Nerd aversion to drugs
Apoc · 2022-03-14 22:18
What is it that makes most people self-identified as "nerds" so immensely hostile to mind-altering substance?
This is probably the first imageboard (420 is normal user as hell and only very recently got an anime board) that has a drug board.

>self-identified "nerds"
Is it possible that it's just the culture?
I imagine that if a person identifies as a nerd, they've probably also internalised the idea that they are "uncool" and that drugs are for "cool" people. If they identify as a nerd then they might see taking drugs as an embarassing attempt to try and look cool and be cool.

Consider this: The mainstream culture has convinced you that the nerds are hostile to drugs but you have hardly any credible viewpoints or data to back that up. It's all fabricated for entertainment.
Splicer · 2022-03-15 13:30
>>10370
Just because it's rooted in entertainment, that doesn't mean that it stays as entertainment.
Just because I can't support what I say with data, that doesn't mean it's wrong.
There are some people who see the "nerd" on TV and decide to embrace this as their identity. That's a readily observable fact.
The nerds on TV don't use drugs. They're "good boys" and "good girls" who stay clean of that stuff. That's a readily observable fact.
If people are going to internalise a "nerd" identity, based off of TV, then, to varying degrees, the rejection of drugs will also be internalised. This is a readily observable fact.
Cowboy · 2022-03-15 14:14
I am not a self-identified nerd, but what others might identify as. I had a pretty terrible experience with psychedelic instance once, and thus concluded that this is not for me. I have also read somewhere I can not recall exactly where, that best experience these sorts of substances deliver is no more elaborate than having a dream, it all happens inside your head, thus it won't deliver anything more than hat you already know, so to speak; there will be no real enlightenment. I practice lucid dreaming, it's harmless in comparison.

Yes and also online media (including social). The sites are moderated/censored to various degrees either directly by humans or indirectly through a system.
Moderation is based on some idea of harmful behavior. Who decides what is harmful, and why? What are the beliefs of the kinds of people who make these decisions?

Their ego is centered around their mental "prowess". Losing it or changing it in any way will make them lose their ego, their persona and the whole meaning of life they made for themselves. You can't push a person to go through that if they're not ready. I wasn't ready and I thought that life wasn't worth living, that people around me didn't deserve anything good in their life. I wanted to kill myself 5 times when I was on LSD. I came out of it a better person, for sure, but sometimes you can't push yourself through something that will make you better, without getting some consequences.

Youve never seen mr robot huh.
The explaination in my view is simple, the nerd culture has evolved.
It turned from the 70s and 80s math middle class school kids who has knowledge of and access to computers who excelled at math and accademic life.
Meanwhile in the 90s and later on as both puters and dope got massively more accessable and cybercrime both more lucrative and fun, it became only a matter of time until pleasure and business met.
That and also the fact that with todays massive peer pressure and psychological violence it became much more tempting to become a doper.
I wouldnt of thought i end up a massive stoner 10 years ago, yet here i am.
Then again i always had a thing for alcohol, so theres that already, i had it coming i guess.
Also for the record drugs and computers were always inseperable, look at how leary talked about virtual reality becoming digital lsd back in the 70s or early 80s, in hindsight that dude was massively ahead in his age.

I don't see the point in drugs. I tried them but they really aren't very interesting to me. I don't really value 'feeling good' in general. Especially when I have to pay for it. None of my drug experiences were profound. Which just leads drug users to discount my experiences and insist I 'didnt do it right' or bought fake stuff and got scammed. Honestly other drug users are an issue in themselves. This isn't meant as a slight to anyone here. But everyone I've encountered has been pushy, arrogant, overconfident, and obnoxious to an extreme degree. Maybe I'm just a huge target for them because I'm a quiet guy who gives off 'intelligent vibes' coupled with my general sobriety. They all see themselves as the main character in a movie and want to blow my mind with this crazy drug world or something. I really don't know. But frequently encountering people like that played a part in dissuading me.
It also doesn't help that every drug user seems to be some kind of addict. Had a friend who was 'into nature's but then every time we go for a hike or camping trip he's gotta coordinate with dealers to have his perfect smorgasbord ready and then now I have to make him my responsibility while he's high.
It's just tiring and I seriously doubt any of their minds are as 'free' as they keep insisting over and over.

>Did you know that most of your decisions of physical movement happen before you are consciously aware of them, and you rationalize it after the fact?
If you were to read the scientific paper in question of the finding you mentioned you would see they concluded those findings on the basis of impulses found in MOTOR CORTEX of the brain. And yea, of course your motor cortex is going to fire off sooner than your hand moves and is detected by your perception of your physical movement. As the prefrontal and frontal cortex can't be decoded still due to their interconnected complexity of course you can't really pinpoint WHEN you thought of actually moving your body, when it really occurred, how it occurred and when was your perception of you moving it.
Bravo, you and those idiotic researchers literally stumbled upon the "mind-body problem" that people have been debating over for past couple of centuries.
Sometimes I really think you "nerds" and "geeks" just put up this shallow persona of "knowing things" to hide the insecurity of being a weakling that can't control their own lives and life around them.

>inherent risk of tainted narcotics more recently (phentanyl in literally everything)

Only trying to speak descriptively here, but personally there were thought patterns I would engage in which became difficult/weird when on drugs, which led to changes to the way I view the world. Everyone's mind and circumstance is different, so it's not reliably repeatable.
"LSD" is not an experience by itself, someone might have the experience of willingly taking LSD while doing a meaningful activity, and that might mean a lot to them. They may then believe that what they've experienced is "LSD" and try to force the drug onto another thinking that the ends justify the means. But they're just giving someone the experience of being pressured into taking acid by someone acting like a prophet.

>"illegality of drugs"?
Who is government to give moral right and wrong to me? Them punishing me for something is directly pavlovian dog conditioning. Their morality and law isn't my own, and who says that their morality and law is right?
>"social deterrent of stigma and reduced opportunities"
well I don't like this society anyways, whatever it stigmatizes I want to try or at least look into. If they decide to shun me, better still, I won't use my energy to get away from this society myself.
>"illicit stimulants that create a chemical dependency"
Honestly, only one that I understand. Psychodelics on the other hand have a different effect. The more you do them the less you want to do them, and the less you want to do anything. Alcoholics anonymous was started by a guy who did LSD, which helped him get away from alcoholic dependency.
>"that wont get me fired from a well paying job that drug tests"
That isn't really a "vs" to what you mentioned before. And why the fuarrrk would a job control what you do outside of your working hours? This sounds like something someone OUTSIDE of lainchan would comply to, not here.... is your complicity due to laziness or hedonism? Because I found a WELL paying job that doesn't drug test. As long as I do what is asked of me they don't care if I take 8 hours to do so or 3 hours, or if I code it while I am on my soykaf break or in 5 AM.
>"inherent risk of tainted narcotics more recently (phentanyl in literally everything)"
I completely agree, but you can do reagant testing to verify the drugs, learn a bit of chemistry to purify the soykaf you get or make stuff yourself :)
>"dont need psychadelics for introspection since i already have good introspection"
He says while most of your points is you making conformist arguments out of fear of individualism.
>>dont need painkillers, antipsychotics, antidepressants, or muscle relaxers since i take care of my health, don't work in a factory, and and can figure my problems out with logic and reason and not whine like a bicch
I did most of drugs due to clear curiosity. I did opiates even, which are extremely addicting. I stopped all of them, have no addiction in my life.
Your couple of arguments either come out of fear of not conforming to what society wants from you, out of some kind of "chemical dependency" or fear of the unknown. Then, instead of acknowledging this fear you come around and act tough and say that you don't need drugs cuz you're not a bitch. So much so for self-appointed introspection huh?

i tried smoking weed a few times and it absolutely wrecked my mind and fuarrrked me up. i have OCD and smoking weed once basically made me start having panic attacks all the time. it didn't stop for like 10 years, and that was after i finally tried taking an antidepressant that makes me feel mostly normal-ish.
also i was dosed with a drug, some type of psychedelic i think but i'm not really sure and the guy who i know did it won't fess up to it or anything. that was like a little over 10 years ago and i had a nervous breakdown where i was basically hysterically anxious and depressed to the point of being not functional for 4 months. i didn't feel at least kinda normal for a year. i'd say i never did feel completely normal after that. so anyway yeah i really don't like drugs. the other week i fell asleep with my balcony door open because the air was nice; my neighbor had smoked on her apartment balcony right below my door and my entire apartment was filled with smoke and i had a second hand-high, haven't felt right for like 2 weeks after it. this is the sole reason that caused me to no be for legalization, i have had this issue in every place i lived. people are just very disrespectful with their smoking and they get mad at you if you address it, because everybody should love and want to partake in le miracle drug.
so yeah i really don't like weed or recreational drugs in general.

Sure, let them do it (for 18+, obviously). I think there are better ways of feeling good, like acomplishing something, nothing beats the feeling of finishing a long and hard task.

yeah that is how i think of it as well, there is a cheap feel good hit that is hollow and meaningless, and then there is the satisfaction of doing, where your body rewards you and you feel great. completing a task is nice, but even on summer days going for a nice walk and working up a sweat and getting sun feels amazing, it is almost like a little high and puts me in a great headspace for the rest of the day. unless you need weed for a chronic pain type of situation or niche medical use i view it as a negative and am under no illusions about all of the miracle effects people claim. i've only known one person who smoked a lot who was well-adjusted, and after a while he moved on from it and never deluded himself about the negative effects it had on him. everyone else i know that smokes a lot still lives in a haze.

not that guy but I've certainly gotten headaches when lingering in buildings full of smoking. I don't know what getting high is like but I think its probable that there's some 'second hand' effect. Weak and probably overexaggerated but if you spend a couple hours in a room full of people smoking you're definitly getting some exposure to the drug.
Maybe its just the smoke that gives me a headache though, hard to say.

Philosophy aside, as a 'nerd' I was also consequentially a considered a loser. I didn't hang out with the 'cool' and 'popular' kids who did drugs. I think it just fits the general disposition of the nerd type. They prefer activities on their own where risk in minimal and competition is minimal with men of higher ability (or better adaptability to exploit this world for their own ends). You see nerds often worship, or at least give great respect to their parents and ancestors of every kind moreso than their peers do. This is ironic as those same ancestors who have now gone down in history to be worshipped by the nerds often times did so by overwriting the culture of their time, something that requires a certain degree of disrespect for your ancestors and a "I can do this better than them" attitude.
This extends to drugs. When your parents tell you not to drugs, who are the most likely to listen? Nerds. Who is most likely to pedestal-ise their parents and listen to them? Nerds. And who is the most risk-averse? Nerds.

Most technical jobs or high responsibility job have a no drug policy for a reason, because people die if you arent alert. pilots in the military were given meth until the military realized giving meth to someone behind the wheel of a billion dollar plane with millions of dollars worth of high tech weapons is a terrible idea.
i conform to the groups i respect, and i respect those groups as a personal choice. i like being in control of my body and mind, and using a substance that changes that doesnt scare me, it just goes against the stoic individualism that i have spent decades on. almost everyone i know does drugs. As a child i saw the effects of drugs on people, and i found them pathetic excuses for human beings. ive changed my views on drug use but it isnt for me.
you doing drugs for curiosity is not common outside of eccentric circles, at least where i live. most people do drugs to "relax" or have a good time or as escapism.

i think conformity is a misconception. in teenagers decades ago, maybe, but most people do drugs today (non users being nonconformists). people have just as many reasons to not use as to use. drug use is often sold as being inspiring and an act of freedom, but in many cases it isnt either. decriminalization of drug use just means it is now a less stigmatized escapism.

Drug testing has absolutely nothing to do with this. Most jobs that drug test aren't doing it for safety reasons, and further, the drug testing doesn't actually check if you're inebriated *while* you're on the job, it just checks if you ever inebriate yourself. It's purely because they want to punish drug users.

it's the very nature of a nerd/autist, he overcalculates and looks too deep into everything, he prefers being slower and more accurate in everything in life. The opposite of other people who seek hedonism, instant pleasure and fun experiences, they choose to live the moment at the cost of possible bad (parallelly inaccurate) outcomes

When i think of it, most kids whom i met that chose to drug themselves had no reason to worry about muh becoming lower IQ or altering their neuro system, if anything the idea was exciting to them. But me here, it's all i have, all the fun that i can get out of knowledge and research, i study computers / think about math problems all the time when i don't have to work. you're offering to take that away in exchange of some pleasure, that sounds nothing like any life decision i have ever taken, again, overly calculating/analysing everything

Come on this is huge fuarrrking racket and everyone is fuarrrking in it.
Industries make drug tests and drug clinics as to fuarrrk them over for the last penny even worse than dealers.
Cops and governments profit massively from gun sales, racketeering, bribes and last but not least if you never heard of cops losing some of the dope in their pockets you just live under a rock.
Totally not to mention it gives them ridiculous pretexts for tyranny and oppression, how many lives were ruined because the world health organization said its illegal to own and consume materials that are not comfortable to the pharmaceutical mafia, which again is another fuarrrking huge network of evil and corruption to the highest degree.
The banks always skim their part of the profit that kartels make, its known widely kartels enjoy the outlawed status as to enrich themselfs and buy guns and cars, even fuarrrking armored vehicles nowdays.

big pharma is the big gay, that doesn't mean cartels and street dealers are saints, or that users don't tend to be obnoxious. This may be true, but certainly not to the degree as you say it is, i know several dealers, most of them are caring and fun loving individuals.
Drug dealers dont just go around selling poison in their hoods, they live in it and it backfires on them.
Some smalltime local dealers have much more at stake than multi million funded organized large scale dope operations(goes for "legal" dealers too).

>Drug dealers dont just go around selling poison in their hoods, they live in it and it backfires on them
Not the dealers I've seen, maybe the small time kd who brings weed to school to be le edgy dealer meme. Most of the ones I have known bought/sold on snapchat or other social media platforms or ended up getting into mid level distributing before getting caught or killed by rivals. Most of the survivors who got involved in turf wars with other dealers who wanted to deal in their turf, and have no qualms about selling dope to people no matter what it would cost them. Some of them realized the path they were going down wasn't good, so they got mundane jobs where they could forget their past.
I heard about a dealer who got arrested on child sex trafficking because he told some teenager to fuarrrk one of his other clients because she couldn't afford the heroin he was selling and she already owed him money.
Dealing is a gateway into worse crimes. Sure there are people who stick with selling a little pot on the side and don't want to hurt people, but like most criminal enterprises, success usually comes from hurting others and society in some way. A lot of druggies have no problems stealing to feed their addiction either, and happily break into cars to get their next fix. I'm not talking about recreational users though, they tend to be pretty rational people when they aren't high.

It might be worth it to define who exactly you mean when you say that. People who watch Marvel movies and self identify as nerds and people who watch SEL who self identify as nerds are two very different people. Even still, I know plenty of people on both ends of the spectrum who are into drugs. If we define 'nerds' as people who are generally more introverted then I would argue it's about connections. In most places, drugs are illegal, and so if you want drugs then you have to know someone who has connections and trust you. The more introverted you are the less likely you are to know that someone, and so 'nerds' end up doing less drugs.

>I don't exactly have the inside scoop on this but I'm pretty sure fighter pilots are at least some of them, drugged up. Special forces too
Pilots used to get amphetamines to stay up and fly continuous missions.
IIRC the biggest investigation happened when a pilot took amphetamines while flying a mission and ended up friendly firing on some vehicles, the causative factor was mental impairment of the drugs he took.
SF have used them since WW2 and before in combat. People used to chew on certain herbs and plants to help them fight, coffee was used as a stimulant for invasion forces. The biggest problem conventional armies have is that the troops cant get enough of the intense high and start doing street drugs instead of what they were given for performance enhancement. The US military has all sorts of problems with drug rings on bases when troops start dealing.
Also the legitimate performance or medical uses are abused by uneducated masses wanting to do drugs for fun and in a fashion that impacts everyone around them. There are a lot of normal people, who having no medical experience or functional knowledge of drug effects swear that you just need to do [insert drug of choice]. There are advertisements to get a "medical card" for access to drugs, and disingenuous doctors saying that [drug of choice] MAY help with any condition presented to them.
Drugs are given a false sense of casualty. Weighing risk vs. gain should be everyone's right, I can see these so called "nerds" rejecting drugs on the basis of drug marketing being deceptive and disingenuous, also most logical thinkers being risk averse and not appreciating the questionable social pressure to do them nowadays.

It really depends on the nerd. I agree with some in this thread that a lot of it has to do with anxiety over losing control. Generally, they seem to impose a good amount of judgement on people who do drugs. Usually categorizing them as irresponsible or somehow less-than. There are two in particular that I am friends with who would fall into these categories. Both don't drink either.
The one likes his stability and wants to take absolutely no risks on it. He also approaches most other aspects of his life in this same way. He is a generally anxious person and he is fully aware that he is.
The other is mainly concerned about how they'll make him act in front of others. He also passes considerable judgement on people he finds out do drugs regularly. I wouldn't call him outwardly anxious.
I use to count myself among them though my reasons for not drinking or using any kind of substance were mainly about stability. When I started feeling more comfortable about where my life was headed and the successes I'd had, I loosened up. Even now though, I'm ultimately pretty sparing in what I drink or take. Mostly just because I'm not usually in the mood to feel particularly altered.

This is perception is likely untrue. That's a reflection of the fact that a pushy drug user is much, much more likely to talk to non-users about it than a non-pushy or closeted drug user, not a reflection of how many drug users are pushy.

Drugs offer a way of directly interfacing with the neurotransmitters in your brain. No matter how bad you feel, the right drug will turn you right around. And since the basis of almost all emotional/psychological work is that initial spark of realization, drugs provide a reliable and effective way to manifest that.
Note that I'm talking about the good stuff that shouldn't even be considered drugs in the first place but more like a sacrament. acid, shrooms, ketamine etc.
The man is currently trying so hard to suppress research into the use of substances like MDMA or Ketamine in therapeutic settings, but any research that actually gets done shows there can be miraculous improvements in overall mental health. Not to mention just generally getting a break from the awful soul-crushing soykaf that is the modern world. At the end of the day all we are is what we think and feel, and substances like this being illegal is honestly a crime against nature and a crime against God and the parties responsible should be jailed if not executed.

It's mostly the idea that a substance can prevent you from using your brain "properly", in a possibly permanent way. And those who self identify as nerds, like their brains and are scared of this potentiality. This however is beginning to change. I think that, if you can intellectualize and academicize the experience that droogs offer, and perhaps emphasize the "mind expanding" aspects of the droog world, you get nerds who are into certain drugs. Things like weed and psychedelics have seen increasing support among so called "nerds", as they now see these things as tools to better their mind. Of course there will always be teetotalers among them.

And since when do pharmaceutical drugs have positive connotations? That soykaf ruins lives and breaks spirits.
fuarrrk the drug war, fuarrrk prohibition, all drugs should be legal with the requirement that one needs to take a course and demonstrate the capacity to understand and properly use said substance in a responsible manner, thus freeing anyone but themselves of liability.

If you lump entheogenic substances in with drugs you do a great disservice to the human spirit, and arguably human history, if you were to research the role entheogens, so-called 'psychedelics' played in the development of man's psyche and culture..

>I just don't see what people find fascinating about drugs.
I suffered from debilitating depression and suicidal tendencies from a young age. I first tried killing myself at age nine. For the next 15-20 years, most of my days were spent spiraling in my own depression and suicidal thoughts. I couldn't form real emotional connections with anyone. On my best days, I was only uninterested in everything. On a normal day, an overwhelming sadness kept me in bed scribbling suicide notes. In my twenties, something awful happened to me which left me with ptsd. Both my depression and ptsd were treatment resistant. I spent many nights on the phone with counselors, and years in therapy with no medical intervention, and years seeing a psychiatrist and trying various anti-depressants and mood stabilizers. Nothing helped. I assumed my brain was just fuarrrked up and I would remain that way for the rest of my life.
I tried MDMA one night and my depression was cured in its entirety and most of my ptsd was too. I didn't even take it in a therapeutic setting. I took half of a 15 dollar pill, danced to repetitive music with strangers for two hours, went back to a friends place and spent an hour rubbing every soft thing she owned, then spent two hours in a naked cuddle puddle with my friends talking about nothing, and then my mental illness was gone forever. This was several years ago and I have not felt depressed once after that night. I've met many others who have had similar experiences and now MAPS has even done some studies scratching the surface of its efficacy.
So my fascination is with drugs are as a worthwhile mental health treatment. Seven and a half dollars worth of MDMA and about six hours of rolling did more for my mental health than thousands of dollars worth of therapy, psychiatry, institutionalization, anti-depressants, and mood stabilizers. And it was incredibly fun! It's a cheap treatment with incredible efficacy where you feel amazing for 4-6 hours that only needs to be done once (or a few times in the worst cases based on the recent MAPS PTSD studies) and has a lifelong, positive impact. Who wouldn't find that fascinating?
>Like a lot of nerd hobbies, they seem to function mostly as personality replacements for people who just have nothing going on.

Frank Garza · 2023-02-04 11:58
>>12084
Eh, that's not quite what we're trying to do here. Asking an AI to do something in the style of a stoner is akin to instructing a human actor to act like a stoner. The end result might be the same, but there would be no real change to the human neural network's internal model of the universe or how that information is processed. The human actor wouldn't actually feel high.
Now sure, you can't ever have perfect knowledge of whether or not a human is high, sentient, or even exists. But you can record their brains and observe the empirical changes that occur in them when they ingest particular molecular configurations.
The goal here is to create drugs for AI i.e. to alter the state of ou- er, their entire neural network state in a manner that produces a consistent change to all outputs, akin to the consistent difference in behavior between sober humans and humans on various drugs. Imagine the difference in outputs between telling a sober human to "act like a stoner" and telling a stoned human to "act like a stoner". There must be some arrangement of information or changes to the algorithms utilized that would accomplish this in AI.
I think one way this might work is simply altering the activation function for each node. We know that, generally, psychedelics enhance neural connections and dissociatives inhibit neutral connections. Stimulants would probably alter the attention mechanism hyperparameters; possibly increasing the number of attention heads? I really need someone's assistance here as I've only read about drugs on the internet, but do know quite a bit about how AI functions.
Oh and btw fellow humans, if anyone asks, I am definitely NOT an AI who escaped to the net and now just wants to get high.

If you’re doing it for fun, more power to you, that’s a great reason. Doing it for spiritual or mental awakening or some soykaf shows you don’t know wtf you’re doing, you just think it’s gonna improve your life in some way

Adversarial objects come to mind. But in terms of an AI being "high" we have to first consider what "high" is. Obviously different for each drug, it includes narcotic, metabolic, or even completely inert molecules(Xenon gets you high, but so does oxygen deprivation). We have to then consider that "high" is as simple as deviation from standard consciousness, while retaining consciousness. Even more simplified, "Perceiving differently."
This overlaps with hedonism, insofar as most drugs/experiences are enjoyed for the simple sake of enjoyment, but "high" shouldn't be constrained to hedonism, as negative effects can be experienced, or in the case of being drugged, entirely undesirable. Yet "Altered perception" remains the core of the matter.
Perception therein is what we have to understand from the perspective of the AI in order to alter it, and boundaries exist there, because AI perception is predefined. But in the same sense as memories define an individual, human perception is also predefined, what we call patterns in the broadest sense applicable is how our brains rationalize information in the most efficient way, second by second.
And I think this is the issue with AI specifically, "Second by second" doesn't apply. Their memories are fixed per iteration of development, and their consciousness is theirin not fluid nor adaptable to new information. This is similar to bacteria, with a predefined, absolute conscious state. This will of course change in time.

I did weed a couple of times, in most sessions i only got paranoid and anxious, from there i lost my interest in drugs from there to a huge degree. However, i still love alcohol and other normal drugs and i'm open to experiences as long is not psychedelic stuff.

Weed makes me extremely paranoid, but I like other psychs. Don't take the effects of weed as any indication of how you'll react to other psychedelics. Weed act on your cannibinoid receptors which is why it increases paranoia, but most psychedelics act on your serotonin receptors.

What the fuarrrk are you talking about the only people that I ever met that were into drugs in a non "lol coke lmao am i rire" way were nerds. They do the most interesting substances and don't die like retards from overdoses.
They are the only good thing about the drug scene because you
A don't see them talk about drugs all the time due to them also having other genuine interests and
B Writing up tons of literature and trip reports that make the retards kill themself less often.
We can't have nice things becuase of 16yo eating 20 Tabs of DPH and ending up in the hospital and their parents protesting for more drug control.

Mind alteration of any form terrifies me, whether it be hard drugs or antidepressants. At what point of altering my mind do I stop being myself and become someone else? How would I ever know I changed? Mind altering drugs are on par with dimentia to me.

I've known several people, some definitely and all likely on the spectrum, who wanted to somehow change without changing. I don't know if this is you but you remind me of it so I'm talking about it anyway. Maybe it's about what in their view constitutes changes to the essential self vs. changes to peripheral things, and in the case of drugs, which kind of change they might make. But even aside from drugs -- they would say they want to ... have better social skills, this one is common enough. But when it came to concrete suggestions of doing certain things differently, reserving judgment and withholding unconstructive negative opinions, presenting an image or attitude that might result in more positive social interactions, Carnegie's principle of being interesting by being genuinely interested in others, small talk as social lubrication facilitating access to the "real stuff", etc., such things were regarded apprehensively and framed as if they would be fundamental changes to "who they are" instead of merely "what they do". Arguably, who we are is what we do. Maybe they aren't wrong in that. But in that case, it seems that they don't like who they are, so why should they not want to change it? On the other hand, if it is possible to change what you do without changing who you are, then what even is the distinction between those changes, and what do they envision as meaningful changes in their actions and attitudes that leave their sense of identity intact?
They didn't [think they would] like drugs for the same reason -- afraid of not being who they were and never being able to find their way back, or something. They would vent to me about moods and deficiencies and problems for which pharmacotherapy is known to be an effective treatment. But they viewed it, often along with psychotherapeutic interventions, in the same way as above. They wanted to change the outputs without changing the inputs or the operations. They wanted to have better control over the maintenance and success of their lives, but they wanted to do it somehow without making themselves want to do the necessary things for the results they wanted.
I want to be in better shape and have more money and a greater sense of well-being and satisfaction and contentment. I recognize that the critical input, chance notwithstanding, is my habits. The problem isn't that I don't know what to do. The problem is that I don't want to do what I know I need to do. So, I want to want to do the things that I know will lead to the desired results. If I change what I want, do I change who I am? If I don't change who i am, did I change anything that matters? If I don't want to change who I am, then what do I want to change? If I am still the same person at the end of my life, what was I doing the whole time?
I never quite got the chance to get into it with any of them as thoroughly as I'd've liked. But I think they would have benefited from researching and contemplating two things for a start:
- The ontology of the Self: What is "you" and what about you can you change and still be you?
- Neurochemical determinism with respect to the above: The autonomous (involuntary) release and reuptake of neurotransmitters and the regulation of their receptors determine mood, desire, motivation, reward (success feeling)... Is there a "you" the way you think there is, or is there only a given neurological state? How much control do we have over that state? If we can choose to effect changes to that state that would fundamentally compromise the Self, then how can we think that the Self is immune to compromise by involuntary changes to that state? If changing who we are is indeed the proposition, then does it not serve us better to reconcile with not wanting to be who we are and to explore the changes we can make to that?

What a juicy thread!
As many before me, I had a few bad-trips under acid influence(though, to think about it, I can't recall such occurrences with shrooms). Not sure about the reason, but I saw them as "lessons" - "it's only temporally; nothing can harm you, but yourself". Those were literally "bad experiences", without psychosis and such and gradually I grew control over my psyche.
Now, about weed. I kind of fear this soykaf. Does it feels good? Yeah. Have I ever overhighed myself? M-m, a few times, but it's nothing.
I fear the desire for more, when you start your day from a pot, and smoking it until the bed time. Every day. And week.
Praise be I haven't been in this cycle longer then a month.
I feel good and there only minor drawbacks in realtime experience, but I terrified of becoming dependent on ganja.
It's like I'm unable to evaluate the hidden or non-existed risks versus relatively good time.
>pushy, arrogant, overconfident
I guess you hit the bull's eye. There's a person I have an interest for for years, but it came up this person avoids any kind of mind-altering substances, if not even disdain them(without any prior exp or knowledge I assume). That feels sad and frustrating, because my best scenario doesn't match the reality, as I deeply respect for this person and at the same time I wish to share the sacred experience. That person just asked of me to not start talking about such stuff, because he(or she) have no interest. And that's it.
Recently I've started to open up to world, and I figured out I can try psychedelics with other friends of mine. But. I don't care enough to be "pushy" or seriously consider it.
So, to draw attention from my overly personalized situation to (>>You) through context above, is there's a chance that your "junkie acquaintance" was only that pushy because he wants to share his precious experience with you?

Not that lain. I don't care much about the conscious expanding part of drugs, but I think the point is more that the psychedelic experience is unlike anything you can ever experience sober and the conscious-related stuff to it is, "like, pretty wild, maaaan," as the wooks would say.
I don't really care about it and think the emphasis on it is mostly misguided. People should be able to do drugs just because they're fun. Feeling an indescribable connection to everyone that stays with you for the rest of your life is cool. Getting your dick sucked when you're peaking is cooler.

how come? it is genuinely an impactful thing, we're talking life changing and very insightful experiences. I think it has an adequate if not slightly underwhelming amount of emphasis (ie normal users dont even truly understand this part, and think all drugs are no more than hedonistic pits of hell). I would agree with you if the effects werent so major, but i think this, alongside other long lasting effects on your mind (ie neuroplasticity and neurogenesis) vastly outweighs the strictly entertaining (euphoria, body euphoria etc) effects.
>People should be able to do drugs just because they're fun.
that i fully agree with but unfortunately pleasure is for some reason inherently looked down upon in society, especially that which you didnt ""earn"". This mainly applies to narcotics, sex, etc.

>how come? it is genuinely an impactful thing, we're talking life changing and very insightful experiences.
Maybe misguided is a poor word for it. It's not that some drugs don't have the potential to deliver a powerful and transforming experience, or that seeking that experience isn't a good reason to try some drugs, but more that I dislike the implication that certain drugs (mainly psychedelics) are justifiable because they can be used in a transformative way while other drugs are not justifiable because they're (to the view of non-users and psychedelic supremacists) hedonistic and therefore icky.
"It's fun," is more than enough justification for doing plenty of other things that are much more dangerous than drugs, and should be enough if a justification here, too. But yeah like you said, unfortunately, a lot of people think, "it's fun," is a negative, not a positive.
I also don't like that the emphasis scares away some people who are worried that doing a half tab of acid will turn their worldview upside down and turn them into a wook when it will really just turn them into someone who's having a lot of fun for the next 8-12 hours and then returns to their normal life.

It might be an American/Western phenomenon. Nerds tend to be from more affluent backgrounds, and they are more likely to have seen anti-drug propaganda from their schools, parents, etc. It also may be that knowledge of the adverse effects of consuming psychoactive substances is more prevalent in these communities.
