Alcohol

Good old hooch. A drug for new and old. Who here likes it? Any heavy drinkers lurking around?
Still amazes me how side effect heavy, dangerous and habit forming the substance is despite its public image. I have played with everything under the son but alcohol really is some sneaky stuff. Many people have no problem with it. Sometimes people don't have a problem with it simply because they don't view it as a drug. They view it as a social everyday thing that they shouldn't do other than weekends. Pretty interesting.

I agree. Alcohol is scary, and the way people disregard it makes it even more scary. It is precisely as you've said, sneaky.
I've stopped doing drugs and being interested in drugs some years ago (never been addicted, though), quit tobacco, and I've been at the coffee, chewing gum and a couple of wine glasses now and then level for the last couple of months.
It is still, however, like a natural instinct for me to stay home and get drunk as means of dealing with strong emotions. I've somehow been fine for all lent, even though there was a situation when the soykaf hit the fan pretty intensively. Didn't even think of drinking. But hey, it's not even a week since Easter and I feel oh so very sad that I have a bottle of vodka chilling in the freezer.
I've spent every Saturday of 2015 hungover. It's just that I was feeling oh so very very sad every time I finally had a time to deal with, or even think about, something not related to what I've been busy Monday to Friday.
For me, alcohol is a very sneaky bastard and I fall for the same old tricks every time. It's just like the elections.
The way it is in our culture, it has grown together with it. It is inseparable with some parts of our lives, customs, social gatherings, celebrating, mourning. We are so familiar with it that we don't even think of it.
Speaking of social gatherings, I've been to a party with a peer group that I interact with on a daily basis whether I like it or not, like, a month ago. I was the only person not drinking. It was excruciating. Absolutely dreadful.

I was a heavy drinker in my early-mid teens (very common amongst the UK underclass) but quit cold turkey once I left school. You can only drink so many cheap spirits (looking at you, Tesco Value Gin) straight until you put yourself off for good.
I've recently started to drink again after getting a new job and tagging along for pub lunches with my colleagues. I'm enjoying it way more than I expected - gentle, low-level intoxication is a pleasant feeling. Let's hope it doesn't become a habit!
Turner · 2017-04-22 23:15
been drinking almost every day for like the last 6 years.
I stopped a few times to prove to myself that I could, but then found myself rationalizing away not drinking.
You're right, it's sneaky, but at least you can pass a drug test on it because it's 'normal'.

My dad is an alcoholic, he is drunk most of the time, having to see him like that makes me sick, listening to the non-sense that comes out of his mouth, watching how he strugles to walk to get into bed when he comes home.
The way he dresses, his health is awful.
I'm sorry to say this but i wish he was dead because having to see this is painful.
I hate you dad, i hate you so much.
Vasya Pupkin · 2017-04-23 08:45
I'm buying a 24 cans box of beer once a month. Don't drink anything stronger than beer, though. The first and only time when I've got actually drunk scared me soykafless.
Yes, it is sneaky, but it's engraved in culture deep enough there's nothing you can do.
Postcyberpunk · 2017-04-23 11:16
Despite being a university student, I only drink sometimes, maybe once a month or so. Normally bourbon and rum. Sometimes jaegar. I can't stomach beer and wine.
Cowboy · 2017-04-23 11:24
OP here, i go through about 8 pints of beer a day on average. Your normal 5%. It is fun but it isn't fun. There are so many drugs out there with less side effects. It just works in such a way that it is addictive as hell. I could quit smoking 100x easier than alcohol. Convinced kicking opiates isn't even as bad, not that i have ever seriously experienced that. But addiction wise for me personally it is pretty rough. Nothing like anything i have been hooked on before. So watch out guys.
Half of the addiction comes from pushing off hangover/withdrawal. A smart man once said the line between withdrawals and hangovers isn't exactly clear to a point. Kind of hard to explain but this is a true statement. A morning beer fixes the hangover as well as pushes off the rebound anxiety that comes with quitting. Even can settle your stomach (not a good sign).

I hate alcohol, and don't like alcoholics or heavy drinkers. In my opinion it's one of the worst drugs, right next to smoking tobacco.
Drunk people are annoying, aggressive at times, and just fuarrrking retarded. It's dangerous for yourself, and for those around you.
Yet MJ is illegal, a plant that has actual medicinal properties. Really makes you think.

Bottle every day or two. Usually Vodka because it is cheap. Life isn't worth living sober.

soykaf, I'm still fuarrrked after the ~4 liters of beer last night
Erik Johansson · 2017-05-04 02:01
I used to drink heavily as well. Gained a lot of weight and hated myself for it. Eventually I stopped and got it under control and lost all the weight, but it still irritates me to this day after those conflicts with my parents.

I could say the same thing about people who cant handle weed. It sounds like youve just been around terrible drunk people, probably the only thing thats always true about what you said is it makes you a bit retarded but not full retard unless thats how drunk you want to get.
I understand your aversion but I was averse to weed till maybe last year cause every smoker I knew was a complete idiot and annoying when high. Then I met some really chill people who smoked. Obviously though alcohol is more damaging than weed.
Wintermute · 2017-05-07 11:12
I only drink on the weekends or days off, but I really like it. If I didn't have something to do all day where I had to be sober, It could really become a problem.
Turner · 2017-05-08 14:14
When I drink, I drink to get drunk. When I drink, I never feel drunk enough. Being drunk enough comes right before being sick. Being sick is like kicking dead whales down the beach, but being sober also is like kicking dead whales down the beach. Anybody else know this feel. Am I an alchoholic?
I've been drinking.

Rum is my soykaf.

It's how alcohol works
Yuki Nagato · 2017-05-12 23:54
Yep. It's terrible. Only 26 and I've already developed a daily habit, about a bottle of wine a night. The irony is I'm a psychiatry resident - I spend most of my day lecturing patients about drug addiction, and here I am.
Currently working on seeing a psychiatrist of my own to start Antabuse.

Nothing, yet. But try to cut down while you can. The earlier, the better.
Part of the problem is that nowadays drinking around that age has become ultra-normalized, particularly at college, even to the level of problem drinking. Blackouts, throwing up, etc. But, hey, everyone does it, so it must be alright. Then when you come out of that time period, you may think you're doing great because you're drinking less---but less is not the same as better.
See, it started in college with me. I had issues with depression around freshman, and especially late junior, early senior years, and the alcohol was an escape; it helps you cope, and forget. But as that's passed, and I'm happy with my job and my relationships, I've noticed that the alcohol has started to drive depression, rather than the other way around.
Try to cut down, or try to stop it altogether. It quickly becomes a crutch if you let it, and the longer you use, the harder it is to quit. Most of all, don't be afraid to get help.

Drinking some Lager with nothing to do
Ender · 2017-06-13 23:32
I too am one of those people who drink only to get drunk. I just see no reason to drink the occasional can of beer (even if I liked the taste), because the effects I am feeling are so mild until a certain point. And alcohol is so bloody expensive here, too. So I only drink at "social" outings (a couple times a year), because it just feels so stupid and futile to get drunk alone while sitting in front of the PC.
I also find the taste of alcohol disgusting until I am drunk enough (aka having lost all self-control, which is actually quite nice IMO). I think this is acquired though, because I used to be able to drink vodka straight from the bottle and whatnot a few years (late teens) back. Nowadays just the smell of raw spirits makes me want to puke. Incidentally, my drinking almost always includes vomiting. I actually do get the rare cravings for booze but usually a whiff and 2cl makes me stuff the bottle back into the freezer in disgust to wait for new years or something.
Yeah, I probably would never drink if it was not the social norm here. Luckily I don't have that much of a social life.
Crazy Jake · 2017-07-19 21:54
I've been drinking a fair amount this summer. Sake is nicest to drink imo. Good rate to get drunk at, but still have time to hydrate
Leto Atreides I · 2017-07-20 07:04

Sipho Nkosi · 2017-07-20 15:27
alcohol is pleasant in low doses but definitely not my favorite drug. I only drink on rare occaisions.
BLUEHOOD · 2017-07-24 05:22
I am currently deployed overseas. I have a friend, one of the odder people I've met, who is like, one-hundred pounds sopping wet. Real tall and mousy. Their preferred alcoholic drink was the Manhattan and they used to smoke a lot of cigars. It was like their tastes didn't match up at all with their body.
I don't know how my friend Rose is these days, but I miss her, and I find myself drinking a lot of Manhattans and wondering.

When I do drink, this is why. I'm horribly introverted; people comment fairly frequently about how quiet I am. Getting that little buzz on really helps me come out of my shell and feel almost like a normal person.
Chani · 2017-08-13 22:06
>>631
Thing is it's easy to get into a vicious circle with that, like you drink to feel less introvert so you end up doing/saying stuff you wouldn't usually do/say because you're drunk and you wake up feeling like soykaf and more introvert than ever, so at the next social event you drink to feel less introvert... and so on
Fortunately most of the time people around are also drunk and they also do stupid soykaf. They also tend to forget

> the line between withdrawals and hangovers isn't exactly clear to a point
I read an interview with a scientist who said a hangover is thousands of micro-withdrawals all going off in your brain like xmas lights.
The more severe withdrawals you get after seven days and nights straight drinking, the kind that make you miss a good old fashioned Monday morning with headache and tunnel vision, are a little piece of Hell itself drilled into your brain and soul with your body being strapped to a tornado of anxiety and nausea.
Cereal Killer · 2017-08-13 23:34
I made myself like it.
I was brought up in a culture where alcohol is a taboo, perhaps more so than any other drug, due to its accessibility and popularity. I was protected from even the sight of drinking people until a certain age.
Then I grew up. I was still a kid, but I suppose was a more grown up kid. Despite the way I was brought up at home, I was never afraid of alcohol. I was actually feeling adventurous and experimental about any drug. Must be the popular culture and the internet. I drank my first beer with my highschool classmates when I was 18. I didn't want to embarrass myself, never went beyond "trying it".
Then I moved out for university. I started experimenting at my new home, on my own. I tried wine, vodka, gin, what have you. Mostly drank while staring at my screen, either chilling, fapping or playing games. I drank out of carefully measured cups that I prepared. Had days I threw up in the bathroom while soykafting and passed out. Days I threw up right after I woke up. I learned what it feels through experiments like this. Perhaps more importantly, alcohol became into something uninteresting for me. I'm not sure for the better or the worse.
Nowadays, I don't refrain from drinking, but I know better to never overdo it. I also don't have a lot of money to spare.
Kind of funny my parents have started drinking occasional glass of wine or beer. Probably due to same kind of curiousity I had. I think I played a role in their decision.

That sounds scary. It makes me want to test it.

I've always looked at alcohol as a dirty drug. I do partake, but mostly for social reasons. It's hard to have a social life and not ever drink.

Started drinking periodically around 18. Sometimes alone sometimes with friends
Eventually i moved away and lonely and started drinking to cope with boredom and leftover emotional anguish from the teenage years
Drinking 2 fifths of stolichnaya every week... straight. Stoli still tastes somewhat sweet to me
This last summer i was emotionally cycling a lot and destroyed the few new friends i made in the past few years. Had to get sober from a different drug and to cope i started drinking a lot. 3 fifths a week
Then one day i snapped and landed in a mental hospital for the 6th time in my life, for 11 days
I like alcohol a lot. But any kind of downer destroys me. I like drinking a little bit to help ease social inhibition, but when i start drinking alone and needing to drink i begin to really hate myself and think about cutting or killing myself
Havent drank in over a month and honestly ive never felt better (also been sober from all other drugs too). Been years since i spent more than a week sober from anything
Jean Dupont · 2017-12-15 06:16
I genuinely enjoy the taste of most alcohol, from beer to hard liquor. If it's not vodka, and it's not bottom shelf (except tequila) then I like it.
My goal isn't ever to get drunk, and the only things I drink other than liquor are lots of water and coffee or an energy drink in the morning. But I drink a lot of liquor. Every day I struggle with wondering whether I should be drinking it instead of something else, and whether I would actually be doing anything productive if I wasn't buzzed or if I'd just fill the void with some other thing.

I have given up on beer. Never liked it really, drank it straight down for the cheap buzz with friends. But since the last time i got sick my body just rejects it. I have settled with cider even though i dont like sweet drinks, wish it was as cheap as beer.
