XAMPP in 2022 (Yes, this thread again)

Nanashi No Gombe · 2022-02-09 14:21
Upon the recommendations of the users here on Lainchan, I've investigated better alternatives to developing sites without XAMPP. I have read from many here that XAMPP is outdated and that developing directly on a LAMP system is a better approach. However, nowhere in my investigation of this did I encounter any applicable reason to not use XAMPP. Under Windows 10 and Linux Mint 20, XAMPP works perfectly fine and shows no flaw preventing a developer from successfully creating a website. I am still able to easily develop on a local machine and transfer the finished work via FileZilla to the server. XAMPP provides a great frontend to Apache and MariaDB. I could not find a frontend (CLI or GUI) that makes turning on and turning off Apache and MariaDB as easy as in XAMPP. I am still able to easily transfer my work in WordPress from the local XAMPP server to the remote live server. The process is no different from doing so on a direct LAMP stack compared to XAMPP. >tl:dr - OP calls out everyone who says XAMPP is a bad approach to web development. No its not. It's still a practical means and a great tool. Can anyone dispute what I've stated with their own experience?

On systemd+Linux systemctl start mariadb systemctl start apache ... systemctl stop mariadb systemctl stop apache On MS Windows there are the equivalent PowerShell commands or the gui program to manage services For the rest idk. I'm not a codemonkey blue collar web-drone

>>30036 I don't think there's any reason to explicitly not use it. I've used to make few XAMPP sites few years ago and they worked fine. If you making "simple pages", as in some basic crud app, if even that, it's a fine tool to use. I think it's mostly just bad taste in people's mouth from old PHP. I do recommend checking other languages/frameworks if you want to do something more complex though. >>30037 > I'm not a codemonkey blue collar web-drone Lmao, why is there so much seething about web devs? I can only think of two things. Bad code and seething about high pay. While I'll admit that most terrible code comes from web dev, it's because web dev is probably the biggest job market. The second one is self explanatory.

>>30039 >high pay Maybe where you live. Here in Italy webdevs are literally assumed with a STEELWORKER contract and paid the same as a steelworker labourer To be fair most of them are hired right off the graduation from a technical high school

You're the PHP streetshitter from the "dead lang" thread, right?

It's not an issue unless you're also in charge of server administration.
