GABA against HPPD
Sabo Engle · 2026-02-04 15:25
I might've just had a retarded idea. But before that, a bit of backstory on my situation. Doing LSD has given me a minor case of HPPD. It's been more than 3 months since I last took LSD, I still see
>visual noise
>afterimages
>tracers
>large blobs swimming over my vision
>walls/ceilings/floors start breathing
The most pronounced effects are after waking up
>lines/visual noise over ceiling/wall
>hallucinations over my vision
The last one has taken the shape of blobs over my vision, hexagons and seeing a 3d rendering of the corner of some abstract room. These are always expanding from and located at the center of my vision, and so were the initial hallucination when I take LSD. Now it's gotten a lot better. Most mornings are kind of just normal now (although it just came back this week, hence the reason for making this thread). Daytime visual disturbances are rare to non-existent and only seem to happen when I'm tired/depressed. Talk about depression, I was depressed for the first month and that felt like soykaf. I didn't tell anybody so consider the confession of a lainon. I've briefly reached number 7 in picrel. I used to cry myself to sleep once in a while before doing LSD anyways. So I wouldn't pin the blame for that episode on LSD.
I point it out because, I did notice an interesting correlation between general anxiety levels and the extent of the visual disturbances, which I've seen being noted by other people suffering from HPPD. During that first month my mind would get stuck on certain ideas really bad, which were somewhat similar to the though loops I had while on LSD. It's not a diagnostic criteria, but PERCEPTION shouldn't be the only part in focus. There is more that goes on within the brain than just perception and the connection between anxiety and HPPD is indicating the existence of some deeper morphological change. (Wild theory, but LSD works by connecting previously unconnected areas of the brain causing a trip. It might be that in younger brains bellow 25 where new connections are more easily formed, trips actively form connections which for whatever reason start signal propagation again and again long after the LSD has left the brain)
Now the exposition is done. I was thinking the other day about the different kinds of receptors we have in our brains and the way different drugs target them. And then it struck me that alcohol (and generally GABAergic drugs) is a general neural system inhibitor. And while there are many theories as to how HPPD happens, one is the over-stimulation of certain areas of the brain. If you reduce that stimulation, things might get better. In fact the most popular medication for HPPD (Lamotrigine) is an anticonvulsant that reduces the release of glutamate thereby reducing overall signaling. I will be testing our this hypothesis soon.
I don't know what else to call this, but "a minor case of HPPD" / type 1 HPPD. I'm sure there must be lainons who (ab)used psychedelics a lot more than I have. And given how unexplored this topic is, I want to invite those with similar experiences (lesser or greater) to discuss their experience in a positive manner in this thread so we can all gain insight. Because honestly with how unexplored this topic is from a medical standpoint of view, there is a lot to learn.

The mushroom girl didn't upload correctly. I actually wanted her to the be OP image instead of the depressing stuff. I doubt the mods can fix it. I could swear I had this as the first attachment.

it'll go away eventually if you stop smoking weed

i ate a bunch of powder serotonergic RCs years an years ago
had moderate HPPD for a while
stopped doing serotonergic drugs
now my HPPD is basically gone
>re mood + hppd
seems reasonable.
>re alcohol + hppd
dunno if that'll work. if it does, it certainly wont be by direct modification of visual pathways (those dont use GABA iirc). also note gaba != glutamate, effects are very different. iirc alcohol does have some weak NMDA activity (explains distinct effect profile from more "pure" gabaergics)
>telling people you are suicidal ever
lmao enjoy the free bus ride to prison (psych ward) and loss of all rights
suicidality is like a bad trip, just ride it out and hope you make it out the other side
Turner · 2026-02-05 13:48
ive had hppd for about a decade now. tripped probably around a hundred times on acid, 4aco-dmt, and shrooms -- mostly acid. the hallucinations come and go sporadically, though theyve mostly gone now as i dont trip so much and i try and abstain from weed. personally i was never bothered by it, even when it legitimately occluded my vision, since i was aware what was and wasnt a hallucination. what always gets me are popcorn ceilings and footpaths innawoods:)
what you describe is very familiar... i wish i had more concrete advice. just know youre not alone lain. you seem to grasp that how you feel about your living experience affects how it all works upon you. i struggle real hard with depression... psychs are great fun (never had a bad trip actually), but personally i know i should stay sober as best as i can help it. >>20078 is right in that telling others of your suicidality is a dangerous game. its so tragic but its true. not us ofc... well, talking it out is good sometimes, but its easy to overindulge in ones self narratives

>now my HPPD is basically gone
Do effects still manifest from time to time? I'm asking more out of curiosity. At that point it's not like it affects your life.
>dunno if that'll work
Actually I didn't notice any difference. Maybe I was just trying to self-justify alcohol.
>lmao enjoy the free bus ride to prison (psych ward) and loss of all rights
That is the melancholic part. I had the mistaken impression that someone from my life would reach out to me. Ask me if I'm doing well. Make me feel like I matter to them above the transaction level. But, alas, nothing. Well. That is false. I did get called out for not attending university lectures. If there is a positive thing to come out of it all, it's that I learnt is that all friendships I built (that I was proud of) might've been just appearances at the end of the day.
>suicidality is like a bad trip
This analogy makes a lot of sense. Both consist of your mind getting stuck on bad ideas.
>>20079
>personally i was never bothered by it, even when it legitimately occluded my vision, since i was aware what was and wasnt a hallucination
Thinking about it, it wasn't the visual hallucinations that particularly disturbed me. It was the worry that I've permanently damaged my mind. LSD my first foray into psychedelics and illegal drugs for that matter. Not like legality makes a difference, I feel sober and perceptive on LSD but inebriated and without control on alcohol. Nonetheless, there is a factor of guilt from it, especially because any apparent aftereffects alcohol has go away after a day. And that was combined with the bad headspace I was in at the time.
>what you describe is very familiar... i wish i had more concrete advice. just know youre not alone lain.
I appreciate your comments lain. Online people either write off HPPD or self-indulge in narratives of irreparable brain damage. And well offline... I imagine if I told this to anyone, even if they accepted my use of "hard drugs", I'd be looked at as druggie. I might even get referred to a medical/psychiatric setting.

>Do effects still manifest from time to time?
Not sure. My night vision isn't what it used to be (kind of speckly/spotty/static-y), but idk if thats aging / mild HPPD / etc.
Occasionally I'll notice other visual artifacts if I'm sleep deprived / under other odd circumstances, but hard to say if they are HPPD or just normal visual weirdness. I started young and never paid attention to what my vision was like beforehand, so hard to know now.
Nothing like what it was fresh off weekly psych binging though. Don't do that soykaf.
>Maybe I was just trying to self-justify alcohol.
Nothing wrong with getting trashed every now and then. Just don't drink daily. Better to be soykaffaced once a week than buzzed every day.
>If there is a positive thing to come out of it all, it's that I learnt is that all friendships I built (that I was proud of) might've been just appearances at the end of the day.
Don't take this to heart. Making real friendships is hard. Esp. when younger, everyone is retarded.
source: My closest friend in uni killed himself, and I was the retard that didn't see it coming.
>re HPPD stigma etc
Nobody talks about the fact that psychedelic use almost inevitably results in some degree of HPPD. You rarely hear about it, and then only in the context of 10000ug mega-trips and such.
I'll just repeat what lain said, don't worry too much about it. It'll go away. Changes to thought patterns will also fade over time, unless you intentionally reinforce them. Alcohol is must milder as a drug, but if you wanna see aftereffects take 5-10 shots of liquor and wake up the next day. As someone who didn't follow my own advice, I think psychs should be a once a year thing, maybe twice max.
>re fried ur noggin
Takes more than that to break a brain. Just take it easy on the psychs for a while. Also no weed. Weed is like kicking dead whales down the beach anyways.
Ishikura "Tatsu" Tatsuhiko · 2026-02-07 01:34
Don't use GABAergic drugs as that likely won't solve it from what I am aware. Here is a few things that would reduce over excitation in the brain, mainly around glutamate toxicity. See this study to understand why that's the target I am focused on
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11871419/
Pick any one:
-Sacrosine up to 2 grams but reduce to 1 if you experience side effects
-N Acetyl Cystine 1 gram
-Magnesium glycinate 200 to 400mg
-Lithium orotate 5 to 50 mg which I'd advise not to stick to high dose long term just in case elemental lithium builds up
If this doesn't work try eluthero aka Siberian ginseng at 300 to 800mg or try Korean red ginseng at 200 to 400mg extract. Be sure one with third party testing for heavy metals.
For reference look into studies on anxiety, panic attacks, autism, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia and you might better understand where I am coming from and double check my suggested dosages.

>Magnesium glycinate 200 to 400mg
that's a low dose, i get 1 gram tablets, should i try breaking one in half to see if the same effect remains? i deffo feel mag gly at 1 gram most of the time, my veins widen, slight relief of tension from stimulants and i normally go poop when its absorbed

I was suggesting common doses used in studies. Taking large doses acts like a laxative.

>night vision
>Occasionally I'll notice other visual artifacts if I'm sleep deprived / under other odd circumstances, but hard to say if they are HPPD or just normal visual weirdness.
I've read one theory that says HPPD somehow exposes an inherently faulty human vision. Given how we tend to ignore asymmetries in faces, blind spots and blood vessels within in our eyes, I'm inclined to believe that human vision is indeed faulty. Who's to say it isn't natural to see static, but it is to ignore it. But once you see it, you can't unsee it.
>Nothing wrong with getting trashed every now and then
I feel a bit ashamed because one of the insights LSD gave ma was an intense sense of apathy towards alcohol. I hope to not regain an association of alcohol with happiness.
>see aftereffects take 5-10 shots of liquor
I've taken more of that and wasted a weekend cleaning up vomit stains.
>psychedelic use almost inevitably results in some degree of HPPD
I don't know how universal the experience is. I've seen numbers ranging from 4% to 20%. I would guess it depends on where you draw the line.
>Just take it easy on the psychs for a while. Also no weed. Weed is like kicking dead whales down the beach anyways.
Funnily enough I've done LSD, but not weed. I don't plan on starting either way. Laying in grass watching the sunset bounce of the clouds has genuinely been one of the most contented I've felt in a long time. But you're right. It's better to wait than risk making the fading HPPD a permanent thing. That fits with my personal definition with addiction. If I can avoid something even if I want to, I'm not addicted. I know LSD can't cause physical addiction, but anything can cause psychological addiction.
>>20092
I've picked up 500mg of magnesium oxide today. Magnesium glycinate wasn't available locally and I figured there wouldn't be a significant difference. I'll take one after dinner for a couple days and post results.

Yes, please do report back when you can. I am not sure the timeline of how long it would take for any effects though. I have not done psychedelics before so no personal use for this but I've been researching ways to treat this for a while now as it goes along with my other researching and even though I've mentioned this in past threads no one previously took notice so my theories have not been tested yet.

I was meant to reply earlier but forgot. I was unsure to post my experience because it's limited and I couldn't decide if it's just placebo or not. Anyway, the first morning after which I took the magnesium was amazing. I had an newfound sense of mental and visual clarity. That continued for some time, but the HPPD effects marginally came back after the second week with reduced intensity and frequency. I suspect the mood still has a lot to do with this condition which is likely the bottom line to this story. I am over all I'm happy with the results and will keep taking magnesium.
Also I'm not that good at reading my own emotions, but weirdly enough HPPD serves as a physical signal on my state of mind. So at least that's a benefit.
>I have not done psychedelics before so no personal use for this
What's your story lainon? Where does your interest come from? Do you actually never plan to experience psychedelics?
The Fin · 2026-03-05 13:55

That's good to hear. I'm surprised just the magnesium did much since it's among the most ordinary among all those.
>What's your story lainon? Where does your interest come from?
This is tricky to pin down because it comes from all directions. I was always into other cultures so entheogenic drug use is appealing. I have been into the paranormal since being a kid so the idea of seeing other versions of reality had appealed to me. I also have been close with some friends with schizophrenia so I had been researching hallucinogens to figure out a treatment and considered running self experiments.
>Do you actually never plan to experience psychedelics?
I plan to just not sure the time to and it doesn't help that I have a lot of anxiety and OCD like mentalities and don't even drive so I don't get around. Basically means I cant meet the right people and am too paranoid to just order something from an online dark market.
