Why is the coca leaf prohibited in Yankeeland?

Apoc · 2024-07-06 02:33
I don't really understand why the use of coca leaves would be prohibited, it is really beneficial for the stomach, and to stay energetic and awake, nor does it alter the individual's perspective like alcohol or marijuana does. Its effect is very similar to coffee, but without that after-effect of tiredness. I usually consume tea from time to time for stomach pain, but in general it is consumed by agricultural workers so as not to feel fatigued.

>>15759 Coca Cola has exclusive import rights because of the meme sugar water. They remove the active cocaine ingredient for their sugar syrup so it only has the taste not the effect, and sell the remaining cocaine to pharmaceutical companies for surgical drugs. It's all because of the drug scheduling system in the US, which classifies drugs based off of ease of abuse. In the case of cocaine, it does have medical use, but it is often abused recreationaly which is why you can't just buy or import it. The system is broken, as it does not include alcohol which should generally fall into a higher level of abuse and become regulated if the system weren't flawed.

This thread reminded me that I wanted to look into how Cocaine is actually made. I didn't even know that the coca, a plant whose leaves are chewed and used to make teas in South America was the main ingredient. I fuarrrking hate the government so much. Acting like a plant is a criminal. You can't even grow these here for chewing or other non-cocaine uses. A plant that comes from this Earth, illegal. Imagine that.

>>15779 It gets worse. In some places you can't even legally pick mushrooms that grow wild.
Spooky · 2024-07-08 22:04
>>15780 wtf, where? here you aren't allowed to sell them, but it's perfectly legal to pick and consume them. how would they even enforce that anyway?
Lady 3Jane.. · 2024-07-15 03:38
>>15784 Often times druggies will trespass on farmland to find the mushrooms, and if the cops are called they get that additional charge of picking illegal mushrooms when they're caught
Void · 2024-07-20 11:38
>>15784 >where? In most parts of the US, possessing psilocybin(the molecule) in any form is illegal. Picking it is obviously a way to possess it so that's illegal to. >how would they even enforce that anyway? They can't really, but the law is on the books

I dont know either (well I do) but ive been saying that although its absolutely not true that "natural = good" decriminalizing or even allowing sale of the raw plant for some drugs could do a lot for people if you could somehow still effectively ban the chemical processesing of them for sale. You will never be able to get as addicted to coca leaves as you might cocaine because of ROA and the amount in each leaf, and at least in my city cocaine is readily available already. Likewise you (almost) eliminate issues of dealers cross contaminating with fentanyl or other substances, I dont have to carry test strips for leaves. Most plant drugs are like this in comparison to their processed form, where it isnt 'better for you' necessarily or not addictive but it would be easier to escape the claws of say poppy pod tea than it is to escape heroin addiction. And if you can buy the plant much easier it will likely be good enough. When I was doing cocaine often if I could have just bought coca leaves id almost positively have switched to that, I even remember trying to find a way to. I think part of the issue is cocaine is easier to hide than coca leaves, but if someone has a bunch of coca plants and leaves they probably are distributing cocaine and the DEA wants to be able to shut it down right then rather than having to search around for cocaine. Essentially it makes it easier if having the plant = production operation They also dont want home grown illegal drug farms, as it invites a whole bunch of issues. My thinking is though you could do some government overreach in a different way and make the selling of leaves (direct to store) far more profitable than processesing it to cocaine over here. Its not a domestic cocaine market being competed with, so this wouldnt just make cocaine prices shoot up and then it would go back to being profitable to process it. Some individual could certainly buy the leaves and process it themselves but they would be losing money in doing so which would relegate it to just being for personal use at that point. Theres probably a number of issues with this but my overall point is just it should probably be legal to buy things like coca leaves and poppy species that contain opium. They are still addictive, they can still be bad for you, but im 100% confident you wont see the level of degradation a cocaine addict might go through in someone with a bad habit of coca leaf chewing and tea. You will probably see health problems and increased casual use, but helping people not develop addictions is a seperate crisis that isnt about any specific substance. Just in this realm I think you would reduce a lot of suffering if somehow someway you could legalize the plant for purchase and small scale growing while restricting its processesing and whatever method could orient us to that would be a good idea

I just had my Erythroxylum Novagranatense seeds arrive from sri lanka. I got them from "sela seeds". best price I could find them on the interwebs. I think this variety will have a higher chance of success in my dry climate. will see how the germination goes.
