psychedelics and sanity

Chani · 2018-02-15 06:56
Anyone ever had problems holding onto their sanity after psychedelic use? I know this guy who used to be pretty alright, but last year he started taking acid multiple times a week for several months. He's never been quite the same. Can't even hold a conversation anymore.

Mitnick · 2018-02-16 01:40
As an intermittent acid user, I'd say that I definitely feel it could gradually prove corrosive to the sanity if overused. I make a point of not tripping more than once a month, or at least taking a few months off during the winter if I go hard during festival season. (For me, "going hard" means dosing for two days or maybe two weekends in a row.) As far as long-term effects go, I definitely notice wavering/dark swimming dots on the edges of my vision when I'm baked or when looking at a flat expanse such as the sky. So far as I'm aware, there are no other long-term effects other than those which came from shifts in my worldview (which have had profound effects such as mostly dissolving the mental barriers that were the source of most of my social anxiety). What's wrong with your friend? Why can't he hold a normal conversation any longer?
Mentat · 2018-02-16 01:52
>>1325 he's just got a really bad case of HPPD, I think. He loses track of what he's saying like he's tripping, even when completely sober.

>>1325 oh, also, once a month is a pretty average level of LSD instake. Most people don't take it more than once a week ever.

>>1326 That is like kicking dead whales down the beach, man. I value my brain, so I take pains to avoid doing anything with too high a risk of "dumbing me down." Give him a year to come back into himself, and try to encourage him to stay away from doing more acid. (And maybe he could cut down on the weed? Is he always really baked?) >>1327 Yeah, that's how I feel. I've not tripped in months despite having access to as much as I want. I have used a whole host of different drugs over the past 5 years or so, and that includes a bunch of different psys. Lately I have been feeling random (short) periods of derealization while sober. It's very uncomfortable. You just get hit with this jarring "Everything around me is alien" feeling out of nowhere.

>>1337 1) Nice post number. 2) I know the feeling. I had horrible aftereffects from my first psychedelic trip, which was on 180x salvia extract. For months afterward, I'd randomly, fully sober, have attacks of alienness and very strange sensations of what was "outside" of my mental space, or of how finite the mind-space is. Out of nowhere, with a wrong thought, I'd see my body acting as a deterministic machine independent of my sense of self. Or the bottom would fall out of my mind, leaving me clinging desperately to the sense-data at the top of my skull to avoid falling into the nothingness which awaited me. This persisted for months and years, and I still get occasional attacks just as I'm falling asleep. Do drugs, kids. But don't do salvia. Unless you're into existential terror.

>>1348 nb because unrelated to the thread I have 2 close friends who have tried salvia. For context, both have pretty extensive experience with high doses of psychedelics / dissociatives / deliriants / etc. The first had a breakthrough experience that he described as mindblowing and like nothing else he had tried. One minute he was picking up the pipe, and the next he was in a new universe, surrounded by giant clapping hands saying congratulations over and over. According to him, this experience felt "normal", and he had no idea he was under the influence of a substance until after he came back. The second got vaguely high and described it as not particularly pleasant, but he thinks that if he had successfully broken through it would've been more enjoyable. I suppose the first friend's experience is why some people are interested in salvia. The idea of having a DMT-esque breakthrough in a unique, non-psychedelic/deliriant/dissociative style is appealing.
Motoko Kusanagi · 2018-03-18 23:42
I did acid four times (once in one month and three times two months after) and for around a year afterwards I had problems with delusions. Sometimes I was convinced that my unconscious mind was making me mentally ill so that I wouldn't have to work hard due to deep-rooted selfishness. Doing acid was a lot of fun and it made me a better person (more humble and open-minded, valued reading a lot more), but I had to stop doing it because I felt it was making me crazy. I have friends who do it more often and harder than I, without the negative effects I had. Weed doesn't give me any problems. No history of mental illness in the family. I want to get into acid again and try other psychedelics (shrooms and mescaline in particular) but I'm worried I'll have the old problems once more. Any thoughts?

After my first bad trip I developed depression and it got to the point I ended up in a hospital half a year later. Thinking about it I don't really understand how I managed to live for the circa 6 months because they were quite honestly the worst times I ever had. I'm curious if anyone had a similar experience to a friend of mine. He could have been making things up, of course, but it went like this: Years ago he dropped acid for the first time. It wasn't a comfortable experience for him, but he mostly was handling it until he heard a voice saying "What are you doing here? You shouldn't be here. Don't ever come back here again." Needless to say he freaks out and swears off acid. Some years pass and he forgets about the experience and decides to try acid again. This time he's enjoying himself right up until he hears a voice go "What are you doing here? I told you not to come here. Don't ever come back here again." At this point he swears off acid completely and vows never to go near it again. Kinda hard to tell if he was making it up or not, so I thought I'd put it to the board and ask if anyone knows of a similar experience. Seeing as how I knew a girl who would go to nightclubs every night and bounce around on the dance floor while tripping I kinda suspect the story isn't true or something else was going on.

I knew a guy who was interested in her and started trying to hang out with her to make a connection. Eventually he gave it up because she was doing this every single night and he just didn't have the stamina for it (without doing a ton of drugs himself). The funny thing is, she wasn't local. She was from out-of-country and her parents sent her abroad to get away from the drug scene in her hometown. She told me once that the movie Trainspotting was a trip down memory lane for her. Recently, I have seriously cut back on my drug intake and I am only rarely experiencing derealization now. The very first time I ever experienced derealization was 1 week after my first trip. Other psychedelics and other drugs (coke in this case) seem to cause the same problem for me as well, which is concerning. I wish to continue using psys, but I'm pretty scared that I'm going to wind up permanently fuarrrked up if I keep pushing it. I have experienced positive long term changes from drugs though, which is worth mentioning. Acid and weed really helped me become a little more confident and less pessimistic overall.

Last time I did acid was this past new year eve. II was at a house party thrown by my weed guy. As a result it was an eclectic bunch Theater kids, classic game collectors, wannabe thugs I remember being overwhelmed a bit, slipping into the nearby bathroom Id had a rough year. Flashback to a Christmas party 2016. There was a game of texas holdem going. I was losing. So i declared I was folding every hand till I got back and went outside into the rain to smoke. So Im sitting there on a stone patio to my right is a pool covered by a tarp settled with a block of ice and leaves. And I pick up a pale round stone and draw a circle around me. I scream out into the night to whatever might be out there requesting favor and power, i wanted to win the game. I burn myself with the cig. and bleed on the stone Id drawn the circle with I told the entity I would owe them a favor if they granted me a win. And for the rest of the night. Id go all in. And toss the stone into the pot with my chips And I walked away the victor. Flash forward. My luck had been terrible. I d gotten arrested, lost my job, had to move back home after being out for 8 years. I knew this was in part because I owed a great power a favor, but I didn't know who i owed or how to reach them I needed a name. And Mid stream It hit me the name of the entity I owed. So I stopped pissing. And called out her name 1/2

But I heard her all the same. "I am a god. What is it you could possibly give to me?" I leaned against the sink, back to the mirror staring at the towels "Feel it in your feet, touch the hallow wood door, there is commotion and celebration just beyond it. Listen out the window, hear the transformer on the pole buzz, the earth spins under you at over 500 mph, somewhere right now a drone strike has orphaned a boy who will be the face of the next great terrorist organization your heart beets. it all moves and dances for me I am the creator and the destroyer, queen of discord. Chaos and order are not apart from one another. Do not believe in a false dichotomy. What you can do for me is forgive yourself. Realize every person beyond this room is in just as much pain and confusion as you are. This peace you feel, I want you to share it with others. Be my priest" And with that she was gone I turned around. Washed my face and ventured forth Ive spent the better part of this year talking to people about what she taught me. I think Im in love with her. So Am I insane? Maybe. 2/2

Taking a step back from "anyone would murder you for a dollar if they didn't think they'd get caught" to "people have their own motivations and circumstances, but most of them are generally OK enough to give them a chance" made life a lot better, even if it does get me taken advantage of once in a while. This thread has done nothing but peak my suspicions about using LSD. For the last year or two, I've done acid every other week during the summer with varying success and I've seen a few people change for the better or worse after doing so. The core group of individuals I do it with seem to have a decent resistance to change as we do it in a recreational fashion and once the trip is over, we return back to normal. However, this thread gives a lot of insight into the people that DID change because a few of them have quit cold turkey or become fuarrrked beyond expectations. Well, this makes me want to stop.

>>1958 >I've done acid every other week during the summer I'm not a doctor, but I don't think you need to be to guess that doing acid that often is not the best idea. Not saying you should stop forever, but it might be worth spacing your usage out by at least a month or so. The only cases I can recall reading online involving people doing any strong psychedelic that often end poorly (long term moderate to severe HPPD, psychosis, wacky personality changes, etc.) I can attest to one distant acquantance that had a few too many ultra-high dose trips in close proximity and swung from being a hardline agnostic/athiest to a proselytising born-again christian (among other changes).

I've done it three times now but I've never taken more than a tab at a time. Of course I'm assuming its 100ug but I have no way of verifying that. So far in my experience tripping on acid I haven't really felt altogether too different. I had an excellent afterglow after the first time but going forward I've noticed that I feel surprisingly normal (as in my trips, though profound at the time, haven't been translating into my everyday life in the same way that they seem to be doing for others.) Do I need to take more? Do I need a guide with me? How do I maximize the utility of the acid experience?

>>1966 I weigh like 260lb and one has a similar non-effect on me like that. I take at least 2 or 3 typically (depending on how much is on a tab). 200-400 milligrams is enough for someone of my weight to start seeing fractals. Umm taking 5 at a time is much more immersive, and from talking with friends after a certain point (in the 5-10 hit range) it has a max out point. So taking more than 5-6 is probably wasting your money as you would have the same effect on 6 as you would on 10.

>>2065 I'm used to the LSD headspace. I'm not used to the NBOMe headspace. If I go in expecting one and get the other, it probably won't go well. I'll take a known safe dose of NBOMe if it's put in front of me. If it's an unknown dose that's sold as acid? fuarrrk that.
Mario Rossi · 2018-07-09 09:16
>>2067 True. I was buying it as NBOMe and knew the doses. On the occasions were I've bought bitter "LSD" I've been far more cautious.

I've tripped many times, but always with marked distance between the trips. There was one exception to this; where I tripped twice in a week. For two weeks afterwards, weed, ecstacy, alcohol, ritalin, dreaming, or drowsiness would re-ignite light hallucinations and a semi-psychedelic state of mind. I felt like I was unconsciously experiencing a constant low-level trip that I would "dip into" via altered states of consciousness. I imagine this is the constant state of acid casualties. It's not unpleasant, and might even improve some people's mental health, but it's debilitating all the same. Don't play with acid. Much like the sea, or a 10/10, you play IN her, not WITH her.

>>1964 i think the importance of dose with regards to tripping frequency can't be understated. a few years ago i was tripping pretty hard every weekend for a while, really started fuarrrking with me and i had to take a long break. but for a little over a month now i've been taking threshold to low doses 2-3 times a week, low enough i don't get visuals but high enough i definitely feel it. haven't really noticed any changes in myself other than a huge decrease in my alcohol and cannabis consumption, and maybe a bit more willingness to try new things. person-to-person variation also is key though, if my bipolar friend was taking psys as i am now he'd be in the psych ward again. variation within a person based on their current state of mind and circumstances also seems pretty important.

yes but I also don't think it's loss of sanity. ive also had sanity issues with stimulants and ketamine and there is a distinct difference where the psychs are creating an "insanity" by making you question and no longer function off of basic fundamental things we all hold to be true. it appears insane from the outside but I think it's reasonable considering the experience and also is only a bad thing because you need to be able to function and work to live. this is very different and much less hell level from my experience compared to a psychosis or khole where you aren't questioning everything you straight up don't recognize anything and are hallucinating in a very frightening kind of way. you also know you are going insane at the start with regards to stimulant psychosis and thats the worst part. and it just slowly blurs.

>>1314 Not on psychs, but I felt like I completely shattered my mind after a pretty high dose of DXM combined with lots of smoke. That feeling that something just broke irreversibly in your psyche is extremely terrifying, nothing came close to that. >>1325 You are completely fine. Those dots are white bloodcells and have absolutely nothing to do with using acid or weed, you always see these dots under certain circumstances. Leukocytes can't absorb blue light like erythrocytes for example, that's why we see them/the gaps they cause in the blood column floating around in our vision.

>>2852 dissos are something else. took me months to get back to being myself after an extended 3-meo-pcp binge. psychedelics affect what your senses and thoughts present to your mind but dissos affect what your mind presents to your consciousness.

>>1472 set & setting are your friends psychedelics amplify the influence of your subconscious mind on your experience. The subconscious mind responds to beliefs, symbols, and stimuli that the conscious mind doesn't. So, prepare yourself mentally and trip in the forest or some place where you feel comfortable being an absolute fuarrrking weirdo.

>>1472 You might want to analyze why you think you're going crazy. I had a kind of similar thing happen to me, I kept thinking I was going crazy and it gave me some really bad anxiety attacks and depression. Once you calm down and look at the facts though: it's not a delusion if you can still think critically about the idea. It's once you start really believing things that make no sense that you're deluded. I've tripped about 10 times in the past year, and I've been microdosing off and on for 6 months, and I definitely have some strange ideas because of it but I don't think they're really delusions, just different ways of thinking about myself and the world. When you take these drugs you're going to change your mind on things and you're going to change your personality, if you're not okay with that don't do them. >>2867 probably also true

I spent most of my teenage years chasing psychedelics and it 'surfaced' (I say surfaced because it wasn't really detected or any familial diagnosis). I ironically never got to try MDMA which during DARE is all I wanted to try out but I tried a lot of experimental phethylamines and tryptamines. This last time I took it (early Jan) I dosed a small amount of Amanita Muscaria var. Siberia and a few days later 2.5mg of DOM. Sleep deprivation is what you have to be careful of. I've been psyche hospital (mental/behaviorial center) 3 times prior to this last one. One of the times was n,n-DMT + Sleep Dep. The others I have trouble recalling but one was done by a natural disaster. I would say do them while you're young. I have about one more semester at university and a job lined up but being away from family / friends during the holidays really success always check erowid and bluelight first.
