It definitely makes me fall asleep more quickly. I feel better in the morning, probably because I get better sleep. The methylphenidate is just to get me good and stimulated. I use fluoromodafinil and sunifiram to stimulate myself further, but those are research compounds with no official human testing, and I don't recommend them or use them regularly. I've also used piracetam and oxiracetam. Both are as good as the research behind them is valid, but oxiracetam gives me a noticable buzz.

>>5 >uppers galore that seems like a lovely stack for productivity, though not necessarily for what you may have intended Present Day, Present Time! AHAHAHAHAHA! >i was going to code all day but instead i created a system where my books are organized by genre, then author, while simultaneously being holistically color coded i'm curious: do you take the medications to offset AD(H)D, or purely for their nootropic qualities? my stack varies by my day's needs. generally, my stack has been great in its own right, but i'm working my way through some fairly heavy depression, and the resultant behaviors often negate the benefits: -a non-existent sleep cycle/frequent all-nighters -fairly heavy regular alcohol consumption. -generally poor diet; i eat healthy but am very good at not eating -tricyclic antidepressant that said, here's the dailies and their general doses: 700 mgs N-Acetyl Tyrosine 1000mgs Acetyl-L-Carnitine 200-500mgs Phenylpiracetam Spring Valley "Super B Complex" vitamin 2 - 6 cups of strong coffee throughout day with L-theanine Plenty of water (the most based nootropic) In addition, I take 300 - 600mgs of Adrafinal when low on sleep, really need to focus, or need to focus fast. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a Modafinal replacement, it works extremely well for alleviating sleep deprivation, as well as providing energy and focus. I also use Phenibut in social situations, from 500 - 1500mgs+. I don't take it regularly and make sure that I don't use it more than a few days, at reasonable doses, at most. As a person who often feels social anxiety, it's a lifesaver. Occasionally, noopept and [vinpocetine[/b] are used, particularly when I'm writing, since it helps combat my tendency to ramble. both of these have been invaluable during my periods as a freelance writer.

Do these drugs really work? I did a quick Google search and "smart" drugs sound too good to be true. Is it essentially stimulants?
maps · 2017-04-19 06:10
>>7 their branding as smart drugs is really misleading. they're definitely not going to make you any smarter, a la limitless or understand. a stack's general purpose is to support brain function, rather than increasing it. to generalize, most of them help by making it easier to focus, providing energy (as yes, some of them can be quite stimulating), increasing concentration, enhancing memory recall, etc - in other words, whatever their method of action is, they generally assist some cognitive function, wherein their benefit lies. but again, there's a whole ton of them, and they each have different effects and usecases. phenibut, for example, affects gaba receptors, which generally has anxiolytic effects, so it's very helpful for treating social anxiety (and can be like being pleasantly drunk at high doses.) l-theanine is commonly combined with caffeine because it potentiates it, and reduces effects like the jitters (and alternatively can be used to relax, funnily enough). all the -finals are wakefulness drugs that can be very stimulating if awake, or negate sleep deprivation. i'd figure out what you're looking for in terms of effects, then try for yourself. ymmv.

>>6 >though not necessarily for what you may have intended As long as I outline my goals for the day or next few hours, I usually accomplish them. Though if I'm not careful that does sometimes happen lol, one day I planned on getting a bunch of math work done and instead wrote a website or some soykaf >i'm curious: do you take the medications to offset AD(H)D, or purely for their nootropic qualities? It's a bit of both. I have ADHD, but I respond very strangely to MPH for someone with that disorder. Most people with ADHD claim that MPH paradoxically makes them tired / calm. For me, it does help with the attention problems, and helps me sit still, but other than that I get all the euphoria and energy a baseline person would. And I love that buzz, without fail I can usually get loads of soykaf done in the morning. Also, I should add I do drink fuarrrk tons of water to compensate for all the stims. Anything else is asking for an early death. >phenibut This stuff seems really useful since I too have occasional awful social anxiety. The only thing stopping me from buying some to try out was money constraints, I decided the modafinil analog was more useful. I'll probably try it out once I start going for job interviews next year >>7 >Do these drugs really work? IDK, do they? Drugs have both subjective and objective effects. The former you can determine yourself (this makes me feel high/productive/relaxed) and the latter come from research, for example the memory improvements piracetam supposedly gives. For the latter, you cannot be 100% certain that the drug is affecting you the way it affected the research groups. But for well-tested drugs, like l-theanine or melatonin, you can be close to 100% certain that it helps you in 1 or 2 ways. Like >>8 said "smart drug" is misleading, and ymmv. I say do your research, and decided for yourself how much of a risk you want to take. If you absolutely value your wellbeing stick with caffeine and the most harmless noots.

>>568 I'm >>5 . I've taken Concerta since I was a child for ADHD. I started using Ritalin 5mg in college. At the doses I listed, the stim gives me a nice focus boost. Distractions are less meaningful and it cuts away at some sleep deprivation. There's a bit of euphoria as well. For me, the benefits only scale with the dose up to about 72mg Concerta and 15-20 mg Ritalin. At 108mg Concerta, I get greater euphoria but it's not better than 72mg for working. This depends on your body chemistry and weight, but I don't recommend ever exceeding 108mg Concerta or repeating doses of it to stay awake. I had some bad experiences each time I tried the latter: panic attacks, going completely numb, racing heart, and fuarrrked up motor control. As for tolerance, ime 1-2 weeks of abstinence is enough to reset it if you're using it the way I do. Tolerance takes several months to build in my system. Also, please watch your heart rate when using it, if your heart rate raises when using the stuff, and you use it frequently, it'll fuarrrk up your heart. It seems that a good number of people have died from Concerta this way.

I've been using coluracetam over the past few days. 10mg sublingually instantly clears my head and calms me down. 20mg is stimulating, and keeps me wide awake, but seems to really fuarrrk my concentration and makes me a bit anxious (more than MPH does). Apparent effects last 3-4 hours for me, but may be extended with more coluracetam or oxiracetam. As for the supposed "HD vision" effect that's lauded on Longecity, I don't notice a marked improvement in my vision. However, visual details pop out at me more, as though someone turned up the contrast a bit on my visual feed. Today, when I combined it with oxiracetam before a lecture, a strange synesthesia-like thing occured. Small blotches of color would appear and move around in my peripheral, but only when the prof was speaking. It was very mild and not psychedelic, but it was interesting. No other noot has had that side effect for me. The only negative effect so far is headache. This is probably because I'm not getting enough choline, so I guess I'll eat more eggs. I haven't noticed any tolerance yet, but I'm expecting some as many people have reported a tolerance after several days of use. In all, I think the noot will be most useful for lectures and reviewing my notes.

I enjoy it a lot though. >>1189 When I generally stopped using racetams flmodafinil & coluracetam just came out. What is your take on them?
Dr. X · 2018-01-18 22:50
>>1227 Flmodafinil has much the same effect as modafinil, but is ~ twice as potent and isn't regulated. It's effective at keeping me alert and awake in a way that methylphenidate doesn't, and it gives me less anxiety than caffeine. But it doesn't help me focus as well as MPH does, and it makes my blood pressure ramp up if I use it continually. I couldn't seem to remedy this with theanine. Since it's much more potent than modafinil, I would be careful with initial doses. Coluracetam was interesting... I think that the long-term memory potentiation benefits are as valid as the research supporting them (so, I can't assume it works for that). But coluracetam had other strange side effects; I would get mild synesthesia, like seeing blips and colors pop in and out of my vision while hearing my professor speak during a lecture. Often my head would feel really clear, and it would be easier to focus, though I wasn't driven. Those effects would last about 3 hours. Coluracetam has a tolerance; use only 1-2 times a week to avoid that. Without tolerance, going above 20mg won't scale up the effects at all. After two weeks of continual use, it would take 30-40mg to attain those effects.

I'm new to nootropics and experimenting with theanine and caffeine. Trying those in particular because I consume a lot of tea daily, I practically take small doses already. I'm quick to get anxious, so caffeine and other stimulants are hard for me to handle. However, the theanine does an amazing job of dulling that effect in caffeine. The issue is that I come down from the theanine a good hour before the caffeine, which spoils my focused state. Should I take a higher dose of theanine, or maybe take a bit more one hour in?

>>1766 Yes i've tried. Ive tripped so much even 10-30 mg results in patterning, as sometimes I see patterning even when not tripping. However this would actually be fun and entertaining. The main issue is it starts off very good but dies down into a frustration about what to do with myself. It's common for this to happen to me on acid, where I get in a thought loop and just have no idea what to do and end up doing much of nothing. However it's so subtle with microdosing I can't catch it. It also makes it harder to focus, which makes sense. Naturally on acid it's impossible for me to do things I don't want to do. I simply don't care and will say nah and do whatever I want. On full doses its so evident that often times I won't extend basic social courtesies like if my friends are in a rush I will make no effort to gather my stuff quickly cause I don't feel like it. However on microdosing it just means if I have work to do and would rather draw I will just draw. Or get in one of the abovementioned frustrations and keep trying to work losing interest drawing back and forth back and forth. The only thing that actually helps me work is stims. Even cocaine, which people say doesn't help them focus. I lack interest in most things that i'm supposed to do. Stims say "Wait no those things are really interesting". Acid says "Hey man if you don't like it who fuarrrking cares".
Molly Millions · 2018-05-16 18:26
>>1769 I too sometimes see patterning completely sober, usually when I'm very tired. I think it's pretty common, no biggie as long as it's not making it hard to function. Microdosing doesn't seem to make it happen more. I agree that microdosing makes it harder to do things you don't want to do, but I think it conversely makes it easier to do things you really want to do. I consider "being productive" and "accomplishing things I really want to do" to be the same.

It literally cured me of my ADHD for a day, I would recommend it for first timers unsure of how to stack their drugs, although the effect becomes less pronounced if you use it on a daily basis, so take it sparingly when you need the utmost concentration

Also I feel that I can work at 100% efficiency for 90% of the day (7 am - Midnight usually) instead of only a few hours. It (sadly) does NOT replace a whole night's sleep, contrary to some articles I read about it years ago. You still need 1-2 hours to avoid literally nodding off as soon as nothing interesting happens (like in a lecture or in church) and around 4 hours (a full REM cycle) to function normally. Waking up is a chore because the pill takes 1-2 hours to kick in so I have to use my "normal" willpower to actually leave bed. Once up however and the pill kicks in, everything is fine. When fully rested I feel no difference.

Nobody important · 2018-08-23 19:30
>>2425 Well, yes that's actually the whole idea of it. They take a well known drug, which is in this case modafinil and make it legal for other people to use. People who create this kind of drugs are not willingly trying to kill you or fry you precious brain. That's not what they intend or are being paid for. Adding a fluorine compound can tweak a well known substance in many ways. In this case making it stronger than the original. But you can't call it fuarrrking poison for fuarrrk's sake! Yes, the process of adding fluorine can have a lot of different side effects, but it's not going to kill you that's for sure.
Armitage · 2018-08-23 23:39
>>2425 a pure substance and a substance in a compound behave radically different. Our body needs fluor ffs. So even that point is moot. Think about salt which is Na+Cl, the chlorine does not suddenly start to poison us when salt is metabolized either. And Cl is in the same group as F so this example is spot-on.
John Rain · 2018-08-25 02:18
>>2425 I'm not a chemist or a doctor but I did some napkin math. Please let me know if I fuarrrked something up or am generally wrong. Wikipedia says flmodafinil weighs 309.33 g/mol. I'm assuming that 1 molecule of flmodafinil gives you two fluoride ions when it's metabolized. Fluoride ions have a molar mass of 19 g/mol. I take 50mg of flmodafinil, so the amount of fluoride that I end up with is: 2 * 19 * 0.050 (g flmodafinil) / 309.33 (g/mol) = 0.006 g => 6 mg. According to Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluoride_toxicity) the lethal dose of fluoride is 32 to 64 mg Fl/kg body weight in most adults, and nausea starts at around 0.2-0.3 mg/kg. I weigh ~70 kg so the amount of fluoride I'm consuming won't even cause that effect. Now, long-term, heavy use of this stuff might have some impact on your bone health and other aspects of your body, since fluoride ions bond with calcium and make CaF2 or something like that, removing Ca from your body. I only take it on occasion though. My point is: the amount of fluoride you get from a reasonable dose of this stuff will not kill you or noticeably harm you. If you're going to call a drug poison, then be kind enough to demonstrate why.

I've got a basic stack to help mitigate the more cognitive symptoms of depression as well as stress and anxiety. I find it to be much more effective than any psychiatric medications as handling low mood and other symptoms of depression is much easier when your mind is clear and active enough to deconstruct and defuse those symptoms and you have enough energy to engage in productive and healthy activities. Piracetam + Alpha-GPC + Ashwaghanda with breakfast and lunch. I also occasionally take LSD at recreational doses as I find it significantly reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety for up to 2-4 weeks after consumption. In addition, I've found that I've been more patient, relaxed and capable to adapt to life's stresses. It's quite a commitment though so I use it sparingly and only when I feel there will be therapeutic benefit (although let's be real, it's also a great time).

Nicotine as a productivity drug/self-med - six months later A while back, I started taking nicotine (gum, lozenges and patches) out of desperation to help me read, study, get chores done, etc. The reason being that I can't get diagnosed for ADD to get adderall, and nicotine shares many of the same properties. I posted here about it after a few weeks of the experiment, and I was still in the "honeymoon" phase with the drug. Here's my report after a much longer period with nicotine: Tolerance vs ongoing benefits: Nicotine tolerance builds up pretty quick, and the phase of "wow I can really do lots of soykaf" dies down after a month or so. What you are left with is a better memory, and somewhat better focus/awareness. So the biggest difference from the honeymoon phase is that your motivation goes back to normal-ish levels, meaning procrastination can still bite you in the ass. You can try to increase your dose (I went from the 14mg to 21mg patches, later went back to 14mg for other reasons), but at the end of the day you can't escape tolerance if you are taking a steady dose like lozenges, gum, or patches. The workaround I'm trying right now is vaping (bought a refillable pod/nic salts system). Compared to patches, a vape hit gives a big spike of nicotine in your system. If you combine vaping with patches, you can use vape hits to train yourself to do the things you're putting off. Vaping is very habit-forming, and not just in the usual sense: if you vape while doing chores, work, or homework, it reinforces that activity in your brain. I take a couple good puffs and a shot of coffee in the morning now, and I literally jump out of bed for it the moment my alarm goes off. It wakes you up instantly. While I say this, I've accomplished about twice as much this semester as I normally would. I took a real course load, read about 3000 pages worth of books, did basically half the work for a group project, held a part-time job, and never felt overwhelmed. Having a real memory is honestly amazing to me, I only have to study a bit and things just come to me later. Even programming or working in terminal, I only have to use commands or functions once or twice to memorize them. I feel like I have a bunch of lost years from not being on stimulants. It's painful to think about how unproductive, slow, and miserable I've been in the past. Unexpected side benefits: I have no desire for alcohol anymore. Alcohol was definitely creeping up on me, I would get wasted in my room every weekend, and even often on some week nights. Hangovers were interfering with my classes sometimes, and I couldn't walk by the drinks aisle at the supermarket without getting something. When I'm on nicotine, I can walk right by the drinks without even considering them. I go weeks without drinking, and when I do drink, it's a conscious choice just for the purpose of enjoyment. Even if I lost all the other benefits of nicotine, I'd probably keep taking it just for this. Similarly, I basically no longer feel social pressures, tfwnogf, or anything of that nature. Caffeine used to stress me out, paired with nicotine it's perfect. Withdrawals: I'm definitely addicted now. Withdrawals are mostly just disorienting in my limited experience. If I go a day without some nicotine, I'll get foggy-headed, a bit twitchy, and irritable. Definitely operating below baseline. If I wanted to quit, these symptoms (milder than a decent hangover) wouldn't be too tough to deal with for the week or two that they last, but I have no reason to stop, and have substantial reasons to continue. Unwanted side effects: If you aren't careful with dose, you will have high blood pressure and headaches. When I switched to 21mg patches, I was initially fine, but I lost weight (another unwanted side effect), and as a result the dose became too strong. So I went back to 14mg. I guess the silver lining here is that abusing nicotine is pretty much impossible. You will not crave an ever-higher dose. In this respect (as well as others), it is definitely safer than most other stims. Nicotine patches can dry out your skin, even if you rotate where you put them. When I have an off day, I take lozenges instead so my skin can recover.

I've been using phenibut for anxiety management. My thoughts: * Its categorization as a noot is questionable, but the fact that it reduces anxiety without being too mentally impairing allows it that distinction, imo. * Withdrawals suck. Like really fuarrrking suck. Similar to those with booze but the duration of use needed to get them is much much shorter. Even if you're just testing the stuff out, I would buy enough to taper down over 1-2 weeks. Tolerance shows up after 3 days, after 7 days you're just taking it to prevent withdrawals unless you increase your dose which I don't recommend. For me withdrawal effects appear after 2 days of cutting the dose. * It has a massive half life. For me it seems to be something like 12 hours, judging from how long the effects last. Because of this, if you take it repeatedly it will build up in your system, tolerance will build up even more quickly. Also if I've taken more than 2g in one day, when I wake up the next day my head will really heavy, as though I were drunk. * It takes 3-4 hours to reach its peak, so you may want to time it if using it to reduce presentation anxiety. * A 2g dose is enough to cut out anxiety and calm you without being mentally impairing. This is the main advantage I can see over things like alcohol. I can take it with things like stims and not suffer as much of the side effects. * Sedation will vary per person. For me, 2g is okay, especially if I'm taking caffeine. 3g has me nodding. It goes without saying not to take it with other sedating drugs. * Only slight euphoria at 2g. At 3-4g, I'm giddy. Music sounds amazing at >= 2g. Overall, I recommend it for occasional anxiety reduction without making you stupid. It's an okay recreational drug too. If you're at all susceptible to redosing or want a daily driver I would stay the fuarrrk away from it

Hello, I'm generally a quite high functioning individual. My factual memory is exceptional along with my reasoning abilities, and I have fairly average working memory; however, I've noticed myself extremely lacking in three, perhaps related areas. First, I've noticed that my imagination is limited to lines, I can't for example imagine sounds, textures, shades, or colors, it's also as if I'm viewing things with my eyes, extremely limited as far as focus goes. Second, I've noticed that my episodic memory is extremely poor, the details of two days ago are extremely fuzzy, and yesterday even isn't all that clear. Lastly, I tend to have some difficulty dealing with symbols, for example when working through a math problem I might do everything correctly except I invert a sign somewhere along the way or I might right a beautiful sentence but have it ruined by using the word access instead of assess. Are any of you aware of anything which can benefit this sort of thing? Preferably with benefits that extend beyond when you stop taking them. Thanks lain.

Even more so I'm very happy to hear that it cleared up your depression, it seems to me it is one of the most unjustly neglected treatments for a variety of mental issues like this. From looking through many of the popular psychedelics documentaries, you can see fairly fast that there was huge interest in making use of psychedelics for various treatment therapies. In fact, before the DEA got hold of the whole MDMA situation (I realize MDMA is not a psychedelic) there was when MDMA was growing to be the hot new thing, therapists liked to administer MDMA in controlled environments. The idea was to treat clients that have had some sort of PTSD inducing trauma in a one time session with MDMA, in order to open them up to think rationally about a series of events and give them a way to think towards the future unhindered again. I'm specifically referring to rape victims mentioned in the doc "ecstasy rising", many of which reported their therapies to have tremendous effect. LSD was sort of similar, except that it got too difficult to get official approval for clinical trials, and development too slow with the restrictions the government places on clinical trials. This is sort of off-topic, but it makes me reminiscent of terrence mckenna who always advocated we actually make use these powerful substances with supreme potential compared to their risks (https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/517818-psychedelics-are-illegal-not-because-a-loving-government-is-concerned). Instead pharma bestowed us a revolution of an unemotional, overdiagnosed society full of mental illnesses that need to be treated with quite more dangerous antidepressants. This is much more opinion than fact. I don't have much to back my words, just watch some LSD or molly documentaries and you will find these reoccuring themes, I just though it interesting to raise a point and possibly explain why we don't hear a lot about psychedelics for treatment.

>>3924 In my free time, I couldn't do anything. Anything I tried to do was too stimulating and made me feel like I was going crazy. The best I could do was binge-read manga or watch random mindless garbage on youtube. Sometimes even that would be too much, so I would sit there and stare at the ceiling and try not to think too hard. I would get hungry, but couldn't make myself eat. Then I'd get tired, but wouldn't sleep for more than an hour at a time, eventually giving up after several of these short periods of sleep. This just worsened the dysphoria I was experiencing. When I had actual obligations (work) I felt a little better because I was distracted from whatever my brain was doing. However it was difficult to think and I constantly felt like quitting and going home, though not to the extent that I'd override my good judgement. This was after two weeks of frequent (but not daily) 2-3g use. The nastiest of these symptoms lasted 3 full days, after which they started to dissipate. It took about a week to go back to normal. There are people who suffered from far worse withdrawals than I did, and people's brain and body chemistries vary enough that it's hard to say. Some people could use the stuff for as long as I did (about two weeks) and just feel soykaf for a couple days. Just read the reports of phenibut withdrawals, they're all over the place. Also, if you have experienced alcohol or benzo withdrawal before, the slingshot effect will apply here. I think that actually worsened my withdrawals.
Joey · 2019-06-20 02:00
>>3924 >>3933 I should add that worst case withdrawals are like those with any other depressant, and are far worse than what I had -- things like DT's, hypertension, severe dysphoria and depression, confusion, delirium, etc. That soykaf only happens when you've been thoroughly addicted to the stuff for a long time and stop it cold turkey.

>>3935 This may sound trite but learning is the best way to increase the desire for learning. Its like watching the first few episodes of a new series: Makes you want to know more. Even it at first you do not want to, just get started. If you feel that you can't do more, go for another 5 minutes then stop. Try to beat your time the next day. Long time ago when I first started seriously learning and reading books above my age (university textbooks when I was in the 11th grade) I would feel the overwhelming urge to sleed after just 15 minutes of reading. I stuck to it however and after forcing myself every day into the local library for about 1-2 weeks, I noticed that I could stick with a book for 2-3 hours at a time easily. Turns out the brain can also learn to learn, and learn to like learning. Aside from that, even the more powerful stuff like Modafinil, the x-racetams and noopept does not introduce the desire to learn.

>>4369 I've been trying to get over this too on and off over the years. I have a few tricks that sometimes help, but no silver bullet yet. Would love to know, so if you or anyone else figures something out let me know. The thing that works best for me (but is still pretty contrived, mind you) is to simply force a passion in something. I don't really have passion or even desire most of the time. The Buddhists must be jealous as hell, I hear that's what they try to achieve over multiple lifetimes or whatever. But it's pretty terrible. I mean I'm totally joking, I know this is illness and not the end of Samsara. Anyway I just take something I see other people are really in to or really want and try that for a while, start going through motions and making preparations and learning things. It's hard at first because I don't really care or want to do it, but eventually some kind of momentum builds up. I wouldn't say I learn to enjoy it, but I start to get some kind of itch like I need to finish what I started or something. It keeps me busy for a while. It turns down the volume a bit on the awareness of my numbness. But eventually it runs its course and I gotta find something else. I guess that's life. I wonder if I'm just normal and this is what everybody is doing, but I really feel almost nothing, want almost nothing, and I know that if I don't keep doing it I'll probably self-euthanize not out of sadness or distress but out of simply being tired of waiting.

Mini-review on those: Huperzine-A: Could just be placebo, but I think this soykaf worked. Seemed to give me more focus and clarity of thinking, all that. Not sure it actually helped my memory, though. I forgot what it was called and had to look it up. Black seed oil: Don't think I got anything out of it, really. At least, I didn't notice anything from it. Pregnenolone: Added this in because it's supposed to help restore dopamine levels, at least in schizos. I'm not sure if it worked as hoped long-term, but it definitely made me a little more active and motivated while I was on it.

>>4553 Why think it's broken? If you had low dopamine you would have symptoms like Parkinson's disease.
Motoko Kusanagi · 2019-10-22 23:51
>>4556 Okay, there's a lot to cover here, so buckle up. First, Parkinson's symptoms only show up if the dopamine loss is in certain parts of the brain. Parkinson's is fundamentally a disease which causes you to lose control over your muscles, because dopamine signalling in specific parts of the brain is very important for telling your muscles what to do. If you have any sort of problems with dopamine which aren't in these parts of the brain, the symptoms won't look like Parkinson's much, if at all. Second, you can actually see signs of damage slowly building up in older scans of Parkinson's brains, from before they had any obvious symptoms. There's unfortunately not a lot of data on this, but it's also been seen with other dementias. If you look at brain scans of the people who go on to have these brain problems in their later life, there are signs of shrinkage or damage in their brains going back into their 30s, or sometimes even 20s. It's only after decades of their brain cells eroding that they can no longer cope and start to show the outward symptoms we're familiar with. Third, I've actually had some mild Parkinsonian-type symptoms in the past, so I have pretty good reason to think something nasty might have happened to my dopamine neurons. It was a side effect from something I took, and it did eventually mostly go away on its own, but I'd rather do what I can to make sure the problem is addressed than just sit around hoping it's magically all good and will never show up again later in my life.
Turner · 2019-10-23 01:12
>>4558 I was half asleep when I wrote that. Odd I thought you said you thought it was low then rereading you never said that now you confirmed it true you have some Parkinson's symptoms anyway. This happens to me sometimes. L-dopa and NALT produce dopamine. Uridine increases dopamine receptors and so does nicotine while something like cocaine reduces dopamine receptors. I've read various claims iboga/ibogaine restores the dopamine system but I haven't found studies to confirm this. There also are other rereceptors involved in dopamine release such as glutamate receptors if I recall right and endocannabinoid receptors but I haven't done enough research into your type of symptoms. I mainly read about schizophrenia.

Sup Lains! I'm currently looking into nootropics to combat ADHD. I can't afford prescription right now and used to be on 27mg of Concerta until about 2 years ago. So far in my research on how exactly Concerta helped me is that its a Dopamine Re-uptake Inhibitor (DRI) which basically kept more dopamine in my head instead of getting processed out. Also that having more dopamine in your brain besides providing good feelings and focus, helps cut noise from other neurons. For my stack I was going to focus on noots that improve dopamine production, while taking some legal OTC DRIs; I'm finding OTC DRIs to be very few for obvious reasons. For the Dopamine/Norepinephrine I'm thinking L-Tyrosine, and possibly CDP Choline. I currently drink strong coffee in the morning from my moka pot and will either have espresso in the afternoon or if I'm chilling at home tea (mostly been drinking Oolongs). Therefor I don't see the point in caffeine pills, but am iffy on whether I should take Theanine as a supplement as well, since I don't drink tea daily. For DRI the only thing I have really come across that is readily available is Adrafinil. The main drawback besides having to take it early to be turned into Modafinil and staying in your body a while is that it can fuarrrk with your liver. Some sources act like it's fairly toxic while others act like its only really bad if you take high doses for extend periods of time. Other things I found that Wikipedia has mentioned is Chaenomeles(Flowering Quince) and Oroxylin A (found in Oroxylum Indicum and Scutellaria Baicalensis AKA Skullcap), but I didn't find any places that sells pills made from them online. Only other Nootropics I thought I might try are Aniracetam, Noopept, Oxiracetam, Piracetam. Oxiracetam in particular I have seen mentioned for ADHD. Any advice is appreciated. I know none of these are going to be as good as Concerta for ADHD, but anything that helps me in the mean time until I get healthcare is good.

Guthrie · 2019-11-20 03:40
>>4788 The thing is, even if I went generic they still are pricey per month compared to noots; which can last for 2-3 months. Also unlike with noots I have to pay out of pocket for insurance. Also since its a controlled substance insurance has to cover at least 2 visits a year just to maintain prescription. There will probably be co-pays because why not. Some people have also suggested the doc may want to retest me or since I'm a new patient see me a couple times in the beginning. So non Noots: Monthly health insurance, 2 doctors co-pays, monthly RX cost. Noots: 3-4 Noots every 2-3 months. Its far cheaper for right now until I get a real job.

>>4789 Magnesium L-threonate has some studies on it for ADHD. Zinc as well which is cheap. Omega-3s also. Phosphatidylserine is another thing being used with studies on it. In theory L-Phenethylamine can be used as a substitute for amphetamine based drugs but it's increadibly short lived and would thus require a selective MAO-B inhibitor to extend that but even with I can't say it would last long. Memantine also has studies on it for ADHD seems it works best combined with amphetamine like stimulants. As for anything dangerous to your renal system like Adrafinil if you take the risk you can reduce the risk with things like NAC, Silymarin (from milk thistle), and artichoke extract (which also is a nootropic via PDE4 inhibition).
Haruyoshi · 2019-11-20 17:40

What would a high dose be? I was hoping I will only need to resort to it if none of the racetams work.
Unsigned · 2019-11-21 07:15
>>4791 Well those are just things for liver protection in general. NAC is actually used by doctors for paracetamol overdose. NAC also is one thing said to help ADHD so that is another two for one. Adrafinil's liver toxicity I assume isn't from the drug itself it's from the metabolites of it and abnormal liver enzyme levels it leads to. It's the type of drug that normally would have a doctor telling you to monitor your liver enzymes through tests periodically. While modafinil has been tested for ADHD I would personally look elsewhere first if you can since there is a risk of a few irreversible side effects from modafinil and adrafinil even setting aside the deadly rare side effect there is still the risk of a movement disorder. In theory PQQ may be of use for some forms of ADHD but I haven't had much luck finding a study on it for that purpose. There was a recent Iranian study on saffron but take it with a grain of salt since it's a big business for some mid east countries and it's a small study. Tolerance, it's how your body responds to repeated stimulation. Coffee drinkers and smokers receive no benefit from caffeine and nicotine respectively for this reason. What should your "stack" be? A CNS stimulant is the only real "nootropic"; nicotine, caffeine, cocaine, etc, etc. Pick 7 and cycle them every day. The only thing to think about is if your body builds tolerance to CNS stimulants in general through use. I have never found a study that looks into multiple CNS stimulants being cycled so you have to decide that on your own. As for my own "stack", caffeine on Saturdays and nicotine on Sundays. Weekends are my biggest study days since I have no work then. Thus I use two CNS stimulants during that period, and allow a reset of 5 days during the week.

fsociety · 2020-02-25 23:58
>>5302 Actually before I forget. Anything that increases BDNF protects dopamine receptors. So selegiline isn't necessary and as I said it probably isn't useful for memory until you're old in age so unless better evidence comes of it's longevity promotion or if you aren't using it for depression treatment no point in taking it. https://www.nature.com/articles/35075193 Also what's up with the valproic acid? >>5299 Unless you have manic episodes or seizures or depression or schizophrenia I don't see any potential benefit. >>5304 >better ways to protect dopamine receptors maybe, nothing that ive come across though. the research on its pharmacology really is promising, no need to have an aversion to it just because its used as a pharmaceutical rather than a supplement, especially since these chemicals have gone through multiple clinical trials/studies and have very comprehensive documentation. >>5319 that study showed increases in D3 receptors but not D2 or D1, heightened/agonized D3 is associated with compulsive behavior and addiction. D2 is upregulated by physical exercise, which also heightens BDNF, and is associated with more positive things like reduced latent inhibition, improvements in parkinsons, and improved impulse control. if selegiline 'isnt necessary', neither is huge doses of NALT or other dopamine precursors, which actually increase oxidative stress in the same way L-DOPA does, both have functionally similar outcomes ie increased dopamine availability. also, valproic acid is more strongly linked to liver damage, endocrine disturbances, and metabolic dysfunction (only with chronic use). it does have the benefit of upregulating BDNF and other nerve growth factors though, and while slightly weaker as a gabaergic, it doesnt seem to induce tolerance to the same degree as benzodiazepines/phenibut. its arguably the least compelling thing on the list, and has restricted usage scenarios as a nootropic, but HDAC inhibitors in general are an interesting class of drugs, the ketogenic diet is also interesting for this reason. also, BDNF isnt the silver bullet of healthy brain function since excessive amounts for extended periods can cause premature depletion of neuronal stem cells. >>5303 thanks king

>>5326 D3 is involved in cognition too though.
The Fin · 2020-03-01 06:02
>>5329 typically D1 is considered the most important receptor in cognition, the D2-like family (inc. D2, D3, D4) are inhibitory, and more involved in reward, particularly D3 which is upregulated by many different addictive things and contributes to a sensitized reward response. BDNF is an anabolic signalling molecule, and hence part of the bodies anabolic system which is designed to be activated when there is a lack of stressors, plentiful food etc, so it makes sense that it would downregulate functions which are most useful in times of stress, like heightened environmental awareness and low latent inhibition, and instead upregulate functions which contribute to, lets say, a heightened hedonic response to indulgence. if you are going to upregulate dopamine receptors you are better off upregulating D1-like for cognitive enhancing effects or specifically D2 for faster learning/creativity. how that can be done reliably+safely is not something i know of, but cycling of D2 agonists (as in eg bromocriptine) may provide similar benefits. (there are no selective D1 agonists commercially available)
Ivan Petrov · 2020-03-01 11:33
>>5373 Well point being made was D3r increase sounds good under right conditions not that it's a solve all. Wouldn't an uptake in D2 receptors cause an effect and side effect like first gen antipsychotics though? I may be confusing how receptor density effects things though. You may find thymoquinone (from nigella sativa) interesting. It's an HDAC inhibitor, ACHe inhibitor, may increase BDNF (though mixed results in studies), protector of glutamate toxicity at NMDAR and is renalprotective.

>>5845 I do not have ADHD so this is my perspective of someone using it purely for increased brain performance and less sleep: In using it for around 3 years essentially daily I had zero dependency. Actual dependency I mean. I stuck to strictly 1 pill a day (200mg) unless I pulled an all nighter then it was occasionally 2 pills. It pleasantly boring in its effect: First week, I felt a bit robot like with muted emotions (and that made me very very happy, lol), then it was just a feeling of not tired. No shaking or excitement like caffeine. Cons: I tended to push more and more when it came to no sleep, settled around 4-5 hours of sleep a day which was definitely not good since the idea was to use it to become smarter, not to stay awake longer. Learning effect was mild but pleasant: I had less motivational troughs throughout the day, still it was easy to have motivation for the wrong stuff like wasting time in front of the PC. Moda will not turn you into a better man, it will make it easier for yourself to turn into a better man.

I use these snus like (but tobacco free) pouches, even the fairly weak ones are too strong, but you can just keep it in for a much shorter amount of time, mabe even reuse the pouches if it doesn't disgust you. It's the same story with nicotine gum, although with the 2mg ones I don't have such issues. I'm not sold on whether people should actually try to use it as a nootropic, it has too high an addiction potential. I've been taking a variety of vitamins on and off, but few that could be considered "Nootropic". I have recently taken to Gingko Bilobo (60mg). Do not believe the skeptics, this soykaf works. I take this twice a day with 3 Fish Oil (1200mg) capsules (containing 300 mg Omega-3) a day. I have previously tried Brain Force Ultra, but have purchased regular Brain Force that has yet to come in the mail. Some people say that Vitamin D3 is a nootropic, and I was on 10,000 IU a day until I ran out two or three weeks ago. I plan to buy some more. Other supplements I've taken on and off include Nascient Iodine (various effects), Vitamin B12 (mood, energy, vitality), Zinc, Vitamin C (large amounts for Wuhan Flu), Magnesium (because zinc depletes it) and many more. I had a drink mix made from beet powder, and another made from wheat grass and various mushrooms but those are depleted. >>10071 Well, the entire thing is truly a science so study is nessesary but to explain simply there are 4 known brainwave frequencies in the human brain, all organized by their hertz range. The are Beta, Alpha, Theta, and Delta. The brain can be put into these states through an effect known as BInaural Entrainment where two seperate audio tones are played through headphones, and the brain renders this as a third audio tone halved of the two. Your brain fluxes into these states naturally but by artificially inducing them, it allows for a more digital kind of vibration. This kind of stuff was used in Project MKULTRA and Project Stargate. While the brain is in these states, it is also more reeptive to subliminal information. A literal programming state is in the lower frequencies. Some (but not all) utilyze this to allow subliminal (or liminal) messages to play and enter the subconcious. Of course, subliminals do have affect without entrainment. The Youtube channel 30 Minute Mindset is a wonderful catalogued example of subliminal tapes for health and wellbeing. Hypnosis is its own field. Being here, I hope that no one is stupid enough to respond "I don't believe hypnosis is real." Entering a light trance is another natural state. You trance all the time. Long car ride, looking out the window? That's a trance. It's just that those that dedicate themselves trance deeper. In your hypnosis trance you can enter programs. One program I still have running is that when a bad memory comes back up I stop myself, I force myself to look at the memory, and I fast forward and rewind until it turns black and white like an old movie, which it is. One example of a program. NLP is another science coming from psychology which uses certain linguistic techniques to influence the thinking of another. It is an entire field of study. These are only basic examples. It took me quite a few years to be able to actually make it work. I have been doing meditation and hypnosis tapes most of my life though. Lucid Dreaming, different states, Quantum Jumping, total psychonautia. That's the higher-end. The Law of Attraction is real, study the Seven Hermetic Principles.

>>10093 This thread is about nootropics, not the larger debate of the affects of Phytoestrogens on men. It was you that brought up soy at >>10069. I am not sh*lling Brain Force nor am I being paid to promote Brain Force. I only was listing supplements I presently take and have taken in the past. I think that Brain Force is a fine supplement, though there are things better and worse. I think your anger isn't at the supplement, nor at me, but rather at Mr. Jones who manufactures and sells the supplement. I will not enter a commentary or defense about him in this thread but I will say you have most likely been incredibly misled as to what he actually says and believes, and you are putting your anger out on me because I am a purchaser of his products.

I bought some kava. Gonna try it this weekend. I know it's more of a mind-altering drug than a nootropic, but I read that it can have sensory-enhancing effects and improve memory. This makes it effective as a story-telling social drug in Pacific island cultures. I'm interested to see if it's effective at making me more creative and sorting my thoughts while still letting me be functional.

>>10120 Update, it worked as described. It made me more talkative but over time the sedation kind of took over. Notably it wasn't particularly impairing, I just felt relaxed. Not much to say about memory enhancement. Not much to say about sensory enhancement either. I did feel more sensitive towards noise but more in the sense that I wanted things to be quiet so I could enjoy the silence. The biggest practical benefit is that I got excellent sleep with it. So not really good as a noot for working hours -- but it could be a really good sleep quality enhancer if you use it in moderation.

Any opinions on the superior choline source? >choline bitartrate >CDP choline >Alpha-GPC >DMAE Which one do you use and what are your subjective experiences?

>>10144 >Alpha-GPC Works well in a noopept stack, will make you extremely horny every so often though. I tend to find it gives me a pretty bad headache after it wears off, but the energy spike is undeniable
