GABA Plants

Koichiro · 2026-03-02 20:06
Been experimenting with taking skullcap, lemon balm, chamomile, and valerian on and off for years now. All of them definitely have notable GABA activity. Have not messed with them in a while but recently been revisiting chamomile, valerian, and lemon balm again. Just took around 750mg of both chamomile and valerian each. Just wondering if anyone else has explored this kinda stuff? Highly recommend it for anyone who is trying to get off stronger stuff, including alcohol.

never really felt anything from chamomile but it tastes good. started drinking it because i heard there were 'spiritual qualities' but later i heard it soothes the nervous system so i still drink it

Chamomile is anticholinergic and skullcap can cause hepatitis of the liver

>>20161 Damn...That is really good to know. I had heard that skullcap could be hard on the liver if used too extensively, but that such was relatively rare. Did not know chamomile was anticholinergic though... Are there any other things about the other herbs I listed that I should be wary of?

>>20165 Valerian might be a placebo. I do not recalled anything on lemon balm. I myself have been drinking butterfly pea tea which I find relaxing and it is pretty too but not much studies on the relaxation effects of it.

>>20172 Both are proven to have GABA activity, and both have been shown in rare cases to induce a mild withdrawal when overused extensively. Check the active compounds of each and check pubmed and other sites for references to extremely rare cases of people becoming dependent on both.

>>20177 I just meant I do not recall hearing negatives on lemon balm but I didnt look into it much and valerian when I last looked into it was pretty long ago I was seeing a study claim it is just a placebo but didnt look heavily into it.

>>20180 Ohh, sorry for the confusion, thought you meant you though both were a placebo. Is butterfly pea tea actually proven to be psychoactive? I tried it once years ago but never looked into it, was a free gift from some herb shop that used to be near me.

>>20181 I am not sure since it may be coincidental I felt more relaxed after drinking it but it also was not pure butterfly pea tea it also had damiana in it which is thought to increase circulation and be anxiolytic too.
