Classic CS Paper Reading Group
gitgood · 2023-02-03 05:50
Hello hello, me and a few other lainons were thinking of starting a reading group for Harvard's CSCI E-124 "Classics of Computer Science" course.
https://canvas.harvard.edu/courses/34992/assignments/syllabus
The idea is that over a 2 week period we would read a paper or two (depending on their complexity) and at the end have a scheduled discussion on what we learned, our thoughts on the paper and so on.
If you're interested in joining something like this share your thoughts here, or we can talk about it more on IRC:
#books on irc.lainchan.org:+6697 (SSL enabled)
Cheers,

Interesting enough that you convinced me to try IRC for first time in a good while.
Think I figured out how to view the chat with icechat, now It'll just take some getting used to :)

I am interested. May I suggest having the discussion here on lainchan instead of in irc? This way we can have longer form discussions, the discussions will remain for longer and be more accessible, the discussions will have more visibility which may entice more lains to join, and the discussion won't require people scheduling their freetime around being on irc at a certain time.

Ideally people would choose the medium that works best for them. It's a matter of perspective which you prefer, I'm personally of the opinion that real-time conversation is better for learning given the shorter turnaround time. For some people (and topics) it works to have a 15 minute conversation over a period of a few days and for others it's quite painful. Ideally there would be activity on both the IRC and imageboard.
The intention so far is to kick off on Monday the 6th of February, where we'll begin reading:
- Joseph Weizenbaum. “ELIZA—A Computer Program for the Study of Natural Language Communication between Man and Machine.” (~10 pages)
AND/OR
- Gordon Moore. "Cramming More Components onto Integrated Circuits" (~4 pages)
These papers will be the topic for 2 weeks, after which we'll schedule a mumble call for those that would like to join and discuss it in a typical book club fashion.
I'll create the kick-off thread on Monday with links to the papers, materials that might facilitate learning and so on.
Let me know what you think,

I know it might be OT, but I'm curious about your opinion on mathematics.
Moreover, I know most mathematicians are self-taught, and looks impressive how hermetic the new academic organisation is proceeding.
Shall we have a classic mathematical paper reading group in the future?

I am up for it.
In particular, I would be very interested in studying type theory and proof assistants alongside lainons.

mathematics is great for learning on your and fairly hermetic.
right name i am working my way thought these reading lists.
A mathematical paper reading group with other lainons would be great way to stick with it.

I would also participate. I minored in math when I was an undergrad and have missed reading and writing the proofs.

I enjoy reading mathematic papers and studying math by candle light I feel like an old worldwide druid

Assuming you guys don't already follow some mathematics blogs, you might be interested in regularly looking through those if this paper reading group thing never comes to fruition.
