Programming buddies
Mikoto-chan · 2021-02-18 08:20
Where can I find programming buddies? I saw this trend on Reddit where programmers would look for others that are learning about the same technology in order to share knowledge and stay motivated. Only problem was that most of them were only interested in communication through Discord or similar proprietary platforms.
Texting is fine but I also like to have a VC from time to time. I tried our Mumble server but most of the time there are no more than 1 or2 members and all of them are AFK.
If anybody is interested in learning C, Haskell or Go with me I will leave my contact details below.

Well, I _want_ to write a software to help me generate, place and schedule background characters for my Shadowrun group. You know, to get some believable megaplex feeling with SOME persistence.
I'm thinking creating individual places on the fly with a simple command. Let's say I generate a pub where the group's meeting some dude.
I'd add the pub and some important positions (like the barkeeper) and tell the software to generate those positions and some visitors on the fly complete with descriptions, basic daily schedule and name to get some atmosphere going.
If you're into reverse engineering malware, a Youtuber named stacksmashing documented reversing WannaCry with Ghidra in three amazing videos. If you don't know him yet, definitely check it out.

I'm not that good at programming but this sounds lie something I definitely want to make. Yesterday I was scrolling Reddit for some wallpapers when I was thinking about how easy it would be to just download all the images in a subreddit with a simple tool, eventually adding some filters that allows you to download pictures based on certain criteria.

- LiveOverflow (hacking)
- Real Python (Python)
- Philipp Hagenlocher (Haskell)
- Tsoding (Haskell)

... I sure did swallow the ninja part in my post. As I said, my brain's busted.
Thanks for the list, I gotta admit I don't really have muc else. I've only recently started looking to YT for coding stuff.
I'm gonna recommend Sebastian Lague though. His "coding adventures" series handles different topics from boids, ecosystem simulation to procedural generation and rendering. They're pure gold, manage to capture and keep attention and offer various bits of knowledge about how to solve problems. Reminds me of Ian Hubert's Lazy Blender Tutorials but with coding.
I'd also like to correct you on the "competitive" part. While the name "Codewars" sounds competitive, it's inspired by martial arts training, so the peudo-competitive elements are very much tailored to learning from each other rather than trying to find out who's the best. I recommend giving it a try despite the JS requirement.

This may be the opportunity. Lainons here that are looking to collaborate on a programming project either to test, refine or learn their skills I have been thinking. Would anyone be interested in writing an operating system + kernel in lisp? I've been reading much material on operating systems, and things like the TUNES project failed because there wasn't enough interest. I see much benefit in writing a new operating system that does not have the shortcomings of existing ones. I can't do it alone due to the sheer amount of code to get it to the stage of modern operating systems in time. It could be a saving grace for programmers and users alike. If any lains are interested reply in the thread and if enough are interested I'll make stuff happen.

No. OpenBSD is a meme, and it's Unix that's the problem. Reccomeneded reading is tunes.org and ugh.pdf (unix-haters handbook). My premise is that the operating system core is an extended lisp environment like that of old lisp-machines but for modern architecture (possibly RISC-V if things go that way.)
>>25015
The idea is that anyone can use it as a learning experience whilst still contributing to something meaningful, if there's something wrong with their code it can be peer-reviewed and they can improved. There's also the matter of not repeating the TUNES project's shortcomings, an active and growing community of interest would be necessary.

Sounds like an idea I had: Lisp Machine Linux.
Processes, Busses, and Everything else is abstracted into a set of embedded and recursive cons that can be accessed and manipulated directly through the terminal much like addresses would on a commodore. The idea being that the entire OS is a single Lisp environment with manipulable symbols - everything is a cons kind of like UNIX.
One of the problems with lisps is that even when compiled they rely on an intermediate format that doesn't communicate directly with the machine but instead through an interpreter. A compiled lisp is the first and most necessary step in this (Carp and Microlisp are good candidates). The other step is interfacing wtih the linux kernel, since only someone really dedicated or stupid would write an entire kernel in lisp.

Really? I figured it would at this point, cause there's a library for everything, like how zig has a library to read protocol buffers. I know lxml/selenium are just bindings, so they can be ported over easy. Rest I'm not so sure on. Also
> lxml
Call me retarded, but when do you actually need to parse the XML of a site when scrapping? Is it when you're taking in XML requests? Otherwise, wouldn't it be easier to just use beautifulsoup?
> why would you do that?
I might do it, for market research. I wanna start a startup, and I seen some people's response on finding a worthwhile product is go through social media, see people's pain points (oh, I wish you can do X easier) and make a product based on that. So I could make a scrapper that goes through subreddits, maybe use some gay ass ML to find posts complaining about something, make a product that solves that and boom: easy money. That's just an idea, and I have no business sense as well, so it's probably bad. Would be fun though, to learn some machine learning.

I'm hoping for a stable version of dendrite to come out as soon as possible so that I can self-host again. Synapse is really intensive on resources and it's not worth the VPS costs imo.
Marly Krushkhova · 2021-06-12 10:05
We haven't done anything yet besides making a matrix library (not the communication protocol but the math concept) but it's not really practical as there's no UI to type in the numbers. I currently have finals for 2 more weeks but after that I have all the time in the world to program. I've already taken an interest in Go's interfaces, they allow you to use functions on different types without weak typing or other error-prone solutions i.e. I can write a function that will delete a post but it works on main threads as well on replies without boilerplate code.
Just another Random Lainon · 2021-06-12 15:15
I add some of you guys on matrix. I'm not used to check the network because I have nobody there to talk with, so I might take some time to respond.
I'm mostly a web developer, have some experience with JS and Laravel and recently started a job on csharp stack, but I'm up to anything (that isn't illegal or too edgy). I tried sometimes writing a interpreter but I always end up getting tired on the middle of it and abandoning the project. Nowadays it feels like such a slog to build anything I hope you guys help me found joy on building again.

Just as I got home from my last schoolday of the year I noticed that midov,pl was down, the server on which the programming room was hosted. Apparently the dude that was hosting it got hit with extreme weather conditions causing him to shutdown everything temporarily.
I'm hoping everything will be soon up again but in the meanwhile I'm creating a new room at #programming:transhumanist.club.
I'm also available at IRC and will be working om a CAPTCHA implementation in Go this week if anybody is interested in joining me.

Does matrix still have that "X read your message"? I hated that soykaf. Even if you hide that option, it doesn't remove anything since people would still know you "read their message".

In my desktop client I see a little circle with user's avatar in it next to a message, I think it indicates that a user read messages up to that message.

While Matrix supports read receipts you can just use a client that doesn't.

Does it stop people from knowing that I have read their message or only stop showing it to myself?
setq · 2021-06-25 16:03
>>26382
In order for read receipts to work, you need the client to actively notify the sender that their message has been read. I don't know which matrix clients allow you to disable this behavior, but it is in principle possible. For reference, it's common for XMPP clients to give you the option to enable/disable stuff like read receipts, typing notifications, presence updates, etc.
Switch · 2021-06-29 16:08

I use riot on android, available over f-droid, which is kind of ok.
On the computer is use nheko, which is available by default from the fedora repo, so other distros prolly have it too.
Quarterion i think was another called, cant be sure about the spelling, but i never got around trying it.
Btw id be down to have a group of sorts, there is already and unoficial lainchan channel there, might well use that.
Also there were a few lains who said they do gamedev, it be interested to see if we cant find something cool to discuss or whatever.
Btw for those who already use tox there is also a group chat: 2167ED20D40E1A5557A7AEFE16D0E110920382A9F3AA6C6597EA71DF4E499C5942CD0768F260
I lurk there, anything goes, they know me, so if you didnt already know might well give it a peak.

My problem with groups like these is that slowly, but surely, the off-topic convo starts to increase to the point people hardly remember what was the point of the group. I have been part of programming, math and book reading groups(this one being off-line) and of the 3, only the book reading one was not killed by off-topic(mostly because it was a monthly meeting).
As soon as people started to treat each other as friends, talking about their daily lives, what they are doing and so on(nothing related to the reason the group was created), the whole point of the group was dead and it was just another normal group(which at that point I'd just leave it).
It made me realized that a group like these only works when:
1) It hardly talk about off-topic things(no, I don't care if you are playing X or watching Y).
2) It have daily/weekly/monthly/whatever meeting(that is, not the whole day), since it avoids people to talk about anything when they are bored.
Sadly, because it is usually an online group, the 2nd point is never going to be implemented because no one would want to be part of a group that doesn't talk whenever they want to talk. Off-topic is impossible to avoid no matter the group(even the book reading group I was had it), but since you can say anything whenever you want(because online group), it motivates the off-topic convo to increase, making 1st point also impossible.

I can imagine the opposite extreme being bad too.
Like, if you want something strictly on-topic and super-useful, just read a book or watch a lecture or something, why do you need to talk to anyone at all, right?
I think it's not about a on-topic/off-topic dichotomy, but about something else, like, having and cultivating good habits, being proactive, something like that.
At the end of the day, nobody is going to do the work for you, it's you who does all the work, you only need other people to bounce ideas off of, and to be exposed to new and fresh ideas, among other things.
J.C. Denton · 2021-06-30 18:39
>>26458
Extremely on-topic is impossible, no matter what kind of group so I don't expect that. I do expect that off-topic discussion happens way less than on-topic discussion.
>I think it's not about a on-topic/off-topic dichotomy, but about something else, like, having and cultivating good habits, being proactive, something like that.
The problem with this is that a non-proactive member that talks mostly about off-topic stuff tend to make people keep having convo about off-topic stuff. Unless you go ban everyone that do that(which would turn your group just make a new group without you and leave), you can make some rules that avoid the increase of off-topic discussion.
Church · 2021-06-30 19:34
>>26445
I have seen this happen in other rooms but it won't happen on this one since nobody is really interested in talking unless they want to demonstrate some new piece of code or discuss what they've been working on lately. We don't really program together yet (too much diversity too little people) but today I did a peer review with another guy and it's always nice when people can give you feedback on your project idea before you start wasting months of time on it before realizing it wasn't worth the effort to begin with.

Since 1984hosting derezzed me for "violating" their guidelines I'll use this thread temporarily to share our common goals:
- have a website with a schedule and self-hosted git instance to upload all the work we did
- have a weekly gathering (still deciding on this one but I guess the weekend is preferable) to discuss progress, difficulties, etc.
- propose new subjects at the beginning of every month and vote which one we will dedicate the entire month to
- have 3 types of schedules (easy/normal/hard) which take respectively 30/60/90 minutes per day to finish
- spend the last week doing a project to build a program to solve a real problem (maybe we should do this in groups of 4 so that we have multiple solutions)
- do peer reviews the last day of the month
If you want to elaborate on this further please leave a comment here since it's hard to filter all messages on Matrix.

Can ending the pollution of medium, Reddit, hacker news, and everything in pop-dev be a goal?
Ein · 2021-07-17 20:10
>>26792
Sure, but that is a pipe-dream and the best method is to avoid all of that.
Funny, though, because I have learned that one can enjoy a hobby yet never have to face the cancer in that very hobby. I have been programming for years, as a hobby, and since I don't care at all about things like that(reddit, hacker news, whatever), to the point I can avoid all of it, I can enjoy this very hobby. I pray for people that work as a programmer, they can't avoid cancer.
