vape, quit vape (<1 year) out of boredom with it. Vaping nicotine is a lot less detrimental to your day to day than weed is. If you don't have the willpower to stop directly its a decent trade. Pretty easy to taper off vaping because you can control the nic content of the liquid you buy. Just make sure to get a proper vape and not a juul/phix/etc cartridge thing because those things are designed to keep you hooked (higher nic concentration, similar in concept to nicorette gum making people's addictions worse).

Your subconscious mind is what is preventing you and your conscious mind is what thinks you should stop. That being said, gaining freedom from habits is tough. There may be other things in your life which are triggering your subconscious urges. I would look for things in the environment that are triggers and physically remove them. Environment can be literally anything from the food you eat to the people around you, pretty much anything in the outside world.

A couple nights ago it was like a nightmare irl, thoughts came to me about smoking random dust stuff from my desk hoping it was weed, going stoned to school and work, telling myself that tomorrow I'll do something good but today is relax day. Still cannabinoids and chill feelings in your system. Feels good. Helps with coming off of weed a lot, hopefully you can taper off it a lot easier that way. Alternatively: get a full time job and become so occupied that you have no time to be stoned anymore. If you're quitting by necessity, you're more likely to stick with it. On weekends find a good hobby. Go outside, get into camping, or sailing, or woodworking, whatever. My only objection to pursuing technology related hobbies like >>3313 suggests is you spend a lot of time indoors by yourself, an environment conducive to giving in to your impulses and continuing your self destructive habit. Just say no and get yourself away from it, because you clearly can't handle coexisting with it in your life. Until then you will continue to slip.

Been smoking daily. At this point I'm just depressed both when I'm stoned and when I'm sober. Need to stop saying yes to impulsive behaviours.

>>3254 I'd also recommend this I've completely cut my weed usage with CBD. I don't know how I used to get high every day honestly.

I smoked daily for years. Was smoking 1g of pure THC a day towards the end. Stopping was excruciatingly painful. I had several emotional breakdowns over about a month long period and the only reason I actually stopped was that I decided to improve my life and get a college degree. Going on an extended vacation in another country for a month helped me detox but my god was I psychologically addicted.

>>3552 Its quite difficult to put it into perspective, i will try as best as i can to put it into words. For some time now i am convinced the world is not actually real and that its some kind of fabrication, myself included. As if life is some kind of movie where i am an actor in. And way too much of it is hinted at for to be true. I have this strange feeling like my mind creates my reality, i am god in this world and not at the same time. Oddly enough i did spend a lot of time reading about the occult and all that stuff, the gaian mind in particular. I think i obtained the ability to break trough to some kind of higher intelligence, just like lilly described in his theory of bio circuits. The devine mind talked to me, but i am uncertain as of what to do. I think my current priority ought to be mastering of psychonautics and unlocking psychic powers, but i keep fuarrrking around too much. I keep thinking that the solution to all my problems are in aquiring magic powers and using them. When you go from flying saucers as hyperdimensional beings who manipulate physical reality and crowley summoned them for the lulz, its pretty deep down the well of weird soykaf. The odd thing is i seem to understand a lot more about occult, spirituality, psychadelic scene and all that jazz than i ever did and things seem to make sense, yet they cannot make sense because its all hyperreal. SEL wasnt just a work of fiction as some might seem to think, it was a message from another world, if you follow the tracks deep enough you will see yourself. I came to conclude that the modern world is a design of pure evil to keep our souls trapped in suffering, but ive no proof. Somehow i keep comming across weed, dont ask how. When im really fuarrrked up i enter another dimension in my mind somehow. If i dont get a hit off friends then i somehow manage to find leftovers and smoke them in my pipe. Yet when im not sometimes i get that overwhelming feeling of the world not being real and me needing to take drugs to get to the other side. I cant cope with reality but i cant cope with my inner mind either and especially not what is in between. I dont know how to cope with this, feels like i fell down a spiral of some sort, i think i found another layer above reality. But its so ridiculously hard to belive that somehow mind is really above matter and this world is not real but a projection of a hypereal matrix that can be read/written to across space and time with an embeded collective intelligence. Obviously i dont talk to people about this, i may be nuts but im certainly not stupid, which adds to the mistery to this, since i seem to be one of many brilliant loons who learned the deep secret of existence, which seems the man tries to bury. But now i see its time to kick the habit and get a grip on my life and psyche. Its about best as i can tell the tale.

>>3570 >I have this strange feeling like my mind creates my reality, i am god in this world and not at the same time. i mean this is literally true. everything you percieve is not everything that is there, we are seeing things through the lense of our senses in the most literal sense. And then of course everything we percieve even via our limited senses is warped by perception, you can't witness something without processing it somehow, and that processing is done by your brain. Therefore the world you see is in fact a fabrication of your mind. However you're not fully in controll, no matter how hard you try you can't see infra red light with your naked eye. No matter how hard you try you can't see a chair without KNOWING that it is a CHAIR and everything that CHAIRness implies. You're not psychotic you're just dissociated enough to see your internal processes, which isn't a bad thing but it is annoying being aware of how limmited we are as humans, lucid enough to be aware, but not godlike enough to AFFECT MEANINGFUL INTERNAL CHANGE. Maybe the occult can help you with the second part i'm not sure, i'm yet to find success. Wish you luck lainon.

>>3570 N-Acetylcysteine will help with cravings. It doesn't stay in the system long though so the more times a day it's taken the better just don't exceed the daily safe limit. This is easiest to alter by your daily ability to take them using lower dose pills or a powder so it can be dose changed as needed. This will also possibly help with psycjosis. Cannabis smoking lowers thyroid hormone release so you may in theory exhibit symptoms like hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is one suspected cause of psychosis. However this is unrelated to cannabis induced psychosis because that's caused by a genetic factor. You may want to get your thyroid hormones checked by a blood test to confirm this. This sounds contradictory to what I just said but consider taking CBD oil or pills daily. CBD acts as an anti psychotic. Only problem is it doesn't seem clear how CBD effects the thyroid so I don't suggest taking it forever unless you can't do without it. The reason for this is because your body makes it's own cannabinoids and lowers it's production if external ones come into the body for long enough. Basically if you have any residual THC in your body CBF will help counteract it's psychoactive effects as well as help some psychosis symptoms. Also if you do happen to smoke all that will happen is you will have a more mellow high Consider taking lion's mane (mushrooms) daily. You can buy it as a powder or pill form. It has some possible effect on helping psychosis and acts as a nootropic. If you have sleep apnea keep track if it makes your symproms better or worse because I've heard both. Also be warry if you have allergies it sometimes makes them worse. Keep in mind this is experimental treatment but it beats going on traditional antipsychotics unless you get to the point nothing else helps.

Like quitting anything, figure put the pros and cons of both continuing and quitting, figure out what you want and make a plan. If you keep it intangible("I think I want to quit, maybe") then nothing will happen, and you'll probably not feel great about your results. >I'm trying to quit smoking cigarettes right now(again.) A lot of people say they want to quit when really they just want to establish better habits.

>>3595 If you can't afford supplaments then just make sure you get enough methylfolate (preferred to folic acid), B vitamins, DHA (EPA is fine too), uridine, and choline in your diet. All of these are quite important. You also should avoid any known allergens if you have any.

As someone struggling with addiction the most important thing is to not beat yourself up over it and ruminate on it. First you need to not make anyone deal with it, when you feel like soykaf because of it unless you are paying the person you arent allowed a shoulder to cry on. After that dont feel any guilt about it, move on. I know that sounds counter intuitive but think of your addictive self as this weirdo that kind of gets off on torturing you/itself. Make sure youve made your addiction entirely your problem first though (including aa groups and therapy and what not, things that exist to serve that) because otherwise youl just hurt people and be enabled. It actually helps, and ive been addicted to some soykaf and done stuff on it to myself to feel guilty about. I just say it was a slip up its gonna be fine, if I have to repeat it over and over I do that. And I dont hate that side of me that did it, I just talk to it and ask it why, how can I help? You should already know beating yourself up and torturing yourself hasnt gotten you anywhere and your going in circles right? Worst that can happen is you are going in circles and feeling a bit better. Best that can happen is that when you arent down in the dirt you feel more able to take control and you do. And trust me thats far more likely to happen. Il do you one better though. Im still struggling so il tell you some stuff that I didnt say but people who are sober and doing well have told me . I like intuition and feeling and philosophy and art and psychology and I dont care much for science and rationality and logic. I dont think the world works off those things I dont like, and I used to a bit but not anymore. I really hate them even. Id like to get rid of all that and live in a world thats just intuitive and soulful, but thats not the world we live in. And your safety is the number one priority, if your dead that world cant be anyways. And addiction leads to death, even if you die by old age your life was spent with you in the backseat and you were a rat in a skinner box. I hate that analogy, I dont think we ever are in control, but it doesnt matter. You need to look at what people who got past addiction are doing, what people who are in control are doing, and even if it doesnt make intuitive sense you do it. You need to reframe your mind where the rational conclusion, this person is doing x and because of it is y (which is how I want to be), is more important than your intuition and what seems real to you. That rationality needs to be more real than reality. I dont know where you live, but if you live in any western society your constitution probably has it written in that those who are irrational are beasts and enemies at worst and at best not important. Your the "at best" right now, but who knows whats in store if you continue like this. You need to start reframing things to be about what you "know" (knowledge) makes you happy and safe vs what you feel makes you happy and safe. The people who always seem to be ahead of the game, surely youve noticed, have the ability to follow advice purely off of it making sense and being reputable. They dont have to wait to see it for themselves, they just place that rational brain above their emotions and feelings. Ideally you have balance, at least in my opinion. But if you havent ever visited that purely rational extreme you cant find that balance, you havent explored the other side yet. This is what ive been told again by sober, successful and clear minded people. Now il use my own words as an addict again. Id like to live in a world that isnt ruled by proof and logic, its not that it doesnt make sense to me its that it isnt what seems real. If it did obviously I wouldnt do drugs, if youve been struggling with this for any decent amount of time you know the good feels are massively outweighed by the bad and safety issues. I think we could live in a world where people know this intuitively, but thats not how things are structured. You have to adapt. Again your as good as dead if you dont behave rationally, and dont place it highest. You can always get back in touch with your emotions and find a healthy balance from that place of cold rationality but you cant do anything at all if you are dead or not in control of yourself.

My waifu experienced this and for a couple of months afterwards whenever smoking weed, she would start having mild anxiety attacks. After abstaining for about 6 months she still smokes weed occasionally, but far less in amount and frequency. She gets the same effect from smoking less than a bong in a spliff, than she used to chain smoking about 1g a day in bongs. It's a hard road but the psychs will teach you to behave yourself ^-^

reading this thread pains me because Ive gone through the same recently been smoking weed for 9 years. not daily, but regularly. longest break was 4 months when I was in a place where weed was unattainable (and my job was hard in ways in which having my mind muddled would be disastrous). I was kinda disappointed that my life was not miraculously better at the end of it. I was still drawn to death and socially awkward. I went back to blazing almost immediately what hit me this past summer is how detrimental this habit has been im definitely stupider. my brain is slower, i dont make logical conclusions, i miss stuff, im more forgetful the worst is the social effects though. i cannot be high and talk to people, even friends. my voice sounds bad. i get scared. i make ridiculous assumptions. and they hear it all its hard to stop though. on a nice day with nothing else major to do, why not? it makes the mundane so enjoyable all I know is, I cant keep living like this, cause I will kill myself
