for those who are moderate to frequent users, discuss your experiences developing tolerances, and as an additional topic, withdrawals.
I personally have never used anything to the point of developing a resistance, but I'm curious to see what others have to say on the psychological effects of it.

I have tried many drugs, and have gained tolerance to certain drugs at one point or another. I never realized this until you made this thread, but tolerance development is very different with each drug. Not only in terms of the time it takes to develop a tolerance, but how the tolerance presents itself as well as other factors such as dosage/time between dosage. You need to factor in cross-tolerance as well.
Don't really know where to start with this so i will be general and then maybe come back and post more (kind of tired now, and drunk). Going to base this more on experience/reading over the years rather than giving a scientific explanation as to how tolerance is built. Like i said, it is pretty damn unique to each drug. With some you can notice it gradually building, with others you don't notice it until it hits you like a train and you need to take twice as much.
The way tolerance "feels" can be different depending on the drug. It is almost never a matter of simply having to take more to achieve the same effect. As your brain adjusts to the steady stream of any drug, the drug feels a bit different for the user whether they notice it or not. It is more noticeable with some things than others. Anyone can agree that a drug they have used over a period of time will never have the same feeling as it did during the first 1-10 uses. Even if you are positive there was no physical tolerance built, mental tolerance will always play a part in some way. My pot tolerance is zero but my brain still knows what to expect. The first 5-10 times i used that stuff was monumentally different than any use thereafter. That is something you either can't get back or would have to abstain for a LONG time to experience that again. DXM is an interesting example of this, i used to use it regularly a while ago. Everyone talks about "losing the magic" after a certain number of trips. I can vouch for this, the feeling of the drug itself changed entirely during my experiences with it. It got to the point where the drug literally felt like a different drug entirely. Some effects stopped happening and new effects started happening. It was gradual mind you, but definitely noticeable. The dosage needed to get my rocks off also increased with time.
As far as physical tolerance goes, it can be finicky. Again, unique to all substances so i can only give examples.
For example, if you dose say 12g of kratom within like 6 hours your first time, your tolerance will spike instantly and may take days to go down. If you were to take 6g 12 hours apart from each other you wouldn't notice nearly as much of a tolerance buildup. It has to do with the brain being flooded all at once by the stuff to put it simply. The dosage and time between dosage are huge factors in regards to tolerance for many drugs. Sometimes taking huge doses will ruin your tolerance, sometimes taking it in microdoses all day will ruin your tolerance. Traditional psychadelics (LSD, LSA, Psilocybin etc.) must have a good amount of time between doses or they will be barely felt, most say at least 7 days. After that you are fine and will trip hard again, i'm pretty sure it takes a while to develop a strong tolerance to pychadelics if you put time in between doses like that. Mental tolerance will come into play though.
Once you build a solid tolerance to anything, returning to baseline is as unique as building the tolerance was in the first place. Sometimes you never return completely, whether it be due to mental tolerance or not (by mental i mean how you perceive the drug and not what is actually changing neurotransmitter wise). Even a heavy Kratom user can quit and be back to near baseline in 2 weeks, even if it took much longer than that to build the tolerance. Other drugs like DXM may take years. I could go on but it is time to pass out. I may make a second post about withdrawals and how they relate to tolerance. They are pretty related to eachother actually.

When I take acid now if its just one tab I sometimes dont even feel it, can fall asleep on it, and it doesnt kick in till like 4 hours later. I can usually feel it going to my head and it almost feels like it cant quite breach some wall or takes forever to do so. Gonna try 3 tomorrow maybe.
My friend got addicted to coke. Withdrawals were so bad mainly because he has anxiety and was about to have a panic attack he used other drugs to deal with them. Now hes just addicted to even more stuff.

Funny that you mention losing the magic, I was just about to post this. It is a mental tolerance thing, I think it is particularly noticeable with psychedelics because the experience you get from them is totally unlike anything else - I feel like a lot of drugs simply induce you into a state of mind that you can achieve in normal life. There is nothing like tripping at all. Dreaming doesn't even come close.
