how do i acclimatize myself to altered states and stop spazzing out on drugs? i want to free my mind but i get anxious and depersonalized every time

>>18936 If you haven't mastered your mind while sober, are you surprised you can't do it while high?
Yu-ichi · 2025-09-03 08:07
>>18937 why do people who are stupider and more egotistical/neurotic than i am do fine on drugs? also aren't drugs supposed to open your mind up?

>>18936 I lost the ability to do anything besides Alcohol and Tobacco. Probably bc of what >>18937 said. But I think staying sober for an extended time can fix that. Im self-therapeuting myself with tobacco and I think this is not helping with my Zen

>>18940 You answered your own question. You sound awake and thoughtful.

im going to assume you're talking about psychedelics as they're the most likely to cause the effects you mentioned. you don't need drugs to free your mind. your mind is already free, it is just sometimes hard to remember that. the most important revelations won't come from when you're on drugs, they'll come from when you're sober. you're taking drugs for fun in the same way you might watch a movie, or listen to an album. I'd say playing a game also, but you can't "win" at drug like it was a videogame. this next part is going to sound woo and i apologize. but meditate on the buddhist sutras. especially those relevant to dependent origination, i found that to be a very calming idea the first time i tripped. other than that you might be overthinking it. psychedelics will do some things to your thoughts and precognition but they won't send you to hell. weed, caffeine, alcohol, all play with your head too, in different ways. remember that you're not going to lose control of the situation, it can end whenever you want to (especially if you have a trip killer handy). you won't discover something special about the situation that makes you actually be in incredible danger while you're tripping. remember that you have something safe you can always focus on: your own breathing. and even if it feels like there's no "you" to experience it, all of these things will remain true. other than that, there's a reason why "set and setting" is said. make sure you're well fed, at a comfortable temperature with respect to the substance you're taking, wearing comfy clothes, and have an idea of what the next couple hours will be. if something is wrong, it's not the end of the world, it just wasn't the best time to partake in it. it's not like things can ever be perfect. >>18940 sometimes it has nothing to do with the psychoactive effect of the drugs and they just have a better constitution for it. personally my stomach gets upset acid and has a psychosomatic component of anxiety upsetting it too. but taking a stomach acid reducer and a painkiller makes the trip way better. i also found that a lower dose of benzos don't abort the trip and basically eliminate all of the upsetting effects (paranoia and anxiety) without ruining the cognitive or sensory experience.

I've noticed that my constitution with a drug, outside of the standard set and setting (and personally most important is, who I'm around makes a huge difference but alone is best with all but alcohol), is how healthy I physically am. Even eating like soykaf the day before could be the difference of going from riding the wave to spazzing out and being uncomfortable.

>>18936 Setting. You need a good safe space, and also a tripsetter. That's why doing drugs with friends in an open env like backyard, woods, etc can be fun. Second is dose, don't fuarrrking do a normal dose or high dose, do threshold dosing, find the minimum amount to feel it, and then a bit more to dive into the feeeeeeelings. Then third, goal - what do you wanna get out of it?

Despersonalization is a meme. You're you. Stop shifting blame for your mistakes, kid.

>>19744 Not OP, but it absolutely is not. I always find it hilarious that people like you claim to be so le enlightened from taking psychedelics, yet you can't even comprehend that there are people who experience things differently from you.
