Personal Website

dup · 2021-12-15 18:47
So I'm not really a web developer, I do Python and C most of the time, I thought I'd make it more interesting and create my own website. The website is pretty minimal, I didn't add any fancy JS stuff, it loads pretty quick. Anyways, what should I add/remove? Is there something I could improve? https://darksky.neocities.org/
Donna Hawthorne · 2021-12-15 18:53
You seem like an okay guy, so please don't take this too personally, but it looks exactly like every other site hosted on neocities.
Pris · 2021-12-15 18:58
>>28988 Any advice on how I can make the website stand out from the others, make it different? I'll have to get pretty creative and original on this one I suppose :D
Unsigned · 2021-12-15 19:11
well there is nothing unique or standoutish about it. but its functional because it's just html, so only the content matters. also there is a thread somewhere else about a lainchan webring, you should check that thread out.
Arisu Mizuki · 2021-12-15 19:24
>>28989 Have to agree with Donna here, it looks very much standard 'techie synthwave fan guy'. Maybe you'd want to create something of your own for the header that represents only you. A logo or a character or maybe both. Otherwise, for a simple About Me type page it's perfectly okay.

Thanks for the advice, I'll think about the future of the webpage, whether it'll be a simple About Me or something else

>>28989 Add another element to the layout: like a navigation section with links to the other pages, or a title bar for each individual page, or a banner that links back to the front page. You get the idea. Don't get me wrong, you have the right idea with simplicity. It's better to be overly simple than overly complex. But when your page is just an image followed by text on a dark-blue background, it gives the site a drab, empty feel.
McCarthy · 2021-12-15 20:29
The text is cut off on mobile. If you're using any mainstream browser, you should emulate a mobile device to see how it will look on modern phones. If you aren't already using it, tools like live-server (https://github.com/tapio/live-server) are a blessing for webdev. Run `live-server` in your project directory and you'll spawn a webserver that automatically refreshes the pages when you update any of the project files.

>>28999 Yeah i know it doesnt work on phones right now, i'm not even sure how to make it compatible for phones yet. I think ill focus on the base of the site for now, and after it's done i'll make it compatible with phones

Of all your programs I was agitated with traffic noise generator. >Website still on development. Cut that out. Every single website I've seen a message like that on hasn't been updated in years. You don't have to notify me it is subject change, that's how the internet works.

>>28987 In your same spot, I think what you can change is the your About Section. Try to go for a simple design with themes that is easy on the eyes.
Joey · 2022-04-09 17:36
Hi, lainons, I'm not OP, and I hope it's OK to use his thread to ask something about my personal website. I want to create an “ask-me-anything” page where the person browsing my personal website enters a question via a form, I get notified via email, and then I write in the page the user's question and my own answer. However, I have no knowledge of cgi and html forms; my knowledge on web development is limited to basic html and css. So I need some guidance on how to do that. I heard that those formmail perl scripts are very insecure. The website is a basic personal static website/blog written in txt and converted to html with some unixy tools (m4, make, awk) and sent to the webserver with rsync+ssh. As you can see, I have no webdev skills. The web and mailserver is an OpenBSD running httpd/opensmtpd. One thing I had in mind is to somehow log in when the user clicks to send the form, and use a script via cron to send me a mail when the logfile changes. But I'm sure there should be better ways to do that.
Cereal Killer · 2022-04-09 18:09
Slightly unrelated, but it's nice to see a normal and civil thread on here. Lately I feel like this website is spammed by incomprehensive schizos way too much. I'm just tired of this whole schizo posting everywhere. >>30699 You are going to need to read the request an user sends, and then pick the variables from the query in that request. You should be able do go further on your own. Here's a pretty good explanation. https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Learn/Forms/Sending_and_retrieving_form_data Note that the variable names are defined by the name of the input name you used in the html form. remember to also use a POST request instead of GET since it's better suited for what you want to do.
The Phantom Phreak · 2022-04-09 18:34
>>30699 >However, I have no knowledge of cgi and html forms; if you are proficient in any scripting language, python, bash, whatever, cgi+html forms is going to be very easy to learn. You can set one up that will directly send you an email containing the content of the form. You could even feed it to an irc bot to contact you that way. I think its the easiest way to go. Alternative to log+cron job could be having a fifo and something that reads the fifo into an email sender type thing. Could even have the reader be a cronjob. Cons: easy to lose stuff if the server goes down before you read it off.

>>28987 I am not webdev either, but the blog-texts are wall of text which actively discourage me from reading it. Modern websites usually put the text in central column and leave the sides empty (...or filled with ads), which reads better on big wide monitors. Also, paragraphs would help a lot.

>>28987 Here's my off-the-cuff critiques, mostly of things that weren't already brought up. -Too many one-way links. Home has a link to About, but if I want to get back to Home, I need to click on one of the two subpages. As a rule of thumb, if page A has a link to page B, then page B should also contain a link to page A. -Why does (nearly) every page start with a giant image? It's very obnoxious. -About Me and About Site can and should be merged into one big page divided by sub-headers. It's better to have a small number of more substansive pages than a bunch of super short ones. -Speaking of the About pages, why do they look so different from the rest of the site? There's no functional reason for them to be this way, and they look like soykaf to boot. -The typography is like kicking dead whales down the beach soykaf.

>>28987 It must be a pain to navigate those pages. You should place every blogstuff under a /blog/ directory and so forth for yourself, it helps to tidy stuff up. You should work on how you format your articles. The giant block of text isn't easy to parse for human beings. Similarly, some pages have a blurry background while others have a big image at the top. Either feel in-the-way; it might be better if you either had a banner with the image spanning the width of the page but no less than 10vh of height, or had a weakly blurred background and put your text in an almost-opaque div with a strong backdrop-filter that spans 95% of the page's width and height. I don't recommend you get rid of the images altogether though, people tend to memorize stuff better with associated graphics and the images could serve with that. Keep JS to a minimum, you're doing great right now, don't change that. Have two-way links, a little like Xanadu was trying to have, or keep an "every page on this site" link directory at the bottom of your pages. Or, if you're trying to go for the mouse-click maze aesthetic for some reason, related/linked pages. You could also pick on a hueshifted sepia palette for the images. Those look good, especially in the pale teals/indigos.
Ender · 2022-04-17 00:31
I found the navigation a bit awkward as others have said, I had to use the back button. I also agree with >>30768 on the about page.

why would you make your own thread for this. the site is fine, but incredibly generic with no interesting content.

>>28987 Font is extremely jarring and the blur makes it even worse. Fix the padding and margins on the paragraphs to be more condensed (as in, not have the text cover the whole screen). Fix the line height as well, and the jarring colors.
