lainchan / drug
Well, I have a question.
The Phantom Phreak · 2025-08-18 14:45
I'm thinking about trying hallucinogenic drugs (grass, LSD, and psilocybin) in a few years to free my mind and practice secret techniques, but everyone keeps telling me that drugs can affect my genes, and I still want to start a family. What should I do, and which drugs could potentially result in a retard or disabled child?
The Oracle · 2025-08-18 22:19
That sounds like broscience, desu
Dujour · 2025-08-18 22:37
Genes no that would only be anything that is carcinogenic. Epigenetics maybe but that can be good or bad. I havent heard of this for those before but it's plausible.

weed, LSD, and shrooms will NOT affect your DNA.
heavy substance use (e.g: weekly-daily) may negatively alter your epigenetics, which is heritable, so don't be a drunk or pothead.
>which drugs could potentially result in a retard or disabled child?
don't take drugs while pregnant or attempting to become pregnant. problem (90%) solved.
also, don't eat literal carcinogens/real bad soykaf (no lead, heavy metal, etc.).
also weed is trash so you can just skip that one.

>weed, LSD, and shrooms
got them all checked in my saucepan.

Just take some. Might even rid you of your juvenile breeding fantasies.

Given that this is your question, I expected that it is your genetic contribution which will make the child retarded, regardless of any drug use.
Pulse · 2025-08-22 16:53
You even thinking that could make sense and then needing lainons of all people to weigh in on it for you means you shouldnt try psychadelics and probably shouldnt have kids either. A few questions for science.
1. Can you walk us through why you thought this was a thing, where you heard it, and what line of thinking made you think it was plausible.
2. How old are you
3. For how much of your education was chat gpt a presence in your life and about how many years would you say its been doing the heavy lifting thinking wise.

i need to start asking people irl question 3

its unfortunately a valid question to avoid rage and being condescending (even though my reply still absolutely was and im sorry for that) when it comes to anyone under the age of like 23 asking something you cant believe a person who is all there would ask.
i really have no idea if i myself would have got sucked into it and ended up retarded if it was something that existed when I was in HS or college so not even judging when someone says yes.
Aristóteles Amadópulus · 2025-08-26 13:51
OP lainon here again.
I've been told by all people around me that drugs can soykaf up genetics.
Like, any drug.
Maybe I'm surrounded by retards, but I'm better to make my own research.
Just remembered about this place and thought we can talk about it.

lain, this just isn't true
unless you are eating literal carcinogens, this is false
honestly, i'm hoping this is bait...

I'm in agreement with the rest of the thread. Don't fall for the propaganda. Because of the War on Drugs, studies on most illegal drugs have been blocked or straight up falsified. Nevertheless, modern studies done on LSD and psilocybin confirm that they don't touch the genes. Their toxicity is still debated. Quoting D. Nutt et al on LSD and psilocybin
>it’s virtually impossible to die from an overdose of them; they cause no physical harm; and if anything they are anti-addictive, as they cause a sudden tolerance which means that if you immediately take another dose it will probably have very little effect
Other studies have shown that LSD is not carcinogenic, teratogenic or mutagenic. If you're worried about drugs causing retarded kids, alcohol is widely known to cause FASD. And tobacco and e-cigs are also known to lower IQ of babies or just straight up making them retarded.
Our perception of drugs has been massively distorted by decades of media propaganda. For example, for most people "drugs" is a word that encompasses a wide range of substances when in reality various classes have widely different profiles. Alcohol is closer to heroin than LSD, yet our popular perception runs contrary.

Don't worry lainon, we all are learning.

as one of the people sort of flaming you trust yourself over your friends in that case (regarding information im sure they are great people). This isnt just a drugs issue again depending on how old you are you should probably know a bit more about genetics or conception or child development. Not saying you need to be an expert just get some general background info so that when someone tells you something like this you can shoot it down.
I had no idea how you even arrived at this but I think now I get it and maybe you or your friends are confusing developmental disorders with genetic ones. Using drugs or alcohol while carrying a baby can lead to mostly mental disorders but also some physical deformities as well, like fetal alcohol syndrome. I think there also is some deformities associated with opiate use while carrying a baby. This has nothing to do with genetics though and is about the baby through the mother receiving said substances in the blood as it is developing into a fully formed human. This is why if you are a man you arent going to hear about making sure not to drink or use drugs while trying to conceive except maybe in terms of certain things lowering sperm count or ability to orgasm. The issue with drugs and babies isnt you using the drugs its the baby using the drugs because its sharing blood with the mom.
There is very few things that can alter your DNA or something like how you are describing, there is plenty of carcinogens but even those are altering the genetic code of a specific cell or group of cells, as far as I know there is no type of cancer that actually alters your entire genome. Cancers of the blood and your balls can (i think) sometimes affect the dna of sperm cells, other than that you are good and certainly there is no drug you can take that will do something like that it would be a really really big deal if they found something that could.
You might also be confused because repeated drug usage especially the younger you are can create changes to the receptors in your brain in terms of how many there are. Some will say these changes can be permanent but its hard to really say that for sure, if you are 60 and have been using drugs for 20 years its totally possible it still is temporary or could be reversed but its just not going to happen in your lifetime. This still however isnt genetic, the number of receptors you have isnt going to be passed down to your kid. What happens more often is that the behavioural changes your chemically altered brain creates result in patterns of behaviour that a developing child then responds to. IE someone using meth all the time might be very erratic and absent and so their childs brain might also change to help them survive in this environment with an erratic unpredictable parent and develop adhd or something that later predisposes them to abuse stimulants to feel normal. This is a bad example but its a somewhat well studied phenomena and why the genetic component of addiction has historically been a bit overstated, because it presents as if the behaviours or addictive tendencies were inherited. Again though, still a far cry from drugs altering your genetics just something I could see maybe contributing to this disinfo you heard.
