I have been interested in programming/cs and computers in general for a while now. I have learned all I know about that by myself so far, and I plan to work in this field too. I just ask myself if a whole full education (college, etc) is worth it?
what do you all lainons think?

CS can be very a very spreaded subject, so I guess it depends on where you are and what do you want to do specifically. Instead of school, you can try to learn everything through certifications and gain experiences.

The purpose of college/university is to get that piece of paper that will help you get your foot in the door in companies. Otherwise you will get filtered by their recruiting AI, HR or business owner.

Everything interesting and lucrative is in practice, not theory
Save 4 years and 100k. Go to a coding bootcamp and I guarantee you’ll be better off.

needed? yes

in college you will learn outdated technologies, principles, etc.
but the fact that you didn't get filtered by math is kind of a point for employers
the most important thing you can do is write a project on github so they can see that you aren't a sham

if its a topic that interests you, by all means go ahead. People that tell you that a degree is a waste of time or not worth it probably only have the slightest interest in the subject: do it because you want to do it, not because you have to.
Sure you should in theory be able to land a higher earning job with a degree, but what was the point if you didnt have fun; probably wouldve been better off just getting actual experience and be forced to work for corporations with little insight to your actual desires

You should have mentined if you're paying for the degree.
I managed to already get a programming job, but I'm gong to get a degree anyway, not because I have to and not to learn the latest technologies, but because I think I'll enjoy the math and theory itself.
