Decentralized protocols and career advice

Vaillant · 2021-03-10 03:41
Hi Lain, I do not post often so I do not know if this is the correct board to ask for advice. I am graduating this year and I am unsure about the direction I should take. One is as a Technical Engineer at Google, sort of like a customer support for their cloud customers. I do not know why they contacted me for this position since I am not particularily good when dealing with people. The other opportunity is on a medium sized company in Japan, in which I could do more programming, which is what I am most interested in. The catch is that due to travel restrictions this would happen until next year, so I would have some free time after I finish school. So I guess I am split between this, working at a big tech company which pays well (it would help, since in my country the salaries are very low), on a position i am not very passionate about, or working on a smaller company which pays less but I get to program more. Does any lainon has any experience working on big tech companies? Also, if I get some free time after school I am thinking about contributing to some open source projects. IPFS caught my eye, but what does lain think about decentralised applications and protocols? Do you think they have a potential as a future replacement of HTTP and potential career?

>>24801 You are far more expendable in a big company than a small one. Lots of people want to work for big tech, so if they think they're paying too much for you you're gone. Howrver, getting a job at a starting company it's a 75/25 chance it'll sink/swim. If you're going for a big company, you should make sure you're as hard to replace as possible. Golang probably won't work, nor any language designed to be intuitive, rapid, and easy. You should go for a language like C++ that's widely used but no one wants to learn because it's too hard.

I've heard really bad things on the Internet about working as a programmer on Japan, the deadlines are too short, you work inhuman amounts of hours, seniors are dictators, the code is ancient because leaders don't want to change the language, some people relate that is really problematic to program using Japanese character encoding. This are only the work related problems but you probably have others related to culture and food, I would stick with Google 100% of the times, you can argue that I didn't lived in Japan but anyone knows how their culture is so I don't think this relates are a lie

>but what does lain think about decentralised applications and protocols? Anon, I've spent more time than I wish with IPFS. Just don't, please. Protocol Labs is spending its money with FileCoin and isn't paying attention to the community around IPFS.

The Lainchain ethos is "fuarrrk google." fuarrrk google. They are the among the most evil (and lame) entities on the planet. They don't deserve your passion or talents. No amount of money or prestige is worth the stain on your h@ck3r rep. IPFS is cool in my book, but there is a lot of other cool stuff out there too. I am biased as a crypto dev, but I would look into some cool crypto projects, maybe something privacy focused like Wasabi wallet or ZCash. Urbit is also kind of cool as the decntralized social media project with the strongest brand. They have tons to work on and tons of educational programs for devs. >>25694 I also echo this caution. The work culture in Japan is just very tough and very rigidly hierarchical. If the company you're interested in is more western or more cutting edge it might be an exception. You might also get lonely there. But if you're in Tokyo, it is the most beautiful city in the world.
