Smoking cigarettes
John Doe · 2022-12-15 10:59
Do you smoke cigarettes lainon? I've smoked weed for a longer time than cigarettes (mainly vaporizing) but last year I met some highly intelligent guy who got me into smoking.
His reasoning was that if you live in a big city you're already inhaling air of terrible quality so smoking wouldn't change much in that perspective (note that I've experienced a higher contrast of smokers in capital cities compared to rural areas). While I don't think this is a good argument it at least helped for me to find a reason to take a break every 20-40 minutes from programming to go outside and relax my mind for a bit. It might be terrible in terms of health but I'm not planning on making it a permanent habit. It also doesn't help that I use snus while actually doing programming (25mg/pouch) so smoking doesn't have much of an effect on me.

smoking makes me feel good,
every time i light a cigarette,
every time i light a marlboro red,
it makes me feel good,
and we got high hopes, and we like to smoke
we're smokers

You have no idea what you're doing. Cigs defy reasoning, they're addictive. You'll probably continue to smoke most if not all of your life if you continue this path.

are they smoking? or are they gay?

I smoked every day for two deployments in a row. Once I was back to the states I dropped it cold turkey. When I smell it i still want one, but I have not consumed any nicotine in over a year.

That's terrible reasoning by your friend lain. It can be used to justify pretty much anything: you spend money so you might as well spend it all, you're already not doing exercise so you might as well do none at all, you're already sleeping less so you might as well not sleep at all, people already die eventually so you migth as well kill them.
If you want to take a break, go outside for a walk and try to enjoy it without any cigarettes. You could also do some stretching at home, or lie down for a short while. All these things would be better for you by miles.
Smoking causes damage that you will not be able to revert. It will disable your capacity for exercise heavily, at least temporarily, but it will also destroy your capacity permanently in the long run, if you keep doing it and doing it. I've seen it again and again, people who beat themselves up because of their stupid decision to drag on some sticks.
Allowing yourself nicotine (quite a lot of it at that) is one thing, but allowing yourself to get it via smoking is another. Once both are okay you will eventually seek that quick delivery of cigarettes, at the very least occasionally, when in reality you don't want to smoke cigarettes. In the long run, quitting nicotine entirely is going to make it much easier to forsake cigarettes also, once you're well accustomed to using cigarettes.
Otto Normalverbraucher · 2022-12-16 01:55
You should go for a run to get a runner's high it will clear up your head and give you some exercise which you probably need if you're a programmer. If you do continue to smoke you should at least use a proper filter better than just what cigs usually use and use cigs with no additives and you absolutely should avoid menthols. Doesnt make sense to smoke when you say it doesnt effect you much.
Neuromancer · 2022-12-16 02:03
Please quit if you're still new to it. Tried to switch to vaping, now I smoke and vape. No one plans on making a permanent habit of smoking- it's just a bitch to quit unless you got lucky in terms of your makeup.
I agree that there's something to having to step outside, breath, and relax that forcing yourself to doesn't quite match (especially at night).
Chan Siu Ming · 2022-12-16 12:41
I've smoked on rare occasions for over 15 years but never formed a habit. I've never bought my own cigarettes, although I have bought cigars a few times, many years ago. I treat it as something to do on special occasions and only if someone else offers it to me. It has been over a year since my last cigarette, and this isn't the first year long gap between smokes. So I know firsthand it's possible to smoke and never get addicted, but it sounds like you already have a nicotine tolerance/addiction from your regular snus usage, so I wouldn't recommend smoking as you're at a much higher risk of addiction, especially since you're smoking regularly daily.

If you're just doing it to get a smoker's break, use a nicotineless vape or roll your own herbal cigarettes and nobody will ever know the difference.

Yeah, have been smoking regularly for quarter of my life, which is frustrating, to say the least. The only upside of "smoking experience" imo is the ease of social interactions in hostile environments. However, it still depends a lot on which part of the world you live in. If you happen to be born in a 3rd world soykafhole, then you can definitely benefit from having cigs in your pocket in certain place and time. I've literally had several situations when habit of smoking saved me from being stabbed or beaten to death by hoodlums/bums/policemen/junkies/aggressive immigrants and people who I didn't want to talk to in general. But if you live in a first world country than smoking isn't worth it. Even if you set aside the health risks, the existence of a smoker in these places is pretty miserable. The cigarettes are astonishingly pricey, smoking is prohibited in most public places and, furthermore , you're constantly surrounded with pro-lifers/analytical-thinkers/"get some sports,bruhh"/"le smoking bad health good" in the wired and irl. For me, personally, the biggest drawback of smoking is the fact that you directly financially support the most evil corps out there by buying a pack of cigs at your local store. The same goes for e-cigarettes, cuz their brands are mostly affiliated with tobacco Large-4 as well. I'd be glad to go back to constant pack-a-day nicotine intoxication, if only there was a way to obtain nicotine without the need to sponsor govs+corps buying it on the d a r k n e t, lol. By inserting a "torch of freedom" in your mouth, you willingly put yourself into slavery of tobacco industry, pharmaceutical industry and excise taxes. The choice is still up to you, Lainon.

I've been smoking cigarettes and using snus since i was like 14 or 15 but last year (I'm 18) i got myself a px80 (mod vape) since it's honestly cheaper and more convenient in the long run, I still smoke cigs from time to time when out drinking and stuff. And i still use snus (roughly 50-100mg pouches depending on my mood)
Neuromancer · 2023-02-01 14:17
Smoking pack cigarettes is normㅤie BS. Buy untaxed whole leaf tobacco and roll your own if you must consume tobacco.
Regarding vaping, I'm not convinced inhaling propylene glycol is any safer than tobacco itself.
My plan currently is to get some sort of analogue vape i.e. a vapor genie or something and use it to vape tobacco. Or maybe making tea with it. I'm still trying to figure it out, I'm too old to keep smoking.
fsociety · 2023-02-02 15:22
yeah ryo is the only way to go, i almost feel bad for idiots constantly paying $12 or more for a pack that lasts them a day when they could have like enough for 3-6 months for the same price with rollies. i should have never started so young, cause after age 21 it stopped being social and became profoundly anti-social. Isolating not to bother people with my habit. i smoked a lot of lucky strikes after my dad died, and quit for 3 years just to prove I can, now I'm in a stressful situation that requires killing a lot of time so...
Random · 2023-02-02 18:27
I smoked for 4 years and absolutely despise what I did to myself by doing that
Quit now, you think you know it's hurting you and you probably think you don't care but believe me when you're off them and realise how bad they actually are you'll want to kick younger you's ass for ever touching them.
You reek of burning plastic and decay by the way, smokers think smoke smells bad in a "smokey" sort of way, like a sputtering wood fire or something, actually its more like being near burning garbage and tires and stale piss, its uniquely revolting
Also you look like a mongoloid sucking the world's skinniest dick when you take a drag out of one, like the world's saddest prostitute, especially if you're standing outside in the rain while doing so

Non smoker (Ive litterally never smoked, not tobacco nor pot nor aught else) and I can tell you this is false. I love the smell of a good cig and I know several other nonsmokers who concur with me. Ive seriously considered starting smoking a few times just based on the smell, but I guess I have a general dislike of drugs and figure the inhaling smoke habitually is bad argument has some validity to it. But man I love that smell.
There is a sort of stale smell that I notice especially with wet ashtrays and cheap cigs that is bad. I'd have to do more investigation to figure out exactly what causes it, but its not the direct smell of smoking for sure.

Nonsmoker here, disagree. Cigarettes smoke smells disgusting even at a distance of several metres. I cross the road to avoid it.
Joe Bloggs · 2023-03-20 05:40
Yeah I occasionally smoke. I really don't get why all the "you'll get addicted bro" talk on a drug board, for any substance on any thread btw. Seems silly, or we got a lot of normal/moral users coming in since I last posted.
I've never gotten addicted to cigs or nicotine and I have pulled cigarettes since I was in high school. A small pack can sit on my desk for months without a single craving or anything. I can still run a mile with good time, practice sports, hike, etc.
Personally think a lot of people just have weak will - you enjoy your occasional cig OP.
Do try not to make it a routine though, routines are human habit and once it feels comfortable it's hard to stop and that goes for anything outside cigs.

This. I smoked habitually for 4-5 years and quit instantly one day, and only have one if my homie offers. I have this whole spiel I do for people 'trying' to quit, as it wasn't ever an issue for me
>Cigarettes being addictive is an advertisement meme invented by big tobacco to get you to believe cigarettes are addictive at all. The second you stop believing that lie, you'll realize your "addiction" psychosomatic and you can stop any time you want. Validating anything as addictive is the first step you take to lie to yourself, because you actually WANT to smoke. That's fine. When you want to quit, you'll quit.
This is of course not all true, but to the advertisement savvy, not at all incorrect, either. I'd rather give someone the inch they need then let them suffer in dissonance.
"Cigarettes are proven to be more addictive then heroine." What a convenient fuarrrking joke.
J.C. Denton · 2023-03-23 11:52
I love a good cigarette every once in while, it's nice to just go outside and take a few drags when you're at a bar or something.
That being said at the height of my smoking, I maybe smoked an entire pack in a month. Usually I only go through 1 to 2 packs a year. If I smoke more then 1 cigarette I day I just feel disgusted.

Junichi Fujiwara · 2023-03-27 07:38
Cigarettes will kill you. Do not smoke them. If you have a death wish, there are more exciting, productive, and fulfilling ways to express it. It's a consumer habit that plugs you into the system, not one that expresses your radical desire to escape it.
That said, somebody did open my eyes recently by explaining that service workers generally get an extra 15 min break in the US if they're smokers, and that non-smokers simply have to work an additional 15 minutes each day. So why the hell wouldn't you smoke? Makes perfect sense for a sh!thole country like mine, but I hadn't even thought about that. People don't smoke because they're stupid or even depressed, it's literally just built into the fabric of social experience like that. No wonder.
The Fin · 2023-03-27 17:37
Rationalize it however you want, but eventually the stupidity of it will be clear you. Maybe when you find yourself going out to smoke on a cold, windy, rainy day, even though you don't want to, you'll realize that it's made you its bitch. And you'll feel stupid.

In epidemiology, smoking is measured in pack-years, which is a pack of cigarettes a day for an entire year. They won't even screen you for lung cancer in the US if you haven't gone over 20 pack-years. Seriously, in the past, people smoked a fuarrrkton. Smoking a couple cigs every now and then isn't going to put you in the ground. Cigarette hormesis.
>>11803
25mg per pouch is a lot of nic. You personally should not smoke cigarettes cause you won't get anything out of it. Just buy a big cigar every now and then for the additional buzz.

Absolutely this. Smoking is mindless consumism. I say that as a smoker, literally (and i do mean literally) everyone i know that smokes hates it and actively know they are slaves to it. It's pretty normal (at least where i live) to hate on smoking while smoking with others.
I figure it's mostly corporations taking advantage of our desire for oral and manual stimulation. I still smoke but try to induce myself into other mindless, but less damaging, consumption. Drinking yerba mate is pretty cool, both manual and oral while having health benefits. Chewing gum is also pretty stimulating, can do it practically any situation and helps with oral hygiene.

in reply to the 'people hate it when you do it near them' posters, I hate public gum chewers orders of magnitude more than I dislike public smokers. I would preffer for you to blow a cloud of smoke in my face than stand next to me smacking gum for one minute.
Chewing gum is also generally pretty consumerist, lol.

Don't want to sound mean but i really don't care if people find it annoying. It's one of the few options i've found to work to stop smoking. Also i think it must be annoying if you chew like an idiot mouth breather. Hasn't been the case with me and when i chew gum usually people ask me for a piece, specially smokers at work or in social gatherings.
Can't say it isn't consumerist, i agree 100%. But it sure as hell is less damaging and more comfortable (don't have to go out in the middle of the night with -3° just to smoke a cig)

Tobbaco and cigarettes especially are trash, you are spot on here.
If you want to smoke then smoke fuarrrking weed or some some other herbs, atleast thin up your tobbaco.
I know of no smokers who like smoking either, its a disgusting worse than junkie tier habbit that is expensive, time consuming and utterly filthy and disgusting on every level.
I cant smoke pure weed(which one of you fuarrrkers can), but weed actually has a somewhat lasting effect and is sorta pleasent, unlike pure tobbaco which just fuarrrks you up.
Its fun and cool for a while and you can have interesting moments, but honestly its like inhaling vaporized vomit and feces.

maybe so but its obviously not that bad. Second hand smoke is surely far less bad than actual smoking and I know plenty of actual smokers who've done a lot for decades and are fine. maybe in the end when they die in their 70s it will be lung cancer, but like lol if you die in your 60s you die in your 50s, no big deal. I for one will be happy if I live to see 45.

yup inhaling tons of smoke is bad for you, just like weed lol. Welcome to the drug board, where people talk about drugs and doing drugs. I find if really funny that all you phaggits just post in the booze & tobacky threads, pretty sure the LSD loozers and the mushroom munchers and the weed eaters are breaking their brains and ruining their health too but booze and tobacky, a duo too hard for fuarrrking lainchan gimme a BRAKE.

Talking about addiction and health comes with talking about drugs. No soykaf the drugs that do more social and medical harm (cigs and alcohol are both WAY worse for you than psychedelics, which make up %80 of /drg/ discussion) have it brought up more often.
Unnamed · 2023-03-30 06:33
I'm too afraid to quit cigarettes for two reasons.
They make me feel productive and sharp. I tried quitting once for three months, well past any threshold of physical withdrawal once, and I felt like a really dumb potato during that whole interval of my life. I could not learn, not memorize, not process or think clearly about any subject. I saw no dreams. I was clearly depressed in the way depression overtakes your very life and makes it a forgettable fog. I've been smoking for about eight or nine years now and that experience made me feel like I regressed back to my teenage self: stupid, dim-eyed, placid, cloudy. This is the biggest reason I smoke.
The second is that while I'm no suspect to the plethora of health issues cigarettes come with I've found dealing with most of them a simple task of routine. The one thing you can't escape is cancer, but if you live in an urban nightmare then the pollution's taken care to completely destroy your throat and lungs already...

wtf is this attitude. not caring about your own health is not good or normal and it is definitely not characteristic of all drug users. and grouping all drugs together like this is makes no sense. nobody has taken lsd and developed chronic lung disease because of it whereas tobacco kills 8 MILLION people every year.

I managed to quit and now I don't wake up in the middle of the night with smoker's cough. Having most of my friends quit around the same time or a few years later helped a lot. I still chew nicotine gum which is fine, it's not as fun as smoking but it gives you a little buzz.
