Lainzine 5
lit · 2017-08-25 04:54
This is the thread for the development of the Lainzine project. This thread is solely for discussion of the development of the fifth Lainzine.
It is preferred that submissions be in TeX or LaTeX format, with comments denoting messages towards the organizers, but this is not required and any well-documented format will probably be accepted. Any number of submissions is permitted and those wanting help with their submissions can ask for help from the organizers email or in this thread.
The organizers may be contacted at lainzine@lainchan.org.
It should be noted that plaintext submissions will largely adhere to a TeX format in most ways and this is another acceptable format for submission.
With regards to ease of formatting, it is expected that submissions should be able to use TeX macros defined for and by the Lainzine in order to more easily communicate intent with regard to formatting:
\lainurl{} % Format a URL consistently.
\laintitle{} % Format a title consistently.
\lainsegment{} % Format a code segment inline to its paragraph.
\lainprogram{} % Format a program as its own section. Other requests for such macros are encouraged and this post will be updated as more are added.

I've seen plenty of people here discuss articles they want to write or have already written that they'll contribute. I've been wanting to recycle an article I wrote and put on my website for the Lainzine, which shouldn't require much cleaning and refining by now.
It should be straightforward to collect enough of these articles and establish a reasonable building process for the Lainzine. While any good programmer should be able to write a script or something else that calls the reasonable programs to generate intermediate forms of articles and then compiles them into the whole, so other people could build the Lainzine, perhaps, I think this should wait until most of the articles are collected, so appropriate considerations can be made.
As for what I'd like to see in the fifth Lainzine, I'd like a greater emphasis on programming. My aforementioned article relates to this and I intend to fill a page or two with a code listing. It would be great to collect interesting little programs people may not want to write a full article for and collect these into its own article of sorts, with some commentary for each program.
So, my thinking is that the cover may be one of the more important issues for right now, as it seems like much of the other aspects are taken care of, but I could be misled, as I've not been involved with any of the covers.
Joe Bloggs · 2017-08-26 11:31
Wait I remember reading that there was already enough content and you they just needed to be proof read and typeset. Why do you need more?
Naomi Nascimento · 2017-08-26 16:48
I was wondering if we were going to wait a year before the next issue came out.
Cowboy · 2017-08-28 09:55
Could we have a rundown of people working on it?
Just interested if there have been some changes since the last issue.
Sabo Engle · 2017-08-31 02:02
Not sure if this belongs here, but I'd like to print the first few lainzines, what printing company was used last time? And do you still have the files used?

hi. so no idea who posted this thread, but yes, there is enough already submitted for a zine. all that's been missing for a long while now is the final layout being finished. intron was working on that, and it was progressing very rapidly and got to being around half completed. then he sort of disappeared and hasn't come back since, so things have been stalled.
had emailed and things, though, and it sounded like he was just waiting to finish a work project thing and would be back. then there was an "i'm free again!" email. and now it's been a month since then, so am ready to just start over again with somebody else maybe? (if he doesn't want to finish it).
also, junk has been gone since school started for him too, so.
that all being the case, could somebody who has a reasonable amount of experience with scribus poke me (through the zine email or my email, or rizon / freenode work too). will figure out how to do this all on my own, if necessary, but it would be quicker with help.
sent another message to intron just now and, if that goes nowhere, want to just make this thing happen. seriously, it has articles, it has art, it has front and back cover art, and it has decorative bits. all it needs is for the stuff to be put together in their right places
it's really frustrating..

It's currently Appleman1234, myself, and other interested parties. There are several individuals not interested in submitting articles and whatnot to those previously managing the Lainzine, for various reasons.

This is the organizing for Lainzine 5, which won't be released under a proprietary license. Rather than continuing as with the previous issues, details such as version control, organization, and whatnot are up for discussion. The current method for submitting articles is by posting them in this thread or email.

so what you're (abstrusely) saying is that you're going to dump all the work that's already gone in, separate yourself from the people who have been working on it, and start over with your own new version?
if you want to work with any of the material already put into the zine, please don't use any of my art things and make sure you ask all the people who've already put in work if that's ok with them..

The problem with all these free enterprises is y'all niggas kill the majority of your projects by bitching about details.

I don't give a fuarrrk who is running Lainzine. I just want Lainzine. If the motherfucker who can get it finished is a corrupt, shady bastard, better him then some lazy fuarrrk who vocalizes our concerns but can't put in the work effort.
Just get the fuarrrking zine finished. Enough of this bullsoykaf.

That's what I'm afraid of -- I'd like to see Lainzine keep going strong and get a regular schedule. Not an easy task, but I think it's worth it.
Dozer · 2017-09-03 00:06
On the topic of finishing the Lainzine and establishing a regular schedule, that's an important topic that I'd wanted to discuss.
It seems reasonable to aim for the fifth Lainzine having a release in December and perhaps having a release biannually for future editions. What do you all think of this suggestion?
Junk · 2017-09-04 21:21
hey barrucadu (or are you lisp? or someone else?), nice to see you finally put in some work for the zine. May I ask why you've created your own email for this project? we've been taking submissions at lainzine@protonmail.com, too. I daresay there's more on there, than you've received.
If we're ever going to finish this thing, you'll have to work with us. shmibs has access to all the content, layouts, and infrastructure we've been using. Click my name to send me an email. I'm busy with school now, but I hope to hear from you :)

barrucadu allowed us to republish something from his blog (which I am grateful for, of course), and that's who the post was meant to address. But it's a matter of whoever OP is. How can we know for sure? They're anonymous.
I was mostly referring to how applechan people have been treating this like their project, in spite of the fact that it's been handled apart from them, and they got mad because we didn't include their branding - on a picture they didn't even create. You can still taste the salt in how they haven't even included the latest release cover in the OP.
But that's not related to the circumstances, of course. Yall want a magazine, we have what you need. If you still don't trust me, know that I'm not a part of seph's project anymore (is there even a conflict, at this point?), nor am I affiliated with this place. Nonpartisan, like we've always said.
If you have something else to say, you can do that in a more direct way that doesn't give OP a reason to delete the conversation. Just shoot me an email.

How does it feel getting btfo by seph after betraying the site here?
Also lainzine when?
Aristóteles Amadópulus · 2017-09-04 22:46
>>639
Junk here's the craic. People who wrote articles were unhappy with you retracting the magazine to change the cover. They posted in that thread about it and you said you "didn't care" what they had to say. In private you told me that you were sure that it was me samefagging (for the record I've had nothing to do with this. If it wasn't for some offhand comments made on irc a month back I'd have been as surprised as you) because nobody else would address you by name and that you were sure all of the authors were happy with what you did. You were wrong on both counts. You were arrogant as fuarrrk and you still are. You acted, and still act to be honest, like their opinions don't matter because you're the one who did the editing. Intron said he'd be happy with a cover just reading "lainchan." In fact everyone except you said it wasn't up to them. Salt indeed, you happily took those people's work and then spat in their face and it's not even the cover. It's the claim that their complaints about it don't matter. That somehow, this community project, is yours alone and they, despite contributing to it, get no say because it was "handled apart from them" apparently.
They've decided they aren't giving you another chance. They're taking submissions of their own. There's nothing stopping you from doing the same but personally I'm submitting to them (I was half way through an article that I dropped because of your attitude) because I know that they'll actually appreciate it. Not to mention they might produce a release more than once in a blue moon. If it was just a bunch of random anons I'd be worried they weren't going to follow through, but it's not. Some long time mods have stepped up as well and they've seen a lot of soykaf through.
>know that I'm not a part of seph's project anymore
It was never about that Junk. You can't just ignore the people who did the work for you and tell them they don't matter and you don't care what they have to say and then expect them not to just say fuarrrk it. They were unhappy with the way things were being run. They decided they could do better themselves. I'm sure that's something you can understand. Isn't it supposed to be some sort of revolutionary imperative that's totally necessary? That's what you told me. The only difference here is that they just got on with doing it rather than being hostile about it, better men than me apparently. Oh, also that they're probably going to succeed.
Anyway, back on track,

and this is why kalyx left. both sites are ruined.
Demeere · 2017-09-05 03:13
>>640
I felt betrayed. I don't mind betraying "the site" because websites don't have feelings. people have feelings, though, and I know I hurt quite a few. I always did. My apologies are still there. Seph apologized to me, too. She said anyone working on lainchan could join alicechan. I've considered it, but I had to say no.
Kalyx hurt me when he sold the site and said he'd stay on board, but didn't. He was saying whatever it took to make the sale go through. Because he needed the money. How can I get mad? lainchan was dying before then, but that was the end. This is a graveyard to me.
Lainzine comes out when shmibs and nullmuse and whoever else is involved with that complete it. The project was always organized around the IRC channel, and e-mail, and that's where I know them from. It's fitting.
>>641
Jove, you were right about more than I gave you credit for. But you know I didn't say that. You just want to make a scene.
I wrote a whole thing out detailing why you were wrong but I realized it doesn't need to be public. I DM'd it to you on freenode. Let's continue this conversation in private. It's between us, so I don't want to waste anyone else's time with it.
>>642
Sadly, I agree. Whatever happens to these sites, though, we'll still be here. As long as I'm still here, I'll do what it takes for the magazine we created together. Because it will outlast this place.
I've tried to talk to OP on IRC, but he doesn't want to. There's nothing more to it than an old feud between two moderators on a now-dead imageboard.

I'm the founder of the lainzine, and an editor. We've been actively working on the project all summer. OP is trying to impersonate me, and censor my posts. I (and shmibs) also run lainzine.neocities.org, which is linked to in the top bar.

The Lainzine is a flat hierarchy, Junk, so that doesn't matter; we're all contributors. I'm not trying to impersonate you and you aren't being censored if you can point out how your website is being linked to in the top bar. I'm only enforcing the rules fairly.

I've seen people talking about emphasis on programming in this thread, but none on a specific topic. I think it would be cool for someone to write an intro to some language. Maybe an intro to C? I'm not well versed enough in languages people would find interesting (HTML/CSS and a little C) to write one, but if we have any good programmers in here willing to write one that would be cool.

C introductions aren't particularly novel. If someone makes it Lain themed, a parody, does it through a comic, etc. it would probably be fine. Although I don't know how picky the editors can be at this point.

What we need is for someone to write two articles, make an announcement for other submissions, set a deadline, and publish what they have when the deadline hits, do or die. I have enough material for one article done, so if I write another, then I can setup a website, email, deadline, and do this on my own. Or, someone else could beat me to the punch and I'd submit to them. Perks of making your own is that you can make the name and format whatever you want.
TL;DR
Realistically, only someone who has written content has the means to publish something and anyone who has written content can publish something.

Do you have access to the TeX macros / whatever? I have a draft for an article that goes into how to use the process_vm_readv and process_vm_writev system calls to read and write memory of another process on the computer.

Check the OP. Honestly. it doesn't really matter so much what the formatting is like. We have to read it over and reformat it to fit with the rest of the zine anyway. So long as you make it clear what you want that's fine.
Also, something I should be sure of before I say we've recieved your submission. It was the lainzine@lainchan.org address you used? The protonmail one belongs to Junk, we don't have access to it and we haven't heard hide nor hair of him since he was kicked off the .jp staff. The github was also his.

>Check the OP
I'm a little uneasy putting in macros which I don't even know what they do.
Anyways, I was mostly worried about if the size of the code / lines was effected. Should I just not worry about the way I include source code. The last snippet of code for example is longer than 1 page which makes it kind of awkward to include. Should I delete all the error handling code from it to make it fit in one page?
XERXES · 2018-05-30 17:28
>>715
So what mail address should we use ? I have sent mail to both and never got a reply.
Batou · 2018-05-30 17:51
>>716
The macros are mostly just there so we know what's going on. It all gets redone during typesetting anyway so don't worry about the details too much.
If you like you can put notes to the editor in. So if you want to demarcate which code is non-essential and let us make the decision based on how it looks when it's done then that's fine.

Yay! I was looking forward to this! Thank you!
I have a question from one of the articles -
https://lainzine.neocities.org/all-releases/lainzine05/txt/ghosts-in-the-shell.txt
> sed -i s/'rm -rf /var/run/1sh'/'init 0'/g /var/www/x/1sh
> sed -i s/'rm -rf /tmp/2sh'/'init 0'/g /var/www/x/2sh
> cat init 0 >>/var/www/x/3sh
This will look for "rm -rf /var/run1sh" in file /var/ww/x/1sh and replace it with "init 0". This would not delete anything AFAIK which is what the author intended.
From the gist of the article shouldn't the action be:
> sed -i s/'init 0'/'rm -rf /var/run/1sh'/g /var/www/x/1sh
??
i.e. put "rm -rf" into the runlevel scripts and ensure they execute with an echo
instead of cat.
echo init 0 >>/var/www/x/3sh
Or am I missing the point entirely, and it is just a short fiction story?

On a *nix system you could try:
sed ' 1i\

.ad b\
.hy 0\
.ce\
.pl 1' foo.txt |nroff
where foo.txt is the file you want to parse.
.in 0 -zero indent
ll 80 -line length 80
.ad -adjust both margins
.hy 0 -don't hyphenate words
.ce -centering IIRC
.pl 1 -I can't remember why I was using this. If I don't comment my code/script enough I always forget, because I'm so deep in the zone at the time I write it.

Perhaps for the better, this liberal arts tier writing in the "go-outside" release already killed the fun for me. What is it with society when people always want to be fatalist with claims like "Cyberpunk is dead". Cyberpunk will never die for as long as at least a single person cares, and even though Netflix completely RUINED the writing of the original Altered Carbon by heavy book spoilers: making the central villain his sister and writing out important characters, the whole sci-fi and cyberpunk genre does well. If cyberpunk is hight-tech and low lives, Altered Carbon is cyberpunk too. Even though some core elements as raiding mega-corps you'd expect from a Shadorunner'esque / Neuromancer setting are missing.
Honestly I care the most for the unreleased Lossless Data Compression && Growing Mushrooms. No idea where the Lainzine project is going, but I'd prefer a more upbeat writing. Cyberpunk and reality are dark enough, no need to give me the soykaf in literature too with fatalism.

Uhm can the Lainchan people clarify in the document that this is fiction? I went and read Lisbeth's story, and as a long time consultant I had a good laugh at the fanfiction on the page.

Security Consulting and the Future
Lots of grammar mistakes, the editorial has to do some proofreading.
The "facts" are barely believable. People adding random guy on facebook, medical professors adding random guy on facebook, as if they even frequent facebook for this lol, organ "cloning" whatever that is and whether it is worth to stop scientific progress (aint ya a fockin cybahpunk innit?) for a mere bounty of 5000 dead presidents, professors discussing organ cloning on facebook wall, a company that doesn't do background checks of all social accounts of their employees on their own, the whole story sounds like a bullcrap outta 13 year-old's mind who frequents facebook and is accustomed to adding strangers to increase his friend list.
Second story is 13 year-old's view of drug trading and darknet markets.
>le sekrit words for le sekrit message exchange
Are straight outta early century detective fiction. No one uses that since we have encryption, and sending a lul so randum xD phrase would raise suspicion of someone who took your contact as a hostage and has his decryption keys, it will only lead to more rubber hosing.

I agree that that's a low quality article. A lot of it smacks of fantasy and the predictions of the future might as well be the author smelling his own farts. Don't dismiss the Facebook stuff though. Creating fake social media accounts to investigate someone is very common. Facebook is the closest thing the Internet has to the street outside someone's house and I've never seen a Facebook user who was discerning and discreet.

No, the point was to remove the line where the script removes itself from the infected system, and put a system shutdown in its place.
The end result would be any time the botnet infected a new system, it would install itself, and then, instead of cleaning up, shut that system down. The owners of that system, once they brought their system back up, would notice that the last login was not them, and the infecting script was still on disk, giving them evidence of the intrusion, as well as the IP that infected them.

The magazines could probably get printed up at someplace like Lulu or the like. A vanity press printer. I don't know how the magazines would get delivered, though. One of the main points of a chan is anonymity. That gets broken pretty fast with mail-order.
I suppose what could happen is someone sets up an account a Lulu.com, or wherever, and people bitcoin the initial funds for a first run print. Then the printed zines get sent to indie bookstores that carry zines and indie publications and people head over to buy a copy or pick one up if it's free.
It'd be interesting to see if the zine could grow to the point of being split into multiple titles. One for programming and tech, another fiction or media, etc.

For issue 4 I had to add two pages from issue 5 (as there were 66 pages, and 68 is the next multiple of 4)
heres the script i used to make it all
python
#!/bin/env python3
import sys
def main(pages):
assert pages % 4 == 0
half = pages // 2
r1 = iter(range(half, 0, -2))
r2 = iter(range(half + 1, pages, 2))
r3 = iter(range(half + 2, pages + 1, 2))
r4 = iter(range(half - 1, 0, -2))
page_list = []
for i in range(pages // 4):
page_list.append(next(r1))
page_list.append(next(r2))
page_list.append(next(r3))
page_list.append(next(r4))
return page_list
def test():
assert main(4) == [2, 3, 4, 1]
assert main(16) == [8, 9, 10, 7, 6, 11, 12, 5, 4, 13, 14, 3, 2, 15, 16, 1]
assert main(36) == [
18, 19, 20, 17, 16, 21, 22, 15, 14, 23, 24, 13, 12, 25, 26, 11, 10, 27,
28, 9, 8, 29, 30, 7, 6, 31, 32, 5, 4, 33, 34, 3, 2, 35, 36, 1
]
if __name__ == '__main__':
if len(sys.argv) < 2:
print(f"Usage: {sys.argv[0]} <num_pages>")
exit(1)
pages = int(sys.argv[1])
test()
pl = main(pages)
print(str(pl)[1:-1]) # The indexing removes the brackets from the list
#for i in range(0, len(pl), 4):
# print(f"{pl[i]} {pl[i+1]} {pl[i+2]} {pl[i+3]}")
When you enter the # of pages into this script it spits out what order to print the pages in so that the centre is printed first and the outside cover is printed last
This way you only need to fold the printed stack.
Make sure to put two pages side-by-side, left-to-right and flip on the short side

scribus is an awful application and working around its issues has taken longer than expected. we have a few more finishing touches to add, I could post what we have but its definitely not in a ready state yet and I wouldn't feel good about putting it on our site. Expect completion sometime this week or next. I'll make a release thread for it when its done, didn't make one for lz6 because I was worried that it wouldn't get pinned.
here is a list of articles we will be printing:
You're Hashing It Wrong
I Am Your Virtual Host
Extracting Visual Novel Resources
How To Collect Garbage
Mass Surveillance in Russia
Lean and Mean: Devuan Linux Setup
DESTINY 吉凶
PHYSICAL SECURITY, or how to save your ass (and soothe your paranoia) after screwing up on the wired
potential VPN attacks

Zoe Nawar (twitter user @yungkitty404 and former McAfee campaign consultant)
Machine Girl (machinegirl.bandcamp.com)

physical copies soon tm

we're going to move to a continuous release for subsequent publications to move away from all the bottlenecks of releasing biggo PDFs. send them in whenever they're ready and we'll stagger them out (like we did with LZ5). txt always preferred but we also like HTML or something easily convertible thereto because we'll be hosting them as individual articles. we can do PDFs, markdown, LaTeX too.

Otto Normalverbraucher · 2020-05-17 20:42
So what's going on with Lainzine? Who's behind it? Is it Junk? Is it >>626 ? Is it a collaborative effort? It's been YEARS since the last zine came out. From the looks of it from the announcement page https://lainzine.org/announcements.html it seems that Junk is more interested in making more $$$$ instead of working on the zine. Who should I email if I want to send an article? Who's making the shots what should be in the zine and what shouldn't? Who has access to https://lainzine.org/? Do the current editors need help/more writers/art? From what I've gathered is that Junk and others fuarrrked everything up when they tried to leave for .jp which backfired and stalled the zine completely. Would lainchan be interested in dumping the lainzine and creating a new one from scratch? What say does Junk have in regards to the zine? What say does >>626

Thank you! Maybe I can add some more details:
>>847
He saw the zine and thinks its cool. I made friends with a record label up in Vancouver, the owner liked the zine and offered to support us. I saw that the label (burning kitty records) had scheduled a show with Machine Girl, so I asked Burning Kitty if we could get him for an interview. He agreed! And I have the whole interview now, it's one of the articles we still need to put some kind of art to.
>>852
I'm not really sure where you've been because lainchan.jp died 3 months after it started 2 years ago. It was renamed, and we all got kicked off the project, and then it proceeded to stagnate. Seph actually tried to bring Kalyx & co back on at one point to arisuchan but it got spammed to death. Pretty sure there's posts in this very thread about the first part.
>>853
>Is it Junk?
I'm the editor trying to release lainzine 6, as part of a team on keybase.
>Is it >>626 ?
shortly after this happened, "lit mod" got chewed out by Appleman because it was explicitly agreed upon between him and Kalyx that the lainzine be a separate project from lainchan. I appreciated the gesture.
> it seems that Junk is more interested in making more $$$$ instead of working on the zine
I made physical copies because some friends who liked the zine suggested I table it at a convention, and also because people have been asking for physical copies for ever. The copies were made half a year ago, before we had even closed the submission deadline for LZ6, and the shop was put up not long after. I realized it hadn't been mentioned in an announcement, so I made sure to include them as something to show for yall. Something like $200 was made, total, from the zines and all the money for online purchases goes to Reagan, the typesetter of lainzine 5 anyway. I'm more interested how we've done all this consistently for 6 years on no budget than any income from sales.
>Who should I email if I want to send an article?
if you want your article published on lainzine.org, email it to lainzine@protonmail.com
>Who's making the shots what should be in the zine and what shouldn't?
Anyone involved has the choice to not work on a particular article, if they don't want to. There haven't been any problems so far, but we don't publish bad articles.
>Who has access to https://lainzine.org/?
Me, Reagan, Auntie, and a new guy we brought on as a site designer.
>Do the current editors need help/more writers/art?
We don't need any more editing, writing, or art for this release, however we are accepting art - especially if you want to do an article-specific illustration. Right now, we need typesetters who have the freetime and patience with Scribus / importing the in-production copy to their publishing software to finish the PDF, basically. Feel free to talk to us on keybase to help out, if you actually want to release a lainzine.
>From what I've gathered is that Junk and others fuarrrked everything up when they tried to leave for .jp which backfired and stalled the zine completely.
You're mistaken if you think anyone besides me and one writer were involved with both the lainzine and seph. Actually, at the time of that happening, we had just released lainzine 4, and all that happened during the submission period for LZ5.
The zine was stalled by the same workflow issues we always have: that typesetting a 60-page PDF of all the articles is too much for one person to manage, but also difficult to coordinate a team over. People keep getting burned out. Which is why we released lainzine 5 as several different articles and plan to do that for future releases as well.
To answer your other questions: lainchan staff is not involved unless individuals from the staff want to get involved. "lit mod" was mistaken about the involvement of Appleman and lainchan staff's authority over the lainzine, although Appleman did help us with lainzine 5. This is all old stuff from >2 years ago so I am really not sure why you're bringing it up now, especially since a lot of it is in this very thread. If I made you mad somehow, I'm sorry, and I hope you're feeling better now.
I also want to add that we've been contacted over the past year by independent teams interested in translating the zine into Russian, as well as (possibly?) compiling all the lainzine 5 articles into a PDF. I'm not sure what they are currently doing, or if they want you to contact them.

the person who was supposed to be doing it just told me that they basically gave up and would have to re-do the whole thing from scratch again. You just don't have to use Scribus for it.
Also, the mushroom article has been up for over a year at https://lainzine.org/all-releases/lainzine05/txt/Mushtut.txt , i just had it be kind of a secret for discerning readers to discover for themselves.

scribus is actually an ok app - its got a few funny bits but all in all its bloody good (CMYK being the main thing that stops commercial use)... if you know indesign well you will find your way around scribus, with a little bad language.
Thing is indesign is not an easy app to use correctly... its very easy to get hands on in there, but DTP is more like CSS - its about creating the styles and framework etc to then place all the elements together... Biggest issue you will have fun with is setting maths! - you gonna have to do that by hand (indesign too)... Good luck!

yes its pretty much finished. doing a PDF containing every article involves getting a new typesetter for it or asking the former typesetter to start over from scratch, since they want to show significant improvement in the article designs.
lainzine 6 is actually almost finished, as it has been for months. i think we're going to stagger articles releases instead because scribus tends to crash on projects longer than 40(?) pages. and the person has been afk for a while now...

we've been stalled forever on lainzine 6 since no typesetters. however we have begun uploading articles as HTML pages to the site, and are working on a nice theme with static site generators. this isn't to replace PDF releases because people like them, but a stopover to show that we're still alive and also so the content is more accessible.
unrelatedly, here is an article i typeset and illustrated with GIMP a month and a half ago. we tweeted it out on 4/20 our birthday.
also, we are making a radio station. we already have icecast set up and in a couple weeks we should be doing DJ sets.
>>902
it died because typesetting is annoying, especially with what we're trying to do. we have lots of people who are eager to try but it is tiring to make a 50 page pdf with aesthetics oriented towards every article. we are probably going to wait until the future to be extra and just make a template or something because this has been taking too long.

Can't we just have a uniform LaTeX theme and focus on artwork in the cover / back? If you have a bottleneck in typesetting when compared to text output, you need to simplify it to reduce time to market.

This. Uniform LaTex, or just don't worry about it.

I'm also advocating for the uniform LaTeX theme. Quality of content and reasonable release times > design (to a certain degree)

I come back now and then. Just now I notice lainzine.org is featured on the front page of neocities.org, which is cool.

yeah, hi
I already plan to do a uniform latex template in the future. while these are good design decisions, and I am thankful for your polite suggestion, the issue is what the real skills available to us are - our typesetter volunteers didn't work with LaTeX before.
here's what I have in mind: latex templates will be used for non-visual elements, with gaps for images.
I just want to address some concerns that were raised by others:
>Difficulty contributing for new authors/artists
I'm unsure why this would be true: while we do have some authors who make multiple contributions, most of our contributors in every issue are new. Submission is as simple as emailing lainzine@protonmail.com . If you're talking about the fact that we keep a backlog, this doesn't prevent people from being published.
>Lack of communication
is this is about not responding to posts like >>907 and >>906 ? I ignore personal insults and bad-faith comments because flame wars are unproductive.
otherwise, I plan to resolve this issue by giving regular updates.
>No clear creation paradigm
this seems to be tied to the someone not being aware of our content backlog or submission guidelines. These guidelines are available at lainzine.org/submissions.html , and have been available for so long that they're due for an update. in general, we make releases based on the availability of content and skills, rather than quotas which may or may not be filled by promised deadlines.
I'm thinking about some kind of hybrid system with scheduled - maybe biweekly? - updates on our progress and release expectations.
