Checked the catalog, didn't see an alcohol thread. What are you drinking tonight anon? For me a glass of 2017 South African Shiraz. $7.49 CAD for the bottle and it honestly doesn't taste that bad. Very smooth without overwhelming pepper.
Debbie Charteris · 2018-09-09 16:12
I've developed a real problem with alcohol. I haven't slept sober in about two months. cheap vodka, cheap rum, cheap whiskey. Burning stuff. It's become routine, a walk to the store every day and bringing a bottle home and finishing it. I wake every day feeling like soykaf, throat burning from acid. There's no joy in it anymore, I use it as medication. I only feel normal after half a bottle. Happy after the whole of it. But it's never enough.
I simply don't know how else to cope.

Pepper is a pretty standard tasting note in Syrah. I'm more familiar with the beer world, but either phenols in the grape, or phenols produced during fermentation could cause pepper like flavors.

There's some truth to it, look at

That being said, just because it's expensive doesn't mean that it'll be free from congeners that are bad for your health. Whiskey gets a lot of its flavor from congeners, so even the high end stuff will be bad for your health.

You have a low IQ. High alcohol consumption is correlated with a lower IQ.
Not to mention that soykaf isn't complicated at all. From a high IQ person, stop drinking nignog. If you must be a drug addict smoke weed and be a high dopamine piece of soykaf.

Alcohol is an NDMA receptor antagonist. NDMA is involved in memory formation. So prolongued alcohol, or drugs like DXM, and ketamine will worsen memory. I think there has been some suggesting alcohol improves memory temporarily in case of events that took place prior to drinking due to the brain going into some loop that makes it better retain info but I am unsure how true that is.

meadanon here. i think i was just really into vikings at some point and learned that mead is hella easy to make. forgot for a few years, but then when i eventually actually took an interest in drinking i remembered and decided to make some. first batch was great, but it was tiny and me and my family disposed of it in a single evening. second batch was way bigger and initially pretty good but something fugged up and it went bad after a few months. i got frustrated and didn't touch it for a good few months, but started a new batch recently, the pic i posted. should be ready within the next week or so.
>safety measures
just the components in a jug with a balloon over the top, placed in a different room that's more similar to a wine cellar. all good and perfectly safe. just remember to sanitize sanitize sanitize everything and i mean everything that may come in contact with the brew.
there's a million and one guides out there for how to do your first batch. just pick whichever strikes your fancy, or suits your supplies/financial situation best.

because brewing beer is fun. It's fairly easy to make a drinkable 8-12% beer too.
Just don't bother with bottling or anything like that. Go straight for a homebrew keg. This reduces labor by 60%+ while improving the quality of the final product. Also works perfect with cider.
Yuki Nagato · 2019-11-19 16:12
>>3911
If you distill at the right temp (higher) basically no methanol will pass over. Plus ethanol consumption blocks the metabolism of small amounts of methanol so it's nothing to worry about unless you really fuarrrk it up. Do proper research, there are plenty of good guides.
Donna Hawthorne · 2019-12-01 16:21
>>4005
I like bottling.
But damn it you're right. Especially for beginners (the people least likely to keg), kegging will reduce labor and lead to better beer.
OTOH, I would figure out fermentation temp control (even if it's just a water bath to stabilize temps, or finding a yeast strain you like that is tolerant of a large range of temps) before worrying about kegging. I think ferm temp is the most important thing, more important to having an enjoyable beer than anything done on the hot side. Hot side process improvements are good for making a consistent beer but you can fuarrrk up a mash or boil like 50 different ways and still make a fine tasting beer.

Vodka. Just vodka. No mixers, don't be a baby. Keep it in the freezer and put it in a glass or just take it from the bottle. I got so sick of the huge consumerist array of various sugary and otherwise terrible-tasting booze. So sick of IPA bros with their skunky, awful, weak beer. Wine is full of crap that sets off histamines and makes your face swell up and gives you heartburn. I'm not gonna do some cocktail fandango or shake some laundry list of ingredients around in a little tin can full of ice. It's a drug delivery system; after a while, you learn to just keep it simple. The eastern Europeans got it right a long looong time ago.
I don't really get drunk anymore, I just maintain a nice, low, steady buzz through life. I don't take the edge off, I keep the edge off. Getting wasted is something I now kind of look down upon. Keep your ѕһіt together at least.

As someone growing up in an anti-alcoholic household and originally keeping to those ideals that was always my argument against it as well. However, once I turned of age I figured I would try beer just for the sake of trying. I don't go to parties and I don't think I would ever drink socially. However now I will have a beer perhaps every two weeks at home and I make sure to set conditions beforehand, such as not getting drunk. I mainly use it as a mood setter, for instance looking at the stars while a bit tipsy or a bit euphoric is quite a treat honestly, but it really is a form of escapism at the end of the day. I have partook in the green færie....well sort of. Technically Absente isn't really absinthe because it has sugar added beforehand making it a liqueur instead of a liquor but that's such a moderate difference. It had wormwood in the version I had so it should count. It has an interesting intoxication that is moderately mentally stimulating so I can see why artists liked absinthe in the past. Interesting flavour profile. Not something that would pair well with food except maybe a biscotti.

I dunno where to ask so I'll ask here, does anybody know why wine gives me a headache while beer makes me feel happy? I know this may sound strange or atypical but every time I drink wine, even a few glasses, just gives me a low to mild (depending on the situation) headache and nothing more. On the contrary when I drink beer, even the most heavy ABV ones, turns me into a happily dizzy state. Why is that?
Fred Nurk · 2020-12-31 21:12
At the end of 2020. Im stuck in a heavy lockdown zone. I cant believe Im saying it. Sounds like a sci fi scenario we would laugh at only a year ago. So Im drinking irish coffees and ale. I hope Ive got enough.

I cant judge but thats way more than I drink. Anything over a bottle of wine or 4 cans of beer and you are in potentially body damaging territory. You should try swapping out the habit for CBD. It stops you craving drugs and drink for some reason.

I've stopped drinking completely, I've gone on and off the idea for years but I've finally just decided to throw in the towel with booze.
I can hazily remember weeks, more like entire months of my life repeating the same motions of getting up being hungover, slouching downstairs, buying a case of beer and crawling back upstairs to down the full thing while staring at a monitor, half glad to be numb and half fearing the inevitble explosion of misery that was always waiting for me once I passed that critical stage of drunkeness, sharper are the memories of lying under a bridge freezing to death and choking down a bottle of whiskey toying with the idea of jumping into the river, trying to ride a bicycle drunk and nearly being instantly killed by a train, putting my first through a wall in a fit of rage, hundreds of mornings waking up after a "good" night out feeling like soykaf and wondering what shameful soykaf I'd got up to the night before, what lies I'd told to whom, what gang of retards I'd gone out with that time.
Even years after I'd mostly stopped that kind of thing and became a more "moderate" drinker, I was amazed how tight the grip alcohol had on me was mentally even though I wasn't addicted physically, how conniving my own mind could be in convincing me I deserved a drink, or that I could only have a couple and not have more, and blowing of training etc. to drink was a great idea, and I think the biggest one is that I'd be boring in social situations without alcohol, that it made me more pleasent to be around, when really all it changed about my behaviour was make me more loudly uninteresting, followed by the idea that alcohol somehow treats stress and anxiety when it really justs pushes back dealing with their causes by however long it takes to sober up.
Only once you stop it do you realise how fuarrrking literally everywhere it is, it sounds stupid, even being interested in addiction already and spending a lot of time wandering around taking places in, I didn't really get how all pervasive alcohol was until I stopped taking it and suddenly had to find myself turning it down every fuarrrking day and having other people look at me like I'm the one that's acting irrationally by taking issue with its presence.
Alcohol must be the must destructive, misery inducing thing I've come across in life aside from my odd encounter with heroin addicts and increasingly spice heads, walking into shops and going into the homes of people I like and trust and seeing literal poison in colourful bottles being treated as if its harmless for grownups and anyone that struggles to manage using it is the problem is uniquely infuriating.
Rant over

lmao when I was 15 I used to buy cigs and booze on the biggest supermarket in my town, all they did was ask "are you 18?" and I just nodded my head. You could buy booze anywhere, the only place that asked for IDs was this big liquor store because parents started complaining about it.

I almost exclusively drink E&J brandy and cheap white wine. Funny thing though, when I was broke I would go to the corner store near me to get pints of korbel for like 4 bucks. I absolutely hate it but brandy and cognac are the only things that dont give me a headache. Apparently though its become like my standard tab almost with this guy, itl be on the counter as im walking up. He waits and sees if I walk straight up to the counter at which point he gets it, if I walk around a bit and look around he will ask.
Today some money cleared and I wanted to treat myself to some hennessey but lo and behold I go up and that fuarrrking korbels sitting there lmao. I dont have it in me to be like I hate that soykaf man, plus sometimes its appreciated as it really is all I can afford. I appreciate being remembered even if its for my times as a broke alcoholic, and so I just humble myself and drink that nasty soykaf like I used to.
Another funny time I was with my long time friend and we walk in and he goes "the usual?" and slaps it down. She already knew about my drinking id always come over to her place with a pint in my pocket but we had a laff about it. Like shed never been in there with me and what if she was my date or new partner or some soykaf and im trying to make a good impression and he just goes "the usual?" and slaps the cheapest plastic bottle of brandy down. Funny guy he makes my day sometimes.

I'm drinking some Brut Dargent (sparkling Chardonnay from France that's cheaply available in my country).
It's pretty good, very easy to drink, not overy rich in flavor though.
I think I'll stick with 4€/L German white whines (Riesling and Müller Thurgau) when I want that sort of flavour).

I drink about once a month or so on average, and usually no more than a bottle of wine or one-two cocktails.
I really enjoy the taste of different Beers but drinking it seems to make me miserable, so I refrain from it.
Never fell into the alcoholism trap, despite having had my first drink when I was like 13.
It's probably habituation, but I do actually enjoy the taste and finer aspects of it, I would probably make a good barkeeper in some subdued speakeasy.
Not big on party/binge drinking, I'm too self-conscious and it usually ends up in misery and awkwardness.
But seriously, what causes people to have a very negative mood when drinking specific spirits, but not when drinking others?
I can understand my thing with beer -I would assume that it does something to my estrogen levels or somesuch- but there's really not that much difference between different Spirits, purely chemically, so how come people frequently say "I can't drink Vodka, Tequila, or XYZ, it messes me up too much."?
Morpheus · 2021-11-03 18:28
fuarrrk I'm itching for some booze so bad right now, day 3 without any and Wednesday is usually my breaking day, I want a beer
I definitely have a problem this is so damn embarrassing
>>9419
It isn't anything chemical usually, its the situations the different things are consumed in and the manner of consumption and the individuals appetite for that type of alcohol.
Someone who drinks 10 beers over the course of a night is going to have a different experience to someone who drinks a pint of straight vodka at the start of the night then only maybe has one more drink during, even though the total amount consumed is technically similar, the effects aren't because of the changed delivery method, window and the mindset that goes with doing something like that.
People that drink vodka & redbull or rum and coke etc. are also mixing depressants with stimulants which is to drinking just alcohol what a speedball is to heroin
I've never had a bad night on whisky for example, but its purely because I don't ever really drink a lot of it when I am drinking the taste gets sickening after one or two measures, whereas beer if the night is short or I don't have much available I can have a good night, but if the night is long I'll nose dive, because I'm the type of drinker that doesn't really slow down as they get drunker.
Vodka and Absinthe are like oblivion in a bottle to me, my sister and some of my friends can have an easy time with them, but I invariably destroy myself with them if I have more than a double of Vodka, I have drank a pint of absinthe before on a bet and felt nothing while doing it then been paralytic and blackout drunk for the next 14 hours.
I couldn't have done the same kind of abuse with beer or wine because I would have been drinking so much liquid with so many calories in it that I would have vomited from overloading my stomach or just decided to stop before I got close.
Beer I think produces bad nights because of how calorific it is and the carbonation, it makes you feel heavy and flushed and bloated, and because individual beers are quite weak you don't treat it with the respect it requires

I really really *want* to like booze but I just can't stand the taste of alcohol. I end up drinking stuff like local hard ciders from local orchards, since I already love apple cider.
Here in Maine the Rickers Hill Orchard hard ciders are amazing.

I'm stuck in this compulsive behavior loop and its really hard to break, I have way too much time alone when its really tempting to just get numb.
I can't really talk to my family, they all drink, some are worse than me and none of them took me seriously the last time I got sober, I did join some forums about it though. I wish alcohol use was viewed like cannabis or tobacco use was here, I'd have all the family and work support I'd want to get off but instead I'm the weird one for not wanting it.
Day 3 again now, just have to get through Friday and Saturday really then the 2nd week will be easier
Cutter · 2021-11-14 21:12
Well none of you care but I have nowhere else to talk about this so fuarrrk you I relapsed on day 8.
I was feeling OK, a bit worried about how the girl I've been talking to (the first one in about 3 years) was taking a bit long to get back to me but otherwise felt fine but then I was driving somewhere to pick up my brother and I remembered something that happened like 6 year ago and suddenly I felt lower than dirt, like a worm or a piece of soykaf.
All of the little happiness in me has drained out, I got drunk again and I'm just slumped here wishing something would happen where I wouldn't have to be alive anymore but without having to cause my family pain, I hate myself I understand why other people hate me but I don't deserve this, every time I try to be better it hurts and I don't have a way out, I don't even have anyone I can talk to other than randoms on the internet I just want this to be over

Any recc's for a neat drinking vodka that's decently available in the UK/Ireland that doesn't taste like piss?
I usually get Stoli but I'm looking try other things as I've noticed it can be a little harsh if you drink enough of it, Smirnoff is fine but it literally tastes like nothing to me which I know is how Vodka is supposed to taste according to some old definition but I prefer something with a little more presence and flavour and for some reason its only 37.5% alcohol now which means it doesn't freeze as well
Grey goose is like drinking nail varnish remover with some artificial fruit flavour in it, I have a bottle of the Haku Japanese rice vodka on the shelf now for Christmas but it is quite pricey and according to the one person I've spoke to that's actually had it before its good but not much like vodka at all.

IMO, just canned beer. It's a common misconception that cheap beer is bad, but here in Germany, i have seen plenty of middle area and expensive beers that taste horrible (Guinness is one example, that stuff tastes like plain bitterness and nothing else). Lidl (German Discounter chain, dunno if it's international) has a very nice beer, that is literally bottom shelf, it's the cheapest beer they got (25 ct per can, 330ml), but really not bad.
>>9715
You're right, vodka is not supposed to taste like anything but ethanol and water. Goes down easily, doesn't make your head hurt, and disinfects wounds when nothing else is there. The 37% thing is a western thing, real vodka has to be 40% vol., not more, not less. For taste, enjoy it like Russians do: at the table, with buddies, and nice, strong food. Black bread, pickles, fish, smoked sausage, smoked or salted meat, that's where the flavour comes from. Russians don't drink fancy spirits, they drink vodka, literally just water and alcohol.

I am drinking a pint of "Rince Cochon", which literally translates to "hogwash". Don't be fooled by the name, it's actually quite good, and not just by cheap canned beer standards. It's cheap, tastes good and gives a pleasant buzz, I can't really ask for more.
I'll have to try some south african wine when I get the chance, some fine vineyards near cape town as I've heard. I've enjoyed all the foreign(italian, californian and australian) wines I've tasted. Granted, I'm french, so I might've been somewhat spoiled when it comes to wine.
>>9913
Getting it from a pub would require revealing my identity and part of my medical record, so that's not really an option. Best I could do is getting a keg, but I don't have room for that in my fridge, as much as I enjoy Guinness and other dark beers like Chimay, which is quite a bit stronger in taste and alcohol content.
