This one went from vidya screenshot, through hexeditor glitching, then into audacious which.. broke the image and all that was left were 120x80px of noise. Which I blurred, colored and upscaled unto this, which, uh, probably wouldn't be recognizable as glitched anymore, although even the header was damaged enough that it couldn't be opened in an imageviewer anymore. Oh well, whatever, have this stupid pointless OC.

Next step is to drive the amount of glitching using an audio file.

Anonymous · 2015-09-03 14:57

The ufraw plugin is for handling raw images from digital cameras, it's not raw in the usual sense - it still has a header. For improting headerless images try the one with extension 'data'.

What I find interesting is that Databending results somewhat depend on the encoding format.
Glitch art in the purest form is art produced unexpectedly, like the eponymous MISSINGNO was.
When developing programs (esp. graphical programs) one will often be surprised by glitch art.
The first pic is caused by a glitch in my malloc() function for skullcode.
The 2nd was caused by cache invalidation failure, so old data was used with new code.
The third pic is a glitch caused by enabling the scan line mode of skullcode without double buffering enabled.
Another form of glitch art that I rarely see in the glitch scene, which is familiar to developers and some gamers is the interactive glitch. This can happen when a glitch surprisingly appears and some form of the viewer's input can affect the glitch to varying degrees.
I should start recording some of those when they happen, they can range from pretty, to funny, to disturbing.
There's a "Beautiful Fails" thread on Tig Source that's worth checking out if you like this sort of thing:

I'm sure most of you are aware of this. but if you get heavily into some of the exploits and glitches in first gen pokemon games, there's a lot of interesting code and interpretations of input to be found. Particularly with the pokedex. Here's an excerpt from a site dedicated to the topic
>In Generation I and II games, the variables used to refer to a specific Pokémon are large enough to hold 256 possible values (including 0); this is because variable sizes must be powers of two, and the next smallest size is 128 values, which would not have been sufficient. A similar situation exists in Generation III and IV games, with the variables each being able to hold 512 values (again, including 0).
Here's the site it was pulled from

This is from a program that uses a genetic algorithm to munge code in an image encoding library. Each frame represents a different variant of the encoder.
The downside is that this produces HUGE gifs, and sometimes hits edge cases in PNG that make the result decoder-dependent.
If people like this technique I can do runs on arbitrary images, just post pngs.
Anonymous · 2015-09-15 06:05
>>1594
Another example
Anonymous · 2015-09-15 11:15
hex edited .png screencapture since every time I glitch a png I corrupt it totally, but feh can still open it for some reason.
Also having trouble with the audacity method, but I'm sure I'll get it.
Also, a glitched gif from hex editing every frame and putting it back together.
Anonymous · 2015-09-18 02:07
Anonymous · 2015-09-18 03:44
I've written a little program to apply sequences of per-pixel transformations to an image, specifying how to combine the results. Attached are some examples.
It's rather limited at the moment, as it can only do per-pixel transformations, rather than whole-image transformations. Transformations are also deterministic. So no random glitching possible yet.
Anonymous · 2015-09-18 03:45
>>1616
Note: the program itself doesn't generate the animations. Rather, each frame is a distinct set of parameters, which were combined together into three gifs.
Anonymous · 2015-09-18 07:26
>>1616
I really like this. It should be pretty easy to do a game of life dealio to get some effect in the contours as well as the color.
How do you define the parameter space for a whole gif?
Anonymous · 2015-09-18 14:12
>>1619
The way it basically works is this:
for pixel in image:
let (r', g', b') = f (pixel.r, pixel.g, pixel.b)
pixel.r = combine(pixel.r, r')
pixel.g = combine(pixel.g, g')
pixel.b = combine(pixel.b, b')
Then with different choices for `f` and `combine` you can get different results. The whole process can be iterated with multiple parameter choices to get more interesting effects.
The currently available transformation functions are:
- lightness: (r, g, b) -> (maximum (r, g, b) + minimum (r, g, b)) / 2
- average: (r, g, b) -> (r + g + b) / 3
- luminosity: (r, g, b) -> ceil (0.21 * r + 0.72 * g + 0.07 * b)
- red: (r, g, b) -> r
- green: (r, g, b) -> g
- blue: (r, g, b) -> b
And the combining functions are addition, subtraction, and replacement.
Note that the transformation function only gets told the RGB value of the pixel, nothing more. I need to pass in the entire image and the coordinates or something to do more interesting transformations.
The gifs are pretty simple. Firstly I made all the frames by taking all combinations of two transformations and two combinations:
#!/bin/bash
combines="replace add sub"
transforms="lightness average luminosity red green blue"
for c1 in $combines; do
for t1 in $transforms; do
for c2 in $combines; do
for t2 in $transforms; do
echo $c1 $t1 $c2 $t2
img $c1 $t1 $c2 $t2 lain.jpg lain-$c1-$t1-$c2-$t2.jpg
done
done
done
done
Then lain1.gif is lain.jpg + lain-add*.jpg, lain2.gif is lain.jpg + lain-sub*.jpg, and lain3.gif is lain.jpg + lain-replace*.jpg

I made a banner inspired by the one on the homepage. This does have a bit of post-processing in GIMP, as there's no way to add the green overlay currently. But I've figured out how to nicely express more complex transformations like that to the program, so I'll be adding it.

A nice thing with this kind of art is that you can save a "hidden message" in your file, which other people can read. It's a kind of a fun way to think about how certain sentences can change the actual image.

you can use djpeg (a utility from the libjpeg package) to see what quantisation tables an image uses with something like
djpeg -verbose -verbose <image> > /dev/null
this will display as a matrix which, in the file itself, is stored linearly and populates the array in a zig-zag pattern, so something like
01 01 02
01 01 03
02 03 05
would be stored
01 01 01 02 01 02 03 03 05
so search for it interpreted that way in your hex editor or whatever

Anonymous · 2015-10-04 21:37

Loads of editing in the GIMP. Layer masking is like magic. There's two main images that I glitched and stacked them. The area around the eye is the background rotated 180 degrees using an egg shape to mask out what I want to show. The streaks are just adding and taking away from that mask. Then a pentagram set to grain merge between that egg mask and the base layer. The eye is just copied and pasted a bunch and the rest are just random brushes I use.
If you can learn how to use layers and masking you can do pretty much everything you want. The rest is practice. I have a ton more images in this style but they aren't glitch.

Yes, although the original art isn't by me.

Distorted and original, which is also OC, in wallpaper size

Noob here, I have a question.
After I export an image file into a raw ".data" file, how can I return it back into a useful image?
Anonymous · 2015-11-05 22:29

I stole your pic
so it only looks like this in photo viewer if I open it in gimp it's just black so I had to take a screen shot of it in full screen to get it into a postable form
Anonymous · 2015-11-06 23:34
First attempt. It's deep and meaningful.

I used Gimp + Audacity. I'm not sure about the compressor and phaser.
Anonymous · 2015-11-17 22:08
Hey, this is pretty cool. Thanks for giving the audacity program on my computer a new purpose.

thanks; the gallery I submitted them to had second thoughts the last one tho.

Wow, you can actually get galleries to take this? Have you made any money off of it?
Anonymous · 2015-11-20 15:53
There surely has to be easier way to do this with gifs and webms?
Anonymous · 2015-11-21 03:07

>Wow, you can actually get galleries to take this?
Surprisingly yes; it was a student gallery and the coordinator seemed overly enthusiastic to showcase my work.
>Have you made any money off of it?
Nope; this was my first try tho. Everybody was quick to say how much they liked it but never put their money where their mouth was. :<, today was the last day. Then again I wasn't expecting much since they rejected "7/11 Was A Part-Time Job".

Audacity's echo and reverb create these neat oversaturated prismatic things.
>>2581
Radical. How do you do this horizontal streaking effect?

>Audacity's echo and reverb create these neat oversaturated prismatic things.
Yeah, and Change Pitch/Speed yields this effect.
>How do you do this horizontal streaking effect?
It just looks like a simple pixelsort; use processing.
Anonymous · 2015-11-30 15:58
>>2596
The other poster is right, it's pixelsorting. I used asdfpixelsort.
Results can be pretty hit or miss, but it's fun for a while.

The Bacon painting is exactly what I want to achieve with a picture of myself. Thanks for the tip.
Otherwise, what should I know about image processing for doing databending using Python?
